Abstract:This paper details on the design of DVB-S2 demodulator. The architecture of the demodulator compliant with the CCM (Constant Coding and Modulation) mode comprises timing recovery unit, frame synchronization unit, frequency recovery unit and frequency phase recovery unit. The system is easier to hardware implementation comparing with the system provided in [41 and [8]. After the key demodulation algorithms were discussed, a quantitative result is given, this allows us to draw conclusions concerning the achievable system performance under realistic complexity assumptions.

Abstract:Trellis Code Modulation (TCM) has been widely used because it can obtain 2.55∼7.37 dB coding gain without bandwidth expansion or reduction of the effective information rates. Since Viterbi decoder plays an important role in the realization of HDTV system, we conduct the research and development on integration of Viterbi decoder. This paper proposes a new VLSI design of Viterbi decoder using ASIPs based on hardware/software co-design idea. It reduces the total design time and enhances the reliability of VLSI. We have successfully used this method for the design of Viterbi decoder in the ASTC-HDTV receiver chip.

Abstract:The paper describes a DVB based HDTV audio decoder used in multi-channel extension and presents an improved algorithm for the synthesis filter bank. It is found that when the symmetry of coefficient and the similarity of the allocation tables, computational amount and memory size are reduced by more than 50%. DSP/BIOS operating system simplifies developing various DSP systems. This decoder can also be used in Digital Audio Broadcasting systems.

Abstract:This paper proposes an implementation scheme of symbol-processing in DVB-S receiver. By using Secondary Encode and special sync-searching byte-recovering circuits, not only the processing time reduces remarkably, but also needs less hardware resource. This scheme has already been applied in the chip design of satellite digital television.

Abstract:Digital multimedia broadcasting is available in more and more countries with various forms. One of the most successful forms is Digital Video Broadcasting for Terrestrial (DVB-T), which has been deployed in most countries of the world for years. In order to bring the digital multimedia broadcasting services to battery-powered handheld receivers in a mobile environment, Digital Video Broadcasting for Handheld (DVB-H) has been formally adopted by ETSI. More advanced and complex digital multimedia broadcasting systems are under development, for example, the next generation of DVB-T, a.k.a. DVB-T2. Current commercial DVB-T/H receivers are usually built upon dedicated application-specific integrated circuits (ASICs). However, ASICs are not flexible for incoming evolved standards and less overall-area efficient since they cannot be efficiently reused and shared among different radio standards, when we integrate a DVB-T/H receiver into a mobile phone. This paper presents an example implementation of a DVB-T/H receiver on the prototype of Infineon Technologies' Software-Defined Radio (SDR) platform called MuSIC (Multiple SIMD Cores), which is a DSP-centered and accelerator-assisted architecture and aims at battery-powered mass-market handheld terminals.

Abstract:This paper presents a novel architecture of MPEG audio decoder, the input audio stream will not be serialized before decoding. Barrel shift register is used to fetch data from input buffer, which improves the efficiency of decoding process substantially. Dedicated hardware is designed to deal with input and degroup. In this scheme, the computation amount of bottleneck module can be reduced to one-fourths of the original one, and the memory storage requires half of the standard synthesis filter bank. This decoder can be used in DVB and DAB source decoding and etc.

Abstract:This paper presents a hardware efficient high definition television (HDTV) encoder for H.264/AVC. We use a two-level mode decision (MD) mechanism to reduce the complexity and maintain the performance, and design a sharable architecture for normal mode fractional motion estimation (NFME), special mode fractional motion estimation (SFME), and luma motion compensation (LMC), to decrease the hardware cost. Based on these technologies, we adopt a four-stage macro-block pipeline scheme using an efficient memory management strategy for the system, which greatly reduces on-chip memory and bandwidth requirements. The proposed encoder uses about 1126k gates with an average Bjontegaard-Delta peak signal-to-noise ratio (BD-PSNR) decrease of 0.5 dB, compared with JM15.0. It can fully satisfy the real-time video encoding for 1080p@30 frames/s of H.264/AVC high profile.

Abstract:The MSD technology is applied to the ASIC design of channel decoder of DRM receiver. As an IC design practice which reaches millionaired gates level, it has good reconfigurable and reusable characteristics. With 0.18um CMOS technology, the design can run at frequency up to 50 MHz, the area is 2 282 707.5 μm2, which is about 377 303 Nand (ND2LL) gate-count size.

Abstract:Two optimization strategies are presented for the Chinese digital television terrestrial broadcasting(DTMB) standard based on application specific intergrated circuits(ASIC) characteristics to improve storage resource utilization in the low-density parity-check(LDPC) encoder and to simplify implementation of the square root raised cosine(SRRC) filter in DTMB systems.Simulations and hardware implementations show that the optimized LDPC encoder and SRRC filter provide the required DTMB system performance while the storage utilization of LDPC encoder is significantly improved and the implementation of the SRRC filter is simplified by nearly 50%.The strategies also effectively reduce the die size in DTMB ASIC design.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a system-on-chip software hardware co-design for a statistical decoder. We use the context-based adaptive binary arithmetic decoder (CABAC decoder) used in the High profile of the H.264/AVC video coding standard as a design example. The design is aimed to strike a balance between software modules and hardware modules based on design constraints. It is capable of decoding one bin per clock cycle at high clock frequencies while maintaining a slim hardware footprint. Compared to existing statistical decoders, this design is aimed for a fast and compact IP core, well verified with standard video test sequence, and ideal for a SoC implementation.

Abstract:A new architecture for transport stream demultiplexer (TS Demux) in high definition television (HDTV) decoder is presented in this paper, which is able to demultiplex two TS inputs synchronously. We have pursued a hardware-based design that controlled by the software to yield high performance in the least silicon area. The key parts of the architecture, including PID filter, section filter and Memory Control Unit (MCU), are shared by the two TS inputs in terms of a time slice. Owing to the elaborate shared mechanism, our design is efficient to support more tremendous functions with less resource compared to the current scheme.

Abstract:In order to receive digital video broadcasting(DVB) program with computer,this paper presents an application specific integrated circuits(ASIC) design of DVB transport stream receiving chip based on PCI interface.Hardware-software partitioning strategy is based on real-time requirement and complexity profiles of DVB system.Data path architecture is focused on the design of high-speed channel to improve the bandwidth.Furthermore,the parameters of chaining mode direct memory access(DMA) and the depth of buffer are optimized by theory analysis.The result indicates the bandwidth of chaining mode DMA is up to 476.6 Mb/s,which is 25 times as much as original DMA strategy.The chip can enhance the ability of receiving data and has been fabricated in 0.35 μm CMOS process of Fujitsu.

Abstract:Based on the min-sum algorithm, this paper proposes an LDPC decoder integrating the TDMP schedule, which could achieve low complexity as well as good performance. The LDPC decoder is for DVB-S2, which includes 11 kinds of code rates with a block size of 64800. Based on SMIC 0.13 Â¿m standard CMOS process, the LDPC decoder has an estimation area of 14 mm2, a throughput of 135 Mbps with a frequency of 105 MHz and maximum iteration number of 30,which shows advantage over previous DVB-S2 LDPC decoders.

But now it is not popular that the network data stream and compressed MPEG2 data stream are transported in the same cable for some reasons of the standard. To solve this problem, this paper introduces an interactive two-module STB with network access, including the design of the hardware and software, which makes it available that the two data streams are received from the different module.

Abstract:A System-on-Chip Design of VLD (Variable Length Decoder) in multi-standard video decoder is proposed in this paper. Our design supports all the popular video compression standards, e.g. MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, H.264, AVS, RealVideo. Benefit from its low power, the design is especially suitable for wearable multimedia applications. Simulation results show that the whole design takes an area of 1.04mm2, under a 0.13um CMOS technology. In the frequency as low as only 133MHz, it can meet the demands of HD (High Definition) requirements.
VLSI Implementation of High-Performance QC-LDPC Decoder

Abstract:Based on the rearranged Min-Sum decoding algorithm, a high speed partially parallel decoder architecture suited for quasi-cyclic low density parity-check (QC-LDPC) codes is proposed. A log-barrel-shifter is designed to reduce complexity of interconnection. By introducing micro-code-instruction, the decoder becomes independent with certain code rate and its regularity. It can also support any code rate without any changes in hardware. To adaptively control the power consumption under different channel conditions, a dynamic power control unit is adopted. Based on proposed decoder architecture, a QC-LDPC decoder for Chinese digital television?multi-media broadcasting (DTMB) standard (GB20600—2006) system is implemented based on SMIC 0.18 μm process, its frequency can be reached up to 100 MHz at the cost of 620 k gates.

Abstract:A mixed hardware/software architecture for CABAC decoding in H.264/AVC is proposed in this paper. For the purpose of flexibility, ctxldx calculation process is implemented by software, while others are implemented by hardware. An optimized parallel decoding architecture that allows decoding two binary symbols at one clock cycle is designed to enhance overall decoding performance. An efficient scheme of accessing context models is presented. Experimental results show that the proposed architecture improves the decoding performance by 20% compared to conventional scheme. The proposed design can achieve HDTV 1080i video processing requirement when operated at 140 MHz.
