Abstract:Lipopeptide surfactants are composed of amino acids and fatty acids and carry the inherent benefits of biocompatibility, degradability, functionality and easiness for structural design. In this work, the interfacial adsorption of a novel lipopeptide surfactant C14K1 has been examined by combining the measurements of spectroscopic ellipsometry (SE) and neutron reflection (NR). As for other model surfactants, the silicon oxide/water interface has been adopted to undertake the interfacial screening due to its readiness to facilitate the parallel measurements. SE revealed that the dynamic interfacial adsorption was characterized by an initial fast step within the first 2-3 min, followed by a slow relaxation step over the subsequent 30 min or so. Majority of the lipopeptide was found to adsorb with the fast initial step but the subsequent structural relaxation and adjustment led to the adsorption plateau. Interestingly, this pattern of dynamic adsorption is very different from amphiphilic peptides such as V6K1 and V6K2, but is similar to diblock copolymers bearing a hydrophilic MPC block and a pH responsive DEA block comprised of tertiary amine groups. Subsequent NR, in conjunction with deuterium labeling, revealed the formation of bilayer structure over a wide concentration and pH range, with the hydrophobic tails sandwiched in the middle and hydrophilic charged head groups projected outwards. The fully packed bilayer is some 40 angstrom thick and changes in pH did not affect layer thickness much but did alter the packing density due to the different electrostatic repulsion associated with the charge dissociation of the head groups. Whilst surface adsorption of C14K1 behaved in many aspects like nonionic C12E6 (surface tension, salt effect and bilayer packing), detailed structural determination revealed little intermixing between the heads and tails, an observation different from C12E6.

Abstract:Carboxylic acids, particularly fatty acids, are by far the most important surface modification systems for inorganic fillers used in the plastics and rubber industries. However, relatively little is understood regarding factors that affect their adsorption behaviour, including the interplay between acid molecular structure, adsorption conditions, and substrate chemistry. In this study, the adsorption (from n-heptane and toluene) of a range of saturated and unsaturated fatty acids, together with acrylic acid, onto aluminium and magnesium hydroxides has been investigated using flow micro-calorimetry and diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS). With C18 saturated fatty acids, the overall heat of adsorption per unit surface area of substrate was found to be affected by the structure of the alkyl tail. The orientation of the adsorbed unsaturated fatty acids was found to be affected by the number of double bonds in the molecule. Acrylic acid was found to be very strongly adsorbing and could displace isostearic acid from the filler surface. However, isostearic acid was found to adsorb on top of the layer of aluminium or magnesium acrylate. These findings have important implications particularly for mixed fatty acid treatment methods and the choice of fatty acid treatment for metal hydroxide flame-retardant fillers.

Abstract:We demonstrate the facile synthesis of a new type of precision polymers containing periodically placed perfluoroalkyl segments and sulfonic acid groups via acyclic diene metathesis (ADMET) polymerization of designed diene monomers and the subsequent postmodification of the internal C=C bonds. Two diene monomers containing perfluoroalkyl segments [-(CF2)(n)-, n=4 and 6] were synthesized through the atom transfer radical addition (ATRA) of dodecafluoro-1, 6-diiodohexane and octafluoro-1, 4-diiodobutane with 1,5-hexadiene and the subsequent deiodination. ADMET polymerization of these two monomers with Grubbs-I catalyst led to periodic polymers containing perfluoroalkyl segments and internal C=C bonds. Subsequent postpolymerization modification with thiolacetic acid and the following oxidation with hydrogen peroxide afforded the final polymers. The polymers were characterized by NMR, GPC, and FTIR, and the thermal properties of the final copolymers were investigated by DSC and TGA. These polymers exhibited high thermal stability as compared to other precisely sulfonated polyethylene analogues; therefore, they may be potentially investigated as efficient proton transport membranes.
Adsorber Charge Dominates over Hydrophobic or Fluorophilic Functionalization in Influencing Adsorption of PFCA onto Polystyrene Resins

Abstract:By comparing a series of functionalized anion exchange resins it is shown that the length and fluorination of the functional side chain of the resin exhibited only a minor impact on its perfluorocarboxylic acid (PFCA) removal efficiency. This is further corroborated by no significant removal of PFCA by the respective uncharged polystyrene resins. A systematic series of industrial‐relevant polystyrene‐based anion exchange resins that are functionalized with hydro‐ or fluorocarbon chains are compared regarding their adsorption behavior toward perfluorocarboxylic acids (PFCA) in respect to their charge, chain length, and type of chain. The results clearly show the dominance of electrostatic interactions in the adsorption process as uncharged adsorber materials showed no adsorption at all. In contrast, the charged adsorber materials showed in general a PFCA removal of 80% to 30% over the experiment depending on effluent fraction. Unexpectedly, for perfluorobutanoic acid (PFBA) the highest removal rate is found with consistently >90%. Despite observing significant benefits in the adsorption of PFCA for fluoroalkylated adsorbers in comparison to their non‐fluorinated counterparts, this effect of fluoroalkylation is comparatively small and can not be clearly attributed to fluorophilic interactions between the fluoroalkyl chains. These findings help clarifying that the introduction of fluorocarbon moieties in adsorber materials is not necessary in order to remove fluorocarbon molecules from the environment.

Abstract:Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs), also called forever chemicals, are known for their high physicochemical stability. In the last decades, these chemicals have been widely employed for numerous industrial applications. However, their persistence in the environment has increasingly raised concern regarding their potential toxicity to living organisms including humans. Hence, the need for their removal demands the development of efficient methods to reduce their environmental impact. Here, a quaternary ammonium swellable organically modified silica (QASOMS) is used for the removal of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS), and perfluorobutanesulfonic acid (PFBS) via liquid phase adsorption. Adsorption of the pollutants was quantified using an optimized quantitative liquid phase 19F NMR method. QASOMS exhibited good adsorption capacities for all three PFASs; the highest uptake was measured for PFOA and was equal to 0.635 mmol/g at a concentration of 1.89 mM. Fast adsorption kinetics were also found for all three PFASs, showing approximately 93% of PFAS removal from the aqueous solutions after 6 h of contact. Finally, host–guest interactions between the adsorbed PFAS and the surface of QASOMS were investigated via SS-NMR spectroscopy.

Abstract:The increased detection of understudied per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in environmental matrices has highlighted the need to evaluate the treatability of a wide-range of PFAS by sorption-based processes. This study investigated the efficacy of three commercial adsorbents (i.e., granular activated carbon (GAC), surface modified clay (SMC), and anionic exchange resin (AER)) for the removal of a wide range of cationic, zwitterionic, and anionic PFAS from an aqueous film forming foam (AFFF)-impacted groundwater employing rapid small-scale column tests (RSSCTs) coupled with high resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS) and suspect screening analysis (SQ). AER exhibited later breakthrough times for the majority of anionic and zwitterionic PFAS compared to SMC and GAC. However, both AER and SMC exhibited negligible removal of cationic PFAS presumably due to the reliance of these adsorbents on electrostatic interactions and the counteraction of hydrophobic forces caused by the repulsion between cationic PFAS and positively charged surfaces of AER and SMC. GAC, being a non-selective adsorbent, was largely unaffected by the ionic charge of the evaluated PFAS with molecular structure having a bigger impact on adsorbability. The detection of a variety of PFAS classes in the investigated AFFF-impacted groundwater enabled assessment of the relative impact of chemical structure on adsorptive removal of PFAS. Chain-length dependent adsorption was observed across all investigated anionic and zwitterionic PFAS classes. The PFAS structures possessing hydroxyl and/or methyl functional groups exhibited later breakthrough times compared to their homologues lacking these functional groups and cyclic/unsaturated structures were removed less efficiently compared to their linear/saturated homologues. In the case of perfluoroalkyl acid (PFAA)-derivative structures, hydrogen-substituted classes (i.e., H-PFAAs) were removed more efficiency than PFAAs while keto-substituted structures (i.e., K-PFSA) and pentahydrido-fluoroalkane sulfates (PeH-FAOS) exhibited lower adsorbability compared to PFAAs for all adsorbents. Oxa-PFAAs (O-PFSA; isomer class of PFA-OS) on the other hand demonstrated higher adsorbability compared to PFAAs in the case of AER-like adsorbents, while this trend was reversed for GAC.

Abstract:A low-cost and easily constructed porous aromatic framework (PAF-45) was successfully prepared using the Scholl reaction. PAF-45 was, for the first time, used to remove perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) from aqueous solution. Systematic experiments were performed to determine the adsorption capacity of PAF-45 for PFOS and to characterize the kinetics of the adsorption process. The adsorption of PFOS onto PAF-45 reached equilibrium in 30 min and the adsorption capacity of PAF-45 for PFOS was excellent (5847 mg g−1 at pH 3). The amount of PFOS adsorbed by PAF-45 increased significantly as the cation (Na+, Mg2+, or Fe3+) concentration increased, which probably occurred because the cations enhanced the interactions between the negatively charged PFOS molecules and the positively charged PAF-45 surface. The cations Na+, Mg2+ and Fe3+ were found to form complexes with PFOS anions in solution. Density functional theory was used to identify the interactions between PFOS and Na+, Mg2+ and Fe3+. We expect that materials of the same type as PAF-45 could be useful adsorbents for removing organic pollutants from industrial wastewater and contaminated surface water.

Abstract:To obtain amphiphilic polymers, fluorinated groups were successfully embedded in polyacrylates. The amphiphilic polymers were synthesized by free radical-initiated copolymerization using hydrophilic acrylate monomers and hydrophobic 2-perfluorooctylethyl methacrylate (FMA). 1H NMR spectroscopy and Fourier transform infrared results indicated that the fluorinated monomer FMA was successfully embedded in the polymers. Abstract:Perfluorinated chemicals (PFCs) are distributed throughout the environment. In the case of perfluorinated alkyl carboxylates and sulfonates, they can be classified as persistent organic pollutants since they are resistant to environmentally relevant reduction, oxidation, and hydrolytic processes. With this in mind, we report on the reductive defluorination of perfluorobutanoate, PFBA (C(3)F(7)CO(2)(-)), perfluorohexanoate, PFHA (C(5)F(11)CO(2)(-)), perfluorooctanoate, PFOA (C(7)F(15)CO(2)(-)), perfluorobutane sulfonate, PFBS (C(4)F(9)SO(3)(-)), perfluorohexane sulfonate, PFHS (C(6)F(13)SO(3)(-)), and perfluorooctane sulfonate, PFOS (C(8)F(17)SO(3)(-)) by aquated electrons, e(aq)(-), that are generated from the UV photolysis (lambda = 254 nm) of iodide. The ionic headgroup (-SO(3)(-) vs -CO(2)(-)) has a significant effect on the reduction kinetics and extent of defluorination (F index = -[F(-)](produced)/[PFC](degraded)). Perfluoroalkylsulfonate reduction kinetics and the F index increase linearly with increasing chain length. In contrast, perfluoroalkylcarboxylate chain length appears to have a negligible effect on the observed kinetics and the F index. H/F ratios in the gaseous fluoro-organic products are consistent with measured F indexes. Incomplete defluorination of the gaseous products suggests a reductive cleavage of the ionic headgroup occurs before complete defluorination. Detailed mechanisms involving initiation by aquated electrons are proposed.

Abstract:This work reports the first demonstration of the chemical reactions on the C-F groups of perfluorosulfonic acid polymers. The Nafion chains show chemical reactivity for atom transfer radical addition onto multiwalled carbon nanotubes and ability to serve as a macroinitiator for atom transfer radical polymerization. The C-F groups and mainchain -CF2 groups have been demonstrated, under a study with 19F NMR, as the active sites responsible for the reactions. The results could certainly extend both the scopes of chemistry and application of perfluorosulfonic acid polymers as well as the windows of atom transfer radical addition/polymerization to fluorinated compounds.

Abstract:Adsorption is considered as an effective method to remove perfluorinated compounds (PFCs) from aqueous solution. In this study, an aminated rice husk (RH) adsorbent was successfully prepared through surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) and subsequent amination reaction, and it was used to remove perfluorooctanoate (PFOA), perfluorobutanoic acid (PFBA) and perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) from aqueous solution. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis verified the presence of grafted polymer brushes and amine groups on the RH surface. The zero point of zeta potential of aminated RH was 8.5, which facilitated the sorption of anionic PFCs on the positively charged adsorbent at pH below 8.5. The sorption equilibria of PFOA, PFBA and PFOS were achieved within 5h, 3h and 9h, respectively, faster than the reported porous adsorbents. Sorption isotherms showed that the adsorption capacities of PFOA, PFBA and PFOS on the aminated RH at pH 5.0 were 2.49, 1.70 and 2.65mmolg−1, respectively. Sorption behavior and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis confirmed that the electrostatic and hydrophobic interactions were involved in the sorption process, and the micelles and hemi-micelles of PFOA and PFOS may form on the adsorbent surface.

Abstract:Perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) are environmentally persistent, bioaccumulating, and toxic compounds that have attracted global attention. It is challenging to reduce the residual concentrations of these compounds to safe discharge limits. In this study, batch experiments were performed to evaluate natural clinoptilolite and clinoptilolites modified (MC) with cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC-MC), didodecyldimethylammonium bromide (DDAB-MC), hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (HDTMA-MC), and tetramethylammonium chloride (TMA-MC) as cost-effective aqueous PFAS adsorbents. The removal capacities of the adsorbents for the majority of the PFASs decreased in the following order: DDAB-MC > CPC-MC ≫ modified natural clinoptilolite with hexadecyltrimethyl ammonium bromide (HDTMA-MC) ≫ modified natural clinoptilolite with tetramethylammonium chloride (TMA-MC) ≈ natural clinoptilolite modified with NaCl (NC). In particular, CPC-MC and DDAB-MC reduced PFASs concentration in 50 μg/L by up to 98% for perfluorooctane sulphonate. Within 30 min, CPC-MC (30.5 μg/L) and DDAB-MC (32.1 μg/L) met the PFOS water quality criterion of 36 μg/L in inland surface waters. Both adsorbents met this criterion at the highest solution volume (40 mL) and 0.125 g/L (solid-to-liquid ratio of 1:8). PFASs with short hydrocarbon chains competed more for adsorption. PFASs with sulphonate functional groups were also adsorbed more than carboxyl groups in single- and multi-PFAS solutions. The modified surfaces of clinoptilolites controlled PFAS adsorption through hydrophobic and electrostatic interactions. PFAS removal with surfactant-modified clinoptilolites is cost-effective and protects aquatic environments by using surplus natural materials.

Abstract:Perfluorosulfonic acids (PFSA) are a class of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), which have been extensively used in numerous applications. The toxicity and bioaccumulation of PFAS have become a serious worldwide problem. Foam fractionation has been suggested as a promising remediation method for PFAS removal owing to the amphiphilic nature of most of the currently existing PFAS in the environment, allowing them to migrate to the air-water interface during the foaming process. Nevertheless, the current challenge for widespread utilization of foam fractionation is its low removal efficiency, especially for short-chain PFAS. Foam fractionation performance depends on the air-water interfacial properties as well as the ability for PFAS to adsorb at the air-water interface. In the present study, therefore, we investigate surface tensions of PFSA with long and short chain lengths. Different adsorption models are studied to estimate maximum surface excess concentrations for various PFSA. Our results indicate that long-chain PFSA have lower surface tensions, higher surface activities, and form more rigid air-water interfaces. This study marks the first investigation of dilatational interfacial rheology of PFAS, as well as addressing the gap in understanding PFAS interfacial rheology by focusing on the quantification the storage and loss interfacial moduli, which are known to play a significant role in the foaming process.

Abstract:Omega-hydroperfluorocarboxylates (ω-HPFCAs, HCF2-(CF2)n-1-COO-) are commercially available in bulk quantities and have been applied in agrochemicals, fluoropolymer production, and semiconductor coating. In this study, we used kinetic measurements, theoretical calculations, model compound experiments, and transformation product analyses to reveal novel mechanistic insights into the reductive and oxidative transformation of ω-HPFCAs. Like perfluorocarboxylates (PFCAs, CF3-(CF2)n-1-COO-), the direct linkage between HCnF2n- and -COO- enables facile degradation under UV/sulfite treatment. To our surprise, the presence of the H atom on the remote carbon makes ω-HPFCAs more susceptible than PFCAs to decarboxylation (i.e., yielding shorter-chain ω-HPFCAs) and less susceptible to hydrodefluorination (i.e., H/F exchange). Like fluorotelomer carboxylates (FTCAs, CnF2n+1-CH2CH2-COO-), the C-H bond in HCF2-(CF2)n-1-COO- allows hydroxyl radical oxidation and limited defluorination. While FTCAs yielded PFCAs in all chain lengths, ω-HPFCAs only yielded -OOC-(CF2)n-1-COO- (major) and -OOC-(CF2)n-2-COO- (minor) due to the unfavorable β-fragmentation pathway that shortens the fluoroalkyl chain. We also compared two treatment sequences-UV/sulfite followed by heat/persulfate and the reverse-toward complete defluorination of ω-HPFCAs. The findings will benefit the treatment and monitoring of H-containing per- and polyfluoroalkyl substance (PFAS) pollutants as well as the design of future fluorochemicals.
Dehydrofluorination as a Residue-Free Selective Route to C–C Bond Formation at Metal Surfaces

Abstract:Directing covalent on-surface polymerization of molecular precursors through rational synthetic design has been impaired by the lack of control over reaction sites and by limited chemical routes to covalent bond formation between precursors, resulting in limited control of the outcomes and parasitic surface reaction byproducts. Here we investigate the mechanism of a recently reported chemical route to C–C bond formation: dehydrofluorination on metal surfaces. We demonstrate that this chemical route, involving specifically C–H/F–C pairs, favors the elimination of HF in the gas phase as a single step, therefore eliminating reaction byproducts at the surface of metals. Unlike dehalogenation, we find that the remarkable selectivity of the dehydrofluorination reaction renders this C–C bond formation strategy chemoselective as well as potentially regioselective, if employed with a properly designed molecular precursor. Additionally, we demonstrate that the catalytic role of the metal substrate can be used to steer reaction pathways and select between dehydrofluorination and dehydrogenation reaction. Abstract:The presence of Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS) in water causes health effects on humans and animals over time. Among all techniques, the adsorption methodology has shown effective performance for removing PFAS from water. Different adsorbents, including classical powder activated carbon (AC) and metal organic frameworks (MOFs) as new generation of adsorbents have been used for the removal of short-chain (C<6) and long-chain (C>7) PFAS. However, due to the complexity of the adsorption process, the diversity of adsorbents and PFAS compounds, and the lack of standard experimental protocol, the effectiveness and undergoing sorption mechanisms for each of these adsorbents have not been investigated and compared systematically yet. In this work, we synthesized and characterized the adsorbents and then performed a systematic isotherm adsorption protocol to study the adsorption mechanisms and performance of adsorbents, including nanosized activated carbon AC, MIL-101 (Cr), MIL-101 (Cr)-NH2 and novel hybrid adsorbents of MIL-101 (Cr)@AC for the removal of perfluorooctane sulphonic acid (PFOS) from water. Based on the comparative analysis to investigate the effective parameters governing the PFOS adsorption with respect to each adsorbent, AC with around 93% PFOS removal showed supreme performance over other MOFs; however, MOF-based adsorbents showed faster adsorption compared to AC. The MIL-101(Cr)@AC (with 80% removal performance and 2h adsorption time) possessed the advantages of both AC and MIL-101 (Cr). The hydrophobic-hydrophobic and electrostatic interactions were the main dominant adsorption interactions for AC and MOFs, respectively, while both interactions were influential in the MIL-101 (Cr)@AC adsorption.
Competitive Adsorption of Perfluoroalkyl Substances on Anion Exchange Resins in Simulated AFFF-impacted Groundwater

Abstract:The historical use of aqueous film forming foams (AFFF) containing perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) for firefighting and training activities has resulted in groundwater contamination. The competitive adsorption of PFASs and the effect of co-existing compounds on the removal of PFASs by anion-exchange resins were studied in this study. Perfluorohexane sulfonate (PFHxS) was selected as the representative PFAS, and resin IRA910 was found to be effective for PFHxS removal. When PFHxS was co-removed with other PFASs in bisolute system, it replaced the adsorbed PFASs with shorter C-F chains on the IRA910, while perfluorooctanesulfonate (PFOS) was not replaced by PFHxS. The competitive adsorption among PFASs decreased in the order of PFOS > PFHxS > PFOA > PFBS > PFHxA > PFBA, closely related to the hydrophobicity and functional groups of PFASs. The nonionic organic compounds could not interfere with the PFHxS removal, while ionic ones can reduce the sorption amount and their influence to the sorption of PFHxS was concentration dependent. The presence of inorganic anions slightly decreased the removal efficiency of PFHxS and the influence of different inorganic anions was similar due to multiple effects including competitive anion, screening effect, and salting-out effect in the adsorption process.
Synthesis of environmentally relevant fluorinated surfactants—a review

Abstract:In the past years there has been a growing interest in fluorinated persistent organic pollutants such as perfluorooctanesulfonic acid, perfluorooctanesulfonamides, perfluorinated carboxylic acids and fluorotelomer alcohols. Although these compounds have probably been present in the environment for many decades, we are only now beginning to realize that these environmental contaminants may have serious environmental and health effects. This article gives a state-of-the-art review of synthetic approaches that have been employed for the synthesis of these environmentally relevant fluorinated compounds. Perfluorooctanesulfonic acid derivatives, in particular, pose a problem because only a few perfluorooctanesulfonic acid derivatives are available from commercial sources--a fact that limits the ability of researchers worldwide to further study these compounds. Because of the limited literature available, this article also describes synthetic approaches for shorter chain homologues or perfluoroether analogues that can potentially be applied for the synthesis of perfluorooctanesulfonic acid derivatives. The preparation of typical starting materials for the synthesis of perfluorooctanesulfonic acid derivatives such as the perfluoroalkanesulfonyl fluorides and chlorides will be discussed. Subsequently, their conversion into relevant perfluoroalkane sulfonate salts (R(F)SO3M), sulfonamides (R(F)SO2NH2), N-alkyl sulfonamides (R(F)SO2NHR, R = alkyl), N,N-dialkyl sulfonamides (R(F)SO2NR2, R = alkyl), sulfonamidoethanol (R(F)SO2NRCH2CH2OH, R = -H, -CH3 or -C2H5) and sulfonamidoacetates (R(F)SO2NRCH2CO2H, R = -H, -CH3 or -C2H5) will be described. Many perfluorinated carboxylic acids and fluorotelomer alcohols are available from commercial sources. The review of the synthesis of these two classes of fluorinated compounds includes a review of their industrial synthesis and the synthesis of relevant degradation products.
