Abstract:The characteristics of nutrient distributions and eutrophication in the Hangzhou Bay and its adjacent waters were described and analyzed based on the data obtained on four cruises of spring,summer,autumn and winter,from July,2006 to November,2007.The results showed that distributions and variations of nutrient were not only related to input of DIN,phosphorus and silicon directly from rivers around Hangzhou Bay,but also influenced greatly by Changjiang River diluting waters.The distributions of nutrient were mainly controlled by physical mixing of diluting water with seawater and biological and chemical removal was relatively insignificant in this area.Behavior of phosphate was indicative of a buffering effect by sorption and desorption of PO3-4-P on suspended matter in spring and in winter and biological activities in some areas of Zhoushan Islands was considered to be an important factor of influence on nutrient distribution in spring and in summer.The concentrations of DIN,phosphate and silicate in the Hangzhou Bay were quite high and showed rich-nutrients condition around year.DIN overload and extra high N/P ratio in Hangzhou Bay and its adjacent waters may be one of factors of the stress of coastal eutrophication.
Distribution and Characterisation of Nitrogen-Utilising Bacteria in a Eutrophic Shallow Lake in Eastern China

Abstract:To elucidate the roles of microorganisms in the nitrogen geo-chemical cycle, the distributions of nitrogen-utilising bacteria were studied in a small eutrophic lake. Ammonifiers, nitrogen fixers and nitrate reducers were more concentrated at the severely polluted Xili sub-area than at the Centre of Outer (CO), whereas the contrary was true for autolithotrophic nitrifiers. Molecular identification of predominant ammonifiers and nitrogen fixers showed that two of the ammonifiers were gamma-Proteobacteria, two were beta-Proteobacteria, one was CFB group and the other three were low G+C% Gram positive Bacillus. Among four nitrogen fixers, one belonged to alpha-Proteobacteria, and the other three were gamma-Proteobacteria.

Abstract:The distribution and transportation of nitrate(NO-3) and phosphate(PO3-4) in Changjiang River Estuary and its adjacent East China Sea were studied on the basis of the Summer Cruise in 2009(in June and in August).It is pointed out that the impact from Changjiang River diluted water in August was larger than that in June due to larger runoff of Changjiang River in August.NO-3 and PO3-4 concentrations were more significantly correlated with salinity in June than in August,suggesting these two substances behaved nearly conservatively in June,while did not behave conservatively in August.Although N∶P ratios in August were higher than those in June,PO3-4 absolute concentrations in August were also higher in June and phytoplankton growth is different in these two months,indicating that P is not a limiting factor for phytoplankton growth.PO3-4 absolute concentrations were higher on the top than those on the bottom in June,while absolute concentrations on the top and on the bottom were higher those on 10 m and on 30 m water layers,suggesting that Changjiang River diluted water makes an important contribution to PO3-4 on the top,and mineralization to PO3-4 on the bottom.

Abstract:As the largest freshwater lake in China, Poyang Lake has been influenced by the urbanization process since the 1990s. Therefore, nutrient concentration data of Poyang Lake in the past three decades were selected for spatial and temporal heterogeneity analysis. The entropy-based method (EBM) was used to calculate the contribution weight of three independent driving factors (precipitation, agricultural land area, and urban land area) to nutrient concentrations in Poyang Lake in three different periods (1988-1997,1998-2007, and 2008-2018). The results of this study showed that the concentrations of NH3-N and total nitrogen (TN) have similar trends over time, both of which have been increasing in this century, while the total phosphorus (TP) concentration has experienced a decreasing-increasing process. The nutrient concentrations in the eastern part of Poyang Lake were at the highest level in the whole lake after 1998, and this area has good conditions for the formation of algal blooms, which need special control and management. The effect of precipitation on the nutrient concentrations of the lake in the last 30 years was most prominent. The weight of agriculture's contribution to nutrient concentrations showed a significant upward trend during the first 20 years, and agriculture and urban construction weights remained stable after experiencing opposite changes in the first 20 years. In the future, precipitation in the Poyang Lake basin needs to be of high concern, and agricultural and urban pollution control measures need to be implemented continuously. Abstract:In order to determine the concentrations, spatial and temporal distributions of nitrogen ( N) and phosphorus (P) nutrients in Chaohu Lake, the surface water samples were collected systemically in different flood seasons by grid sampling methods. Meanwhile, the predominant pollution factors and priority control area were confirmed. The results showed that the concentrations of TP, TN and NO3- -N in the inflowing rivers were higher than the V class water standard, the concentrations of nutrients in wet season were lower than those in normal season and dry season in Nanfei River and Shiwuli River, while the levels of nutrients in the other selected rivers were higher in wet season. The variations of spatial and temporal of nutrients were observed in the Chaohu Lake. The concentrations of N and P nutrients in the western part of Chaohu Lake were higher than those of the eastern part. The elevated concentrations of TP, TN and NH4+ -N were found in the dry season, while the elevated content of NO3- -N was observed in the wet season. The predominant pollution factors in Chaohu Lake were TN and NH4+ -N, the concentrations of these nutrients were decreasing from the western part of the Chaohu Lake to the eastern part of the Chaohu Lake.

Abstract:The temporal and spatial distribution of total nitrogen and total phosphate in the sediments of a shallow eutrophic Chinese lake (Lake Chao), and their relationships with the physical and chemical features of sediments, and their effects on the lake water quality and trophic state, are presented in this paper. The following results were obtained: (1) higher concentration of Tot-N and Tot-P in the sediments occurred in the summer and the autumn seasons; (2) higher annual average Tot-N and Tot-P concentrations were observed in the sediments near the various river mouths and in the western part of the lake; (3) Tot-N and Tot-P concentration in the lake sediments generally increased with increase in lake sediment Eh, pH, and Al2O3, and declined with decrease in lake sediment size diameters and SiO2; and, (4) correlations were observed in both the temporal and spatial distributions between the trophic state, Tot-N and Tot-P concentration in the lake water, and the Tot-N and Tot-P concentration found in the lake sediments.

Abstract:In this paper, the distribution characteristics of total nitrogen (TN), total phosphorus (TP) and fractions of nitrogen and phosphorus in water and surface sediments of the Pi and Shiting rivers in the dry and wet seasons were studied by molybdenum blue/ascorbic acid spectrophotometry and Standard Measurements and Testing (SMT). Correlation analysis, cluster analysis and principal component analysis were used to identified nitrogen and phosphorus pollution sources. The results showed that: (1) nitrogen and phosphorus in water and surface sediments in the study area were at different levels. (2) In the Pi river, the decomposition of animal and plant residues, the leachate from the accumulation of aquaculture wastewater and urban domestic sewage were the main sources of nitrogen and phosphorus pollution, while in the Shiting river, the unreasonable application of pesticides and fertilizers, the degradation of animal and plant residues, agricultural wastewater from agricultural drainage channels, industrial production wastewater and the weathering of agricultural wastes had a great impact on the nitrogen and phosphorus pollution. The results in this study provide reliable experimental data and a reference to local relevant departments for the implementation of effective control measures for the reduction of the nitrogen and phosphorus pollution load in the river basin.

Abstract:The sources of P and N in water-carrying lakes include exogenous input and endogenous release. However, the influence of pollution from different sources on the dynamic distribution of N and P at the sediment-water interface in water-carrying lakes remains unclear. The objectives of this study were to investigate the differences in dynamic distribution characteristics of P compounds and N elements in Lake Jiaogang, a major water-carrying lake in eastern China. Four functional regions with different types of pollutant sources and different kinds of aquatic plants were selected to study the distribution of total P (TP), inorganic P, organic P, ammonium (NH 4 + –N), and nitrate (NO 3 − –N). The results revealed that regions with internal-source pollutants contained the highest concentration of TP, Ca–P, and Fe–P with high concentrations. L–P, Al–P, mostly organic P, and soluble reactive phosphorous (SRP), the region with internal-source pollutants were lower than that with the imported-source pollutant. The concentration of dissolved NH 4 + –N showed high in regions with imported-source pollutants, however, in regions with internal-source pollutants, the dissolved NO 3 − –N was with the highest concentration. Overall, P from upstream was still dominant in the sediments despite uptake by the aquatic plants. SRP showed high concentration in regions with imported-source pollutants due to the imported pollution and the improved bioavailability by plant root exudates. Feces and feed residues from aquatic livestock breeding resulted in the highest concentration of TN, NH 4 + –N, and dissolved NO 3 −– N in the sediments of the region with internal-source pollutants. High concentrations of dissolved NH 4 + –N were due to the input of N from imported source pollutants. This study provides insights into the contributions of P and N to the eutrophication of the water-carrying lake.

Abstract:Lake Wuliangsuhai is one of the representative inland freshwater lakes in grassland areas of China, and its shrinking and eutrophication is becoming more serious. The study on the ecological and environmental effects of the shrinking and eutrophication revealed that the total nitrogen (TN) content in the surface sediment of the lake had an obvious differentiation both in longitudinal and in latitudinal direction, and had a significant correlation with organic matter content. The mean C/N ratio of the sediment ranged from 12.07 to 19.95, which meant that the organic matter was mainly come from the hydrophytes of the lake, and the eutrophication of the lake was mostly caused by its internal load. Both TN and organic matter had a clear grain-size effect in different fractions of grain sizes of surface sediment, and their contents in IV (< 63 microm) were as 3.1 - 7.6 and 2.5 - 8.0 times as those in I (>250 microm), respectively.
Biological threshold of nitrogen and phosphorus in Tiaoxi River, Taihu Lake Basin

Abstract:Eutrophication in waters was closely related to nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) loads. The main objective of this research was to investigate the relationship among suspended (or benthic) chlorophyll-a and N (or P) in Tiaoxi River. 90 water samples were collected from both main channel and tributaries in the river. Results showed that the river seriously suffered from total N pollution. Suspended chlorophyll-a had a good correlation with both N and P, while benthic chlorophyll-a was only correlated with N. According to the criterion of suspended chlorophyll-a (≤5 μg·L-1) and benthic chlorophyll-a (≤100 mg·m-2), total N threshold was set as 1.3 mg·L-1 for the tributaries which was significantly greater than the main channel (0.9 mg·L-1), while it was close (0.05 mg·L-1) for P. N and P threshold of the main channel and tributaries will help to improve the overall water quality of Tiaoxi River, and be indicative for non-point source pollution control in other similar rivers.
The characteristic and environmental pollution records of phosphorus species in different trophic regions of Taihu Lake, China

Abstract:Total organic carbon (TOC), Total nitrogen (TN) and the phosphorus species concentrations of sediment cores taken from Zhushan Bay, Meiliang Bay, and East Taihu Lake regions in Taihu Lake, a large shallow lake in China, were determined. Experimental results showed a conspicuous eutrophication trend in the northern area of Taihu Lake. Inorganic P was found to be the main phosphorus form. Fe-bound P accounted for the largest proportion of Inorganic P in Meiliang Bay, an alga-type lake region. In East Taihu Lake, a macrophytic lake region, Ca-bound P was found in higher proportions than in other lake regions, with Organic P present in similarly large proportions. With respect to Taihu Lake sediment cores, the date at approximately 20 cm layer depth was roughly identified as 1950s, while upper 5 cm layers corresponded to the turn of the century. The drastic increase in phosphorus species concentration except for Ca-bound P was indicative of the large quantities of effluent discharge into Zhushan Bay owing to the increased industrial and agricultural production from the 1950s onwards. TN, Inorganic P, Organic P, and total phosphorus (TP) concentrations increased by over 2, 2.5, 2 and 2.5-fold, respectively, over the past five decades. A large proportion of Organic P accounted for TP, and high C/N ratios indicated that East Taihu Lake can be properly classified as an oligotrophic lake.
Using Isotopes to Identify the Sources of Organic Carbon and Nitrogen in Surface Sediment in Shallow Lakes Alongside Poyang Lake

Abstract:Water exchange in shallow lakes alongside Poyang Lake is weak because of sluggish water flow, and thus these lakes are susceptible to the effects of human activities and nutrient oversupply. Therefore, it is meaningful to study the sources of organic matter in these lakes, which is supposed to provide theoretical basis for the control of eutrophication of the lakes. The sources of organic matter in surface sediment in shallow lakes (Bang, Sha, Dahuchi, and Zhu lakes) alongside Poyang Lake and urban lakes (Qingshan and Xiang lakes) in Nanchang City were investigated by measuring the δ15N and δ13C values, total organic carbon and total organic nitrogen contents, and C/N ratios of sedimented organic matter (SOM). The δ15N, δ13C, and C/N ratios indicated that SOM in Sha and Dahuchi lakes mostly originated in phytoplankton, SOM in Bang and Zhu lakes was supplied by phytoplankton and soil organic matter, SOM in Qingshan Lake was strongly affected by sewage organic matter, and SOM in Xiang Lake mainly came from aquatic macrophytes. The results demonstrate that stable isotopes in SOM in lakes can be used to discriminate between different sources of organic material.

Phosphorus Distribution And Its Balance Analysis In Lake Nansihu

Abstract:Phosphorus concentrations in surface and core sediments from the Supper Lake Nansihu were investigated. The results showed that sediment,., from Nanyanghu Lake and Nansihu Lake had significantly higher TP concentrations than that of Zhaoyanghu Lake. The domestic sewage and industry waste water directly flowed into Lake through Laoyun River and Guangfu River are the main reason for TP enrichment and Agricultural recession is also one of the important reason for the increasing TP amount. Results of phosphorus balance showed that the net phosphorus input values were 448x103-726x103 kg a(-1), and phosphorus amount increased year after year, this resembled the vertical distribution trend of core. Data suggested that most of phosphorus entered into lake were laid down into sediment, and the phosphorus content of lake water was only 1.94%-13.7% of the phosphorus content in sediments, and the net phosphorus values of input mainly contributed by human activities, such as domestic waste water, plain effluent and agricultural sewerage, since 1990.

Abstract:Abstract Under the premise that the external input of nitrogen and phosphorus is controlled, the endogenous release has become the dominant factor of lake eutrophication. In order to understand the degree of eutrophication of the landscape lake and the release of nitrogen and phosphorus in the sediment, a sediment lake in Jinan was used as a test object,three sampling points were set near the inlet, outlet and reed bushes of the landscape lake to collect water samples. And sediment samples, the three indicators of TN, NH4+-N and TP in the water body and TN, NH4+-N, TP, pH, DW, LOI in the sediment were analyzed. Release of TN, NH4+-N and TP in sediments under different temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen (DO), and disturbance conditions. The results show that both elevated temperature and low DO can accelerate the release of nitrogen and phosphorus in the sediment, while high DO can inhibit the release of N and P in the sediment; acidic conditions are favorable for the release of TN and NH4+-N, and alkaline conditions are favorable for TP release; disturbance can accelerate the release of nitrogen in the sediment, but has little effect on total phosphorus release.

Community characteristics of phytoplankton in Lake Changhu and relationships with environmental factors in the summer of 2012

Abstract:Aims Our objectives were to examine the community structure of phytoplankton and the associated environmental factors in Lake Changhu in the summer of 2012,and to investigate the degree of eutrophication in the lake. Methods Biological characteristics of the alga and integrative nutritional state index were used for evaluation of eutrophication in Lake Changhu. Phytoplankton and water samples were collected at 20 sites. The water samples were fixed,precipitated and concentrated for qualitative and quantitative analysis. Variables related to water conditions such as chlorophyll a,total phosphorus,total nitrogen,total suspended solids,secchi disk depth and chemical oxygen demand were monitored.Important findings Fifty-three species(genera) of phytoplankton were identified,belonging to Chlorophyta,Cyanophyta,Bacillariophyta,Xanthophyta,Euglenophyta,Pyrrophyta and Cryptophyta,respectively. Chlorophyta(24 species),which accounted for 38.9% of the total,was the most abundant,followed by Cyanophyta(15 species,accounting for 36.0% of the total) and Bacillariophyta(7 species,accounting for 14.1% of the total). There were 10 dominant species and Oscillatoria amphibia was a common species in four areas,with maximum dominancy of 0.72. The phytoplankton density varied from 12.03 × 106 to 62.13 × 106 cell·L–1 with an average of 27.71 × 106 cells·L–1. The highest cell density occurred in the Yuanxinhu area,followed by the Haizihu area and the Mahongtai area; the Miaohu area was observed to have the lowest cell density. Biodiversity index of phytoplankton varied from 0.89 to 3.24,and evenness index varied in a range of 0.23–0.83. Based on the two methods of eutrophicationevaluation,the water was in moderately eutrophic and eutrophic state in Lake Changhu in the summer of 2012. Canonical correlation analysis suggested that the total nitrogen,total suspended solids,total phosphorus,dissolved oxygen and nitrite nitrogen were the main environmental factors affecting the spatial distribution of phytoplankton community in Lake Changhu in summer. Most of the Cyanophyta(Dactylococcopsis acicularis,Oscillatoria amphibia,Phormidium and Anabeana) had a great demand for total nitrogen. Affected by geographical feature,human activities and the hydrodynamic features,the sampling sites showed apparent regional differentiations as revealed by canonical correspondence analysis.

Abstract:Physicochemical factors and nutrients are important factors affecting aquatic ecosystems.Differences in physicochemical and nutrimental factors determine variation in phytoplankton community structure.Therefore,evaluation of water quality and nutrient status is necessary.Since 2015,we have studied the phytoplankton,and the physicochemical and nutrimental factors of the Fenhe water storage area.The results showed that (1) Cyanophyta and Chorophyta constituted the majority of the plankton community in the regions studied.Throughout the year,Cyanophyta was the most abundant phylum of planktonic algae.The dominant species,including Chroococcus minutus,Merismopedia tenuissima,Oscillatoria tenuis,and Microcystis aeruginosa,all of accounted for 42.95％ and 59.24％ of the algal community during the wet season and the dry season,respectively.Simultaneously,the concentration of chlorophyll-a revealed strong temporal and spatial variation in the Fenhe water storage area of Taiyuan,(annual mean:38.13mg/L;range:17.04-84.60mg/L).The chlorophyll-a concentration during the wet season was significantly higher than that in the dry season.During the wet season and the dry season,the spatial distribution patterns of chlorophyll-a were similar,increasing from upstream to downstream.(2) The water quality indicated eutrophication in the studied area.With rapid socio-economic development,increase in population and industrial enterprises,and urban-scale expansion,multiple test sites near the city center revealed that high levels of household-generated garbage,sewage,and industrial waste discharge into the Fenhe water storage area,owing to the lack of strict control measures.Total phosphorus and the other indicators were on the higher side,indicating that the water body is in mild or moderate eutrophic state (Chaicun Bridge,Shengli Bridge,Yingze Bridge,and Changfeng Bridge areas).In addition,at one point,some sites reached a severe eutrophic state (Nanneihuan Bridge,Jifen Bridge,Nanzhonghuan Bridge,and Jiuyuanshahe Bridge),which resulted the destruction of the ecological environment.(3) Chlorophyll is essential for photosynthesis.Measuring chlorophyll-a concentration could reflect the phytoplankton biomass and water quality status.The species composition of the phytoplankton community was closely correlated with chlorophyll-a content,dynamic variation of the physical and chemical index,and comprehensive index of water body.The correlation and principal components analyses revealed significant positive correlation of chlorophyll-a concentration with temperature,total nitrogen (TN),total phosphorus (TP),chemical oxygen demand (COD),and permanganate index (CODMn).Further,phosphorous might be a limiting factor,as indicated by its strong effect on phytoplankton abundance.
Spatial–Temporal Variations of Total Nitrogen and Phosphorus in Poyang, Dongting and Taihu Lakes from Landsat-8 Data

Abstract:Poyang Lake, Dongting Lake, and Taihu Lake are the largest freshwater lakes in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River, China. In recent years, the eutrophication level of lakes has increased with the development of the social economy and caused many environmental and social problems. The concentrations of total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorus (TP) are the key indicators of the degree of eutrophication, but the traditional ground monitoring methods are not capable of capturing such parameters in whole lakes with high spatial-temporal resolution. In this paper, empirical models are established and evaluated between the TN and TP and remote sensing spectral factors in the three lakes using Landsat 8 Operational Land Imager (OLI) satellite data and in-situ data. The results show that the inversion accuracy is higher than 75%. The TN and TP concentrations in the three lakes are inversed based on the Google Earth Engine (GEE) platform from 2014 to 2020 and their spatial-temporal variations are analyzed. The results show that the concentrations of TN and TP in Poyang Lake were decreased by 5.99% and 7.13% over 7 years, respectively, and the TN in Dongting Lake was decreased by 5.25% while the TP remained stable. The temporal changes in TN and TP concentrations displayed seasonal variations. A low concentration was observed in summer and high concentrations were in spring and winter. The average concentrations of TN and TP in Taihu Lake were higher than that of the other two lakes. The TP concentration was increased by 17.3% over 7 years, while the TN concentration remained almost stable. The variation in TN in Taihu Lake was the same as the growth cycle of algae, with higher value in spring and winter and lower value in summer, while the concentration of TP was lower in spring and winter and higher in summer. The spatial distribution of TN and TP concentrations in the three major lakes was significantly affected by human activities, and the concentrations of TN and TP were higher in areas near cities and agricultural activities.

Abstract:Purpose The dynamics of phosphorus in lake sediment have received much attention due to their potential to trigger eutrophication. This study was aimed to reveal the distribution pattern of phosphorus forms, total nitrogen (TN), and total organic carbon (TOC), estimate the contributions of different phosphorus forms to total phosphorus, and evaluate the ecological risks of nitrogen and phosphorus pollution in the sediments from Daye Lake, Central China. Method Thirty-nine surface sediment samples were collected in the dry season. TOC and TN were analyzed by an elemental analyzer. Phosphorus forms were determined based on the European standard SMT (Standard Measurements and Testing) method. The integrated pollution index method was used to assess the TN and TP pollution levels of sediment. The relationships between different phosphorus forms and TOC and TN in sediments were also discussed. Result and discussion TOC, TN, and TP contents in the sediments of Daye Lake were 0.96–6.15%, 859.8–5562.533 mg kg −1 , and 973.06–7982.86 mg kg −1 , respectively. The average contents of phosphorus in various forms were IP (1605.24 mg kg −1 ) > Ca-P (1093.39 mg kg −1 ) > OP (897.49 mg kg −1 ) > Fe/Al-P (523.79 mg kg −1 ). The contents of different phosphorus forms showed certain spatial differences due to the impact of human activities, agricultural, and industrial production. IP was the most important form of phosphorus in sediments, accounting for 49 ~ 63% of TP. TOC/TN ratio in the sediments ranged from 7.23 to 11.35, indicating that endogenous pollution was the main source. The results of TN and TP pollution in the surface sediments of Daye Lake evaluated by single pollution standard index method showed that the standard index of the TN ( S TN ) ranged from 0.86 to 5.56 and the standard index of the TP ( S TP ) ranged from 1.62 to 13.30. It indicated that N and P in sediments of Daye Lake were seriously polluted, and there was a potential risk of endogenous pollutant release which may further aggravate the eutrophication of water body. Conclusion The distribution of TN, TP, and TOC in the sediments showed a gradual decreasing trend from the downstream to the upstream in Daye Lake. TP in the sediments mainly existed in the form of IP. IP content was mainly influenced by Fe/Al-P and Ca-P. The ecological risk of nitrogen and phosphorous in the sediments was serious, and the water body was threatened by eutrophication.

Abstract:Nitrogen pollution has become a worldwide problem and the source identification is important for the development of pertinent control measures. In this study, isotope end members (rain, nitrogen fertilizer, untreated/treated sewage), and samples (river water discharging to Taihu lake, lake water, aquatic organisms of different trophic levels) were taken during 2010-2015 to examine their δ15N values and nutrient stoichiometry. Results indicated that phytoplankton (primary producers), which directly take up and incorporate N from the lake water, had a similar δ15N value (14.1‰ ± 3.2) to the end member of treated sewage (14.0‰ ± 7.5), and the most frequently observed δ15N value in the lake water was 8-12‰, both indicating the dominant impact of the sewage discharge. Relationship analysis between N isotope value of nitrate and nitrate concentration indicated that different N cycling existed between the algae-dominated northwest lake (NW) and the macrophyte-dominated southeast lake (SE), which is a result of both impacts of river inputs and denitrification. Our nutrient stoichiometry analysis showed that the lake water had a significantly higher N:P ratio than that of algae (p < 0.05), suggesting that N is available in excess relative to the amount demanded by the algae. The long-term trend of the socio-economic development in the watershed further confirmed that the rapid population increase and urbanization have resulted in a great change in the N loading and source proportion. We suggest that although P control is necessary in terms of eutrophication control, N pollution control is urgent for the water quality and ecological recovery for Taihu lake.
Evaluation of the distribution and mobility of labile phosphorus in sediment profiles of Lake Nansi, the largest eutrophic freshwater lake in northern China

Abstract:Understanding various biogeochemical processes, especially in eutrophic sediments, necessitates fine-scale phosphorus (P) measurements in pore waters. To the best of our knowledge, the fine-scale distributions of P across the sediment profiles of Lake Nansi have rarely been investigated. Herein we evaluated the dynamic distributions of labile P and Fe across the sediment-water interface (SWI) of Lake Nansi at two-dimensional (2D) and sub-millimeter resolution, using well-established colorimetric diffusive gradients in thin films (DGT) methodology. The concentrations of labile P in all investigated sediment profiles exhibited strong spatial variations, ranging from 0 to 1.50 mg/L with a considerable number of hotspots. Lake Nanyang (0.55 ± 0.21 mg/L) had the highest mean concentration of labile P, followed by Lake Dushan (0.38 ± 0.19 mg/L), Lake Weishan (0.28 ± 0.21 mg/L), and Lake Zhaoyang (0.18 ± 0.09 mg/L). The highest concentrations of labile P were always detected in Lake Dushan, which had been subjected to excessive exogenous P pollution. The co-distributions of labile P and Fe in the majority of the sediment of Lake Nansi confirmed highly positive correlations ( P < 0.01), suggesting that the mobility of labile P throughout the SWI was likely governed by iron redox processes. The apparent diffusion fluxes of P across the SWI ranged from −7.7 to 33.6 μg/m 2 ·d, with a mean value of 5.26 ± 7.80 μg/m 2 ·d. Positive apparent fluxes for labile P were recorded in most sediment cores, demonstrating the strong upward mobility of P from the sediment to the overlying water. Our results provided accurate and extensive information regarding the micro-distribution and dynamic exchange of labile P across the SWI. This allows for a better understanding of eutrophication processes and the implementation of P management strategies in Lake Nansi.
