Abstract:Based to the monthly monitoring data of monitoring points in the Dianchi lake and the Taihu lake,analysis of pollutions with lake water at the same time in different geographical situation was comparatively studied,and the correlation between water quality of surface water and biochemical characters of cyanobacterial biomass was assessed.The results revealed that the degree of eutrophication in the Dianchi Lake was higher than that of the Taihu Lake during monitoring.Water quality index in the Dianchi lake showed increase-reduce-increase,and was highest in June.While the water quality index in the Taihu lake showed a rising trend monthly.The content of kjeldahl nitrogen,total phosphorous and the total nutrients(N+P2O5+K2O) of the Dianchi Lake cyanobacteria biomass was same as the Taihu Lake,but the C/N was higher than the Taihu Lake.The content of the heavy metal elements in the various samples levels were lower than the organic fertilizer industry standards(NY525-2011) except for As and Cd.Correlation analysis showed that lead and chromium of cyanobacteria biomass had significant homology.In addition,the content of ammonium nitrogen in surface water could be used as the extent indicator of eutrophication.
Using dual isotopes and a Bayesian isotope mixing model to evaluate sources of nitrate of Tai Lake, China

Abstract:Identification and quantification of sources of nitrate (NO3–) in freshwater lakes provide useful information for management of eutrophication and improving water quality in lakes. Dual δ15N- and δ18O-NO3– isotopes and a Bayesian isotope mixing model were applied to identify sources of NO3– and estimate their proportional contributions to concentrations of NO3– in Tai Lake, China. In waters of Tai Lake, values for δ15N-NO3– ranged from 3.8 to 10.1‰, while values of δ18O ranged from 2.2 to 12.0‰. These results indicated that NO3– was derived primarily from agricultural and industrial sources. Stable isotope analysis in R called SIAR model was used to estimate proportional contributions from four potential NO3– sources (agricultural, industrial effluents, domestic sewage, and rainwater). SIAR output revealed that agricultural runoff provided the greatest proportion (50.8%) of NO3– to the lake, followed by industrial effluents (33.9%), rainwater (8.4%), and domestic sewage (6.8%). Contributions of those primary sources of NO3– to sub-regions of Tai Lake varied significantly (p < 0.05). For the northern region of the lake, industrial source (35.4%) contributed the greatest proportion of NO3–, followed by agricultural runoff (27.4%), domestic sewage (21.3%), and rainwater (15.9%). Whereas for the southern region, the proportion of NO3– contributed from agriculture (38.6%) was slightly greater than that contributed by industry (30.8%), which was similar to results for nearby inflow tributaries. Thus, to improve water quality by addressing eutrophication and reduce primary production of phytoplankton, NO3– from both nonpoint agricultural sources and industrial point sources should be mitigated.Graphical abstractᅟ

Abstract:In order to control nitrogen (N) pollution of Lake Taihu, China, we studied the spatial and temporal distribution characteristics of inorganic N in inflowing rivers polluted by industry, agriculture, and domestic sewage during low, moderate, and high flow periods. The results showed that dissolved total nitrogen (DTN) was the main fraction of total nitrogen (TN) input from these rivers. Inflowing rivers had distinct impacts on TN, DTN, ammonium N (NH4+), and nitrate N (NO3−) concentrations of Lake Taihu during the low flow period. Particulate nitrogen (PN) had an impact on Lake Taihu during the three flow periods and all the three types of rivers would increase PN concentration in the lake. Rivers polluted by agriculture had the greatest impact on Lake Taihu’s TN, DTN, NO3−, and dissolved inorganic N (DIN) concentrations, while rivers polluted by industry had the greatest impact on NH4+ concentration. Therefore, agriculture and industry should be key targets for nutrient reductions. The in-lake N concentrations were higher than those of inflowing rivers during moderate and high flow periods.

Abstract:Nitrogen is a nutrient element of crop,and it is also one of the main factor of water pollution and eutrophication.Recently,the researches and treatments of nitrogen pollution become a key focus of water environment protection.In this study,water samples were from 7 points along the main stream of Cao-e River in 12 months(once per month).The spatial-temporal variation of water environmental factors(precipitation,temperature,pH,dissolved oxygen,turbidity and electrical conductivity) and nitrogen index were analyzed in every sample.The nitrogen index included total nitroge(TN),disoved nitrogen(DN),ammonium nitrogen(NH4+-N) and nitrate nitrogen(NO3——N).The results were discribed as follows:(1) In the period of crop growing,the precipitation can produce nitrogen loss from farmland,and accordingly increase the TN concentration.However plenty of rainfall also can dilute the TN.(2) DN was the main part of TN,and accounted for 74% of TN averagely.The temporal relationship between turbidity and DN concentration was negative.The DN concentration showed a downtrend from upper stream to lower reacher of the river spatially.(3) There was a negative temporal relationship between temperature and NH4+-N concentration.DN concentration presented a downtrend from upstream to downstream of the river spatially.(4) There was a positive temporal relationship between temperature and NO3——N,and there was no obvious trend for NO3——N concentration between upper reacher and lower reacher spatially.
Isotopic fractionation of particulate organic matter and its biogeochemical implication in the littoral zone of Lake Taihu, China

Abstract:Signatures of stable isotope ratios have previously been used to trace the source and transport of particulate organic matter (POM) in freshwater and marine ecosystems. In this study, water columns were collected at 22 sites in the littoral zone of Lake Taihu in 2014 to investigate the distribution and concentration of nutrients and the stable isotope signatures of POM, and their potential interrelation. Generally, mean concentration of nitrogen forms (NH4+-N) showed substantial variation, probably because they had received large amounts of wastewater from various local industrial enterprises. Source analysis by stable carbon and nitrogen isotopic ratios showed that the main POM sources were phytoplankton. Contrasting correlations were obtained between δ15N and N concentrations in effluent river mouths when compared with influent river mouths. In effluent river mouths, there was a significant positive correlation between δ15N and nitrogen concentration (total nitrogen and ammonia-nitrogen), in contrast with the negative correlation in influent river mouths. According to these results, more factors should be taken into consideration when stable carbon and nitrogen isotopes of POM are used to assess the feeding relationship between consumers and prey, as well as the energy flow pathways that support the lake pelagic food webs.
Underestimated nutrient from aquaculture ponds to Lake Eutrophication: A case study on Taihu Lake Basin

Abstract:Nitrogen and phosphorus discharges from freshwater pond aquaculture have become an important source of eutrophication in lakes. Based on multi-source remote sensing and Google Earth Engine, we extracted aquaculture ponds nationwide and calculated their quantities and area density distributions. Experimental results reveal that regions with densely distributed aquaculture ponds are also hotspots for severe lake cyanobacterial blooms, especially in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River. Presently, freshwater aquaculture production in this basin accounts for 1/3 of the total in the world. With the increasing pond area, Total Nitrogen (TN) and Total Phosphorus (TP) discharged into the Yangtze River Basin rises year by year, leading to decrease in the water quality of the basin. Downstream of this basin, Taihu Lake, the number and area of ponds have increased fivefold since 1984, reaching 575 km 2 in 2016. Using the unit area production and the nitrogen-phosphorus discharge per kilogram of aquatic product (27.7 g/kg of TN, 4.43 g/kg of TP), we calculated that the TN and TP discharge in 2016 was as high as 7,185 tons and 1,150 tons. These discharges essentially enter Lake Taihu through rivers, they would account for 21.7 % and 64.4 % of Taihu Lake's net nitrogen and phosphorus input. From 2000 to 2020, both the scale of aquaculture ponds and floating cyanobacteria inversion results showed an increasing trend, and the failure of cyanobacteria control in Taihu Lake is linked to the increase in TN and TP excretion from these ponds. From 2020 to 2022, the strict zero-Covid policy significantly reduced social gatherings and, consequently, led to a substantial decrease in the demand for aquatic products. However, with the relaxation of control measures, the cyanobacteria in Taihu Lake resurged and cyanobacteria harvesting enters the norm in 2023. The underestimated discharge of nitrogen and phosphorus from aquaculture ponds will affect public health and the sustainability of development.

Atmospheric Nitrogen Deposition Associated with the Eutrophication of Taihu Lake

Abstract:Environmental effects of excessive amounts of atmospheric nitrogen (N) deposition have raised a great deal of attention. In the present study, the characteristics of N deposition and its contribution to water eutrophication were investigated in the Taihu Basin. The results showed that the annual average total deposition (TN), total wet deposition (TNW), and total dry deposition (TND) rates were 6154, 1142, and 5012 kg·km−2, respectively. Moreover, seasonal fluctuations in TN, TNW, and TND deposition were observed, with a higher N deposition rate occurring in spring and summer. Spatially, the distribution of TN and TND deposition throughout the Taihu Basin was similar. However, the TN deposition rate declined gradually from the southeast to the northwest, while the TNW deposition rate increased. A significant positive correlation was also found between the TN deposition contents with rainfall R=0.803,P=0.01, rainfall frequency R=0.767,P<0.01, and rainfall intensity R=0.659,P<0.05. The TN deposition concentration was significantly negatively correlated with rainfall R=−0.999,P<0.01, rain frequency R=−0.805,P<0.01, and rainfall intensity R=−0.783,P<0.01. The riverine input of TN was estimated to be 112,500 t·N·a−1, and the main N pollutants originated from domestic sewage (accounting for 48.88%) and agriculture (accounting for 28.17%). Livestock and aquaculture contributed 90% of the agricultural pollutants. Additionally, TN deposition contributed 14,400 t N·a−1 to the lake, which accounted for 12.36% of the annual riverine TN inputs. The TN deposition load already exceeds the eutrophication critical load in theory. Furthermore, the contribution of N deposition to the lake has been increasing in recent years, which may accelerate eutrophication of Taihu Lake.
Identifying Diffused Nitrate Sources in a Stream in an Agricultural Field Using a Dual Isotopic Approach.

Abstract:Nitrate (NO3(-)) pollution is a severe problem in aquatic systems in Taihu Lake Basin in China. A dual isotope approach (δ(15)NNO3(-) and δ(18)ONO3(-)) was applied to identify diffused NO3(-) inputs in a stream in an agricultural field at the basin in 2013. The site-specific isotopic characteristics of five NO3(-) sources (atmospheric deposition, AD; NO3(-) derived from soil organic matter nitrification, NS; NO3(-) derived from chemical fertilizer nitrification, NF; groundwater, GW; and manure and sewage, M&S) were identified. NO3(-) concentrations in the stream during the rainy season [mean±standard deviation (SD)=2.5±0.4mg/L] were lower than those during the dry season (mean±SD=4.0±0.5mg/L), whereas the δ(18)ONO3(-) values during the rainy season (mean±SD=+12.3±3.6‰) were higher than those during the dry season (mean±SD=+0.9±1.9‰). Both chemical and isotopic characteristics indicated that mixing with atmospheric NO3(-) resulted in the high δ(18)O values during the rainy season, whereas NS and M&S were the dominant NO3(-) sources during the dry season. A Bayesian model was used to determine the contribution of each NO3(-) source to total stream NO3(-). Results showed that reduced N nitrification in soil zones (including soil organic matter and fertilizer) was the main NO3(-) source throughout the year. M&S contributed more NO3(-) during the dry season (22.4%) than during the rainy season (17.8%). AD generated substantial amounts of NO3(-) in May (18.4%), June (29.8%), and July (24.5%). With the assessment of temporal variation of diffused NO3(-) sources in agricultural field, improved agricultural management practices can be implemented to protect the water resource and avoid further water quality deterioration in Taihu Lake Basin.

Abstract:Dongting Lake is the second largest freshwater lake in China. It is suffering from significant eutrophication as a result of excessive nutrients inputs, among which nitrogen (N) is becoming a major contributor. The objective of this study is to document the occurrence and controls on N transport and transformation in riparian zones of Dongting Lake wetland. Field experiments were conducted in the cultivated Li River (LR) and uncultivated Yuan River (YR) regions of the wetlands from June to November, 2014. Groundwater depth, redox potential (Eh), pH, and temperature were measured in situ. Groundwater and surface water samples were collected to determine concentrations of nitrate nitrogen (NO3−–N), nitrite nitrogen (NO2−–N), and ammonia nitrogen (NH4+–N). The results showed that NH4+–N was the dominant N pollutant with maximum average value of 2.7760 mg L−1. All the groundwater samples were rated to Class V based on NH4+–N content according to the groundwater quality standard, indicating the load of N in riparian zones had exceeded their capacity for assimilation and purification. Internal controls (including Eh and pH, temperature, and groundwater depth) and external controls (including surface water, land use, and rainfall) were analyzed in detail. The results suggested that Eh and pH were more significant in controlling N transport and transformation than temperature and groundwater depth; external controls influenced N fates through imposing an effect on internal controls. This study will provide important insights and a scientific basis for N pollution treatment and better protection of the Dongting Lake wetlands.

Abstract:Being able to quantify nutrient stoichiometry in the waterbodies is especially important given its strong effects on a variety of ecological processes. China has made huge progress in the improvement of surface water quality, but the accompanying changes to water nutrient stoichiometry and implications are not well understood yet. Our results have shown that the water nutrient cycles have been decoupled in China's populated regions, and population density and GDP values in the same catchment are useful in explaining the variances of lake N:P stoichiometry in East China Lake Region. In other regions, water N and P tend to respond to the selected parameters in a similar way, leading to the poor prediction of N:P stoichiometry. With the progress of water management in China, a similar change of water nutrients and their stoichiometry as the developed countries is occurring, i.e., faster decrease of TP concentrations than TN, and continuing increase of N:P ratios. It is necessary for the managers to be aware of the quick and large-scale changes of nutrient stoichiometry in the water, since the ecological risk caused by the changes to the aquatic systems is still not well known. Abstract:Drinking water reservoirs are threatened globally by anthropogenic nitrogen pollution. Hydrochemistry and isotopes were analyzed to identify spatial and temporal varieties of main nitrate sources in a large drinking water reservoir in East China. The results showed that NO3− was the main nitrogen form in both the dry and wet seasons, but dissolved organic nitrogen (DON) was increased in the wet season. The δ15N-NO3− values (+ 1.3‰ to + 11.8‰) and δ18O-NO3− values (+ 2.5‰ to + 13.5‰), combined with principal component analysis (PCA), indicated that chemical fertilizer was the main nitrate source during the dry season, while chemical fertilizer, soil N, and sewage/manure were the main nitrate sources during the wet season in the Qiandao Lake area. And, the nitrate isotopes showed the significant nitrification and assimilation in the Qiandao Lake area. A Bayesian isotopic mixing model (Stable Isotope Analysis in R) was applied to the spatial and seasonal trends in the proportional contribution of four NO3− sources (chemical fertilizer (CF), soil nitrogen (SN), sewage and manure (SM), and atmospheric deposition (AD)) in the Qiandao Lake area. It was revealed that CF was the most important nitrate source in the dry season, accounting for 53.4% with 19.2% of SM and 18.9% of SN, while the contribution of SN increased in the wet season, accounting for 31.6%, followed by CF (30.8%) and then SM (24.2%). The main nitrate sources in the urban area, rural area, and central lake area were CF and SN, accounting for 66.1% in the urban area, 71.7% in the rural area, and 68.2% in the central lake area. Measures should be made to improve chemical fertilizer use efficiency and to reduce nitrogen loss in the Qiandao Lake area..

Abstract:The sources of P and N in water-carrying lakes include exogenous input and endogenous release. However, the influence of pollution from different sources on the dynamic distribution of N and P at the sediment-water interface in water-carrying lakes remains unclear. The objectives of this study were to investigate the differences in dynamic distribution characteristics of P compounds and N elements in Lake Jiaogang, a major water-carrying lake in eastern China. Four functional regions with different types of pollutant sources and different kinds of aquatic plants were selected to study the distribution of total P (TP), inorganic P, organic P, ammonium (NH 4 + –N), and nitrate (NO 3 − –N). The results revealed that regions with internal-source pollutants contained the highest concentration of TP, Ca–P, and Fe–P with high concentrations. L–P, Al–P, mostly organic P, and soluble reactive phosphorous (SRP), the region with internal-source pollutants were lower than that with the imported-source pollutant. The concentration of dissolved NH 4 + –N showed high in regions with imported-source pollutants, however, in regions with internal-source pollutants, the dissolved NO 3 − –N was with the highest concentration. Overall, P from upstream was still dominant in the sediments despite uptake by the aquatic plants. SRP showed high concentration in regions with imported-source pollutants due to the imported pollution and the improved bioavailability by plant root exudates. Feces and feed residues from aquatic livestock breeding resulted in the highest concentration of TN, NH 4 + –N, and dissolved NO 3 −– N in the sediments of the region with internal-source pollutants. High concentrations of dissolved NH 4 + –N were due to the input of N from imported source pollutants. This study provides insights into the contributions of P and N to the eutrophication of the water-carrying lake.

Abstract:The effects of nitrogen deposition reduction on nutrient loading in freshwaters have been widely studied, especially in remote regions. However, understanding of the ecological effects is still rather limited. Herein, we re-estimated nitrogen deposition, both of wet and dry deposition, in Lake Taihu with monthly monitoring data from 2010 to 2021. Our results showed that the atmospheric deposition of reactive nitrogen (namely NH4+ and NO3-) in Lake Taihu was 4.94-11.49 kton/yr, which equaled 13.9%-27.3% of the riverine loading. Dry deposition of NH4+ and NO3- contributed 53.1% of the bulk deposition in Lake Taihu. Ammonium was the main component of both wet and dry deposition, which may have been due to the strong agriculture-related activities around Lake Taihu. Nitrogen deposition explained 24.9% of the variation in phytoplankton community succession from 2010 to 2021 and was the highest among all the environmental factors. Atmospheric deposition offset the effects of external nitrogen reduction during the early years and delayed the emergence of nitrogen-fixing cyanobacterial dominance in Lake Taihu. Our results implied that a decrease in nitrogen deposition due to a reduction in fertilizer use, especially a decrease in NH4+ deposition, could limit diatoms and promote non-nitrogen-fixing cyanobacterial dominance, followed by nitrogen-fixing taxa. This result was also applied to other shallow eutrophic lakes around the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River, where significant reduction of fertilizer use recorded during the last decades.
Nitrogen Cycling in Lake Taihu, an Eutrophic Shallow Lake

Abstract:It is generally considered that nitrogen is one of the major factors regulating the trophic status of lakes,and the biogeochemical cycling of nitrogen serves the most important function in lake systems.Lakes often receive large anthropogenic inputs of nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphorus that cause lake eutrophication,and the exchange of nitrogen-compounds between sediment and water has a profound effect in all kinds of lakes.Such increased nutrient loading promotes the growth of phytoplankton while rooted plants and benthic are snppressed due to reduced light availability,and the transfer of the nitrogen through the food chains in algal lake and macrophytic lake is different accordingly.In order to probe the nitrogen cycling in different lake bays of Lake Taihn,DIN ( Dissolved Inorganic Nitrogen) transformation rates of algae-dominated (Meiliang Bay) and macrophyte-dominated (East Lake Taihu) lake zones were measured in laboratory for 20 days.The results demonstrated that rapid nitrifications existed in the sediments and water of the two lake zones,and there were remarkable negative correlations between NH4+-N and NO3--N (p ＜ 0.05 or p ＜0.01 ).Nitrification rates of algae-dominated zone were little higher than that of macrophyte-dominated zone in the microcosm under the same condition,and the higher the initial NH4 +-N concentration,the higher the nitrification rate.Nitrification rates decreased gradually with time when no external nitrogen added.Denitrification proceeded strongerly in Meiliang Bay than that in East Lake Taihu.The decline of TN in the sediment after the experiment was not notable (3.7％),however,the decreases of TN were 26.7％ and 42.2％ in the water body of macrophytic and algal lake zones,respectively.Sediment was the most important place for denitrification.Transformation potential of DIN in short time reflected both the velocity of nitrogen transformation and the effect of different zones on lake nitrogen cycling.Thus,nitrogen cycling processes such as nitrification,denitrification,nitrogen fixation and anammox ( anaerobic ammonium oxidation) need be emphasized in Lake Taihu,an eutrophic shallow lake.
Using Dual Isotopes of Nitrate to Identify the Source of Nitrogen Pollution in the Songhua River Basin, Northeast China

Abstract:Nitrogen pollution is a severe problem in the Songhua River Basin (SHR) in China. Samples were collected from 36 sections of the SHR during the high, low, and flat seasons of the river, and the main sources of nitrogen in the water were qualitatively analyzed with isotope data for nitrogen and oxygen of nitrate. The contribution rates of each major pollution source were quantitatively analyzed using the Iso Source mass balance model. The results from these experiments indicate that the values for δ15N-NO3 and δ18O-NO3 in the flat flow season range from 1.52‰ to 14.55‰ and −14.26‰ to 2.03‰, respectively. The values for δ15N-NO3 and δ18O-NO3 in the low flow season range from 6.66‰ to 15.46‰ and −5.82‰ to 65.70‰, respectively. In the low flow season, nitrogen comes from the input of domestic and manure sewage (53%) and soil organic N (45%). The values of δ15N-NO3 and δ18O-NO3 in the high flow season range from 2.07‰ to 14.24‰ and −3.99‰ to 8.03‰, respectively. In the high flow season, nitrogen comes from soil organic nitrogen (41%), domestic and manure sewage (32%), and nitrogen fertilizer (27%), which are the main sources of nitrogen pollution in the SHR. The conclusions from the qualitative and quantitative analysis of nitrogen sources in the SHR can provide a scientific basis for the source control and treatment of nitrogen pollution.

Abstract:Water exchange in shallow lakes alongside Poyang Lake is weak because of sluggish water flow, and thus these lakes are susceptible to the effects of human activities and nutrient oversupply. Therefore, it is meaningful to study the sources of organic matter in these lakes, which is supposed to provide theoretical basis for the control of eutrophication of the lakes. The sources of organic matter in surface sediment in shallow lakes (Bang, Sha, Dahuchi, and Zhu lakes) alongside Poyang Lake and urban lakes (Qingshan and Xiang lakes) in Nanchang City were investigated by measuring the δ15N and δ13C values, total organic carbon and total organic nitrogen contents, and C/N ratios of sedimented organic matter (SOM). The δ15N, δ13C, and C/N ratios indicated that SOM in Sha and Dahuchi lakes mostly originated in phytoplankton, SOM in Bang and Zhu lakes was supplied by phytoplankton and soil organic matter, SOM in Qingshan Lake was strongly affected by sewage organic matter, and SOM in Xiang Lake mainly came from aquatic macrophytes. The results demonstrate that stable isotopes in SOM in lakes can be used to discriminate between different sources of organic material.

Abstract:Rapid population increase and economic growth in eastern China has lead to the degradation of many water bodies in the region, such as Lake Taihu, the third largest freshwater lake in China. Using data from recent investigations, the correlations between algae (measured as chlorophyll-a) and water quality indices in Lake Taihu were described by multivariate statistical analyses, and the key driving factors for the lake eutrophication were identified by principal component analysis. Results revealed strong spatiotemporal variation in the correlations between algae and water quality indices, suggesting that the limiting factor for the dominant algae growth depends on seasonality and location and it is necessary to reduce both nitrogen and phosphorus inputs for a long-term eutrophication control in this hyper-eutrophic system. Water temperature was another important controlling factor for algal growth in the lake. Using principal component analysis, nutrient contaminations from anthropogenic and natural inputs were identified as the key driving factor for the water quality problems of the lake. Moreover, five principal components were extracted and characterized with high spatial and seasonal variations in Lake Taihu. The key driving factors were believed to influence spatial variations including heavily polluted areas located in the northern and northwestern parts of the lake, where many manufacturing factories were built and wastewater from domestic and industrial plants was discharged. Based on this analysis, attention should be paid to effective land management, industrial wastewater treatment, and macrophytic vegetation restoration to reduce the pollutant loads and improve water quality. Principal component analysis was found to be a useful and effective method to reduce the number of analytical parameters without notably impairing the quality of information in this study.

Abstract:The effects of atmospheric nitrogen deposition on freshwater ecosystems have not been widely studied since the contribution of nitrogen deposition varies spatially and temporally among studies due to the complexity of atmospheric deposition. The large uncertainty makes it difficult for lake management to develop lake nutrient management strategies. This study re-estimated the nitrogen deposition in Lake Taihu, with an emphasis on gaseous deposition, by combining long-term observations and improved dry deposition observation methods. Our results showed that the atmospheric deposition of nitrogen in Lake Taihu was 3696~4743 kg/km 2 /yr and accounted for 20-23% of the riverine loading. Dry deposition (1979~3024 kg/km 2 /yr) contributed more than 50% of bulk deposition in Lake Taihu, especially gaseous deposition, which contributed 63% (ranging from 28.5% to 92.1%) to dry deposition, which has been neglected in the past. Ammonia is the main component of both wet and dry deposition, which may be strongly related to agriculture-related activities around Lake Taihu. The nitrogen concentrations of the water body, intensity of wave disturbance caused by wind, and duration of observations significantly affect the observed atmospheric gaseous deposition flux. Dry deposition in Lake Taihu could increase the nitrogen concentration to 1.4 mg/L in the lake water and might delay the dominance of nitrogen-fixing cyanobacteria in Lake Taihu, where the nitrogen concentration has continuously declined since 2007 and has tended to be limited recently. Our study confirmed that atmospheric deposition offset the effects of external nitrogen reduction and delayed the emergence of nitrogen-fixing cyanobacterial dominance in Lake Taihu. In addition, lake ecosystem restoration should be coordinated with atmospheric management.
Spatiotemporal Variations in Nitrogen and Phosphorus in a Large Man-Made Lake and Their Relationships with Human Activities

Abstract:Nitrogen and phosphorus excessive enrichment are major causes of water eutrophication, and variations in nutrients enrichment are strongly influenced by human activities. In this study, annual average water quality from 2001 to 2018 was used to explore the spatiotemporal variations in total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorus (TP) and their relationships with human activities. Spatially, TN and TP concentrations exhibited significant variations across the five sub-lake zones, and their values were relatively higher in the NW lake zone than the other sub-lake zones. Temporally, TN concentration exhibited weak correlations with years in the NW (R2 = 0.37, p < 0.05) and NE (R2 = 0.43, p < 0.05) lake zones and significant and positive correlations with years in the SW (R2 = 0.62, p < 0.05), SE (R2 = 0.79, p < 0.05), and C (R2 = 0.84, p < 0.05) lake zones. TP concentration exhibited decreasing trends in all lake zones except the NW lake zone (R2 = 0.37, p < 0.05), its value shows a relatively low level and is the restrictive factor to algal growth. The trophic state of the Lake Qiandaohu was determined as mesotrophic. Gross domestic product (GDP) and construction land exhibited strong correlations with TN and TP. Moreover, agriculture nonpoint source pollution was the largest contributor to the excessive enrichment of TN and TP, resulting in water eutrophication. In addition, aquaculture was another major source of nutrients starting in 1999. Although the managers of Lake Qiandaohu implemented a protection-oriented fishery policy, good results cannot be easily achieved with a unilateral policy concerning environmental protection. Thus, comprehensive policies may be more effective than unilateral policies.

Abstract:Riverine nitrogen pollution is ubiquitous and attracts considerable global attention. Nitrate is commonly the dominant total nitrogen (TN) constituent in surface and ground waters; thus, stable isotopes of nitrate (δ15N/δ18O-NO3-) are widely used to differentiate nitrate sources. However, δ15N/δ18O-NO3- approach fails to present a holistic perspective of nitrogen pollution for many coastal-plain river networks because diverse nitrogen species contribute to high TN loads. In this study, multiple isotopes, namely, δ15N/δ18O-NO3-, δ18O-H2O, δ15N-NH4+, δ15N-PN, and δ15Nbulk/δ18O/SP-N2O in the Wen-Rui Tang River, a typical coastal-plain river network of Eastern China, were investigated to identify transformation processes and sources of nitrogen. Then, a stable isotope analysis in R (SIAR) model-TN source apportionment method was developed to quantify the contributions of different nitrogen sources to riverine TN loads. Results showed that nitrogen pollution in the river network was serious with TN concentrations ranging from 1.71 to 8.09 mg/L (mean ± SD: 3.77 ± 1.39 mg/L). Ammonium, nitrate, and suspended particulate nitrogen were the most prominent nitrogen components during the study period, constituting 45.4 %, 28.9 %, and 19.9 % of TN, respectively. Multiple hydrochemical and isotopic analysis identified nitrification as the dominant N cycling process. Biological assimilation and denitrification were minor N cycling processes, whereas ammonia volatilization was deemed negligible. Isotopic evidence and SIAR modeling revealed municipal sewage was the dominant contributor to nitrogen pollution. Based on quantitative estimates from the SIAR model, nitrogen source contributions to the Wen-Rui Tang River watershed followed: municipal sewage (40.6 %) ≈ soil nitrogen (39.5 %) > nitrogen fertilizer (9.7 %) > atmospheric deposition (2.8 %) during wet season; and municipal sewage (59.1 %) > soil nitrogen (30.4 %) > nitrogen fertilizer (4.1 %) > atmospheric deposition (1.0 %) during dry season. This study provides a deeper understanding of nitrogen dynamics in eutrophic coastal-plain river networks, which informs strategies for efficient control and remediation of riverine nitrogen pollution.
