Abstract:The efficient simultaneous activation of cyclohexenones or simple alkyl acyclic enones and 2-hydroxynitrostyrenes was realized by using a prolinol thioether catalyst. Thus, a highly chemo-, diastereo- and enantioselective synthesis of functionalized tetrahydroxanthenones and chromanes with up to three contiguous stereocenters was developed.

Abstract:An enantioselective one-pot Michael/Michael/Henry/hemiacetalization reaction between alpha,beta-unsaturated aldehydes, alpha-ketoamides, and nitroalkenes under mild conditions catalyzed by a diarylprolinol silyl ether has been developed. The sequential methodology provides a direct approach to a wide range of fully substituted chiral oxabicyclo[2.2.2]octanes with seven contiguous stereocenters in moderate to excellent yields (up to 99%), high to excellent diastereoselectivities (up to >25:1 dr), and high to excellent enantioselectivities (up to 99% ee).

Abstract:A highly efficient organocatalyzed Michael addition of 2-oxindole-3-carboxylate esters to nitroolefins using a Cinchona alkaloid-thiourea and an achiral Bronsted acid as cooperative organocatalysts is reproted that affords significantly improved enantioselectivity and diastereoselectivity. It also provides an efficient approach to the synthesis of spirooxindole derivatives with high enantioselectivity.

Abstract:A tandem Michael addition-cyclization of nitroalkenes with 1,3-dicarbonyl compounds was developed using phase transfer catalyst (PTC), allowing for the synthesis of polysubstituted-[4,5]-dihydrofuran in high yields. A wide range of substrates were demonstrated by this one-step process. Meanwhile, nitro group was substituted to form corresponding nitrite ion detected in the aqueous phase providing a reasonable pathway for denitrating poisonous and explosive nitro-containing compounds. The proposed mechanism was also supported by our DFT calculations.

Abstract:An efficient aminocatalytic enantioselective Michael addition of readily available cyclic hemiacetals to nitroolefins has been developed. The strategy serves as a powerful approach to synthetically valuable chiral 3-substituted tetrahydrofurans (THFs) and tetrahydropyrans (THPs). The synthetic utilities of the versatile Michael adducts also have been demonstrated in the synthesis of 2,3-disubstituted cyclic ethers, α-substituted lactones and venlafaxine analogues.

Abstract:A new series of mono-N-sulfonamides of C2-symmetrical 2′-bipyrrolidine have been designed, synthesized, and successfully applied as the organocatalysts to the enantio- and diastereoselective Michael addition of 4H-thiopyran-4-one to a variety of nitroolefins. Catalyst 10 was identified in the examinations to exhibit more superior catalytic ability than the traditional chiral pyrrolidine catalysts, giving high chemical yields, excellent diastereo- and enantioselectivities (up to 99:1 dr and 98% ee). The tert-butyl sulfonamide functionality of catalyst 10 is speculated to play crucial roles in the transition state as both bulky group and hydrogen-bond acceptor. Application of a representative Michael adduct has been also studied and proven to be useful for the diversity-oriented synthesis of enantiopure multiring heterocycles through a unique common bicyclic nitrone intermediate.

Abstract:A recyclable and reusable (S) diphenylpyrrolinol silyl ether I organocatalyst bearing a n-C8F17 fluorous tag has been demonstrated for promoting the asymmetric Michael addition reactions of a wide range of aldehydes with both aryl and alkyl-substituted nitroolefins and excellent levels of enantio- and diastereoselectivities are achieved. The catalyst I can be conveniently recovered by fluorous solid-phase extraction and subsequently reused (up to eight cycles) without significant loss of its catalytic activity and stereoselectivity for the process.

Abstract:The first asymmetric Michael addition of 3-substituted phthalides to nitroolefins promoted by amino acid-incorporating multifunctional catalysts has been developed. The reported method led to the synthesis of 3,3-disubstituted phthalide derivatives in high yields, and in a highly diastereoselective and enantioselective manner. Abstract:A highly enantioselective Michael addition of nitroacetates to β,γ‐unsaturated α‐ketoesters was developed by using chiral copper catalysts. The Michael addition products can be obtained in high yields with up to 99 % ee . With these densely functionalized products, the chiral cyclic nitrones, which are important synthetic intermediates, can be obtained in one step.

Abstract:The current work reports an organocatalytic strategy for the asymmetric catalysis of chiral benzofuran-2(3H)-ones bearing 3-position all-carbon quaternary stereocenters. Accordingly, highly enantioselective Michael addition reactions of 3-substituted benzofuran-2(3H)-ones to nitroolefins have been developed by utilizing a bifunctional tertiary-amine thiourea catalyst. The reactions accommodate a number of nitroolefins and 3-substituted benzofuran-2(3H)-ones to give the desired chiral benzofuran-2(3H)-one products with moderate to excellent yields (up to 98%) and moderate to very good selectivities (up to 19 : 1 dr and up to 91% ee). Theoretical calculations using the DFT method on the origin of the stereoselectivity were conducted. The effect of the nitroolefin substituent position on the stereoselectivity of the Michael addition reaction was also theoretically rationalized.
