Abstract:The defects and the mechanism of thermoluminescence (TL) have been systematically studied for X-irradiated cerium, samarium, europium and terbium doped BaFCl crystals. The experimental results reveal that the origin of glow peaks are as follows: Vk-centre (at 122 and 166 K), some shallow electron trap defects (194, 215, 254 and 344 K), F(Cl) centre (384 K) and F(F) centre (412 K). The TL spectra show the characteristic emissions of the dopant rare earths. On the basis of this study and the X-ray-induced valence changes as previously reported by us, we were able to formulate a consistent model of the TL process for these crystals.
Influence of doped cerium on photostimulated luminescence properties of BaFBr: Eu 2+

Abstract:The X-ray storage phosphor BaFBr: Eu 2+, Ce 3+ was synthesized in a one-step procedure. The photo-luminescence (PL) and photostimualted luminescence (PSL) after X-ray irradiation of BaFBr: Eu 2+, Ce 3+ were studied, according to its PL and PSL spectra. The introduction of Ce ion into BaFBr: Eu 2+ made PL and PSL intensity of BaFBr: Eu 2+, Ce 3+ efficiently enhance, and the optimal concentration of Ce ion was about 0.7%. Besides, with the introduction of Ce, the corresponding electron traps with shallow energy level were formed. This made it possible to used inexpensive and convenient semiconductor light-emitting diodes (LED) instead of gas lasers for photostimulation.

Abstract:Oxide glass ceramics with different concentrations of BaFCl:Eu(2+) doping have been prepared. Photoluminescence (PL) and photostimulated luminescence (PSL) after x-ray irradiation were observed at room temperature. The PSL was attributed to the characteristic emission of Eu(2+) in crystallites of BaFCl, which formed in the glass. Increasing the concentration of BaFCl:Eu(2+) causes an increase in PSL conversion efficiency, but a decrease in transparency. The trade-off between optical transparency and PSL intensity over different concentrations of BaFCl for X-ray imaging plate applications was briefly discussed.

Abstract:Near infrared to visible up-conversion luminescence in Er3+ single doped BaCl2, BaF2 and NaYF4 phosphors were compared. Intense blue emission at 410 nm due to H-2(9/2) -> I-4(15/2) transition and greenish-blue emission at 496 nm due to F-4(7/2) -> I-4(15/2) transition were only observed in BaCl2:Er3+ when excited by 808 nm and 976 nm laser diodes, respectively. The phenomena can be ascribed to the direct two-step excitation processes which occur in the chlorides where multiphonon relaxation is rapidly suppressed. In addition, the intensity of upconversion emission in BaCl2:Er3+ is greatly enhanced upon broadband near-infrared excitation. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:In this paper, we reported a series of halosilicate photoluminescence (PL) materials, which have the chemical composition Ba5SiO4(FxCl6-x):0.05Eu(2+) (x = 0, 1, 3, 4, 6). It is found that, under 365-nm UV light, Ba5SiO4Cl6:Eu2+ phosphor exhibits strong blue light with peak wavelength at 442 nm. By adding small amount of F- to the host lattice for the substitution of Cl-, the emission wavelength of the Ba5SiO4(F, Cl)(6):Eu2+ phosphor changes to 503 nm, corresponding to the green light. The possible luminescence mechanism in this phosphor system was also discussed. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:The Ce3+ and Tb3+ co-doped glasses and glass ceramics containing SrF2 nanocrystals were prepared by melt-quenching and subsequent heat treating and their luminescence properties were described. The formation of SrF2 nanocrystals in glass ceramics was confirmed by X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. The XRD patterns and photoluminescence spectra revealed that the Ce3+ ions and Tb3+ ions have been incorporated into SrF2 nanocrystals. The decay time of excited states has been used to reveal the energy transfer mechanism between Ce3+ and Tb3+. The emission intensity of Tb3+ ions in the glass ceramics was much stronger than that in the precursor glass, which could be ascribed to the more efficient energy transfer from Ce3+ to Tb3+ in the glass ceramics due to the enrichment of Ce3+ and Tb3+ ions and the shortening of the distance between Ce3+ and Tb3+ ions in the precipitated SrF2 nanocrystals. The glasses and glass ceramics could emit bright green light by adjusting concentration ratio of Ce3+ to Tb3+ and heat treatment temperature.
Crystallization-Induced Emission Enhancement of A Simple Tolane-Based Mesogenic Luminogen

Abstract:The photophysical properties of a diphenylacetylene derivative (FOEB) were investigated. The fluorescence quantum efficiency (Phi(F), %) of FOEB changes from moderate (49%) to low (9%) and to evidently enhanced (60%) in dilute solution, amorphous solid, and crystal state, respectively. This is a typical phenomenon of crystallization-induced emission enhancement (CIEE). The diphenylacetylene luminogen can be viewed as a propeller-like molecule with two blades (phenyl groups). In solution, the intramolecular rotations of the two blades around the ethynyl unit are activated and partially dissipate the energy in the photoexcited state, thereby leading to emission quenching. Consequently, FOEB exhibits moderate Phi(F) in solution. In amorphous solid, the intramolecular rotations are restricted, and a higher Phi(F) could be expected. But in fact, the strong pi-pi interactions between the luminogens cause heavier emission quenching, and the Phi(F) of the molecular aggregates is as low as 9%. In the single crystal, as the crystallographic data revealed, the two phenyl groups in the same diphenylacetylene unit are highly coplanar and the conjugation planes of the adjacent diphenylacetylene units are orthogonal to each other. Such molecular conformation and chromophore packing eliminate the intermolecular pi-pi interaction thereby greatly reducing the pi-pi interaction that caused fluorescence quenching, and meanwhile, the orthogonal packing allows the formation of C-H center dot center dot center dot pi. bonding between the adjacent phenyl groups to lock the intramolecular rotations and retain fluorescence. As a result, the FOEB single crystal shows evidently enhanced emission. Besides the CIEE property, FOEB demonstrates good liquid crystal property due to the diphenylacetylene mesogen and solvatochromic and mechnochromic effects due to the modification of diphenylacetylene with introduction of electron donor and acceptor functionalities.

Abstract:The up-conversion luminescence and near infrared luminescence of the Er3+ in transparent oxyfluoride glass-ceramics have been investigated. The formation of PbF2 nano-crystals in the glass was confirmed by XRD. From optical absorption spectra, the oscillator strengths for several transitions of the Er3+ in the glass and glass-ceramic have been obtained and then the Judd–Ofelt parameters were calculated by a least squares fitting. The split near infrared emission peaks of the Er3+ ions in the glass-ceramics can be observed because the Er3+ ions have entered into crystalline environment of the β-PbF2 nano-crystals. The up-conversion luminescence intensity of the Er3+ in the glass-ceramics can be observed to be much stronger than that in the glasses. The dependence of the up-conversion luminescence intensity on the current of the LD laser used as excited source indicated that the transition mechanism of the up-conversion luminescence can be ascribed to two-photon absorption process.

Abstract:The inclusion of Tb3+ ions doped into the storage phosphor BaFBr:Eu2+ results in increased purity of the host material as well as an improvement in the linearity of the photostimulated luminescence (PSL) intensity versus the x-ray irradiation dose. Films produced by pulsed laser deposition (PLD) also show similar results, indicating that PLD is a powerful technique for producing high quality, high purity thin films. As a result, the PSL dose response is more linear in the thin films than in the powder samples. The emission intensity of Eu2+ in the phosphors increases with the increasing time of x-ray irradiation while the emission intensity of Tb3+ remains almost constant. This result may be explained by considering the reduction of impurity Eu3+ ions following trapping of the photoexcited electrons. The results demonstrate that these materials are not only potentially useful for medical imaging but also show promise for use in radiation dosimetry.

Abstract:Inorganic scintillation crystals have been widely used in applications of high-energy physics, nuclear medical imaging, industrial nondestructive inspection, etc. In this work, a single crystal Ba3Y(PO4)3 (BYP) with 1.0 at% Ce3+-doping concentration was first grown by the Czochralski method, and the electronic structure was calculated using first principles based on density functional theory. In addition, a series of Ce3+-doped BYP phosphors were synthesized, and the fluorescence emission under UV excitation was measured through low-temperature spectroscopy, containing double-peaked emission from 5d–4f transition and self-trapped exciton recombination. A comparison of the UV and X-ray-excited fluorescence spectra reveals the existence of oxygen vacancies as well as F+ centers in the crystal. The air annealing of the crystal effectively reduces the thermoluminescence defects but reduces the emission intensity under UV or X-ray excitation. The BYP:Ce crystal shows a fast decay lifetime of 15.5 ns, and the fast component is as short as 8 ns. The results show that the Ce3+-doped BYP crystal has potential as a kind of scintillator with fast decay properties.

Abstract:The luminescences of Ce3+ in borate,borosilicate,phosphate and germanate glasses containing La2O3,BaO, Ta2O5,Nb2O5 were measured by ultraviolet-visible excitation with an aim of identifying the effect of hosts on the spectroscopic properties of Ce3+ in these glasses. Meanwhile, the scintillating luminescence of some of these berate glasses were determined by X-ray radiation in order to understand the possibility of berate glass as Ce3+-doped dense glass scintillator.

Abstract:Pulse-shape discrimination (PSD) is usually achieved using the different fast and slow decay components of inorganic scintillators, such as BaF2, CsI:Tl, etc. However, LaBr3:Ce is considered to not possess different components at room temperature, but has been proved to have the capability of discriminating gamma and alpha events using fast digitizers. In this paper, ionization-density-dependent transport and rate equations are used to quantitatively model the competing processes in a particle track. With one parameter set, the model reproduces the nonproportionality response of electrons or alpha particles, and explains the measured alpha and gamma pulse-shape difference well. In particular, the nonlinear quenching of excited dopant ions, Ce3+, is confirmed herein to mainly contribute observable ionization alpha and gamma pulse-shape differences. Further study of the luminescence quenching can also help to better understand the fundamental physics of non-linear quenching and thus improve the crystal engineering. Moreover, based on the mechanism of dopant quenching, the ionization-density-dependent pulse-shape differences in other fast single-decay-component inorganic scintillators, such as lutetium yttrium oxyorthosilicate, Lu2(1-x)Y2xSiO5:Ce (LYSO) and CeBr3, are also predicted and verified with experiments.

Abstract:The luminescence properties of Ce3+ ions in calcium halophosphates Ca5(PO4)3X (X=F, Cl) has been studied. The excitation bands of Ca5−2xCexNax(PO4)3Cl are shifted to lower energies comparing with Ca5−2xCexNax(PO4)3F. Codoping with Na+ ions results in a remarkably increase of the luminescence intensity of Ce3+-doped Ca5(PO4)3X apatites due to the charge compensation.

Abstract:The transmittance spectrum along c axis of the BaF2:PbWO4 crystal expressed the higher transmittance than that of pure PbWO4 crystal. The luminescence intensity of the peak at 400~450 nm in X-ray excited luminescence spectrum of the BaF2:PbWO4 crystal was increased significantly, about 2 times higher than that of pure PbWO4.

Abstract:Spectral and kinetic properties of extrinsic crossluminescence (CL) in SrF2:Ba (1%) and CaF2:Ba (1%) are compared with those of intrinsic CL in BaF2 and are analyzed taking into account EXAFS data obtained at the Ba LIII edge and results of first-principles calculations. The CL decay time was revealed to be longer in SrF2:Ba and CaF2:Ba compared to BaF2. This fact contradicts the expected acceleration of luminescence decay which could result from an increased overlap of wave functions in solid solutions due to shortening of the Ba-F distance obtained in both EXAFS measurements and first-principles calculations. This discrepancy is explained by the effect of migration and subsequent non-radiative decay of the Ba (5p) core holes in BaF2 and by decreasing of the probability of optical transitions between Ba (5p) states and the valence band in SrF2:Ba and CaF2:Ba predicted by first-principles calculations.

Abstract:A novel BaLu2Al2Ga2SiO12:Ce3+ persistent phosphor was designed and synthesized through hetero-valence substituting Ba2+-Si4+ ion pair for Lu3+-Al3+ one in the Lu3Al3Ga2O12. XRD and Rietveld refinement results confirm the garnet typed crystal structure. SEM information shows that the constituent elements are uniformly distributed on the irregular particles. Under 360 or 430 nm excitation, the samples exhibit broad emission bands peaking at 510 nm. The luminescence intensity reaches to the maximum at 6 mol% Ce3+ doping content, and an internal quantum efficiency of 51.2% is achieved. The concentration quenching between Ce3+ ions is mainly originated from exchange interaction. Moreover, the phosphors exhibit bright cyan afterglow for minutes after removing the blue-light excitation source. The persistent luminescence decay process is studied by thermoluminescence spectra. The persistent luminescence mechanism and optical information writing and reading process are also discussed to explore the application in optical information storage.

Abstract:Near-infrared to visible upconversion luminescence was observed in a multicomponent silicate (BK7) glass containing Ce3+ ions under focused infrared femtosecond laser irradiation. The emission spectra show that the upconversion luminescence comes from the 4f-5d transition of the Ce3+ ions. The relationship between the intensity of the Ce3+ emission and the pump power reveals that a three-photon absorption predominates in the conversion process from the near-infrared into the blue luminescence. The analysis of the upconversion mechanism suggests that the upconversion luminescence may come from a three-photon simultaneous absorption that leads to a population of the 5d level in which the characteristic luminescence occurs.
