Abstract:Highlights ► Single-component device has number of advantages compared with the conventional three-component device. ► Better catalyst functions for both H 2 and O 2 which can realize good device performance. ► Faster kinetic processes because of removal of anode/electrolyte and electrolyte/cathode two interfaces. ► Better device performances, higher power outputs more than 700 mW cm -2 achieved at 550 o C. ► Faster electrochemical response processes. Abstract Single-component and three-component fuel cell devices have been studied using mixed ionic and electronic conductor. The three-component fuel cell means a conventional fuel cell which is the configuration consists of anode, electrolyte and cathode; while the single-component fuel cell uses only one component that can function as the electrodes and electrolyte simultaneously. The single-component fuel cell showed the same or even better performance compared to conventional three-component fuel cell. A maximum power density of 700 mW cm −2 has been achieved by the single-component fuel cell at 550 °C. Keywords Single-component fuel cell Three-component fuel cell Samaria doped ceria Nano-composite 1 Introduction Recently we have developed a single-component fuel cell (FC) using only one component which can function as the electrodes and electrolyte simultaneously [1] . In this work, a significant improvement of this novelty device performance is achieved by developing new functional nanocomposite materials. These works are based on innovative solid oxide fuel cells working in intermediate and low temperature (300–700 °C) [2–5] , especially, the new fuel cell research strategy of NANOCOFC (Nanocomposites for advanced fuel cell technology) [6] explored and developed for low temperature solid oxide fuel cells (LTSOFCs) [7–13] . This nanocomposite approach was designed and fabricated by utilizing the two-phase interfaces as express paths for ionic conduction as well as functions for compatible nanocomposite electrodes [14,15] . In previous studies, some metal oxides, e.g. LiNiO 2 , LiNiCuO x , LaNi 0.2 Fe 0.65 Cu 0.15 O 3 LiNiZnFeO x etc., exhibited good catalytic activity as both anode and cathode materials. Symmetrical configuration of LTSOFCs devices with these metal oxides electrode have achieved excellent performances combined with the ceria-composite electrolytes [16] . These innovative researches and developments make it possible to use a single component to realize the fuel cell function. The single-component is only one homogenous mixture layer with the ionic and electronic conducting materials. In this work, we further report a new functional composite material possessing both electronic and ionic conductivities with significant improvement of the single-component device performances from 450 mW cm −2 to 700 mW cm −2 at 550 °C. The studies were also carried out compared with conventional three-component fuel cells. 2 Experimental The material for single-component FC was prepared based on two types of materials: one was the ionic conductor and the other one was electronic conductor. In this work, Ce 0.8 Sm 0.2 O 2− δ (SDC)–Na 2 CO 3 (NSDC) nanocomposite was used as ionic conductor and the LiNiCuZnFe-composite metal oxides was used as electronic conductor. The NSDC was prepared by one-step co-precipitation process [16] . Stoichiometric amounts of Ce(NO 3 ) 3 ·6H 2 O (99%, Sigma–Aldrich, USA) and Sm(NO 3 ) 3 ·6H 2 O (99.9%, Sigma–Aldrich, USA) were mixed and dissolved in de-ionic water to form a 0.5 M solution. The solution was stirred at 80 °C for 0.5 h. Then Na 2 CO 3 (99.0%, Sigma–Aldrich, USA) solution (0.5 M) used as a precipitation agent, was added into the solution with a molar ratio of (Ce 3+ + Sm 3+ ): CO 3 2− = 1:2 under vigorous stirring to form a white precipitation. The precipitate was then filtrated and dried in an oven at 120 °C for 8–10 h. Finally, the NSDC precursor was sintered in a furnace at 800 °C for 4 h. The resulting material was ground completely to obtain homogenous NSDC nanocomposite powders. In parallel, a mixed solution of LiOH (≥98%, Sigma–Aldrich, USA), Ni(NO 3 ) 2 ·6H 2 O (≥98.5%, Sigma–Aldrich, USA), Cu(NO 3 ) 2 ·3H 2 O (99–104%, Sigma–Aldrich, USA), Zn(NO 3 ) 2 ·6H 2 O (98%, Sigma–Aldrich, USA), and Fe(NO 3 ) 3 ·9H 2 O (99.0%, Merck, Germany) were prepared in a molar ratio of Li:Ni:Cu:Zn:Fe = 0.15:0.25:0.1:0.2:0.3. Then appropriate amount of the NSDC powder was added into the LiNiCuZnFe-nitrate solution. The mixture suspension was stirred and dried at 80 °C in air. Then the precursor was calcined at 700 °C in air for 2 h and cooled to room temperature to form LiNiCuZnFeO x –NSDC composites. The crystal structure of as-prepared composite material was identified by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) with a Philips X’pert pro super diffractometer using Cu Kα radiation ( λ = 1.5418 Å). The microstructure of sample was investigated by a Zeiss Ultra 55 field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM). Two types of fuel cell devices were fabricated. Type I: conventional three-component device made of anode, electrolyte and cathode; Type II: single-component device using only on layer of LiNiCuZnFeO x –NSDC mixture. The schematic diagram of these two types of cells was shown in Fig. 1 . For type I cells, the as-prepared LiNiCuZnFeO x –NSDC sample was used as for both anode and cathode catalysts, and NSDC was used as the electrolyte. The anode, electrolyte and cathode were uniaxially pressed to form a sandwich structure within a die under 250 MPa. The resulting cell size is 13 mm in diameter and 0.1 cm in thickness consisting of 0.05 cm for anode, 0.02 cm for electrolyte and 0.03 cm for cathode, respectively. For type II cell, the LiNiCuZnFeO x –NSDC sample was pressed as tablet with 13 mm in diameter under 250 MPa. Same thickness of 0.1 cm was also maintained. For these cells, silver paste was applied on one surface of pellet and the nickel-foam was used on the other surface as the current collectors. The fuel cell with an active area of 0.64 cm 2 was tested from 450 to 580 °C, where hydrogen and air were used as fuel and oxidant, respectively. The gas flow rates were controlled in the range of 80–120 ml min −1 at 1 atm pressure. 3 Results and discussion The XRD pattern of as-prepared LiNiCuZnFeO x –NSDC material is shown in Fig. 2 a . It can be seen that the material is mainly consists of individual oxides. One major phase of the material is SDC. It was attributed that NSDC had only CeO 2 diffraction peaks since the NSDC was a core–shell structure with an amorphous Na 2 CO 3 shell [12] . Besides, NiO, LiFeO 2 , CuO and ZnO can be identified. It is obvious that the synthesized material is a mixture of all these oxides in a composite way between the ionic and electronic metal oxide conductors. It should be noted that metal oxides, e.g. NiO, CuO, ZnO, and LiFeO 2 are actually semiconductors. For example, NiO is p-type conductor and the doping with other metal can make its conductivity increases significantly [17,18] . ZnO is a typical electronic conductor [19] , when doped with Li + it can achieve significant p-type conductivity [19,20] . Besides, NSDC is also common to possess of dual H + and O 2− conduction while situated in H 2 containing atmosphere, e.g. in a fuel cell environment [21] . Therefore, as prepared LiNiCuZnFeO x –NSDC material can satisfy the basic requirements of electrode materials for SOFCs and may be used as both anode and cathode materials in the conventional three-component fuel cell devices. It should be noticed that the prepared LiNiCuZnFeO x –NSDC has the same properties as an electrode material used in conventional three-component fuel cell in which the electrodes, anode and cathode, are always prepared in a mixture of the electronic (catalyst material) and ionic (electrolyte material) conductors in a composite type. Directly one-step preparation of the LiNiCuZnFeO x –NSDC composite with a wet-chemical process may obtain a better homogeneity as shown in Fig. 2 b. It can be seen that all particles of the as-prepared sample are distributed in a very homogenous configuration, which might further improve the electrode performance by enlarging the triple phase boundary and taking advantages of Ni, Cu, Fe catalytic activities. Fig. 3 a shows I – V and I – P characteristics for the single-component devices using the LiNiCuZnFeO x –NSDC composite simultaneously as electrodes and electrolyte. In comparison, the performances for conventional three-component fuel cell device are also included. Fig. 3 b shows further corresponding I – V and I – P characteristics for the single-component device operated at various temperatures. The three-component fuel cell exhibits a maximum power density of near 700 mW cm −2 at 550 °C. It demonstrated that the prepared LiNiCuZnFeO x –NSDC composite can function as both anode and the cathode simultaneously. The result indicates that the LiNiCuZnFeO x has also excellent catalytic activity towards hydrogen oxidation reaction (HOR) and oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). Compared to the conventional three-component fuel cell, even slightly better performance of more than 700 mW cm −2 has been achieved by the single-component device at 550 °C. Fig. 4 a displays the relationship of open circuit voltage (OCV) against gas suppliers. It can be seen that device OCVs show fast responses from positive ca 1.0 V to negative 1.0 V as soon as exchange H 2 and air supplies. The single-component device exhibits faster response process (less than 15 s) to reverse the OCV set up compared with that of the three-component device (more than 40 s). These results further demonstrate that, (i) the as-prepared LiNiCuZnFeO x –NSDC material exhibits good catalytic activity towards HOR and ORR; and (ii) the single-component device has a faster kinetic process than that of the three-component device. It might be attributed to the removing of two interfaces of anode/electrolyte and electrolyte/cathode in the single component device. In addition, the interfaces between electrolyte and electrodes contributed to major polarization losses, which delayed the kinetic responses [22] . Further studies on the Ag and Ni-foam roles were performed. The results showed that Ag and Ni-foam have some catalytic function to cell voltage, but contribute negligible current outputs to the device. In this case, if both Ag and Ni-foam act for same function as the current collect, then it is reasonable that the showed data as completely symmetric when switching the two electrodes to be either anode or cathode. On the other hand, since Fig. 4 a shows that the cell responds in an OCV case without loading, the reaction can take place very fast at the surface of the catalyst. For comparison, we further operated the devices under discharging with a constant loading for 2.5 h as shown in Fig. 4 b. Both devices exhibit very stable device performances, i.e. constant current outputs. But the single-component device exhibits a much smaller polarization loss and a shorter process to reach the constant discharging plateau. In this case, the interfaces can be gradually optimized during the discharging with current passing through. Especially while the H + conductivity can be introduced during the current passing through the device in FC environment since the extrinsic nature of the H + and NSDC electrolyte [23,24] . Thus ionic conductivity increasing with time to reach a certain stable value, polarization loss will be also decreased being along with the ohmic resistance reducing in the same time. As consequence, the current density is improved as the time increase to reach a steady stable plateau, which is very common in our previous three component fuel cells. In addition, the period of such increasing time is mainly affected by the cell fabrication techniques when the same materials used. It is interesting to note that the single-component device does not display short circuit at all and even achieves better performance compared to the three-component device. Since the single-component device can perform the same function as fuel cell and convert the chemical energy of H 2 to electricity continuously, the following reactions are proposed:at anode, (1) H 2 → 2H + + 2e − at cathode, (2) 1 2 O 2 + 2 e − → O 2 − overall reactions, (3a) H 2 + 1 2 O 2 → 2 H + + O 2 − (3b) 2H + + O 2− → H 2 O Eqs. (3a) and (3b) can be further written as: (4) H 2 + 1 2 O 2 → H 2 O Compared to conventional solid oxide fuel cells, the following fuel cell reactions:at anode, (5) H 2 + O 2− → H 2 O + 2e − at cathode, (6) 1 2 O 2 + 2 e − → O 2 − overall reaction, (7) H 2 + 1 2 O 2 → H 2 O Both types devices show the same overall reactions, but in the single-component device it takes two steps to realize the overall reaction, i.e. Eq. (3a) : H 2 and O 2 are catalyzed, respectively at H 2 and O 2 (air) contacting side into corresponding ions, H + and O 2− , then Eq. (3b) further subjects combination between H + and O 2− to form the water and to generate electricity in the same time. During this process, the H 2 contacting side acts as a “functional” anode to release electrons by forming H + , and the air (O 2 ) contacting side as a “functional” cathode to receive electrons. The fuel cell reaction is completed immediately as long as H + and O 2− appear in close proximity anywhere in the material. There is an essentially different from the conventional fuel cell, where a pure ionic conducting electrolyte and process are key to realize the fuel cell functions; While in the single-component fuel cell, only one component of a mixture of ion and electron (n and p) conducting materials is used. In this case, there is no electrolyte separator, thus no macro-level bulk electrolyte process. At this stage, detailed mechanisms for the single-component device are not yet clear, but the comparison study shows the same functions and comparable device performances between the conventional three-component and the single-component devices. It has been observed that the porosity plays an important role to determine the performances of single component. We have determined porosity for the single component after pressing with and without heat-treatments. The heat-treatment at 600 °C for 0.5 h was performed. In both cases the resulting components showed close porosity values of 30.94 ± 0.088% and 29.35 ± 0.068%, respectively. Also the components exhibited good mechanical strength. We have not yet made efforts for careful control of the porosity in the first aim for demonstration of such single-component devices. We are making efforts by adding some organic binders and different sintering temperatures, also making single component devices with porosity gradient to form porous surfaces but dense in the center part. With these efforts we may control the porosity for finally produced single components and optimize the device performances. It request more carefully works to be reported later. The single-component devices open a radical new fuel cell research field and new science which is very much worthy for continued R&D and will become a new research strategy in fuel cell R&D. More works have to be done to investigate the detailed mechanism and science of the single-component fuel cell. 4 Conclusions In this study, comparison studies have been made on the electrochemical performances of the function for single-component and three-component fuel cell devices. It is demonstrated that a single-component device without the electrolyte but only the LiNiCuZnFeO x –NSDC single component which can function as the electrodes and electrolyte simultaneously. The single-component device also realizes the fuel cell functions, i.e. conversion of H 2 and O 2 (via H + and O 2− ) to generate electricity without the conventional electrolyte process. There are a number of advantages for the single-component device compared with the conventional three-component device: (i) better catalyst functions for both H 2 and O 2 which can realize good device performance; (ii) faster kinetic processes because of removal of anode/electrolyte and electrolyte/cathode two interfaces; (iii) better device performances, higher power outputs more than 700 mW cm −2 achieved at 550 °C; and (iv) faster electrochemical response processes. From the preliminary results, we anticipate that a new fuel cell science and technology will be developed with significant importance for both fundamental and applied research. Abstract:As a candidate of cathode material of single-chamber solid oxide fuel cell (SC-SOFC), cobalt-free mixed ionic electronic conductor (MIEC) Nd0.5Sr0.5Fe0.8Cu0.2O3-delta (NSFCu) is synthesized by sol-gel method with ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid and citric acid as co-complexing agents. The XRD shows NSFCu is stable after CO2 treatment and chemical compatible with SDC at high temperatures. CO2-TPD (CO2-temperature programmed desorption) demonstrates both CO2 adsorption and desorption phenomenon on NSFCu surface. However, the polarization resistances (R-p) of NSFCu and SDC (10:4 in weight) composite electrodes showed no decay in 5% CO2. Single cell using N-2-O-2-CH4 mixed gas (CH4 to O-2 ratio = 1.5) as fuel shows maximum power density of 635 mW cm(-2) at 700 degrees C. These results suggest that NSFCu-SDC is a promising composite cathode material for application in single-chamber solid oxide fuel cell. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:The research activities on single-component fuel cells (SCFCs) have opened new doors for keeping ahead with two major areas of focus: improvement of SCFC performances by contributing new materials, and scientific understanding of the SCFC nature and operation mode. The present work reports the exploitation of new material composed of the Gd doped ceria-KAlZn-oxide (GDC-KAZ) and the LiNiCuZn-oxide (LNCZ), combining ionic and semiconducting properties for SCFCs. A new method is first used through an internal electron-hole redox cycle resulting in no net electrons to avoid ceria electronic conduction problems thus to develop an excellent GDC-KAZ electrolyte. Its ionic conductivity, 0.08 S cm(-1) at 600 degrees C, is ten times higher than that of GDC. The SCFC using the GDC-KAZ-LNCZ materials exhibits a remarkable electrochemical performance of 628 mW cm(-2) at 580 degrees C, significantly higher than that of conventional three-component (anode/electrolyte/cathode) fuel cells. The results bring about a new cost-effective and robust system with significant scientific and economic consequences for the fuel cell field.

Abstract:A ceria-based composite electrolyte with the composition of Ce0.8Sm0.2O1.9 (SDC)–30wt.% (2Li2CO3:1Na2CO3) is developed for intermediate temperature fuel cells (ITFCs). Two kinds of SDC powders are used to prepare the composite electrolytes, which are synthesized by oxalate coprecipitation process and glycine–nitrate process, respectively, and denoted as SDC(OCP) and SDC(GNP). Based on each composite electrolyte, two single cells with the electrolyte thickness of 0.3 and 0.5mm are fabricated by dry-pressing technique, using nickel oxide as anode and lithiated nickel oxide as cathode, respectively. With H2 as fuel and air as oxidant, all the four cells exhibit excellent performances at 400–600°C, which can be attributed to the highly ionic conducting electrolyte and the compatible electrodes. The cell performance is influenced by the SDC morphology and the electrolyte thickness. More interestingly, such composite electrolytes are found to be proton conductors at intermediate temperature range for the first time since almost all water is observed at the cathode side during fuel cell operation for all cases. The unusual transport property, excellent cell performance and potential low cost make this kind of composite material a good candidate electrolyte for future cost-effective ITFCs.

Abstract:A high-performance solid oxide fuel cell La1-xSrxMnO3 (LSM) cathode/metallic interconnect contact material Ni1-xCoxO, added with the mixed ionic-electronic conducting Sm0.2Ce0.8O2-delta (SDC), was proposed as a novel composite cathode for proton-conducting solid oxide fuel cells (H-SOFCs) with BaZr0.1Ce0.7Y0.1Yb0.1O3-delta (BZCYYb) as the electrolyte. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) results indicated that the maximum doped ratio of Ni1-xCoxO was Ni0.7Co0.3O (NC3O), also shown that NC3O was chemically compatible with SDC at temperatures up to 1400 degrees C. The TEC of NC3O was also measured to check its thermal compatibility with other components. Laboratory-sized tri-layer cells of NiO-BZCYYb/BZCYYb/NC3O-SDC were fabricated and tested with humidified hydrogen (similar to 3% H2O) as fuel and static air as oxidant, respectively. A maximum power density of 204 mW cm(-2) and a low interfacial polarization resistance Rp of 0.683 Omega cm(2) were achieved at 700 degrees C. The results have indicated that the NC3O-SDC composite is a simple, stable and cost-effective cathode material for H-SOFCs. Copyright (C) 2011, Hydrogen Energy Publications, LLC. Abstract:A cobalt-free Ba0.5Sr0.5Fe0.9Ni0.1O3-delta-Sm0.2Ce0.8O1.9 (BSFN-SDC) composite was employed as a cathode for proton-conducting solid oxide fuel cells (H-SOFCs) using BaZr0.1Ce0.7Y0.2O3-delta (BZCY) as the electrolyte. The chemical compatibility between BSFN and SDC was evaluated. The XRD results showed that BSFN was chemically compatible with SDC after co-fired at 1100 degrees C for 5 h. The thermal expansion coefficient (TEC) of BSFN-SDC, which showed a reasonably reduced value (16.08 x 10(-6) K-1), was effectively decreased due to Ce0.8Sm0.2O1.9 (SDC) added. A single cell of Ni-BZCY/Ni-BZCY/BZCY/ BSFN-SDC with a 25-mu m-thick BZCY electrolyte membrane exhibited excellent power densities as high as 361.8 mW cm(-2) at 700 degrees C with a low polarization resistance of 0.174 Omega cm(2). The excellent performance implied that the cobalt-free BSFN-SDC composite was a promising alternative cathode for H-SOFCs. Copyright (C) 2012, Hydrogen Energy Publications, LLC. Abstract:In solid oxide fuel cell, the redox reactions (HOR and ORR) demand good catalyst functions at the anode and cathode. Triple phase boundary (TPB) is an important mechanism to determine HOR and ORR as key factors to improve the reaction rate, charge transfer and ion diffusion processes. In the present work, Ni0.4Zn0.6Fe2O4 (Ni–Zn ferrite) and its heterostructures with Sm0.2Ce0.8O2 (SDC) are prepared and characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to analyze the phase structure and morphology of the material. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) confirms the phase of Ni–Zn ferrite nanoparticles (NPs) and chemical states on the heterostructure surface. The electrical and conductive behaviors of synthesized samples are investigated through electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and fuel cell measurements. Unlike to conventional way, the as-prepared samples promote redox reactions from two aspects: a) as an electrolyte for ion transport; b) as a mixed conductor to extend the ionic transport on TPB region. The ionic transfer mechanism of Ni–Zn ferrite/SDC composite leads the improved fuel cell performance up to 760 mW/cm2 at 550 °C. Further investigations verify the appreciable proton conduction in the prepared devices in a range of 0.012–0.048 Scm−1.

Abstract:Doping of Nickel can regulates the composition of the composite cathode with heterojunction structure to reach a balance of triple conductivity which is crucial for catalytically activity of cathode materials. Based on the regulated cathode, an outstanding electrochemical performance of 1.04 W cm−2 at 600 °C is achieved which may be one of the highest performance for cobalt‐free cathodes. Proton‐conducting solid oxide fuel cells (H‐SOFCs) have the potential to be a promising technology for energy conversion and storage. To achieve high chemical compatibility and catalytic activity, nickel‐doped barium ferrate with triple conducting ability is developed as cathodes for H‐SOFCs, presenting an impressive electrochemical performance at intermediate temperatures. The cell performance with the optimized BaCe0.26Ni0.1Fe0.64O3–δ (BCNF10) composite cathode reaches an outstanding performance of 1.04 W cm−2 at 600 °C. The high electrocatalytic capacity of the nickel‐doped barium ferrate cathode can be attributed to its significant proton conductivity which is confirmed through hydrogen permeation experiments. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations are further conducted to reveal that the presence of nickel can enhance processes of hydration formation and proton migration, leading to improve proton conductivity and electro‐catalytic activity.

Abstract:Here we report that the nano La0.6Ca0.4Fe0.8Ni0.2O3-delta (LCFN) decorated Sm0.2Ce0.8O1.9 (SDC) composite oxide, prepared by the solution infiltration method, could function well as a cobalt-free electrode material for "symmetrical" solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs). The structure, morphology, thermal expansion, oxygen reduction reaction activity and catalytic activity for methane oxidation of the as-prepared LCFN-infiltrated SDC electrode was investigated systematically. Under a reducing atmosphere, the partial segregation of metallic nickel from the LCFN perovskite lattice was demonstrated by SEM and STEM-EDX, and the XRD results suggested that the perovskite structure of LCFN still survived. Consequently, the good anode performance was expected due to the high catalytic activity of LCFN for methane oxidation and the excellent electrocatalytic activity of nano nickel for the methane reforming and electro-oxidation of hydrogen. In an air atmosphere, an area specific resistance as low as 0.12 Omega cm(2) was achieved at 600 degrees C. The SDC electrolyte supported "symmetrical" SOFC with the LCFN-infiltrated SDC electrode was then fabricated and tested, which delivered attractive peak power densities of 510 and 350 mW cm(-2) at 800 degrees C, operating on hydrogen and CH4-O-2 fuels, respectively.

Abstract:Abstract In this paper, the composite cathode material of of LaNi0.6Fe0.4O3-δ(LNF) and Sm0.5Sr0.5CoO3-δ(SSC) is investigated and the cell performance of BaCe0.7Y0.2Zr0.1O3-δ(BZCY)-based proton-conducting solid oxide fuel cell (H-SOFC) is evaluated. LNF powders and SSC powders with different ratios (1:0, 7:3, 5:5, 3:7, 0:1 wt. %) are mixed as the composite cathode to explore the optimized composition. The phase structure of the fabricated cathode powders is analyzed through X-ray diffraction method (XRD) and no second phase was observed below 1000oC, showing good chemical compatibility. The electrochemical properties consisted of I-V and EIS curves reveal that the single cell with LNF-SSC73 cathode has the best electrochemical performance, exhibiting a polarization resistance of 0.10 Ω·cm2 and a relatively high maximum power density of 636 mWcm2 at 700oC. These results above indicate that LNF-SSC73 composite material could improve the performance of fuel cells, which would be a prospective material in the field of H-SOFC.

Abstract:A graded anode-supported solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) with the structure porous Ni-yttria stabilized zirconia (Ni-YSZ)vertical bar microporous Ni-YSZ vertical bar YSZ vertical bar La0.8Sr0.2MnO3 (LSM) was fabricated by a trilayer co-pressing-sintering method, and coating with an LSM cathode. Cu-CeO2 was impregnated into the porous Ni-YSZ layer using nitrate/glycol precursors to act as an anti-carbon catalyst to fabricate a graded Cu-CeO2-NiO-YSZ composite anode. The current-voltage (I-V), current-power (I-P), and long-term stability of the SOFC were tested using CH4 or H-2 as fuels and air as an oxidant. The results show that the co-pressing-sintering layers possess a gradient pore structure with defect-free combination. The power density of SOFC supported by a graded Ni-YSZ anode is 284 mW.cm(-2), operated at 850 degrees C using H-2 as a fuel, but decreases to 143 mW.cm(-2) when the fuel is changed to CH4. In contrast, the cell supported by a Cu-CeO2-Ni-YSZ anode show the reverse behavior, increasing from 176 to 196 mW.cm(-2) when the fuel is changed from H-2 to CH4 at 850 degrees C. Under a 250 mA.cm(-2) load using CH4 as the fuel, the output of the cell with a graded Ni-YSZ anode fluctuats and the cell is blocked after 10 h. At this point, carbon particles or fibers are observed in the anode layer by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Conversely, the cell with a Cu-CeO2-Ni-YSZ anode shows stable power output for 50 h or longer, and no carbon deposition was observed inside the anode.

Abstract:A fuel cell device is realized by using a single component of lithium nickel oxide and gadolinium doped ceria (LiNiO2-GDC) composite material, a mixture of electronic and ionic conductors, when nickel foam and silver paste are attached to each surface of the single component pellet as current collectors. This simple fuel cell construction with only one component showed the same or even better performances compared to conventional three-component MEA (membrane electrolyte assembly) fuel cell using GDC as electrolyte. The maximum power density of 450mW/cm2 has been achieved at 550°C for the single component fuel cell.

Abstract:NiO/Ce0.8Sm0.2O1.9 (NiO/SDC, 65wt.% NiO) composite powders were synthesized by a glycine-nitrate process (GNP) to fabricate Ni/SDC anode-supported solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC). The results show that the composite powders are composed of single cubic phases of NiO and SDC and have a particle size in nanometer range. NiO/SDC ceramics were prepared from the NiO/SDC powders and were converted into Ni/SDC cermets by reduction in H2, which were employed as anode materials for SOFC with SDC electrolyte. It is shown that Ni/SDC cermets from the NiO/SDC composite powders by the GNP have porous and homogeneous microstructures and show good electrical conductivity. A single SOFC based on Ni/SDC anode with about 50µm SDC electrolyte film and about 80µm La0.6Sr0.4Co0.2Fe0.8O3-δ (LSCF) cathode was constructed. Open circuit voltage (OCV) of the cell is about 0.8V and maximum power density is 361.42 and 394.78 mWcm-2 at 750 and 800°C, respectively.

Abstract:An ideal solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) cathode should meet multiple requirements, i.e., high activity for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), good conductivity, favorable stability, and sound thermo-mechanical/chemical compatibility with electrolyte, while it is very challenging to achieve all these requirements based on a single-phase material. Herein, a cost-effective multi-phase nanocomposite, facilely synthesized through smart self-assembly at high temperature, is developed as a near-ideal cathode of intermediate-temperature SOFCs, showing high ORR activity (an area-specific resistance of ≈0.028 Ω cm2 and a power output of 1208 mW cm-2 at 650 °C), affordable conductivity (21.5 S cm-1 at 650 °C), favorable stability (560 h operation in single cell), excellent chemical compatibility with Sm0.2 Ce0.8 O1.9 electrolyte, and reduced thermal expansion coefficient (≈16.8 × 10-6 K-1 ). Such a nanocomposite (Sr0.9 Ce0.1 Fe0.8 Ni0.2 O3- δ ) is composed of a single perovskite main phase (77.2 wt%), a Ruddlesden-Popper (RP) second phase (13.3 wt%), and surface-decorated NiO (5.8 wt%) and CeO2 (3.7 wt%) minor phases. The RP phase promotes the oxygen bulk diffusion while NiO and CeO2 nanoparticles facilitate the oxygen surface process and O2- migration from the surface to the main phase, respectively. The strong interaction between four phases in nanodomain creates a synergistic effect, leading to the superior ORR activity.

Abstract:Nanocrystalline Ce0.8Sm0.2O1.9 (SDC) has been synthesized by a combined EDTA–citrate complexing sol–gel process for low temperature solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) based on composite electrolyte. A range of techniques including X-ray diffraction (XRD), and electron microscopy (SEM and TEM) have been employed to characterize the SDC and the composite electrolyte. The influence of pH values and citric acid-to-metal ions ratios (C/M) on lattice constant, crystallite size and conductivity has been investigated. Composite electrolyte consisting of SDC derived from different synthesis conditions and binary carbonates (Li2CO3–Na2CO3) has been prepared and conduction mechanism is discussed. Water was observed on both anode and cathode side during the fuel cell operation, indicating the composite electrolyte is co-ionic conductor possessing H+ and O2− conduction. The variation of composite electrolyte conductivity and fuel cell power output with different synthesis conditions was in accordance with that of the SDC originated from different precursors, demonstrating O2− conduction is predominant in the conduction process. A maximum power density of 817mWcm−2 at 600 °C and 605mWcm−2 at 500 °C was achieved for fuel cell based on composite electrolyte.

Abstract:A novel La2NiO4+delta-La3Ni2O7-delta-Ce0.55La0.45O2-delta (L2N1-L3N2-LDC) ternary composite with a weight ratio of 0.3:2.5:2.2 was prepared by a one-step co-synthesis method and employed as cathode material for intermediate temperature solid oxide fuel cells (IT-SOFCs). X-ray diffraction (XRD) profiles confirmed the successful synthesis of the composite consisted of L2N1, L3N2 and LDC phases, without any other impurity. Compared with the cathode prepared by the physical mixing method, the co-synthesized composite cathode possessed a porous microstructure with the smaller particle size and more uniform distribution of various elements. The ternary composite cathode on Sm0.2Ce0.8O1.9 (SDC) electrolyte revealed improved electrochemical performance, achieving the polarization resistance value of 0.06 0 cm(2) at 800 degrees C in stationary air. Electrochemical impedance spectra under various oxygen partial pressures indicated the charge transfer process was the rate limiting step for oxygen reduction reaction. Furthermore, a SDC electrolyte (about 350 gm) supported single cell with L2N1-L3N2-LDC as cathode and Ni-SDC as anode demonstrated a maximum power density of 253 mW cm(-2) at 800 degrees C. These results confirmed that L2N1-L3N2-LDC ternary composite prepared by co-synthesized method is a very promising cathode material for IT-SOFCs. (C) 2017 Hydrogen Energy Publications LLC. Abstract:NiO–SDC(Ce0.8Sm0.2O1.9) composites were synthesized using gel-casting technique with nitrate precursors. The composite oxides were formed after the gels were fired at 350°C in flowing air. No reaction between NiO and CeO2 occurs as analyzed using X-ray diffraction (XRD). The average particle size was about 50nm and specific surface area was 10m2g−1, when the powder was fired at 900°C for 2h. NiO–SDC cermets were prepared by firing the composites at 1350°C. The electrical conductivities and porosities of the cermets were measured, for example, 360Scm−1 at 600°C for a cermet with 30% porosity, 35vol.% Ni, and 35vol.% SDC. And the electrochemical performance of Ni–SDC cermet as an anode was investigated using a fuel cell with 25-μm thick SDC electrolyte and Sm0.5Sr0.5CoO3-SDC cathode. Maximum power density was 618mWcm−2 and 491mWcm−2 at 650 and 600°C, respectively, inferring high catalytic activity of the Ni–SDC anode. Impedance measurements on the fuel cell at open circuit showed that the interfacial polarization resistance of the Ni–SDC anode was negligible compared to the resistance of cathode and electrolyte.

Abstract:In this research, nanofiber-structured Pr0.4Sr0.6Co0.2Fe0.7Nb0.1O3-δ (PSCFN) electrode scaffolds were impregnated with Gd0.2Ce0.8O1.9 (GDC) nanoparticles to prepare PSCFN-GDC nanofiber-structured composite electrodes, which could function well as a novel electrode material for symmetrical solid oxide fuel cells (SSOFCs). The polarization resistances of PSCFN-GDC (1:0.56) composite electrodes as cathode and anode were 0.044 and 0.309Ωcm2 at 800°C, respectively, indicating that the composite electrodes demonstrated excellent electrochemical performances for both oxygen reductions and fuel oxidation reactions. La0.8Sr0.2Ga0.8Mg0.2O3-δ (LSGM) electrolyte-supported single cells with the PSCFN-GDC symmetrical composite electrodes showed excellent long-term stability in wet H2 (97% H2-3% H2O) and wet CH4 (97% CH4-3% H2O) for 100h with constant current density at 800°C. A conversion electrode method was applied by interchanging the atmosphere of cathode and anode to solve the problem of PSCFN-GDC symmetrical single cell's carbon deposition in wet CH4. After working three cycles for 384h, carbon deposition was not found in the symmetrical electrode scaffold. Taken together, the results described above demonstrated that the PSCFN-GDC composite material acted as a promising symmetrical electrode for SSOFCs, and the conversion electrode method would make for a good application to process carbon deposition generated by hydrocarbon fuels.

Abstract:Oxygen-ion and proton-conducting electrolytes should be combined into a composite to improve fuel cell capacity and electrocatalytic efficiency. To realize a single membrane of a composite electrolyte with dual charge carriers, we use only a single process. A BaZr 0.8 Ni 0.01 Y 0.19 O 3 (BZNY) proton-conducting electrolyte solution and suspension are infiltrated into a porous oxygen-ion-conducting electrolyte (La 0.75 Sr 0.2 Ba 0.05 ) 0.175 Ce 0.825 O 1.891 (LSBC) substrate using a simple pumping process. The infiltration of BZNY into the porous LSBC results in a gradient composition of BZNY. The obtained single-composite electrolyte, BZNY-LSBC, possesses individual perovskite and fluorite crystal structures after sintering. The BZNY solution infiltrates the porous LSBC substrate to a smaller depth than the phase-preformed nano-BZNY slurry. The effective infiltration depth is approximately 50 μm for the BZNY solution, and 300 μm for the nano-BZNY into a 400 μm thickness of LSBC. The infiltrated composite electrolyte exhibites lower conductivity compared to the solid-state-prepared single-phase LSBC electrolyte at 600 °C, but almost the same conductivity at 800 °C from the AC impedance analyses. When the Sr 2 Fe 1.5 Mo 0.5 O 6 (SFM) are applied as symmetric electrodes, the SFM|BZNY-LSBC|SFM fuel cells maintain the higher open circuit voltage of 0.8 V than 0.5 V for SFM|LSBC|SFM fuel cells at 600 °C. The fuel cell with nano-BZNY infiltrated composite electrolyte achieves over double power density than cells with single LSBC and solution BZNY infiltration electrolytes at 600 °C that may be due to the proton conduction enhancement at lower temperature and further promotes the triple power density at 800 °C contributed from the oxygen ions conduction of LSBC and BZNY at high temperature. Those results provide evidence that dual ions pass through individual conduction paths in a two-phase composite electrolyte.

Abstract:Ceria based electrolyte materials have shown potential application in low temperature solid oxide fuel cells (LT-SOFCs). In this paper, Sm3+ and Nd3+ co-doped CeO2 (SNDC) and pure CeO2 are synthesized via glycine-nitrate process (GNP) and the electro-chemical properties of the nanocrystalline structure electrolyte are investigated using complementary techniques. The result shows that Sm3+ and Nd3+ have been successfully doped into CeO2 lattice, and has the same cubic fluorite structure before, and after, doping. Sm3+ and Nd3+ co-doped causes the lattice distortion of CeO2 and generates more oxygen vacancies, which results in high ionic conductivity. The fuel cells with the nanocrystalline structure SNDC and CeO2 electrolytes have exhibited excellent electrochemical performances. At 450, 500 and 550 °C, the fuel cell for SNDC can achieve an extraordinary peak power densities of 406.25, 634.38, and 1070.31 mW·cm−2, which is, on average, about 1.26 times higher than those (309.38, 562.50 and 804.69 mW·cm−2) for pure CeO2 electrolyte. The outstanding performance of SNDC cell is closely related to the high ionic conductivity of SNDC electrolyte. Moreover, the encouraging findings suggest that the SNDC can be as potential candidate in LT-SOFCs application.
