Abstract:American-born writers of Chinese descent rejected Chinese culture in the 1970s,but they returned to their ancestral culture after the 1980s. This paper attempts to explore the reasons behind this often-noted,but seldom-discussed,cultural turn in Chinese American literature. The Chinese American demographic changes in the 20th century and the rise of multiculturalism in the late half of 20th century are analyzed to determine the sociohistorical forces behind this drastic change in cultural orientations. Frank Chin’s literary career is brought in as a case in point to demonstrate that idiosyncratic and aesthetic imperatives may play a decisive role in such cultural turn. It is argued that this change in cultural orientations is historically conditioned and aesthetically needed for Chinese American writers.

Abstract:The Chinese books out of China are what the current academic research focuses on.Views of the academic are variant on how to define their connotation and extension.Based on the previous researches,the author proposes the concept of "Chinese books of non-Chinese written or published." This article is divided into the following five parts: "Chinese documents written by foreigners published overseas," "Chinese documents written by foreigners published in China," "Chinese documents written by Chinese published overseas," "Chinese ancient books lost overseas," and "books compiled with Chinese and foreign languages." Thus this article discusses Chinese books of non-Chinese written or published and further their documentation systems and values and significances.

Abstract:The researches have thrived since 2000 and many books and articles of excellent quality have been published during the first decade of 21 century.The system and the basic conception of publishing history have been improved largely.Chinese professional circle has issued many good books with great importance,such as the books about general publishing history,dynastic publishing history and publishing chorography;the modern publishing history has been a hotspot of researching;scholars work over the study of the publishing history deeply and try to use theories and methodologies of other subjects;many articles and monographs have been done around the culture history of publishing;the western reading history brings some new ideas to Chinese scholars,and a lot of researches have been made about developments in the foreign countries;the publishing history of People's Republic of China has been achieving much attention from 2008.In the future,a new perspective from the world civilization history will help people have a better understanding of the Chinese publishing history.

Abstract:Macroscopically,the contemporary Chinese literary system is a cultural one dominated by Chinese political system.Since 1949 up to the present,the vicissitudes of contemporary literature over the past 60 years has given rise to a clear-cut demarcation of different literary systems with a ten-year period(1975-1984) as its watershed.With respect to the 100 years of new Chinese literature,the sixty years' literature of PRC also is an inseparable unity: regardless of the previous thirty years or the later,they all belong to the same literary system mode under the Chinese literature of PRC."Cultural Revolution" has played an important role in the formation of contemporary literature.Literary injuries done by the "Cultural Revolution" and their aesthetic restoration are the main events of the development of cotemporary literary trend.Through a readjustment of the foothold of history,aesthetics and humanity,contemporary Chinese literature has been integrated with literature of Taiwanese,of Hongkong,and of Macao,and overseas Chinese literature once more.

Abstract:Historical novels of different periods reflect the real social demands of different periods. Since the foundation of the PRC, writers' creation concepts and concept of history have constantly changed along with the influence of all kinds of thoughts of the traditional and modern cultures from China and the West. The creation of historical novels in different periods of contemporary China appears a variety of different specific forms, such as the revolutionary historical novel, the new historical novel, the cultural historical novel, and different creative methods and aesthetics. This paper reviews and analyzes these kinds of historical novel forms, and we can see the creation development of contemporary novels under the influence of different cultures.

Abstract:In retrospect of foreign literature studies in China from 1949 to 2019, we have to acknowledge two fundamental facts. Firstly, although in the initial 30 years of this period foreign literature studies in China largely followed the Soviet model, neglecting Western literary and cultural traditions to some extent—with over a decade under the influence of extreme “leftist” trends—it was during this time that the groundwork for the academic framework of foreign literature studies was painstakingly laid. Secondly, with the influx of Western ideas, foreign literature studies during the subsequent 40 years underwent a complete paradigm shift, providing the spiritual nourishment for and playing a pioneering role in liberating thought and rectifying disorders. However, this period saw a conspicuous adoption of Western paradigms in foreign literature studies, thereby somewhat abandoning certain valuable traditions and academic stances that ought to have been upheld. Meanwhile, foreign literature studies in this period also experienced an undiscriminating acceptance and hasty integration of ideas, leading to a mixture of the good and the bad. This essay provides an important overview of 70 years of foreign literature studies in China, though the specific situations are much more complex. In recent years, as the ideas of cultural confidence and a community of shared future for mankind deeply resonate with the public, the principles of serving the Chinese people and Chinese socialist cause are increasingly becoming significant recognitions within China’s foreign literature scholarly community.

Abstract:Abstract Thousands of Chinese outside China have been writing in Chinese and other languages since the past century. Some wrote merely to record their personal experiences. Others wrote to express their thoughts and feelings. We are beginning to have some idea of the aspirations and limitations of these writers and their struggles to define their place in their respective communities and countries, and in the larger world of literature. Each writer is a Self with regard to his or her immediate migrant community. As a member of the community, the writer is likely to have a different Self in relation to other ethnic groups in the adopted country, especially toward the dominant majority that has the political power to define national identity for all minorities. An additional Other would be the images of China. Also, some submit themselves to the test of globalization. Their condition can be better understood through the old Chinese dichotomy of nei and wai, with many dimensions of what is within and what is without. This dichotomy of within-without allows us to recognize the dilemmas of overseas Chinese writers as subjective and dynamic phenomena.

Abstract:The history of modern Chinese literature study falls into three periods.The first period is the New Literature study period,when New Literature was included in university curriculum,An Expanded Family of Chinese New Literature was published,and numerous talented critics emerged. The second period is devoted to Modern Literature study;in this period,literature study was bound by the state ideology,but the writing of the history of modern Chinese literature and the studies of Luxun promoted the research in this field.In the third period,the concept of the 20 th Century Chinese Literature offered a new perspective of modern literature study, which promoted the study significantly.In the first 15 years of the 21 st century,the questions and the views of literary creation remain the same as those of last century,which means the 20 th century literature as a concept is still exerting an influence on the new century literature.

Abstract:The history of the reception of American literature in China may well be one of the most exemplary instances of the contingent and context-bound quality of literary judgment, particularly when it involves cross-cultural negotiations of value and significance. A cursory glance at any research library's catalog in China would suggest Chinese perception of American literature is possibly the most amply documented literary sensibility in today's Chinese scholarship on foreign literature. Abstract:In recent decade,the research on overseas Chinese classics has become a new trend in the international sinology.There are profound internal and external reasons to this trend,and the formation of the trend is realized by newly- found materials which call for a new theoretical proposition and a new method of thinking. The"novelty"about the trend shows in the close-reading of new materials and the reflection of academic position of sinology,and these practices may be expected to initiate a new departure for the Chinese scholarship in the 21th century. In brief,the research paradigm will shift from"the Western dame"to"the Eastern daughter. "This paper focuses on the relationship between the Chinese literature and East Asian civilizations,and proposes five areas of research which may benefit from overseas classical texts in Chinese language. Abstract:In the reform era,American literature has got unprecedented attention in China.The very first literary history of a foreign country published after the "Cultural Revolution" was A Short History of American Literature(Volume I) which appeared in 1978.Since then we have seen the publication of many different histories of American literature.This paper starts with a review of the first edition of A Short History of American Literature(Volume I) to see its strong points and limitations.Then it discusses the changes in the revised edition of 1986 and the new edition in 2003.Chang Yao-xin's History of American Literature(Volume I) demonstrates his own unique understanding and interpretation of American literature.The paper ends with a survey of the four-volume New History of American Literature,showing its remarkable achievements in bringing together new materials and providing a comprehensive history of American literature.
