Abstract:Although there was a pre-historical period of semiotic and narrative studies of Chinese characteristics, there is no doubt that both semiotics and narratology are disciplines or interdisciplinary sub-branches of learning that were ‘borrowed’ from the West immediately after China’s opening to the outside world and economic reform. Modern semiotics was introduced in China along with the translation of such Western theorists as Saussure, Piaget, Lotman, Eco, Kristeva, Lacan, Derrida, and Barthes. And narratology in its structural sense was introduced into the Chinese context along with the translation of such theorists as Todorov, Genette, Propp, Bakhtin, Greimas, and Halliday. In literary and cultural studies, including film studies and translation studies, Chinese scholars seem to combine the two approaches into narrative studies, which is also a subdiscipline or research area of increasing interest in the Western academia. The present special issue will focus on narrative studies from a semiotic perspective in an attempt to inform international academic circles that, through the creative and dynamic applications by Chinese scholars, they have also produced some Chinese studies that could not only promote dialogue with our Western counterparts but also complement semiotics and various narrative theories in the West. The narrative studies explored in this issue remain a part of a developing field chiefly under the disciplines of literary, art criticism, and history studies. In the field of literary studies, scholars tend to use the term xushuxue or xushixue (narratology), which is characterized by a sort of textcentered tendency of structuralist features. In the other fields of art criticism and history studies, scholars or critics instead use the broad and more inclusive term xushi lilun (narrative theory) or simply xushi (narrative). In this respect, we find that it coincides to some extent with what has been going on in Western academia in the past few years. At first, narratology was chiefly adopted by literary scholars of linguistic background as a research approach to individual literary texts from a structural linguistic perspective.
