Abstract:This paper systematically investigates the influences of polarization states on laser-induced domain nucleation in z-cut LiNbO3 crystals. The real-time 2D and 3D phase distributions at the focus during laser-induced domain nucleation were reconstructed by digital holography. The different LiNbO3 samples, including undoped congruent LiNbO3, Mg-doped congruent LiNbO3, Hf-doped congruent LiNbO3, and stoichiometric LiNbO3, were tested. The systematical comparisons of phase mapping and nucleation fields with different polarization states, including linear polarization, circular polarization, and elliptical polarization, have been carried out. The polarization states proved to be a key influence factor for the laser-induced domain nucleation. It was demonstrated that the generated bulk photovoltaic field along the -z direction was an important mechanism for laser-induced preferential domain nucleation. This work is of great significance for the future development of ferroelectric domain engineering of LiNbO3 crystals.

Abstract:Abstract Domain engineering plays a pivotal role in the development of ferroelectric non-volatile memory devices. In this work, we mainly focus on the domain kinetic in ion-sliced single crystal LiNbO 3 thin films under tip-induced electric fields using piezoresponse force microscope (PFM). Polarization reversal takes place when the electric fields are above threshold value (coercive voltage V c ) of films. Besides, the dependence of domain dynamic on pulse duration and amplitude were investigated in detail, and specific local domain reversal (5 μ m) was completed by the optimized poling condition. All the results reveal that tip-induced polarization reversal could be an effective way to domain engineering, which gives much more promising prospects regarding to the high density non-volatile ferroelectric memory devices.

Abstract:( 5 at. % ) cobalt-doped LiNbO3 (Co:LN) films were prepared by combinatorial laser molecular-beam epitaxy on Si (100). The Co:LN films with Co2+ replacing Nb exhibit room temperature ferromagnetism of 1.2μB∕Co and Curie temperature of ∼540K. Through a Ag∕Co:LN∕Si metal-ferroelectric-semiconductor field effect transistor configuration, ferroelectric measurements show that the films display hysteresis loops at 300K and ferroelectric transition temperature of ∼610K. The hysteresis and the asymmetry in capacitance-voltage and leakage-voltage curves are ascribed to trapping/detrapping process of charges at the Co:LN/Si interface. The coexistence of room temperature ferromagnetism and ferroelectricity makes Co:LN a promising single-phase multiferroic.
Scanning Probe Microscopy Study of the Domain Growth in Relaxor Ferroelectrics

Abstract:The aim of this paper was to study the domain growth of typical relaxer ferroelectric ceramics 0.9Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O-3-0.1PbTiO(3). The topographic and elecric force images of samples were observed by Scanning Probe Microscopy taping mode and lift mode respectively. The results demonstrate that the nano scale polar regions can switch to sub-micro domains under different de voltages on the tip. Such process is carried out by 180 degrees domain switching of micro dipoles along < 111 > axis in crystal under extra field.

Abstract:A low electrical field applied during pulsed laser deposition of ferroelectric thin films or multilayers has a significant influence on the texture of the ferroelectric films and layers, leading to an oriented growth with the poling direction of the films parallel to the applied electrical field. Highly (001) oriented LiNbO3 films have been prepared in a bias electrical field less than 10V/cm on different kinds of substrates. With the help of this method a series of (001) LiNbO3 / amorphous Al2O3 multilayers with modulation period of several nm to several hundred nm were prepared sucessfully. In these "acoustic superlattices" the piezoelectric coefficient modulation has been achieved and the acoustic resonances up to 9.8 GHz were demonstrated. The impact of the low electrical field on the orientation of the ferroelectric films prepared by pulsed laser deposition has been analysed based on the theory of heterogeneous nucleation of ferroelectrics under the influence of the applied electric field.

Abstract:The optical superlattice structure derived from a periodic poling process endows ferroelectric crystals with tunable optical property regulation, which has become one of the most efficient strategies for fabricating high-efficiency optical devices. Achieving a precise superlattice structure has been the main barrier for preparation of specific optical applications due to the unclear dynamics of domain structure regulation. Herein, a real-time monitoring system for the in situ observation of periodic poling of lithium niobate is established to investigate ferroelectric domain reversal dynamics. The formation of reversed domain nuclei, growth, and expansion of the domain are monitored, which is highly related to domain growth dynamics. The nucleation and growth of domain are discussed combined with the monition of domain reversal and the variation of local electric field distribution along with finite element analysis. An electrode configuration with multiholes is proposed to use the local electric field more efficiently and controllably, which could achieve a higher domain nucleus density with high uniformity. Two-mm-thick periodically poled LiNbO3 crystals with high quality are achieved. A nonlinear light conversion from 1064.2 to 3402.4 nm is realized by the single-resonance optical parameter oscillator with a nonlinear optical efficiency up to 26.2%.

Abstract:The nominal composition of Pb0.9 3 La0.07 (Zr0.5 2 ,Ti0.48 )O 3 ferroelectric ceramics with the average grain size of 1-2 μm in tetragonal structure was prepared through a conventional solid-state synthesis route.The in-si-tu XRD measurements under the applications of different DC electric fields were carried out by employing a self-made electric loading device and a commercial X-ray diffractometer.The percentages of 90° domain switching were calculated through the analyses in relative peak intensities of (002)and (200),and compared with those obtained by ex-situ measurements.The behaviors of electric induced domain switching before and after the ap-plications of electric fields were preliminary investigated.It was found that a domains as high as 7% would re-orient right after the moment by unloading electric field.

Abstract:Revealing the evolution of domain morphology and crystal structure during and after applying an electric field is essential to understand the physics of morphotropic phase boundary (MPB) in ferroelectric solid solutions. Here, electric-field-induced domain switching and phase transition in lead-free 0.95Na(0.5)Bi(0.5)TiO(3)-0.05BaTiO(3) (NBT-BT) single crystals were directly observed using in situ transmission electron microscopy. Rhombohedral (R) and tetragonal (T) phases coexisted in two regions, i.e., the ferroelectric region with {001}(C) and {011}(C) nanodomains and the relaxor region with polar nanoregions. In situ observations show that the applied electric fields induced a reversible 90 & DEG; domain switching in the ferroelectric region and an incomplete reversible relaxor-to-ferroelectric transition in the relaxor region. A reversible T-R phase transition was also evidenced by the [130](C) electron diffraction patterns. The electric-field-induced domain switching and phase transition in both regions contributed significantly to the enhanced macroscopic properties. These findings provide deep insights into the dynamic structural evolution of NBT-based materials near MPB and help to understand the microstructural mechanism of the macroscopic piezoelectric behaviors.

Abstract:The LiNbO3 crystal was polarized and characterized by the piezoresponse force mode of scanning probe microscope. By using the Kolmogorov-Avrami-Ishibashi [Izv. Akad. Nauk, USSR: Ser. Math. 3, 355 (1937); J. Chem. Phys. 8, 212 (1940); J. Phys. Soc. Jpn. 63, 1031 (1994); 63, 1601 (1994)] theory to analyze the relaxation process after domain switching, it was found that (1) the percent of final switched domains after poling increased with the enhancing poling voltage, (2) the nucleation time was a constant to a certain sample, (3) the dimension of domain growth decreased with the enhancing poling voltage, and (4) the relaxation time had a maximum at a medial voltage. The corresponding mechanism for domain switching was discussed, which is hopefully useful for domain engineering. (c) 2006 American Institute of Physics.

Abstract:The growth facets and ferroelectric domains in the stoichiometric LiNbO3 crystals grown by flux (K2O) pulling method were studied in this present work. Through the chemical etching method, the morphology of ferroelectric domains was investigated; it was observed that the crystal consisted of two main domains with a boundary along the growth axis when it was grown along the X〈112̄0〉 direction. According to the result of X-ray orientation experiments, the growth facets were determined to be (011̄2) faces, which to generate many small and spindly opposite domain areas along the direction of three ridges 〈01̄10〉. On the other hand, three large and symmetric opposite domain areas were found to appear along the direction of three ridges 〈01̄10〉; these opposite domain areas are named as “regional single domain”. Both the domain inversion fields and the dislocation density would decrease greatly when the Li/Nb ratio in crystal was increased. It is anticipated that the investigation of facets and ferroelectric domains will be useful to grow high-quality stoichiometric LiNbO3 crystals.

Abstract:In this work, Scanning Near Field Microscopy (SNOM) observation and characterization of quasi-periodic ferroelectric domains in rare earth doped LiNbO 3 , Nd doped Ba 2 NaNb 5 O 15 , and LiTaO 3 crystals are presented. The formation of ferroelectric domains has been induced either during the crystal growth procedure (LiNbO 3 and Ba 2 NaNb 5 O 15 ) or by applying pulsed electric field (LiTaO3). SNOM reflection, transmission and collection modes have been used indistinctly to characterize the ferroelectric domain structure. In the three crystals under study, an unexpected optical contrast associated to the presence of ferroelectric domains has been observed. In particular, working in the SNOM collection mode the optical contrasts reached a value closed to ∼ 80% in Ba 2 NaNb 5 O 15 and LiTaO 3 crystals. These high optical contrast values are explained considering that the ferroelectric domains pattern operates as a periodic array of planar waveguides (optical super-lattices). The invoked light-pipe mechanism has been assessed by beam propagation method (BPM) simulations of the light propagation through the structure, from which the refractive index modulations have been obtained. These values compare favorably with data obtained by light diffraction experiments under normal and Bragg incidence.

Abstract:Ferroelectric domain structure evolution induced by an external electric field was investigated by means of nematic liquid crystal (NLC) method in two strontium-barium niobate single crystals of nominal composition: Sr_{0.70}Ba_{0.30}Nb_{2}O_{6} (SBN:70 - relaxor) and Sr_{0.26}Ba_{0.74}Nb_{2}O_{6} (SBN:26 - ferroelectric). Our results provide evidence that the broad phase transition and frequency dispersion that are exhibited in SBN:70 crystal have a strong link to the configuration of ferroelectric microdomains. The large leakage current revealed in SBN:26 may compensate internal charges acting as pinning centers for domain walls, which gives rise to a less restricted domain growth similar to that observed in classical ferroelectrics. Microscale studies of a switching process in conjunction with electrical measurements allowed us to establish a relationship between local properties of the domain dynamics and macroscopic response i.e., polarization hysteresis loop and dielectric properties.

Abstract:Ferroelectric domain inversion and its effect on the stability of lithium niobate thin films on insulator (LNOI) are experimentally characterized. Two sets of specimens with different thicknesses varying from submicron to microns are selected. For micron thick samples (∼28 μm), domain structures are achieved by pulsed electric field poling with electrodes patterned via photolithography. No domain structure deterioration has been observed for a month as inspected using polarizing optical microscopy and etching. As for submicron (540 nm) films, large-area domain inversion is realized by scanning a biased conductive tip in a piezoelectric force microscope. A graphic processing method is taken to evaluate the domain retention. A domain life time of 25.0 h is obtained and possible mechanisms are discussed. Our study gives a direct reference for domain structure-related applications of LNOI, including guiding wave nonlinear frequency conversion, nonlinear wavefront tailoring, electro-optic modulation, and piezoelectric devices.

Accelerated Domain Switching Speed in Single-Crystal Linbo3 Thin Films

Abstract:By using ionic implantation and wafer bonding technologies, we peeled off a single-crystal LiNbO3 thin film in the atomic-layer smoothness from the surface of a bulk Z-cut LiNbO3 single crystal. X-ray diffraction patterns showed only (00l) orientation of the film. From positive-up-negative–down pulse characterization, we measured domain switching current transients under various short-pulse voltages, where we observed domain switching currents to occur separately at time after initial capacitor charging currents. This is similar to early observations in bulk ferroelectric single crystals, where apparent positive/negative coercive fields of domain switching determined from polarization-electric field hysteresis loops always equal maximum/minimum applied fields. However, after pulse stressing of the film for more than 1000 cycles, the domain switching speed is accelerated, where domain switching current overlaps with the initial capacitor charging current with a well-defined coercive field independent of the applied-field strength. Finally, we simulated the whole domain switching current transients with the assumption of the resistance degradation across interfacial passive layers between the film and electrodes.

Abstract:The rotational striations and power striations are studied in LiNbO crystals and one-to-one correspondence between the striations and temperature fluctuations is demonstrated. The ferroelectric domain structures related to the rotational striations and the power striations have been observed. The distribution of solute concentration in rotational striations is measured by means of energy dispersive X-ray analysis in the scanning electron microscope, and it has been concluded that the ferroelectric domain structures depend on the solute concentration gradient.

Abstract:We have presented a systematical study of the domain nucleation and growth behaviors in multiferroic BiFeO3 (BFO) films. Both the ferroelectric and the ferroelastic switching dynamics were investigated. Several environmental parameters, including the polarization orientations, the monodomain-like matrix, and the ordered domain walls as local boundaries, were well controlled by thin-film strain engineering through changing the vicinal angles of the substrates. The tip-based domain dynamics was studied by subsequent piezoresponse force microscope (PFM) imaging of the domain evolution under external voltage pulses. For the nanodomains written in the monodomain-like environment, the domain wall performed the thermal activated motion. The as-grown 71 degrees domain walls can act as pinning centers for the ferroelectric domain growth driven by low fields; moreover, ferroelastic nucleation near a 71 degrees domain wall will cause the deformation of the domain wall. The ferroelastic domain growth possessed relatively small activation fields, and therefore usually performed non-activated motion. This study revealed the effects of local environments on the dynamics forming nanoscale domains, and opened a pathway for applications in novel non-volatile functional devices.

Abstract:As one of the outstanding piezoelectric materials, relaxor-PbTiO3 single crystal also exhibits promising electro-optic and nonlinear-optic properties. Therefore, it is vital to understand the domain switching kinetics not only for optimizing strain-mediated devices performance but also for fabricating optical waveguides and periodic domain structures in optical applications. In this work, domain switching kinetics in annealed and pre-poled PMN-0.38PT single crystal under different external electric field were studied. Polarization reversal can be accomplished only by c-domain nucleation and growth in the annealed sample where the formation of the ferroelastic domains is hindered. In pre-poled sample, 90° domain switching happened by 90° domain wall reorientation under low electric field while 180° domain switching is accomplished by two-step 90° domain switching and c-domain growth under high electric field. The results are important for modulating domain structure for strain mediated and optical devices.
