Abstract:We present an analysis of the Navier-Stokes equations based on a spatial filtering technique to elucidate the multi-scale nature of fully developed turbulence. In particular, the advection of a band-pass-filtered small-scale contribution by larger scales is considered, and rigorous upper bounds are established for the various dynamically active scales. The analytical predictions are confirmed with direct numerical simulation data. The results are discussed with respect to the establishment of effective large-scale equations valid for turbulent flows.

Abstract:We present a novel simulation tool-constrained large eddy simulation (CLES), for numerical experiments on the wall-bounded turbulent flows. Different from the traditional large eddy simulation(LES) and the available hybrid RANS/LES approaches, the CLES method computes the whole flow domain by solving the LES equations with a Reynolds-stress-constrained (RSC) subgrid-scale (SGS) stress model in the near-wall region and a traditional SGS stress model in the rest.The CLES approach is validated by simulating the turbulent channel flow and flow around a circular cylinder. With the same grid resolutions, CLES can successfully simulate all these flow regimes as well as DES and other available methods. For the case of attached flows, CLES is able to eliminate the non-physical Log-Layer Mismatch problem in traditional hybrid RANS/LES methods successfully, and to predict mean velocity profile, turbulent stresses and skin friction coefficient more accurately compared with the DES. For the case of detached flows, the performance of CLES is comparable to DES.

Abstract:A new subgrid eddy diffusivity model is used for large eddy simulation of scalar turbulence. The new model is based on the modified Yaglom equation, i.e., the dynamical equation for the structure function of resolved-scale scalar fluctuations, by which the scalar transport between resolved grid scale and unresolved subgrid scale can be described exactly. The new model has been applied in the large eddy simulations of scalar transport in both decaying isotropic turbulence and fully developed turbulent channel flow. By the comparison with Smagorinsky model and the dynamical model, it is found that the new model can achieve similar accuracy as the dynamical model, and can reduce the computational cost about 20% in terms of CPU time relative to the dynamical model.

Abstract:Despite the intense effort expended towards obtaining a model for describing the turbulent flows of fluid, there is no model at hand that can do an adequate job. This leads us to look for a non-traditional approach to turbulence modeling. In this work we conjoin the notion of large eddy simulation with those of fuzzy sets and neural networks to describe a class of turbulent flows. In previous works we had discussed several issues concerning large eddy simulation such as filtering and averaging. Here, we discuss tile use of fuzzy sets to improve the filtering procedure.

Abstract:Turbulent 3-D channel flow simulations were performed with second-order finite difference codes.Explicit filtering was used to control truncation error.A second filtering was applied to the convective and turbulent stress terms,and a new separation of the turbulent stresses was proposed.The data with explicit filtering were compared with the results from the traditional large eddy simulation approach.The dynamic Smagorinsky model,the dynamic mixed model and the dynamic reconstruction model were also discussed.Our findings show that,for the two algorithms,the difference in the mean velocity profile is not large,however,the fluctuation velocities are improved for the explicit filtering case.On the other hand,increasing the reconstruction levels for the resolved subfilter-scale stress improves the mean velocity and the fluctuation velocities.

Abstract:Sediment transport in fully developed turbulent open channel flow has been investigated using large eddy simulation (LES) of the incompressible Navier–Stokes equations. The scalar transport equation of the sediments concentration, which is based on the continuous-phase approach, is adopted. The settling process is taken into account with a modified settling velocity appearing in the sediment concentration equation. A Smagorinsky model allowing for the interaction between the fluid flow and the suspended sediment is used to simulate the unresolved, subgrid scale terms. The LES results are compared with the experimental data, and good general agreement is achieved.

Abstract:Transcritical turbulent flows are governed by the compressible Navier–Stokes equations along with a real-gas equation of state. Their computation is strongly susceptible to numerical instabilities and requires kinetic-energy- and pressure-equilibrium-preserving schemes to yield stable and non-dissipative scale-resolving simulations. Building upon a recently developed kinetic-energy- and pressure-equilibrium-preserving discretization framework based on transporting a pressure equation, the objectives of this paper are to (i) derive a filtered set of equations suitable for large-eddy simulation, and (ii) characterize the properties of the resulting subfilter-scale terms by performing a priori analyses of transcritical wall-bounded turbulence direct numerical simulation data. The filtering operation leads to three unconventional subfilter-scale terms that emerge from the pressure equation and require dedicated modeling. The subfilter-scale stress tensor is dissected in terms of magnitude, shape and orientation based on an eigendecomposition analysis, and compared with existing subfilter-scale models. A priori analyses confirm that models of eddy-viscosity type are favourable for this framework, although the tensor shape is not fully captured. Closure expressions are finally proposed and tested for the novel subfilter terms, showing acceptable performances.

Abstract:A new subgrid eddy viscosity model is proposed for large eddy simulation of turbulent flows. The new model is based on the exact transportation equation between resolved and unresolved fluctuations. The subgrid eddy viscosity of new model is proportional to the skewness of longitudinal velocity increment, which measures the ratio of cascade energy to the dissipation. The new model is tested in isotropic turbulence and turbulent channel flow with satisfaction.

Abstract:By using the technique of turbulent large eddy simulation (LES) and finite element method (FEM) of computational fluid dynamics (CFD), the three dimensional flow fields in vector flow clean-room under empty state and static state condition were predicted. The partly expanded Taylor-Galerkin discretization scheme cooperated with implicit stream-upwind diffusion effect was used to deduce the finite element formulation of basic equations through Gauss filtering. The subgrid model of vortex viscosity was adopted in the numerical simulation. As the results of the calculation agree well with the available experimental data, the method of LES was proved to be more accurate to provide the size and location of large eddies in clean-rooms than the standard K - epsilon; two-equation model.

Abstract:By using large eddy simulation cooperated with the second order full extension ETG finite element method, turbulent energy loss analysis was carried out. Corresponding to different filter in LES, different formulas for computing the energy loss rate was obtained. The energy loss rate of the flow in the marine moisture separator was calculated. The results show that. LES is a promising method for turbulent energy loss analysis. Abundant information of the field of energy loss rate can be obtained, by using which the conformation of fluid machinery and transport passage can be adjusted adequately to decrease the energy loss.
Large-eddy simulation of large-scale structures in long channel flow

Abstract:We investigate statistics of large-scale structures from large-eddy simulation (LES) of turbulent channel flow at friction Reynolds numbers $Re_\tau = 2 {\rm k}$ and $200 {\rm k}$. To properly capture the behaviour of large-scale structures, the channel length is chosen to be 96 times the channel half-height. In agreement with experiments, these large-scale structures are found to give rise to an apparent amplitude modulation of the underlying small-scale fluctuations. This effect is explained in terms of the phase relationship between the large- and small-scale activity. The shape of the dominant large-scale structure is investigated by conditional averages based on the large-scale velocity, determined using a filter width equal to the channel half-height. The conditioned field demonstrates coherence on a scale of several times the filter width, and the small-scale--large-scale relative phase difference increases away from the wall, passing through $\pi/2$ in the overlap region of the mean velocity before approaching $\pi$ further from the wall. We also found that, near the wall, the convection velocity of the large-scales departs slightly, but unequivocally, from the mean velocity.

Abstract:While direct numerical simulation (DNS) of multiphase flows has been the focus of many research investigations in recent years, large eddy simulation (LES) of multiphase flows remains a challenge. There is no standardized set of governing equations for multiphase LES. Different approaches and formulations have been discussed in the literature, each with its own advantages and disadvantages. In this paper, the conventional (non-weighted) filtering approach is compared with the density-weighted Favre filtering method by evaluating the subgrid scale (SGS) energy transfer for a simple test case of a shear-thinning droplet in air. The findings reveal that, unlike the Favre filtering approach, the conventional filtering method results in a notable amount of nonphysical backward scatter in the flow. Based on these results, the Favre filtering method appears preferable and is applied to the a priori analysis of shear-thinning liquid jets, where the viscosity has been modeled using the Carreau–Yasuda model. First, by explicitly filtering existing DNS data of shear-thinning jet breakup into stagnant air, the order of magnitude of different SGS terms is evaluated using the Favre filtering method. Consistent with earlier studies on Newtonian jets, the present study indicates that the diffusive term remains negligible, while the convective term plays a dominant role. Functional and structural models for the closure of the convective SGS term are assessed by means of a correlation analysis and an order of magnitude study. Existing structural models provide good results for both Newtonian and shear-thinning cases. Promising a posteriori model candidates are discussed.

Using Large Eddy Simulation to Study Airflows in and around Buildings

Abstract:This investigation uses three subgrid-scale models of large eddy simulation (LES) to study airflows in and around buildings. They are the Smagorinsky model, a filtered dynamic subgrid- scale model and a stimulated small-scale subgrid-scale model. For outdoor airflow that is highly turbulent, the simple Smagorinsky model is sufficient. For indoor airflow where laminar flow can be as important as turbulent one, the filtered dynamic subgrid-scale model and the stimulated small-scale subgrid-scale model are recommended. However, the computing time required by the filtered dynamic subgrid-scale model and the stimulated small-scale subgrid-scale model are considerably higher than that by the Smagorinsky model. This paper also discusses how to set up boundary conditions for wind and how to simulate indoor and outdoor airflow together with good resolution and reasonable size of computational domain for natural ventilation studies.

Abstract:Numerical simulations of atmospheric circulation models are limited by their finite spatial resolution, and so large eddy simulation (LES) is the preferred approach to study these models. In LES a low-pass filter is applied to the flow field to separate the large and small scale motions. In implicitly filtered LES the computational mesh and discretization schemes are considered to be the low-pass filter while in the explicitly filtered LES approach the filtering procedure is separated from the grid and discretization operators and allows for better control of the numerical errors. The aim of this paper is to study and compare implicitly filtered and explicitly filtered LES of atmospheric circulation models in spectral space. To achieve this goal we present the results of implicitly filtered and explicitly filtered LES of a barotropic atmosphere circulation model on the sphere in spectral space and compare them with the results obtained from direct numerical simulation (DNS). Our study shows that although in the computation of some integral quantities like total kinetic energy and total enstrophy the results obtained from implicitly filtered LES and explicitly filtered LES show the same good agreement with the DNS results, explicit filtering produces energy spectra that show better agreement with the DNS results. More importantly, explicit filtering captures the location of coherent structures over time while implicit filtering does not.

Abstract:The large-eddy simulation of a different Reynolds number of turbulent vorticity flows over 2D cavities is presented in this paper. For the turbulent case the influences of the Reynolds number of income flow was considered. The mathematical model corresponds to the Large Eddy Simulation (LES) strategy relies on the conjoint use of a finite-difference scheme and a selective filter. Some important results and conclusions are presented. The phenomena of the external flow would touch the bottom of the cavity with difference way which depends on a specific value of the flow parameters. These conditions have important impacts on the vorticity flow inside the cavity. In order to control the intensity of the vorticity flow over a cavity, the cavity aspect ratios must be designed correlated to the income flow condition. (C) 2011 Published by Elsevier Ltd. A Nonlinear Sub-grid Scale Model for Compressible Turbulent Flow

Abstract:The governing equations for large eddy simulation (LES) are obtained by filtering the Navier-Stokes (N-S) equations with standard (non-Favre filtering) spatial filter function. The filtered scale stress due to the standard filtering is then reconstructed by using the Taylor series expansion. The loss of information due to truncating the expansion up to the first derivative term is modeled by a dynamic nonlinear model (DNM), which is free from any empirical constant and wall damping function. The DNM avoids the singularity of the model and shows good local stability. Unlike the conventional dynamic Smagorinsky model (DSM), the DNM does not require the plane averaging and reduces the computational cost. The turbulent flow over a double ellipsoid for Reynolds number of 4.25 × 106 and Mach number of 8.02 is simulated numerically to validate the proposed approach. The results are compared with experiment data, as well as the data of Reynolds averaged numerical simulation (RANS).

Abstract:In this work, we will present a physically consistent theory to derive the governing equations of the Large Eddy Simulation (LES) framework based on first principles rather than the motivation to conduct computationally affordable simulations of turbulent flows. Therefore, we assume that a coarse-grained fluid element, subsequently called super fluid element, can be locally defined comprising a large number of smaller elementary fluid elements. Then, similar to non-equilibrium molecular dynamics (NEMD), in which the transport equations of an elementary fluid element can be consistently reconstructed from the local, collective dynamics of molecules, the transport equations of a super fluid element can be derived from the local, collective dynamics of elementary fluid elements. Interestingly, we find: (a) Favre filtering is a physical consistency condition, (b) why Boussinesq's hypothesis in conjunction with eddy viscosity models is commonly employed in LES and (c) that the LES framework might be more than a numerical turbulence model for computational fluid dynamics (CFD).

Abstract:A high accurate finite volume method of non-uniform meshes for large eddy simulation(LES) is presented in order to precisely predict complex incompressible turbulent flows.The filtered Navier-Stokes equation is solved numerically on non-staggered grids with a finite volume fourth-order-accurate compact scheme for spatial discretization and fourth-order Runge-Kutta integration for time advancement.The pressure-velocity coupling is handled by the momentum interpolation method with a fourth-order-accurate compact scheme.The numerical simulations of a curved channel flow,a flow around a wing of NACA0012 section and a flow passage of a reversible pump-turbine runner are performed successfully by LES with a dynamic Smagroinsky model for subgrid stress and with immersed boundary method for nonslip boundray condition.The results are in good agreement with data in literatures.It is concluded that the proposed method has significant interests in application of LES in fluid machinery engineering.

Abstract:Flow past a circular cylinder at the subcritical Reynolds number of 3900 is numerically investigated based on large-eddy simulations (LESs) via the open-source toolbox OpenFOAM. Good grid convergence property is achieved for the present LESs with different subgrid-scale models as far as the near-wake statistics are concerned. On the intermediate-resolution grid, current LES data in terms of mean flow and turbulence quantities are in good agreement with the benchmark experimental results. A comparison study on the Smagorinsky model manifests that increasing the model coefficient results in a longer recirculation length and smaller drag and lift coefficients. The budget analysis of the turbulent kinetic energy (TKE) equation suggests that the main source in the wake area is the TKE production, which is transported downstream mainly through the advection by mean flow and further moved upward and downward through the transport terms. The flow patterns indicate that the weak production rates induced by the shear layers delay the downward movement of the mean flow, resulting in a longer recirculation region. This dynamic picture provides a reliable explanation for the differences in the recirculation length and mean flow profiles observed in the near-wake area from different experimental and numerical studies.
