Comparison of Both Dissection Techniques in Rat Orthotopic Kidney Transplantation

Abstract:Objective To compare cotton-tipped sticks technique and hydrodissection technique using in a rat model of orthotopic kidney transplantation.Methods Forty Male Wistar and Forty SD rats were used as kidney donors and recipients,respectively.After recipient nephrectomy,left kidney grafts were implanted orthotopically using standard microsurgical techniques.Two different methods of dissection of the graft and recipient vessels were used.In group A,the dissection was performed using blunt dissection with cotton-tipped sticks and jeweler's forceps(n=40);In group B,dissection was performed using water dissection technique(n=40).Results Kidney transplantation was successfully used in both groups.Total operating time for harvesting and implantation in group B was shorter than that in group A [(15.62±3.15) min vs(21.20±4.02) min and(55.34±6.78) min vs(61.54±7.05) min](both P0.05).Total operating complication rate and vasospasm rate in group B were lower than those in group A(10% vs 60% and 5% vs 15% respectively)(both P0.05).Conclusion Hydrodissection is safe,fast and can reduce trauma,and does not require any special instruments,demands less surgical skills,and may be useful in other transplantation models.
