Abstract:Although increasingly popular, software component techniques still lack suitable formal foundations on top of which rigorous methodologies for the description and analysis of software architectures could be built. This paper aims to contribute in this direction: building on previous work by the authors on coalgebraic semantics, it discusses component refinement at three different but interrelated levels: behavioural, syntactic, i.e., relative to component interfaces, and architectural. Software architectures are defined through component aggregation. On the other hand, such aggregations, no matter how large and complex they are, can also be dealt with as components themselves, which paves the way to a discipline of hierarchical design. In this context, a major contribution of this paper is the introduction of a set of rules for architectural refinement.

Abstract:The technique of Galois connections has been applied successfully in many areas of computer science. By employing coalgebras as models for software components, we claim that different forms of behavior model and types of state transitions for components are instances of a single form of coalgebra in a Kleisli category. Based on the Kleisli category, the results on forward/backward morphisms and refinement of components in Set are still satisfied in this more generic framework. We propose a notion of pre-Galois connection in the context of coalgebras for refinement of state-based software components which takes into consideration not only the refinement ordering but also the dynamics of the components, and we study its properties in the Kleisli category. This notion is a powerful tool for relating a component to its refinement and for relating a component to its abstraction. Thus it provides a basis for reasoning about state-based software designs and reverse engineering.

Abstract:Refinement checking plays an important role in system verification. It establishes properties of an implementation by showing a refinement relationship between the implementation and a specification. Recently, it has been shown that anti-chain based approaches increase the efficiency of trace refinement checking significantly. In this work, we study the problem of adopting anti-chain for stable failures refinement checking, failures-divergence refinement checking and probabilistic refine checking (i.e., a probabilistic implementation against a non-probabilistic specification). We show that the first two problems can be significantly improved, because the state space of the product model may be reduced dramatically. Though applying anti-chain for probabilistic refinement checking is more complicated, we manage to show improvements in some cases. We have integrated these techniques into the PAT model checking framework. Experiments are conducted to demonstrate the efficiency of our approach.

Abstract:Although increasingly popular, Model Driven Architecture (MDA) still lacks suitable formal foundations on top of which rigorous methodologies for the description, analysis and transformation of models could be built. This paper aims to contribute in this direction: building on previous work by the authors on coalgebraic refinement for software components and architectures, it discusses refactoring of models within a coalgebraic semantic framework. Architectures are defined through aggregation based on a coalgebraic semantics for (subsets of) UML. On the other hand, such aggregations, no matter how large and complex they are, can always be dealt with as coalgebras themselves. This paves the way to a discipline of models, transformations which, being invariant under either behavioural equivalence or refinement, are able to formally capture a large number of refactoring patterns. The main ideas underlying this research are presented through a detailed example in the context of refactoring of UML class diagrams.

Abstract:Previous works on formal development for component-based systems usually equate refinement relations as behaviors containment. This setting facilitates verifying safety properties, but can't capture the intuition that a refined component should more easily react to the environment and is not convenient from a point view of design. To address this issue, we argue in favor of defining refinement of component models in terms of alternating simulation, which is a relation on game models with a game-theoretical interpretation. We investigate the refinement relations of component models in the framework of rCOS, which is a formal development method for component systems. We propose the refinement relations of rCOS contract models and specification models respectively and further prove they are alternating simulations. Finally, we define the composition operator on specifications and show the alternating refinement is compositional with respect to this operator.

Abstract:We present a notion of bounded quantification for refinement types and show how it expands the expressiveness of refinement typing by using it to develop typed combinators for: (1) relational algebra and safe database access, (2) Floyd-Hoare logic within a state transformer monad equipped with combinators for branching and looping, and (3) using the above to implement a refined IO monad that tracks capabilities and resource usage. This leap in expressiveness comes via a translation to ``ghost" functions, which lets us retain the automated and decidable SMT based checking and inference that makes refinement typing effective in practice.

Abstract:This paper introduces a generic semantic framework for component-based development, expressed in the unified modelling language UML. The principles of a coalgebraic semantics for class, object and statechart diagrams as well as for use cases, are developed. It is also discussed how to formalize the refinement steps in the development process based upon a suitable notion of behavior refinement. In this way, a formal basis for component-based development in UML is studied, which allows the construction of more complex and specific systems from independent components.

Abstract:Software QoS properties, such as response time, availability, bandwidth requirement, memory usage, among many others, play amajor role in the processes of selecting and composing software components. This paper extends a component calculus to deal, in an effective way, with them. The calculus models components as generalised Mealy machines, i.e., state-based entities interacting along their life time through well defined interfaces of observers and actions. QoS is introduced through an algebraic structure specifying the relevant QoS domain and how its values are composed under different disciplines. A major effect of introducing QoS-awareness is that a number of equivalences holding in the plain calculus become refinement laws. The paper also introduces a prototyper for the calculus developed as a 'proof-of-concept' implementation.

Abstract:This work introduces the novel concept of kind refinement, which we develop in the context of an explicitly polymorphic ML-like language with type-level computation. Just as type refinements embed rich specifications by means of comprehension principles expressed by predicates over values in the type domain, kind refinements provide rich kind specifications by means of predicates over types in the kind domain. By leveraging our powerful refinement kind discipline, types in our language are not just used to statically classify program expressions and values, but also conveniently manipulated as tree-like data structures, with their kinds refined by logical constraints on such structures. Remarkably, the resulting typing and kinding disciplines allow for powerful forms of type reflection, ad-hoc polymorphism and type meta-programming, which are often found in modern software development, but not typically expressible in a type-safe manner in general purpose languages. We validate our approach both formally and pragmatically by establishing the standard meta-theoretical results of type safety and via a prototype implementation of a kind checker, type checker and interpreter for our language.

Abstract:Model-driven design of software for safety-critical applications often relies on mathematically grounded techniques such as the B method. Such techniques consist in the successive applications of refinements to derive a concrete implementation from an abstract specification. Refinement theory defines verification conditions to guarantee that such operations preserve the intended behaviour of the abstract specifications. One of these conditions requires however that concrete operations have exactly the same signatures as their abstract counterpart, which is not always a practical requirement. This paper shows how changes of signatures can be achieved while still staying within the bounds of refinement theory. This makes it possible to take advantage of the mathematical guarantees and tool support provided for the current refinement-based techniques, such as the B method.

Restructuring a concurrent refinement algebra

Abstract:The concurrent refinement algebra has been developed to support rely/guarantee reasoning about concurrent programs. The algebra supports atomic commands and defines parallel composition as a synchronous operation, as in Milner's SCCS. In order to allow specifications to be combined, the algebra also provides a weak conjunction operation, which is also a synchronous operation that shares many properties with parallel composition. The three main operations, sequential composition, parallel composition and weak conjunction, all respect a (weak) quantale structure over a lattice of commands. Further structure involves combinations of pairs of these operations: sequential/parallel, sequential/weak conjunction and parallel/weak conjunction, each pair satisfying a weak interchange law similar to Concurrent Kleene Algebra. Each of these pairs satisfies a common biquantale structure. Additional structure is added via compatible sets of commands, including tests, atomic commands and pseudo-atomic commands. These allow stronger (equality) interchange and distributive laws. This paper describes the result of restructuring the algebra to better exploit these commonalities. The algebra is implemented in Isabelle/HOL.

Counterexample-Guided Abstraction Refinement for Component-Based Systems

Abstract:Compositional verification of invariants is a technique for alleviating the state explosion problem in component-based verification. The efficiency of these methods depends on abstraction, which leads to verification incompleteness. In this paper, we present a unified framework that combines compositional abstraction and counterexample-guided abstraction refinement (CEGAR) to address this incompleteness problem. We propose two refinement approaches: invariant strengthening and state partitioning. In the case of a spurious counterexample, our proposed invariant strengthening approach refines the abstraction by eliminating the infeasible states. The state partitioning approach exploits the semantics of component based systems and obtains a more precise system. Any safety property that holds on the abstraction is guaranteed to hold on the model refined by the state partitioning approach. The examples and experiments in this paper show that our verification method can achieve conclusive results in the verification of safety properties with deadlock freedom in component-based systems.

Abstract:In this paper, we present a co algebraic model for behavioral adaptation in component-based systems. Bisimulation equivalence and refinement relationship are used to ensure that a component can replace another one. When the behavior of two components can not be matched perfectly, behavioral adaptation might be needed to allow substitution of components. In this case, bisimulation is not enough to fit our purposes and a natural transformation between the behavioral functors for components is necessary for behavioral adaptation.

Abstract:The refinement calculus for logic programs is a framework for deriving logic programs from specifications. It is based on a wide-spectrum language that can express both specifications and code, and a refinement relation that models the notion of correct implementation. In this paper we extend and generalise earlier work on contextual refinement. Contextual refinement simplifies the refinement process by abstractly capturing the context of a subcomponent of a program, which typically includes information about the values of the free variables. This paper also extends and generalises module refinement. A module is a collection of procedures that operate on a common data type; module refinement between a specification module A and an implementation module C allows calls to the procedures of A to be systematically replaced with calls to the corresponding procedures of C. Based on the conditions for module refinement, we present a method for calculating an implementation module from a specification module. Both contextual and module refinement within the refinement calculus have been generalised from earlier work and the results are presented in a unified framework.

Abstract:Refinement calculus provides a structured framework for the progressive and modular development of programs, ensuring their correctness throughout the refinement process. This paper introduces a refinement calculus tailored for quantum programs. To this end, we first study the partial correctness of nondeterministic programs within a quantum while language featuring prescription statements. Orthogonal projectors, which are equivalent to subspaces of the state Hilbert space, are taken as assertions for quantum states. In addition to the denotational semantics where a nondeterministic program is associated with a set of trace-nonincreasing super-operators, we also present their semantics in transforming a postcondition to the weakest liberal postconditions and, conversely, transforming a precondition to the strongest postconditions. Subsequently, refinement rules are introduced based on these dual semantics, offering a systematic approach to the incremental development of quantum programs applicable in various contexts. To illustrate the practical application of the refinement calculus, we examine examples such as the implementation of a $Z$-rotation gate, the repetition code, and the quantum-to-quantum Bernoulli factory. Furthermore, we present Quire, a Python-based interactive prototype tool that provides practical support to programmers engaged in the stepwise development of correct quantum programs.

Abstract:Model checking has been considered as a promising approach to establish the correctness of systems. Counterexample-guided abstraction refinement is a key strategy for model checking in verification of large-scale systems. State separation problem poses the main hurdle during the refinement. We present two fast heuristics to solve this problem. We prove the effectiveness of our heuristics by both theoretical analysis and experimental results. Experimental results show the promising performance of our approach.
