Abstract:The compatibility between crumb rubber (CR) and asphalt binder plays a key role in the storage stability and rheological performance of rubberized asphalt binder. This review provides a comprehensive over-view of characteristics of rubberized asphalt binder, factors influencing compatibility, compatibility eval-uation methods, and improvement approaches. Desired compatibility results from the fact that CR is cross-linked with molecules of asphalt binder and evenly distributed in the asphalt binder, forming a homogeneous system. Rheological methods are the most widely used methods for compatibility evalua-tion. Additionally, the hybrid processing of surface activation treatment of CR and additives-grafting has shown to be a promising method for improving the compatibility of rubberized asphalt binder. Abstract:Asphalt pavement with semi-rigid base is the major structure adopted in the new built highway and municipal roads in China. So as to reduce the unfavorable impact on the rehabilitation of municipal roads which require quick resumption of traffic, better base materials should be adopted. If a pavement base fails, the flexible base, i.e. large stone asphalt mixture (LSAM), should be employed in the pavement rehabilitation practice. Focusing on the practice pavement sections using LSAM as base in Hangzhou municipal roads, the effect factors of subgrade modulus, base modulus and base thickness on surface deflection and bending strain in base bottom is analyzed. That work is done through finite element method of software BISAR3.0. The results provide a practice reference for municipal roads rehabilitation needing to open traffic early.
Study on Low Noise Asphalt Pavement Mixture Design

Abstract:To study the methods of the low-noise asphalt pavement mixture mix design,the paper design used gradation and optimum asphalt content as the two main design specifications of low-noise asphalt pavement mixture design.The search used the table as aggregate grading design and determined the best asphalt content by comparative analysis of theoretical calculations,flow test and asphalt fell tests.The results showed that:Mixture of air voids resulted in using the table had a good linear correlation with target air void.The way of determining the best asphalt content using flow test is more consistent with actual project and easy to spread.

Abstract:An unanticipated sideeffect of China’s developing economy was the increase in heavy road trafficvehicles utilizing high pressure tires on both new and old infrastructure.Today the extent of rutting has become one of the main forms of asphalt road surfacebreakage. To improve the robustness and high temperature properties of roadsurfacing asphalt, a new high-modulus material has been developed and used tomodify normal road petroleum asphalt. The results from laboratory experimentsconducted at the Jiangsu Baoli Asphalt Co., LTD and real road trials inPeople's Democratic Republic of Algeria, Shanghai, Shanxi and Jiangsu provincein China, indicate that the high-modulus asphalt performed significantly betterat higher-temperatures when compared to samples of more commonly used asphaltmixtures. The high-modulus additive (No. ZQ-1) was prepared in Jiangsu BaoliAsphalt Co. LTD, and the basic production process, the basic properties as wellas the effection to base bitumen was analysed in the paper. And the DynamicStability was evaluated using an automated rut-depth measuring system. Thewater stability and low temperature properties were also discussed. Themodified asphalt material has comparable storage and usage costs to existingutilized asphalts though with enhanced high-temperature properties.

Abstract:Asphalt pavement construction is a large-volume project, with the ability to recycle the industrial waste and reduce carbon emissions. Rubber-modified asphalt is a carbon-neutralized asphalt-based material, facilitating the recycling of waste rubber materials and improving the road performance of the asphalt mixture. To evaluate the interface interaction of the rubber–asphalt system and its effect on the viscosity characteristics of rubber-modified asphalt, the contact properties of rubber particles in asphalt were analyzed on a microscopic level. Rubber swelling tests and solvent elution tests were conducted on the rubber–asphalt system under different preparation conditions. The swelling ratio, degradation ratio, and swelling–degradation ratio were proposed to evaluate the interface interaction. The results show that the interface interaction of the rubber–asphalt system can be divided into the following three stages: swelling, effective degradation, and over-degradation. The degree of swelling is mainly affected by the content and size of the rubber particles and it is physically condensed, while the degradation is mainly affected by the preparation temperature and preparation time. The effective interface interaction greatly affects the viscosity with the building of the stable three-dimensional network structure. The stronger the interface interaction, the greater the viscosity of the rubber-modified asphalt, except for the 25% content of rubber particles. The gel film will be generated on the surface of the rubber particles throughout the swelling and effective degradation, increasing the viscosity of the rubber-modified asphalt.

Abstract:There are plenty of factors that affect the performance of rubberized asphalt,however,this paper mainly consider the impact that the category of base asphalt bring about to waste crumb rubber modified asphalt.This paper respectively adopts Da Qing and PanJin AH-90# base asphalt,which are commonly used in Heilongjiang province,with the same preparation technique-the powder content is 18%;the power mesh is 80 mesh;the mixing temperature is 180 ℃;the mixing time is 60 min.Penetration,ductility,softening point,elastic recovery and rotation viscosity had been chosen as the technology and performance indexes.Test results indicate that the category of base asphalt has minor influence on rubberized asphalt.

Abstract:The acceleration of urbanization has promoted the increase in the number of urban highway projects, resulting in an increase of emphasis on the quality of urban highway projects. The quality and safety of highway construction directly affects the driving comfort, safety, and service life after it is put into operation. Among them, asphalt pavement is an important structure in highway construction, and it is also a key link that directly affects the construction quality. In order to ensure the quality of construction, it is necessary to strengthen on-site testing during the construction process to discover problems in time, and to ensure that the construction is up to standard. This paper mainly presents an analysis on the necessity and application of on-site quality inspection technology for asphalt pavement construction of highway engineering, and outlines measures to improve highway engineering construction testing technology.

Abstract:Resistance of asphalt mix to low-temperature cracking and rutting at high temperature is very important to ensure the service performance of asphalt pavement under seasonal changes in temperature and loading. However, it is challenging to balance the improvement of such resistance by using additives, e.g., anti-rutting agent (ARA). This study focuses on improving the flexibility of anti-rutting asphalt mix by incorporating crumb rubber (CR) and ARA. The properties of the prepared modified asphalt mix were evaluated in the laboratory by performing wheel tracking, three-point bending, indirect tensile, and uniaxial compression tests. The experimental results showed that the dynamic stability of modified asphalt mix was significantly increased due to the addition of ARA and further improved by incorporating CR. The maximum bending strain at −10 °C was increased due to the contribution of CR. The results of indirect tensile strength and resilient modulus further indicated that the CR-modified anti-rutting mixture was more flexible. Moreover, the field observation and evaluation indicated that the CR-modified anti-rutting asphalt pavement met the standard requirements, better than normal asphalt mixture in many parameters. A conclusion can be made that incorporating CR in asphalt mixture prepared with ARA can improve pavement performance at both high and low in-service temperatures.

Feasibility Evaluation of Preparing Asphalt Mixture with Low-Grade Aggregate, Rubber Asphalt and Desulphurization Gypsum Residues

Abstract:Road construction consumes great amounts of high-grade natural resources. Using low-grade natural rocks or some solid wastes as substitute materials is a hot topic. Considering this, the feasibility of using low-grade granite aggregate, solid waste-based filler (desulphurization gypsum residues, DGR) and binder (waste tire rubber modified asphalt, RMA) simultaneously in asphalt mixtures has been fully investigated in this research. The commonly used base asphalt and limestone powder (LP) filler were control groups. Material characteristics of raw materials mainly including micro-morphology, functional group, mineral phase, chemical composition and thermal stability were first evaluated in order to recognize them. Four asphalt mixtures (two asphalt binder and two filler) were then designed by standard Superpave method. Finally, a detailed investigation into the pavement performance of asphalt mixtures was carried out. The moisture damage resistance and low-temperature crack resistance were detected by the changing rules of stability, strength and fracture energy, and the high-temperature stability and fatigue performance were determined by wheel tracking test and indirect tensile (IDT) fatigue test, respectively. Results suggested that RMA and DGR both showed positive effects on the low-temperature crack resistance and fatigue property of the granite asphalt mixture. DGR also strengthened moisture stability. The contribution of RMA on high-temperature deformation resistance of the granite asphalt mixture was compelling. It can offset the insufficiency in high-temperature stability made by DGR. A conclusion can be made that asphalt mixture prepared with granite, DGR and RMA possesses satisfactory pavement performances.

Abstract:Rubber asphalt has always been considered to have the most potential for the disposal of waste tires as sustainable infrastructure. However, the covalently cross-linked tire rubber presents an extreme challenge in reusing waste rubbers in roads. Rubberized asphalt with finely dispersed or colloidal structure has been regarded as a potential binder used as road material because of the improved properties in terms of storage stability, easy processing and high content of incorporation. However, the mixing mechanism between the finely dispersed rubber on micro-nano scale with asphalt is still not clear, which restricts its further development as value-added material. Devulcanized rubber (DR) was introduced to improve the compatibility between asphalt and rubber. The basic chemicals of DR and asphalt were introduced based on their structures. Furthermore, the interactions between DR and asphalt were discussed according to the functional elements at different levels, and the concept of DR as "the fifth component" of asphalt was put forward. Finally, high performance, environmental and economic effects and applications of devulcanized-rubber-modified asphalt (DRMA) were discussed. The review is expected to provide a guide for the wide application of DRMA, which is still restricted by poor compatibility and bad stability during processing, storage and recycling.

Abstract:Dry-processed rubberized asphalt mixture has recently attracted a lot of attention as an alternative to conventional asphalt mixtures. Dry-processed rubberized asphalt pavement has improved the overall performance characteristics compared to the conventional asphalt road. The objective of this research is to demonstrate the reconstruction of rubberized asphalt pavement and evaluate the pavement performance of dry-processed rubberized asphalt mixture based on laboratory and field tests. The noise mitigation effect of dry-processed rubberized asphalt pavement was evaluated at the field construction sites. A prediction of pavement distresses and long-term performance was also conducted using mechanistic-empirical pavement design. In terms of experimental evaluation, the dynamic modulus was estimated using materials test system (MTS) equipment, the low-temperature crack resistance was characterized by the fracture energy from the indirect tensile strength test (IDT), and the asphalt aging was assessed with the rolling thin-film oven (RTFO) test and the pressure aging vessel (PAV) test. The rheology properties of asphalt were estimated by a dynamic shear rheometer (DSR). Based on the test results: (1) The dry-processed rubberized asphalt mixture presented better resistance to cracking, as the fracture energy was enhanced by 29–50% compared to that of conventional hot mix asphalt (HMA); and (2) the high-temperature anti-rutting performance of the rubberized pavement increased. The dynamic modulus increased up to 19%. The findings of the noise test showed that at different vehicle speeds, the rubberized asphalt pavement greatly reduced the noise level by 2–3 dB. The pavement M-E (mechanistic-empirical) design-predicted distress illustrated that the rubberized asphalt pavement could reduce the IRI, rutting, and bottom-up fatigue-cracking distress based on a comparison of prediction results. To sum up, the dry-processed rubber-modified asphalt pavement has better pavement performance compared to the conventional asphalt pavement.

Abstract:This paper developed a new environmentally friendly composite modified asphalt material and studied the composite modification of Qingchuan rock asphalt (QRA) and waste tire rubber powder (RP) was studied in this paper. QRA/RP composite modified asphalt was prepared by adding these two materials as modifiers into matrix asphalt and compared with matrix asphalt and QRA modified asphalt. The basic properties of asphalt before and after aging were evaluated by the rotating thin film oven test. The high-temperature performance and permanent deformation resistance at different temperatures and frequencies were analyzed by the dynamic shear rheological test. The bending creep stiffness test was used to evaluate the low-temperature performance. In addition, the microstructure and modification mechanism of composite-modified asphalt were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy and infrared spectroscopy. The results show that QRA-modified asphalt is superior to matrix asphalt in terms of mass loss, viscosity ratio, and residual penetration, while QRA/RP composite-modified asphalt is further improved on this basis, QRA/RP composite modified asphalt can effectively improve the high and low temperature performance of asphalt.. Although the addition of RP is mainly based on physical modification, it also causes weak chemical reactions and enhances the adhesion of asphalt. The interaction between Qingchuan Rock asphalt and rubber powder significantly improves the overall stability of asphalt structure.

Abstract:Due to the high viscosity, rubber asphalt displays poor construction workability, which ultimately compromises the comfort and safety of pavement. In this study, specified control variates were used to study the effect of the waste engine oil (WEO) addition sequence on the properties of rubber asphalt while ensuring the consistency of other preparation parameters. Initially, in order to evaluate their compatibility, the storage stability and aging properties of the three groups of samples were determined. The variation of asphalt viscosity was then analyzed using a low-field nuclear magnetic resonance (LF-NMR) test, by predicting the fluidity of each sample. Subsequently, the results showed that the rubber asphalt prepared by premixing WEO and crumb rubber (CR) had the best properties of low temperature, compatibility, and fluidity. On this basis, the effects of WEO content, shear rate, shear temperature, and shear time on the properties of low viscosity rubber asphalt were investigated separately through response surface methodology (RSM). Quantitative data from the basic performance experiment were used to fit the high precision regression equation, thereby correlating a more precise level of factors with experimental results. The response surface model prediction analysis showed that the optimal preparation parameters of the low viscosity rubber asphalt were 60 min shear time, 180 °C shear temperature, and 5000 r/min shear rate. Simultaneously, the addition of 3.5% of WEO showed great potential as an asphalt viscosity reducer. Ultimately, this study provides an accurate method for determining the optimum preparation parameters of asphalt.

Abstract:Gansu province has complex topography, strong ultraviolet radiation, so the asphalt pavement often appears aging and other diseases in the service period. Firstly, the rubber asphalt for as short-term and long-term were made to be the simulated aging test by the Asphalt rotary film heating test (RTFOT) and the pressure ageing vessel (PAV) accelerated asphalt aging test. Secondly, the rubber asphalt was studied by the UV aging; the RTFOT aged sample was placed to be the ultraviolet aging in ultraviolet radiation box to do the Dynamic shear test (called DSR). The results showed that: the rubber asphalt had better ability to resist fatigue and anti-ultraviolet ageing, suitable for high altitude strong ultraviolet region in Gansu province.

Abstract:Asphalt fume emission caused by high-temperature is large during the production and construction of rubber modified asphalt, and the toxic and odor gas contained seriously pollutes the environment. This paper prepared rubber modified asphalt (RMA) and deodorant rubber modified asphalt (DRMA) and evaluated the impact of deodorants on the environmental and physical properties. Modern testing techniques, such as gel permeation chromatography, are used to explore the microscopic morphology of RMA, DRMA, and crumb rubber extracted from RMA and DRMA, so as to reveal the mechanism of deodorant in asphalt. Meanwhile, the effect of deodorant was monitored from macro scales by applying electrochemical sensing technology. The results show inhibiting the degradation of rubber in asphalt is the main mechanism of deodorant. Deodorant can not only promote the swelling of rubber in asphalt and improve the stability of sulfur elements, but also capture the odor particles in asphalt fume, reduce the concentration of polluting organic and H 2 S, realize the application of rubber modified asphalt environmentally-friendly, and promote the recycling of waste tires and the sustainability of pavements for pollution and carbon reduction.

Abstract:The applications of rubber-modified asphalt and its mixtures have received widespread attention due to the environmental and economic benefits of such materials. However, studies on the structural performance of rubber-powder-modified asphalt pavement are only concentrated on a certain scale, leading to research on the structural performance of pavement mostly focusing on mechanical responses at a macro scale. Therefore, the present study adopts the concept of multi-scale research to analyze the viscoelasticity of high-dosage-modified asphalt and its mixtures at a microscopic scale from the perspective of meso-mechanical analysis. In this paper, to ensure the overall durability of a structure, the effective asphalt film thickness and coarse aggregate angularity index of the test material were measured first. The viscoelasticity of asphalt modified with rubber powder was then analyzed using a Brinell viscosity test, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and a dynamic shear rheometer (DSR). We determined the optimal amount of rubber powder to be 30%. A universal testing machine was used to study the influence of different temperatures and loading frequencies on the viscoelastic properties of different asphalt mixtures. Research on the dynamic modulus found that the incorporation of rubber powder increases the elastic properties of the mixture such that the rubber-powder-modified asphalt mixture had a higher dynamic modulus. At the same time, the high-dosage-modified asphalt mixture was found to be closer to an elastomer under a low temperature and high frequency. At a high temperature and low frequency, the asphalt mixture changed into a viscoelastic body whose viscous properties were mainly affected by the asphalt binder. The addition of rubber powder changed the temperature sensitivity of the asphalt and then affected the viscoelastic properties of the asphalt mixture.

Abstract:Pure crumb rubber asphalt mixture using dry process has certain requirement of mineral gradation with the potential disadvantage of uneven mixing under the traditional temperature. In this paper the gradation design of asphalt mixture Sup-13 mixed with TOR and crumb rubber using dry process was studied with the Superpave design method, pavement performance of asphalt mixture including high temperature stability, cracking resistance at low temperature and water stability was tested in the experiment. Results show that Superpave design method is suitable for the research on the asphalt mixture of TOR and rubber, with getting moving stability 3682 times/mm, failure strain 2573.8με, residual stability 84.8% and the ratio of freeze-thaw splitting 80.1%. The performance is so good to meet the requirements for asphalt pavement performance.
