Abstract:We introduce and study a geometric heat flow to find Killing vector fields on closed Riemannian manifolds with positive sectional curvature. We study its various properties, prove the global existence of the solution to this flow, discuss its convergence and possible applications, and its relation to the Navier-Stokes equations on manifolds and Kazdan-Warner-Bourguignon-Ezin identity for conformal Killing vector fields. We also provide two new criterions on the existence of Killing vector fields. A similar flow to finding holomorphic vector fields on Kähler manifolds will be studied by Li and Liu (2014).

Abstract:Toward identifying the number of minimal surfaces sharing the same boundary from the geometry of the boundary, we propose a numerical scheme with high speed and high accuracy. Our numerical scheme is based on the method of fundamental solutions. We establish the convergence analysis for Dirichlet energy and -error analysis for mean curvature. Each of the approximate solutions in our scheme is a smooth surface, a significant difference from previous studies that required mesh generation.

Abstract:The Plateau's problem seeks to determine a surface of minimal area which spans a given boundary. It is widely studied for its varied mathematical formulations, applications and relevance to physical models such as soap films. We revisit the problem and study a soap film model in the spirit of capillarity formulations in two dimensions. Our approach introduces a nonlocal geometric potential in the variational length minimization scheme. This incorporates effects of thickness of soap films and provides insight into addressing the so-called collapsing phenomenon and other observable physical phenomena and properties.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider the first boundary value problem for a class of steady non-Newtonian micropolar fluid equations with heat convection in the three-dimensional smooth and bounded domain $ \Omega $. By using the fixed-point theorem and introducing a family of penalized problems, under the condition that the external force term and the vortex viscosity coefficient are appropriately small, the existence and uniqueness of strong solutions of the problem are obtained.

Abstract:In this paper, we prove the existence of classical solutions to the Dirichlet problem of a class of quasi-linear elliptic equations on an unbounded cone and a U-type domain in Rn (n⩾2). This problem comes from the study of mean curvature flow or its generalization, the flow by powers of mean curvature. Our approach is a modified version of the classical Perron method, where the solutions to the minimal surface equation are used as sub-solutions and a family auxiliary functions are constructed as super-solutions.

Abstract:We study an initial-boundary-value problem for a quasilinear thermoelastic plate of Kirchhoff \& Love-type with parabolic heat conduction due to Fourier, mechanically simply supported and held at the reference temperature on the boundary. For this problem, we show the short-time existence and uniqueness of classical solutions under appropriate regularity and compatibility assumptions on the data. Further, we use barrier techniques to prove the global existence and exponential stability of solutions under a smallness condition on the initial data. It is the first result of this kind established for a quasilinear non-parabolic thermoelastic Kirchhoff & Love plate in multiple dimensions.

Abstract:The fluid flow across an unbounded horizontal plate embedded with uniform mass diffusion is studied in this article together with the impacts of the chemical reaction and parabolic motion, while the temperature and concentration of the plate remain constant. Using initial and boundary conditions, partial differential equations were used to describe this phenomenon. Introduce some appropriate non-dimensional variables and utilize the Laplace transform method to solve the corresponding dimensionless equations. The following analytical remedies for heat, velocity and concentration profiles were produced in terms of exponential and (erfc) complementary error functions. A MATLAB programme is used to exhibit the results as graphs for various parameters. By creating graphs, we may assess the characteristics of the velocity, Heat and concentration while also studying the physical aspects for various factors.

Abstract:This paper aims to investigate the influence of chemical reaction and the combined effects of internal heat generation and a convective boundary condition on the laminar boundary layer MHD heat and mass transfer flow over a moving vertical flat plate. The lower surface of the plate is in contact with a hot fluid while the stream of cold fluid flows over the upper surface with heat source and chemical reaction. The basic equations governing the flow, heat transfer, and concentration are reduced to a set of ordinary differential equations by using appropriate transformation for variables and solved numerically by Runge-Kutta fourth-order integration scheme in association with shooting method. The effects of physical parameters on the velocity, temperature, and concentration profiles are illustrated graphically. A table recording the values of skin friction, heat transfer, and mass transfer at the plate is also presented. The discussion focuses on the physical interpretation of the results as well as their comparison with previous studies which shows good agreement as a special case of the problem.

Abstract:We show existence and uniqueness of strong solutions to a Navier-Stokes/Cahn-Hilliard type system on a given two-dimensional evolving surface in the case of different densities and a singular (logarithmic) potential. The system describes a diffuse interface model for a two-phase flow of viscous incompressible fluids on an evolving surface. We also establish the validity of the instantaneous strict separation property from the pure phases. To show these results we use our previous achievements on local well-posedness together with suitable novel regularity results for the convective Cahn-Hilliard equation. The latter allows to obtain higher-order energy estimates to extend the local solution globally in time. To this aim the time evolution of energy type quantities has to be calculated and estimated carefully.

Partial Plateau's Problem with $H$-mass

Abstract:Classically, Plateau's problem asks to find a surface of the least area with a given boundary $B$. In this article, we investigate a version of Plateau's problem, where the boundary of an admissible surface is only required to partially span $B$. Our boundary data is given by a flat $(m-1)$-chain $B$ and a smooth compactly supported differential $(m-1)$-form $\Phi$. We are interested in minimizing $ \mathbf{M}(T) - \int_{\partial T} \Phi $ over all $m$-dimensional rectifiable currents $T$ in $\mathbb{R}^n$ such that $\partial T$ is a subcurrent of the given boundary $B$. The existence of a rectifiable minimizer is proven with Federer and Fleming's compactness theorem. We generalize this problem by replacing the mass $\mathbf{M}$ with the $H$-mass of rectifiable currents. By minimizing over a larger class of objects, called scans with boundary, and by defining their $H$-mass as a type of lower-semicontinuous envelope over the $H$-mass of rectifiable currents, we prove an existence result for this problem by using Hardt and De Pauw's BV compactness theorem.

Abstract:The natural-convection boundary-layer flow over a semi-infinite heated plate of arbitrary inclination is studied by first identifying a set of combined boundary-layer variables and then casting the governing equations into a universal form. The generalized problem yields the existing similarity solutions for the limiting cases of horizontal and vertical plates, and describes the gradual transition of the flow pattern between these two limits at distances from the leading edge which depend on the inclination angle. Near the leading edge the buoyancy force acting normal to the plate causes an ‘impulsive’ driving force to the fluid motion along the plate, while the ‘regular’ driving force exerted by the tangential buoyancy force becomes dominating downstream. Both the exact and the locally-similar solutions are obtained and are found to agree well with each other.

Abstract:A hybrid application of the Laplace transform method and a control-volume formulation in conjunction with the hyperbolic shape functions is applied to investigate the hyperbolic diffusion problems with the pulsed boundary conditions in various coordinate systems. The Laplace transform method is used to remove the time-dependent terms in the governing differential equations and the boundary conditions, and then the transformed equations are discretized by the control volume scheme. The primary difficulty in dealing with the present problem is the suppression of numerical oscillations in the vicinity of sharp discontinuities. The results show that the numerical results agree well with the analytic solution and do not exhibit numerical oscillations in the vicinity of the jump discontinuity. The present method also can solve the problems with the singular point.
Minimum Flow Steepest Descent Approach for Nonlinear PDE

Abstract:This paper presents a minimum flow approach applicable to a wide range of doubly nonlinear diffusion problems. We introduce a minimum flow steepest descent algorithm that seeks an optimal traffic flow by minimizing an internal energy function, while incorporating a specific minimum flow constraint for the transition work. This flexible framework surpasses traditional methods by generalizing (among other things) the established $H^{-1}$-theory for linear diffusion to the nonlinear setting. It offers distinct advantages in handling diverse applications, leveraging both the intrinsic internal energy and the inherent traffic flow concepts. The approach demonstrably tackles various applications, including fluid flow in porous media and many other scenarios like the Stefan/Hele-Shaw problem. Notably, it can handle diverse differential operators, encompassing even nonlinear ones like the $p-$Laplacian and Leray-Lions operators.

We study the boundary controllability of [math] system of heat equations by using a flatness approach. According to the relation between the diffusion coefficients of the heat equation, it is known that the system can be neither null-controllable nor null-controllable for any [math], where [math]. Here we recover this result in the case that [math] by using the flatness method, and we obtain an explicit formula for the control and for the corresponding solutions. In particular, the state and the control have Gevrey regularity in time and in space.

Abstract:In this paper I will revisit the construction of a global weak solution to the volume preserving mean curvature flow via discrete minimizing movement scheme by Mugnai, Seis and Spadaro [L. Mugnai, C. Seis and E. Spadaro, Global solutions to the volume-preserving mean-curvature flow, Calc. Var. Partial Differential Equations 55 2016, 1, Article ID 18]. This method is based on the gradient flow approach due to Almgren, Taylor and Wang [F. Almgren, J. E. Taylor and L. Wang, Curvature-driven flows: a variational approach, SIAM J. Control Optim. 31 1993, 2, 387вАУ438] and Luckhaus and Sturzenhecker [S. Luckhaus and T. Sturzenhecker, Implicit time discretization for the mean curvature flow equation, Calc. Var. Partial Differential Equations 3 1995, 2, 253вАУ271] and my aim is to replace the volume penalization with the volume constraint directly in the discrete scheme, which from practical point of view is perhaps more natural. A technical novelty is the proof of the density estimate which is based on second variation argument.

Abstract:We introduce a diffused interface formulation of the Plateau problem, where the Allen--Cahn energy $\mathcal{AC}_\varepsilon$ is minimized under a volume constraint $v$ and a spanning condition on the level sets of the densities. We discuss two singular limits of these Allen--Cahn Plateau problems: when $\varepsilon\to 0^+$, we prove convergence to the Gauss' capillarity formulation of the Plateau problem with positive volume $v$; and when $\varepsilon\to 0^+$, $v\to 0^+$ and $\varepsilon/v\to 0^+$, we prove convergence to the classical Plateau problem (in the homotopic spanning formulation of Harrison and Pugh). As a corollary of our analysis we resolve the incompatibility between Plateau's laws and the Allen--Cahn equation implied by a regularity theorem of Tonegawa and Wickramasekera. In particular, we show that Plateau-type singularities can be approximated by energy minimizing solutions of the Allen--Cahn equation with a volume Lagrange multiplier and a transmission condition on a spanning free boundary.

Abstract:Hypersonic near-continuum flow over a flat plate with micro-scale roughness is studied using the kinetic direct simulation Monte Carlo method on roughness module configurations with different relative roughness (h) values and roughness densities (RN) under a matrix of freestream parameters (Mach number Ma∞, Reynolds number Re∞, temperature T∞, and Knudsen number Kn∞). An open-source Stochastic PArallel Rarefied-gas Time-accurate Analyzer code, which enables Cartesian grid adaption and efficient parallelization, is utilized for the rough-plate flow simulations. Flowfield analysis reveals that the local patterns inside the roughness modules evolve starting from closed (two vortices) via transitional ultimately to open (one vortex) by an increase in h, with co-existing shrinkage of high-density zones and attenuation of density peaks. The surface quantities are significantly influenced by the flowfield characteristics, and a local association between the peak heat flux and the peak pressure is identified. Non-dimensional peak heating and pressure correlation laws for the local peak heat flux and pressure coefficients in terms of two length-scale transformations are proposed, enabling the capture of local heating and pressure extrema on rough plates with varying h and RN conditions under different Ma∞, Re∞, and T∞ parameter values. The peak heat flux and pressure coefficients can be described by analogous correlating equations expressed by first-order-polynomial or power functions. An increase in the rarefaction degree (Kn∞) deviating from the near-continuum regime causes the correlation laws to fail.

Abstract:A Cahn-Hilliard-Navier-Stokes system for two-phase flow on an evolving surface with non-matched densities is derived using methods from rational thermodynamics. For a Cahn-Hilliard energy with a singular (logarithmic) potential short time well-posedness of strong solutions together with a separation property is shown, under the assumption of a priori prescribed surface evolution. The problem is reformulated with the help of a pullback to the initial surface. Then a suitable linearization and a contraction mapping argument for the pullback system are used. In order to deal with the linearized system, it is necessary to show maximal $L^2$-regularity for the surface Stokes operator in the case of variable viscosity and to obtain maximal $L^p$-regularity for the linearized Cahn-Hilliard system.
