Abstract:A theoretical study is presented of convection in a horizontal fluid layer heated from below which is periodically accelerated in its plane. The analysis is based on Galerkin methods of the underlying Boussinesq equations. Shaking in a fixed direction breaks the original isotropy of the layer. At onset of convection we find longitudinal rolls, where the roll axis aligns parallel to the acceleration direction. With increasing acceleration amplitude a shear instability takes over and transverse rolls with the axis perpendicular to the shaking direction nucleate at onset.

Abstract:A model for depicting the laminar mixed heat convection by forced laminar flow and free convection inside a tube with nonhomogeneous heating from the upper half and isolating from the lower half is established. The heat conduction in the tube wall and the nonhomogeneity of fluid have been considered in the model and the influences of different fluid (water and water solution of ethylene glycol) and different heat flux directions are studied. Experiments on the mixed heat convection in a horizontal tube with nonhomogeneous heating from the upper half and isolating from the lower half are conducted. Results obtained from theory and experiments in horizontal tube reveal the effects of gravity on the laminar heat convection. The necessary theoretical and experimental basis for the ground simulating experiments on the heat transfer of radiators in the airspace micro gravity environment is thus provided.

Abstract:The boundary-layer flow over semi-infinite vertical and horizontal flat plates, heated to a constant temperature in a uniform free stream, is studied when the buoyancy forces either aid or oppose the development of the boundary layer. Different mixed-convection parameters are introduced in the formulation of the respective problems involving horizontal and vertical surfaces such that smooth transition from one convective limit to the other is possible; in particular the governing equations for the purely forced and free convection cases are respectively recovered from the zero values of the Grashoff and Reynolds numbers. An effective numerical scheme is developed to incorporate the integral boundary condition appearing in the governing equations of the flow over a horizontal flat plate, thereby rendering numerical convergence possible. Locally similar and locally nonsimilar solutions are also obtained. They show considerable deviation of the velocity profiles from the rigorous finite-difference solution in the region of intense mixed convection, although good agreement exists for the wall values, as represented by the friction factors and Nusselt numbers, which are of primary interest. Simple explicit expressions correlating local Nusselt numbers over the entire range of mixed convection intensity when Prandtl numbers vary from 0.1 to 10 are determined. The separation points in opposing flows are also obtained.

Abstract:The paper is devoted to the study of natural convection and the formation of delamination in an incompressible liquid due to convective laminar flows in a closed region heated from the side. Weak, medium and intensive modes of stationary laminar thermal, concentration and hemoconcentration (thermohaline) convection are considered, in which nonlinear flow features are manifested that can radically change the flow structure and characteristics of heat and mass transfer. Nonmonotonic dependences of temperature and concentration segregation in the center of the square region on the Grashof number (an intensity of flow) were found. The features of the formation of a nonstationary periodic structure of thermal convection in boundary layers and in the core of a convective flow in a closed region are shown. Details of the formation of countercurrents inside the region with the direction opposite to the main convective flow are given. The influence of vertical and horizontal vibrations on oscillatory convection is shown.

Abstract:We present a numerical study of convection in a horizontal layer comprising a fluid-saturated porous bed overlain by an unconfined fluid layer. Convection is driven by a vertical, destabilising temperature difference applied across the whole system, as in the canonical Rayleigh-Bénard problem. Numerical simulations are carried out using a single-domain formulation of the two-layer problem based on the Darcy-Brinkman equations. We explore the dynamics and heat flux through the system in the limit of large Rayleigh number, but small Darcy number, such that the flow exhibits vigorous convection in both the porous and the unconfined fluid regions, while the porous flow still remains strongly confined and governed by Darcy's law. We demonstrate that the heat flux and average thermal structure of the system can be predicted using previous results of convection in individual fluid or porous layers. We revisit a controversy about the role of subcritical "penetrative convection" in the porous medium, and confirm that such induced flow does not contribute to the heat flux through the system. Lastly, we briefly study the temporal coupling between the two layers and find that the turbulent fluid convection above acts as a low-pass filter on the longer-timescale variability of convection in the porous layer.

Abstract:Natural convection heat transfer in a rectangular cavity filled with a saturated porous medium with variable permeability is investigated analytically and numerically. The side walls of the cavity are heated and cooled by constant heat fluxes, while the horizontal walls are adiabatic. The governing parameters for the problem are thermal Rayleigh number, R, the aspect ratio of the cavity, A, and the variable permeability constant, c. On the basis of the Darcy–Oberbeck–Boussinesq equations, a new analytical solution is developed in the limit of a long shallow cavity. A numerical study of the same phenomenon, obtained by solving the complete system of governing equations, is conducted to assess the validity of the analytical results. It is demonstrated that, for a wide range of the governing parameters, the flow structure and the heat transfer were well predicted by the analytical solution.

Abstract:In the first part, the stability of two-dimensional parallel flow is discussed. A more restrictively general stability criterion for inviscid parallel flow is obtained analytically. In the second part, we report the numerical simulations of the partial-penetrating flow in horizontal convection within a squire cavity tank at high Rayleigh numbers $10^7<Ra<10^{10}$. The fast estab but slowly steadied flow is simulated, where a shallow and closed circulation cell is obtained numerically as partial-penetrating flow for the first time, which is consistent with the experiment.

Abstract:We study Rayleigh-Benard convection in the high-Rayleigh-number and high-Prandtl-number regime, i.e., we consider a fluid in a container that is exposed to strong heating of the bottom and cooling of the top plate in the absence of inertia effects. While the dynamics in the bulk are characterized by a chaotic convective heat flow, the boundary layers at the horizontal container plates are essentially conducting and thus the fluid is motionless. Consequently, the average temperature exhibits a linear profile in the boundary layers. In this article, we rigorously investigate the average temperature and oscillations in the boundary layer via local bounds on the temperature field. Moreover, we deduce that the temperature profile is indeed essentially linear close to the horizontal container plates. Our results are uniform in the system parameters (e.g. the Rayleigh number) up to logarithmic correction terms. An important tool in our analysis is a new Hardy-type estimate for the convecting velocity field, which can be used to control the fluid motion in the layer. The bounds on the temperature field are derived with the help of local maximal regularity estimates for convection-diffusion equations.

Abstract:This paper aims to investigate the influence of chemical reaction and the combined effects of internal heat generation and a convective boundary condition on the laminar boundary layer MHD heat and mass transfer flow over a moving vertical flat plate. The lower surface of the plate is in contact with a hot fluid while the stream of cold fluid flows over the upper surface with heat source and chemical reaction. The basic equations governing the flow, heat transfer, and concentration are reduced to a set of ordinary differential equations by using appropriate transformation for variables and solved numerically by Runge-Kutta fourth-order integration scheme in association with shooting method. The effects of physical parameters on the velocity, temperature, and concentration profiles are illustrated graphically. A table recording the values of skin friction, heat transfer, and mass transfer at the plate is also presented. The discussion focuses on the physical interpretation of the results as well as their comparison with previous studies which shows good agreement as a special case of the problem.

Abstract:The natural-convection boundary-layer flow over a semi-infinite heated plate of arbitrary inclination is studied by first identifying a set of combined boundary-layer variables and then casting the governing equations into a universal form. The generalized problem yields the existing similarity solutions for the limiting cases of horizontal and vertical plates, and describes the gradual transition of the flow pattern between these two limits at distances from the leading edge which depend on the inclination angle. Near the leading edge the buoyancy force acting normal to the plate causes an ‘impulsive’ driving force to the fluid motion along the plate, while the ‘regular’ driving force exerted by the tangential buoyancy force becomes dominating downstream. Both the exact and the locally-similar solutions are obtained and are found to agree well with each other.

Abstract:Investigation to the mixed convective heat and mass transfer over a horizontal plate has been carried out. By applying transformation group theory to analysis of the governing equations of continuity, momentum, energy and diffusion, we show the existence of similarity solution for the problem provided that the temperature and concentration at the wall are proportional to x 4/(7-5n) and that the moving speed of the plate is proportional to x (3-n)/(7-5n), and further obtain a similarity representation of the problem. The similarity equations have been solved numerically by a fourth-order Runge–Kutta scheme. The numerical results obtained for Pr=0.72 and various values of the parameters Sc, K 1, K 2 and K 3 reveals the influence of the parameters on the flow, heat and mass transfer behavior.

Abstract:This paper is concerned with the study of equations of viscous compressible and heat-conducting full magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) steady flows in a horizontal layer under the gravitational force and a large temperature gradient across the layer. We assume as boundary conditions, periodic conditions in the horizontal directions, while in the vertical directions, slip-boundary is assumed for the velocity, vertical conditions for the magnetic field, and fixed temperature or fixed heat flux are prescribed for the temperature. The existence of stationary solution in a small neighborhood of a stationary profile close to hydrostatic state is obtained in Sobolev spaces as a fixed point of some nonlinear operator.

Abstract:This paper investigates the effect of thermal radiation on unsteady convection flow and heat transfer over a vertical permeable stretching surface in porous medium, where the effects of temperature dependent viscosity and thermal conductivity are also considered. By using a similarity transformation, the governing time-dependent boundary layer equations for momentum and thermal energy are first transformed into coupled, non-linear ordinary differential equations with variable coefficients. Numerical solutions to these equations subject to appropriate boundary conditions are obtained by the numerical shooting technique with fourth-fifth order Runge-Kutta scheme. Numerical results show that as viscosity variation parameter increases both the absolute value of the surface friction coefficient and the absolute value of the surface temperature gradient increase whereas the temperature decreases slightly. With the increase of viscosity variation parameter, the velocity decreases near the sheet surface but increases far away from the surface of the sheet in the boundary layer. The increase in permeability parameter leads to the decrease in both the temperature and the absolute value of the surface friction coefficient, and the increase in both the velocity and the absolute value of the surface temperature gradient.

Abstract:The transition to a new turbulent regime in horizontal convection in the case of low Prandtl numbers is analyzed using the Shishkina, Grossmann & Lohse (SGL) theory. The flow driven by the horizontal gradient along a horizontal surface, perpendicular to the acceleration of gravity is shown to transition to turbulence in the plume and the core. This transition to turbulence sets a sequence of heat transfer and momentum transport scalings which are found to follow the SGL prediction for the scaling factors and the prediction of Hughes, Griffith & Mullarney (HGM) for larger forcing amplitudes. These results embed the HGM model in the SGL theory, agreed and extends the known regime diagram of horizontal convection, and provide the first evidence of both regimes at low and intermediate Prandtl numbers and sheds new insights on the role of HC in the earth's inner core dynamics.

Abstract:We use a linear stability analysis to investigate the onset of thermosolutal convection in a horizontal porous layer subject to fixed temperatures and chemical equilibrium on the boundaries' surfaces. The critical Rayleigh number and the corresponding wave number for the exchange of stability and overstability are obtained. The critical value of the parameters for oscillatory convection occurs are obtained. Besides, asymptotic analysis for both small and large values of inter-phase heat transfer coefficient H.

Abstract:The impetus of this paper is to examine the natural convection of low-Prandtl-number fluid flow driven by buoyancy force in a differentially heated enclosure using the single-relaxation-time thermal lattice Boltzmann method owing to the broad range of applications of convective-based problems in industry, such as melting processes as well as energy storage systems. In this study, a proper force term incorporated in the collision operator has been utilized for computer code convergence (especially for Prandtl numbers less than 0.71). The side walls of the geometry are maintained by constant temperatures, T h and T c , and the upper and lower walls are thermally insulated. The effects of Prandtl ( ) and Rayleigh numbers ( ) on the temperature fields, streamline functions, and average Nusselt number have been studied and found that at a given Prandtl number, the magnitude of vortices at the corner of the enclosure rises while those could disappear by Prandtl number increase. In addition, in the vicinity of hot and cold walls, the isotherms concentration increases due to rising temperature gradient and Prandtl number. The heat transfer coefficient grows with an increase in Ra and Pr numbers, experiencing a dramatic rise of 66.67% at the hot wall for Pr = 0.1. Similarly, the maximum velocity values near the cold wall rose by 185.71%. The suggested scheme has been validated by results shown in the literature, and excellent agreement has been found.

Abstract:The effects of MHD boundary layer flow of non-linear thermal radiation with convective heat transfer and non-uniform heat source/sink in presence of thermophortic velocity and chemical reaction investigated in this study. Suitable similarity transformation are used to solve the partial ordinary differential equation of considered governing flow. Runge-Kutta fourth fifth order Fehlberg method with shooting techniques are used to solved non-dimensional governing equations. The variation of different parameters such as thermophoretic parameter, chemical reaction parameter, non- uniform heat source/sink parameters are studied on velocity, temperature and concentration profiles, and are described by suitable graphs and tables. The obtained results are in very well agreement with previous results.

Abstract:In the present paper, the investigation to the mixed convective boundary-layer behavior over a horizontal plate is carried out. Abstract:A theoretical mathematical model has been proposed to analyze the combined heat and mass transfer impact due to peristaltic flow of Carreau-Yasuda nanofluid model. The flow is causing by non-uniform complex wavy channel with convergent and divergent characterization. The analysis is updated with applications of entropy generation applications. The investigation for enhancement in heat transfer is visualized by adopting the nonlinear radiated impact. Furthermore, the mixed convection and activation energy effects. Both surfaces of non-uniform channel are specified at distinct zeta potential. The utilization of governing theories along with the Poisson Boltzmann equation have been incorporated to model the problem. The simplification of problem is incorporated via Debye–Huckel linearization. The numerical method based on shooting technique is suggested to simulates the problem. The physical characteristics of flow problem in view of involved parameters is presented.
