Abstract:With the development of blue and white ceramics during the Ming and Qing Dynasties maritime ceramic culture grew rapidly.And the rising of Zhangzhou kilns was the typical example of this development.The rise of Zhangzhou kilns was the result of the moving of manufacturing of blue and white ceramics from inland Jingdezhen to the coastal areas of Fujian and Guangdong.The similarities of blue and white ceramic techniques between Zhangzhou and Jingdezhen were the evidence of the industrial shifting.The rise of Zhangzhou kilns was based on the maritime cultural and economic system of southeastern coast of China.The prosperity of the maritime social economy in Fujian and Guangdong with Yuegang as the centre and the gradual coming of Portuguese,Spanish and Dutch merchant ships were the extrinsic reasons of the rise.

Abstract:Abstract This paper offers a re-evaluation of the significance of porcelain during the Yuan dynasty by analyzing a type of ceramics known as luanbai or shufu wares. These matt white porcelains, sometimes inscribed with the characters shu and fu , have generally been seen as official wares, manufactured on the orders of the highest echelons of the Yuan central government and classified as high-quality luxury wares associated with the imperial court. This paper proposes that this conventional interpretation is misleading. Instead of understanding luanbai wares as part of the narrative of ceramics manufacture and the history of porcelain, I explore their relevance by situating them in the context of Yuan-dynasty material culture more broadly, court-sponsored craft manufactures, and the practice of inscribing objects. This approach reveals a different story, highlighting the absence of court control over ceramic production, the ensuing freedom to experiment locally with new ceramic production methods, and the significance of the demands of consumers in territories outside Yuan China.

Abstract:By analyzing the chromaticity values of the ancient blue-and-white porcelain combined with the imitated experiment, the color information is quantified and ‘color dispersion’ mechanism is clarified. Energy Dispersive X-Ray Fluorescence (EDXRF), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), the advanced focused ion beam transmission electron microscopy (FIB-TEM) technique, etc, were used to study the characteristics and the ‘color dispersion’ mechanism of the blue-and-white porcelain in Jingdezhen imperial kiln. The ‘color dispersion’ of the blue-and-white porcelain is mainly caused by Co-element structure stability, which is verified by the archaeological experiment results. Blue-and-white decoration lines diffusion length (named as ‘color dispersion’) are long (i.e. fuzzy) which has few or no spinel crystals in the body-glaze interaction layer of the blue-and-white porcelain. However, the blue and white porcelain with the clear lines has a large number of spinel crystals. The experimental results enrich the literature on the history of ceramic manufacturing techniques in Jingdezhen.

Abstract:In this case, electron probe microanalyzer (EPMA) and micro x‐ray fluorescence (μ‐XRF) techniques were employed to the analysis of white porcelain species artifacts unearthed from the Gangguantun Kiln (10–13th century) and investigate for its production processes' details by microanalysis. Microscopic observation reveals the presence of inclusions in the ceramic bodies across different historical periods, with notable disparities in the form and quantity of these inclusions between samples from distinct periods. By employing EPMA mapping and particle analysis, it was discerned that the inclusions in the late‐period white porcelain are primarily composed of calcium‐rich materials, exhibiting a uniform composition and structure. The uniformity in particle size distribution strongly suggests that these inclusions are temper with certain purpose, deliberately and intentionally introduced by skilled artisans following a controlled processing method. This discovery rectifies the previously held notion that the white porcelain products from the Gangguantun Kiln were rustic and coarse, with the "black iron spots" or other inclusion being viewed as impurities. Furthermore, these temper materials, likely treated before incorporation, may have played a role in enhancing the firing process of ceramics. This revelation sheds light on the distinctive technological aspects of ceramic craftsmanship during the Liao and Jin dynasty periods. It serves as a crucial reference for delving into the technical choices and integration within the handicraft industry of northern China during the Liao‐Jin era, as well as the unique regional characteristics and stylistic features of the period. This significantly enriches our comprehension of this historical era.

Abstract:Mi-se porcelain provided a step change in the history of Chinese porcelain making and influenced kiln production of later generations as well as the aesthetic orientation of society. This work compares the microstructure of ordinary Yue celadon and Mi-se porcelain. The Mi-se porcelain glaze was found to be simpler and more uniform than ordinary Yue celadon, with only some bubbles existing in the glaze. Compared with ordinary Yue celadon, the residual quartz and pores in the Mi-se porcelain body were smaller. Mi-se porcelain production is more standardized than ordinary Yue celadon. The presence of calcium phosphate in the glaze indicates that grass wood ash was used in the Yue kiln. Our research confirms that Mi-se porcelain was not the best porcelain as selected from the Yue kiln products, but it is a type of celadon that was specially fired using fine raw material processing and certain firing techniques.

Abstract:This paper reports some new results obtained by PIXE on Chinese ancient porcelain. The first results concern the provenance of blue and white porcelain made during the Tang Dynasty (AD618–907), which are the earliest products found in China. The PIXE experimental results show that they were fired in Huangye Kiln, Gongyi, Henan Province. The chemical composition of the body, white glaze and of the cobalt pigment will be reported. This paper also reports the results for early Chinese blue and white porcelain made under the Yuan dynasty (AD1206–1368) in Jingdezhen, Jiangxi Province. Experimental results show that the chemical composition of the cobalt pigment used by officers and popular are similar. These materials were imported from another country. The local asbolite was used as cobalt pigment material since the early Ming Dynasty (AD1368–1644) in Jingdezhen at folk kiln, and it was used at official kiln until the 16th century.

Abstract:Blue-and-white porcelain is a kind of famous underglaze color porcelain in Chinese ceramic history. In this paper, 13 pieces of blue-and-white porcelain shards collected in Beijing were adopted as samples. Microstructure characteristics and distributions of chemical elements were investigated. Quartz and mullite were the main crystalline phases in blue-and-white porcelain bodies. The column-like crystals in the glaze were anorthite crystals. Microstructures of interaction layers in the blue decorations could be divided into two categories with morphologically distinctive microstructures: column-like and flower-like structures. The coloring elements surrounded by dense anorthite crystals mainly concentrated in the center of interaction layers, and the cobalt blue pigments were identified as cobalt aluminate (CoAl2O4).

Abstract:Polarized light microscopy, thermal dilatometery and energy‐dispersive X‐ray fluorescence spectrometry (EDXRF) were conducted to analyse the microstructures, sintering temperature and chemical compositions of ancient porcelain glazes excavated from Fanchang kiln, China. The origin, development and decline of Fanchang bluish‐white porcelain were thoroughly investigated from the perspective of the formula and firing technology from the Five dynasties (907–906 CE) to the middle Northern Song dynasty (1015–1070 CE). The contents of major elements in glazes were compared with those of Ding, Yue, Qingshan and Hutian kilns over the same period. It was indicated that the glazes of Fanchang bluish‐white porcelain were prepared by mixing limestone and plant ashes into the 'glaze stone'. After the middle Northern Song, the content of limestone and plant ashes gradually increased, which was related to the change of raw materials and the formula technology. The glaze formula of Fanchang kiln was much closer to the southern kilns. Evidence revealed that Fanchang bluish‐white porcelains had reached a high firing level in the Five dynasties. At that time, the firing temperature was maintained in the range of 1100–1220°C, and their colour and texture showed at their best. In the middle Northern Song, the quality decreased as the firing temperature decreased, implying signals of a gradual decline.

The Issues of Museology

Abstract:In the two decades since the establishment of the people’s Republic of China, the challenges facing porcelain production have changed significantly. Porcelain production is one of the most important and oldest traditions in China. In the 1950s, porcelain craftsmen became involved in the creation of new forms of interior plastics. Many of the pieces they created are now part of museum collections and represent the history of the development of Chinese interior porcelain. Using the example of three museums and three reference monuments, the article examines the key trends in the development of porcelain art and stylistic changes that occurred during this period. The following museums have been selected as examples to showcase the specifics of Chinese porcelain art from this period: the China Ceramic and Porcelain Museum located in Jingdezhen City, which is the country’s first major art museum specializing in ceramics; the Chinese Fine Arts Museum in Beijing, which specializes in collecting, researching and displaying works of Chinese artists of modern and contemporary eras; and the Guangdong Folk Art Museum, which specializes in collecting, researching and displaying Chinese folk art. All of these museums are engaged in collecting porcelain, including interior porcelain plastics from the mid-20th century. In the collections of the aforementioned museums, three works were selected for analysis. These are three paired compositions created in the second half of the 1950s: the sculpture “An Old Man and a Child with a Peach” by Zeng Longsheng, “Good Aunt from the Commune” by Zhou Guozhen and “Fifteen coins. The rat case” by Lin Hongxi. These porcelain compositions reveal close relations with Chinese national culture and not only reflect various scenes, but are also aimed at expanding the role of porcelain in decorating residential interiors.

Abstract:Peacock green,sprinkle blue and melon green glazed porcelains have not been investigated scientifically due to lack of real object samples.However,recent archeological excavations in the Jindezhen Ming Dynasty royal porcelain site have yielded a great number of related research materials.In order to gain a better understanding of the nature of peacock green,sprinkle blue and melon green glazed porcelains and to provide information for their future protection,the samples dated to Xuande era of the Ming Dynasty from the Jingdezhen royal porcelain site have been analyzed microscopically,and by LA-ICP-AES,EDXRF and SEM.The surface morphology,corrosion phenomenon, glaze composition and elementary distribution have been analyzed.A makeup layer between the porcelain glaze and body was found and its composition characteristics are reported.In addition,processing of these highly alkaline porcelains,features of their glazes and corrosion mechanism are discussed.

Abstract:The celadon and white porcelains of Song dynasty in Henan province are classified to two types, Jingdezhen and Henan kilns. The Jingdezhen Type was input by trades between southern area to the Yangtz River and Central Plain, the porcelains were seen hardly in Henan province, which might be because of frequent wars and natural disasters. The productions of Henan kilns were influenced by Hutian Kiln of Jingdezhen and developed gradually, and at last formed its own characters.

Abstract:Yixing Kilns refer to the porcelain products as well as production facilities and techniques in Yixing area from the pre-Qin period through the Qing dynasty and even the contemporary time. The origin of Yixing Kilns may be dated to the Zhou times featuring primitive porcelains and patterned hard potteries. With the development in the Eastern Han through the Six Dynasties and the Tang, kilns in Yixing were capa-ble of celadon production although potteries were also manufactured. When it came to the Song, Yuan and Ming dynasties, Yixing Kilns gradually formed their production strength in pottery manufacture, from which, two major variety–the unglazed"purple clay craftsmanship"and the color-glazed"Jun pottery craftsman-ship"–were developed. In modern time, craftsmanship in celadon, purple clay and Jun pottery production receive revitalization while purple clay potteries enjoy the most prosperity.

Abstract:The rise of porcelain industry in northern China and the subsequent emergence of white porcelain production during the Northern dynasties (386–581 CE) played a pivotal role in shaping the historical trajectory of Chinese ceramics. Xing kiln is one of China's earliest and most representative white porcelain kilns. Herein, we investigated 23 porcelain sherds from the Neiqiu Xing kiln site during the late Northern dynasties and the early Sui dynasty (550–600 CE) from the perspective of firing temperature, firing atmosphere, and microstructure using a dilatometer, X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy. The results show that the early Xing porcelains were fired at high firing temperatures exceeding 1200°C with a reducing flame, and the adjustment of temperature promotes the emergence of early white porcelain. Moreover, the higher firing temperature of early Xing porcelain leads to the dominance of a glassy phase within the glaze, and the high bonding strength of the glaze and body caused by the body–glaze interaction layer formed with dense anorthite crystals. Overall, these findings provide valuable insights into the firing technology in the Xing kiln and even in North China during the late sixth century.

Abstract:The study aims to analyse the devitrification and multilayer structure of the glaze of the Zhangzhou export blue-and-white porcelain excavated from Nan’ao-I shipwreck in Shantou district, Guangdong province. Digital microscope, polarizing microscope and scanning electron microscope are applied to observe the glaze layer. X-ray Diffraction and X-ray Energy Dispersive Spectrometer are applied to analyse the chemical compositions of the glaze. Anorthite crystals are found in the outer glaze layer, which cause the decrease in transparency of the glaze. The appearance and chemical compositions of the multilayers of the glaze are different and cobalt pigments are located between the glaze layers. It is inferred that part of the 16th–17th century export blue-and-white porcelain produced by Zhangzhou kiln in Ming dynasty was glazed twice.

Abstract:In the scholarly exploration of Chinese ceramic history, the Yuan Dynasty emerges as a pivotal era, distinguished by its remarkable advancements in porcelain artistry, culminating in the mastery of porcelain craft. This period is notably marked by the emergence and refinement of underglaze red porcelain, a quintessential embodiment of Yuan ceramic excellence. The inception of underglaze red porcelain, a technique entailing the application of copper-containing colorant to porcelain before overlaying it with a transparent glaze and firing at temperatures exceeding 1350°C in a reducing kiln atmosphere, is historically attributed to the Yuan Dynasty. This technique, which flourished subsequently during the Ming and Qing Dynasties, represents a significant evolution in ceramic art. Each Chinese dynasty contributed uniquely to the ceramic arts, with the Yuan Dynasty particularly enhancing the underglaze red porcelain technique during its middle and late periods, as evidenced by the sophisticated coloration in surviving artifacts. This study aims to thoroughly examine the underglaze red porcelain of the Yuan Dynasty, highlighting its artistic uniqueness and exceptional craftsmanship. The paper commences with an overview of the Yuan Dynasty’s historical context—its political, economic, and cultural landscape—setting the stage for a deeper understanding of the underglaze red porcelain’s development. This is followed by an exploration of the porcelain’s creation process, including material selection and firing methods, to underscore the intricacies of its craftsmanship. Furthermore, a detailed analysis of the artistic and decorative elements of the underglaze red porcelain will be undertaken, focusing on aspects such as form, design motifs, and glaze hues, to unpack its stylistic and aesthetic dimensions. The culmination of this paper will be an evaluation of the historical significance and artistic merit of the Yuan Dynasty’s underglaze red porcelain, offering insights into its enduring legacy and influence on subsequent ceramic traditions. Through this comprehensive investigation, the study not only enriches our understanding of the Yuan Dynasty’s ceramic artistry but also underscores the importance of preserving and promoting traditional Chinese ceramic heritage. Abstract:Nanhai I shipwreck, a fully loaded merchant ship of the Southern Song Dynasty, once heading for the Southeast Asia, represents the prosperous international ceramic trades during that time. Recent excavation provides us with the great opportunity to investigate the export porcelain on this ship. Black Porcelain and green porcelain of Cizao kiln, white porcelain of Dehua kiln, bluish white porcelain of Jingdezhen kiln, celadon of Longquan kiln, and white porcelain of Minqing Yi kiln were analyzed chemically and morphologically by polarizing microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive spectroscopy. The chemical and microstructural features of each kind of porcelain, evidently different from each other, are discussed in detail in this paper. Among them, the Dehua white porcelain and the Jingdezhen bluish white porcelain may represent the best manufacture techniques for their purest glazes and bodies. Also, anorthite crystals are common in the calcium glazes of the Longquan celadon and the Jingdezhen bluish white porcelain. The most interesting structure among the samples observed is the structure of crystals and MgFe rich phase separation in the black glaze of Cizao porcelain, which is also different from other black glazes studied in previous research.
