Abstract:Based on the unbiased homogeneous CIV absorption line sample constructed in paper(I), we have carried out a statistical test and analysis. The results show that there is an apparent excess of associated absorption systems (defined as those with z abs ≲ z em , as Weymann et al. reported. This excess of associated CIV systems exists both in radio-loud and radio-quiet QSOs. But the excess seems to be dependent on the redshift. This is most likely a result of evolution of the interaction of QSOs, especially radio-loud QSOs, with their environment. Larger samples of high-redshift, radio-loud QSOs are necessary to confirm our result.

Abstract:We have developed a systematic method on the basis of statistical testing of hypotheses to deal with the problem of identification of absorption redshift systems in the spectra of highredshift QSOs. We have taken account of Bahcall's signal-to-noise ratio /1/. Our procedure consists of the following steps: 1) Set up the identification criteria. 2) Divide the whole redshift ranges into intervals, within each of which the composition of the “visible” set of reference lines is the same. Search on the computer the spectrum at a steplength Δz and count the number of systems supported by 1,2,3… identified lines. 3) For each visible set, calculate the probabilities of random identifications. 4) For each visible set, apply the statistical test to isolate the systems which are in the rejection region of the null-hypothesis. 5) Pick out those systems with high values of the signal-to-noise ratio from amongst the resulting systems in the last step. 6) Apply astrophysical considerations to the surviving systems. This last step will be discussed in a separate paper /10/.

Abstract:The properties of the Lyman-$\alpha$ absorptions observed in the spectra of QSOs are reviewed: the distribution of column densities and Doppler widths, the redshift evolution, the ``inverse effect'', the clustering. By interpreting the statistics of the line parameters insight is gained about the nature of the absorbers, their sizes, temperatures, confining agents. On the basis of the ``inverse effect'' it is possible to estimate the ultraviolet background radiation at high redshift and, linking this information with the limits on the Gunn-Peterson optical depth, the density of the diffuse part of the intergalactic medium is derived. Future prospects are briefly discussed.

Non-equilibrium effects on line-of-sight size estimates of QSO absorption systems

Abstract:Estimates of the linear extent of heavy-element absorption systems along the line-of-sight to a QSO often assume that the cloud is photoionized and that the temperature takes the equilibrium value where photo-heating balances line cooling. We show that rather small deviations from this photoionization equilibrium temperature caused by additional heating processes will lead to an overestimate of the neutral hydrogen fraction and thus to an underestimate of the thickness of the absorber by about two orders of magnitude. Such temperature deviations are indicated both by observations and numerical simulations. This interpretation reconciles the discrepancy between the rather small extent of heavy-element-absorption systems parallel to the line-of-sight obtained from a standard photoionization analysis and the much larger transverse sizes estimates inferred from the observation of common absorption in the spectra of close quasar pairs.

Exploring the Partially-obscured BLR and Partially-covered NLR

Abstract:We have conducted a series of investigations on the geometry of the reddening material in AGNs, which have important implications to the AGN unification and SMBH demography. According to our statistics of partially obscured quasars, we found that SMBHs in partially obscured type/phase (i.e., intermediate type) are at least as abundant as normal quasars in the local Universe; the reddening material in most objects are located in between the BLR and NLR. According to our comparison of narrow lines in type 1 and 2 AGNs, we found that for high-ionization or high-critical density narrow lines (e.g. OIII 5007, Balmer lines and FeII) a significant fraction of the emission arises from the inner dense part of the NLR; this inner NLR is located very close to the central engine and thus can be covered by the torus.

The metal systems in Q0000--2619 at high resolution

Abstract:We have obtained high, 11 and 14 \kms, and medium, 40 and 53 \kms, resolution spectra of the $z_{em} = 4.11$ quasar Q0000--2619 covering the range 4400 Å to 9265 Å. We identify nine metal absorption systems, of which four were previously known. A fifth previously suggested system at $z_{abs} \approx 3.409$ (Turnshek et al~ 1991) is ruled out by our data. Two of the eight systems for which the \lya~ line is in the observable range have a damped \lya~ line. Six of the nine systems show evidence for complex sub--component structure. At our resolution and S/N we identify a total of 21 sub--components in the nine systems. Five of the nine systems (11 of the 21 components) fall within the $\pm 5000$ \kms~ range of the emission redshift, and are hence classified as \zae~ absorbers. For the two damped systems we find metal abundances of $\leq 1$% and $\leq 8$% of solar values at redshifts of 3.0541 and 3.3901 respectively. These upper limits are consistent with what would be expected from previous determinations at lower redshifts, and our data are hence compatible with earlier conclusions that no evidence is yet found for chemical evolution of intervening damped and Lyman limit absorbers. For the \zae~ systems we found indications of metallicities comparable to, and even in excess of solar values. These much higher values compared to the damped systems, are in favour of the intrinsic hypothesis for these systems.

Spectroscopy of Broad Absorption Line Quasars at $3\lesssim Z \lesssim5$: Sample, Observations, and Results

Abstract:Our knowledge of high redshift, broad absorption line (BAL) quasars (QSOs) remains limited due to their apparent deficiency in the QSO population. We present an observational study of 22 BAL QSOs at $3\lesssim z \lesssim5$ based on optical/near-IR spectroscopy, which delivers the largest such sample ever studied in the redshift range. The near-IR spectroscopy covers the H$\beta$ and/or Mg II broad emission lines for these quasars, allowing us to estimate their central black hole (BH) masses in a robust way. In a subset consisting of seven strong BAL QSOs, we see the prevalence of weak [O III] emission and large C IV broad emission-line (BEL) blueshift ($\sim$3200 km s$^{-1}$). In another subset consisting of thirteen BAL QSOs having simultaneous observations in Mg II and H$\beta$, we found a strong correlation between 3000~\AA\ and 5000~\AA\ continuum luminosity, consistent with previous non-BAL QSO studies; however, there is no correlation between the FWHM of Mg II and H$\beta$, possibly due to the effects of strong nuclear outflows traced by BALs and/or C IV-BEL blueshifts. In combination with additional two low-ionization BAL (LoBAL) samples at $1<z<2.5$ and $0.5<z<1$, respectively, we investigate the cosmological evolution of the LoBAL population at $0.5\lesssim z\lesssim 5$. There is an increasing trend in Eddington ratio with increasing redshift, while the BH mass distribution appears to peak at $3<z<4$ in the augmented LoBAL sample, indicative of a "special" evolution phase, in which nuclear outflows may play an important role in shaping their broad/narrow emission-line regions as well as regulating the growth of their central BHs.

Abstract:The most accurate measurements in physical sciences will be precision spectroscopic experiments which are based on the usage of most narrow lines in cooperation with interference phenomena. We present a novel experimental observation of "a sharp absorption resonance line" with much more broad laser lights. The mechanism of such a novel phenomenon will be elucidated and its implications will be discussed.

Abstract:We assemble 3524 quasars from Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) with repeated observations to search for variations of narrow C IV1548,1551 and Mg II2796,2803 absorption doublets in spectral regions shortward of 7000 Ang at the observed frame, which corresponds to time-scales of about 150 ~ 2643 days at quasar rest frame. In these quasar spectra, we detect 3580 C IV absorption systems with z_{abs} = 1.5188 ~ 3.5212, and 1809 Mg II absorption systems with z_{abs} = 0.3948 ~ 1.7167. In term of the absorber velocity (beta) distribution at quasar rest frame, we find a substantial number of C IV absorbers with beta<0.06, which might be connected to the absorptions of quasar outflows. The outflow absorptions peak at v~2000 km/s and drop rapidly below the peak value. Among 3580 C IV absorption systems, 52 systems (~ 1.5%) show obvious variations in equivalent widths at the absorber rest frame (Wr): 16 enhanced, 16 emerged, 12 weaken, and 8 disappeared systems, respectively. We find that changes in Wr548 are neither related to time-scales of the two SDSS observations, nor to absorber velocities at the quasar rest frame. Variable absorptions in low-ionization species are important to constraint the physical conditions of absorbing gas. There are two variable Mg II absorption systems measured from SDSS spectra detected by Hacker et al. However, in our Mg II$ absorption sample, we find that neither shows variable absorption with confident levels of >4sigma for lambda2796 lines and >3sigma for lambda2803 lines.

Derivative Spectroscopy and its Application at Detecting the Weak Emission/Absorption Lines

Abstract:The development of spectroscopic survey telescopes like Large Sky Area Multi-Object Fiber Spectroscopic Telescope (LAMOST), Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment and Sloan Digital Sky Survey has opened up unprecedented opportunities for stellar classification. Specific types of stars, such as early-type emission-line stars and those with stellar winds, can be distinguished by the profiles of their spectral lines. In this paper, we introduce a method based on derivative spectroscopy (DS) designed to detect signals within complex backgrounds and provide a preliminary estimation of curve profiles. This method exhibits a unique advantage in identifying weak signals and unusual spectral line profiles when compared to other popular line detection methods. We validated our approach using synthesis spectra, demonstrating that DS can detect emission signals three times fainter than Gaussian fitting. Furthermore, we applied our method to 579,680 co-added spectra from LAMOST Medium-Resolution Spectroscopic Survey, identifying 16,629 spectra with emission peaks around the H{\alpha} line from 10,963 stars. These spectra were classified into three distinct morphological groups, resulting in nine subclasses as follows. (1) Emission peak above the pseudo-continuum line (single peak, double peaks, emission peak situated within an absorption line, P Cygni profile, Inverse P Cygni profile); (2) Emission peak below the pseudo-continuum line (sharp emission peak, double absorption peaks, emission peak shifted to one side of the absorption line); (3) Emission peak between the pseudo-continuum line.

Chemical Composition of Very High Redshift Qsos

Abstract:The emission lines of QSOs indicate the presence of a plethora of elemental species (Zheng et al. 1997). Hamann and Ferland (1993) have demonstrated that certain line ratios are dependent on relative elemental abundances. The chemical evolution of the QSO environment is linked to the relative abundances since the processes contributing to the production of different elements occur on various timescales (Wheeler et al. 1989). At very high redshifts, intervening gas turns the intergalactic medium (IGM) essentially opaque to wavelengths shortward of the Lyman limit but remains transparent for wavelengths longer than Lyman-alpha. This property of the IGM will allow the Next Generation Space Telescope (NGST) to use color selection criteria to determine high redshift QSO candidates. NGST will measure the unattenuated emission line strengths. Here we present a scenario of QSO abundance evolution of C, N, O, and Fe. The measured emission line strength ratios of these elements will allow NGST to constrain the parameters of chemical evolution and star formation in the QSO region.
A revision of the X-ray absorption nature of the BALQSOs

Abstract:Broad absorption line quasars (BALQSOs) are key objects for studying the structure and emission/absorption properties of AGN. However, despite their fundamental importance, the properties of BALQSOs are still not well understood. In order to investigate the X-ray nature of these sources, as well as the correlations between X-ray and rest-frame UV properties, we compile a large sample of 88 BALQSOs observed by XMM-Newton. We performed a full X-ray spectral analysis on a sample of 39 sources with higher X-ray spectral quality, and an approximate HR analysis on the remaining sources. Using available optical spectra, we calculate the BALnicity index and investigate the dependence between this optical parameter and different X-ray properties. Using the neutral absorption model, we found that 36% of our BALQSOs have NH < 5x10^21 cm^-2, lower than the expected X-ray absorption for such objects. However, when we used a physically-motivated model for the X-ray absorption in BALQSOs, i.e. ionized absorption, \sim 90% of the objects are absorbed. The absorption properties also suggest that LoBALs may be physically different objects from HiBALs. In addition, we report on a correlation between the ionized absorption column density and BAL parameters. There is evidence (at 98% level) that the amount of X-ray absorption is correlated with the strength of high-ionization UV absorption. This correlation, not previously reported, can be naturally understood in virtually all BALQSO models, as driven by the total amount of gas mass flowing towards the observer.

Abstract:Abstract The large scatter in Lyman-α opacity at z > 5.3 has been an ongoing mystery, prompting a flurry of numerical models. A uniform ultra-violet background has been ruled out at those redshifts, but it is unclear whether any proposed models produce sufficient inhomogeneities. In this paper we provide an update on the measurement which first highlighted the issue: Lyman-α effective optical depth along high-z quasar lines of sight. We nearly triple on the previous sample size in such a study thanks to the cooperation of the DES-VHS, SHELLQs, and SDSS collaborations as well as new reductions and spectra. We find that a uniform UVB model is ruled out at 5.1 < z < 5.3, as well as higher redshifts, which is perplexing. We provide the first such measurements at z ∼ 6. None of the numerical models we confronted to this data could reproduce the observed scatter.

Abstract:We present a detailed analysis of absorption systems along the line of sight towards QSO PKS 0237-233 using a high resolution spectrum of signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) ~ 60-80 obtained with the Ultraviolet and Visual Echelle Spectrograph mounted on the Very Large Telescope. This line of sight is known to show a remarkable overdensity of CIV systems that has been interpreted as revealing the presence of a supercluster of galaxies. A detailed analysis of each of these absorption systems is presented. In particular, for the z_abs = 1.6359 (with two components of logN(HI) = 18.45, 19.05) and z_abs = 1.6720 (logN(H I) = 19.78) sub-Damped Ly-alpha systems (sub-DLAs), we measure accurate abundances (resp. [O/H] = -1.63(0.07) and [Zn/H] = - 0.57(0.05) relative to solar). While the depletion of refractory elements onto dust grains in both sub-DLAs is not noteworthy, photoionization models show that ionization effects are important in a part of the absorbing gas of the sub-DLA at z_abs = 1.6359 (HI is 95 percent ionized) and in part of the gas of the sub-DLA at z_abs = 1.6359. The CIV clustering properties along the line of sight is studied in order to investigate the nature of the observed overdensity. We conclude that despite the unusually high number of CIV systems detected along the line of sight, there is no compelling evidence for the presence of a single unusual overdensity and that the situation is consistent with chance coincidence.

On the Origin of Intrinsic Narrow Absorption Lines in z<1 QSOs

Abstract:We present a statistical analysis of the associated, high ionization narrow absorption line (NAL) systems in a sample of 59 QSOs defined from the HST QSO Absorption Line Key Project. We have compiled the QSO luminosities at 2500 A, 5 GHz, and 2 keV, spectral indices at 2500 A and 5 GHz, the H-beta emission line FWHM, the CIV emission line FWHM, and the radio core fraction. We find 17 associated NALs toward 15 QSOs, of which ~10 are statistically expected to be intrinsic. From a multivariate clustering analysis, the QSOs seem to group together based primarily on radio luminosity, followed by radio spectral index, CIV emission line FWHM, and soft X-ray luminosity. Radio-loud QSOs which have compact radio morphologies, flat radio spectra, and mediocre CIV FWHM (<6000 km/s) do not have detectable associated NALs, down to REW(CIV)=0.35 A. We find that BALQSOs have an enhanced probability of hosting detectable NAL gas and that the velocities of associated NALs are peaked around the emission redshifts, rather than the systemic redshifts of the QSOs. There is only one strong NAL [REW(CIV)>1.5 A] in our low redshift sample which implies evolution in the number of strong NALs with redshift. We interpret these results in the context of an accretion-disk model. In this framework, we suggest that the observational clues result from differences in orientation and wind properties, the latter presumably associated with the QSO radio properties. (abridged)

Evidence for Photoionization Driven Broad Absorption Line Variability

Abstract:We present a qualitative analysis of the variability of quasar broad absorption lines using the large multi-epoch spectroscopic dataset of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 10. We confirm that variations of absorption lines are highly coordinated among different components of the same ion or the same absorption component of different ions for C IV, Si IV and N V. Furthermore, we show that the equivalent widths of the lines decrease or increase statistically when the continuum brightens or dims. This is further supported by the synchronized variations of emission and absorption line equivalent width, when the well established intrinsic Baldwin effect for emission lines is taken into account. We find that the emergence of an absorption component is usually accompanying with dimming of the continuum while the disappearance of an absorption line component with brightening of the continuum. This suggests that the emergence or disappearance of a C IV absorption component is only the extreme case, when the ionic column density is very sensitive to continuum variations or the continuum variability amplitude is larger. These results support the idea that absorption line variability is driven mainly by changes in the gas ionization in response to continuum variations, that the line-absorbing gas is highly ionized, and in some extreme cases, too highly ionized to be detected in UV absorption lines. Due to uncertainties in the spectroscopic flux calibration, we cannot quantify the fraction of quasars with asynchronized continuum and absorption line variations.

On the Nature of the C IV-bearing Circumgalactic Medium at z~1

Abstract:This paper presents a detailed study of the physical properties of seven C IV absorbers identified at z_abs = 0.68-1.28 along the line of sight toward QSO PG 1522+101 (z_QSO = 1.330). The study leverages high-quality QSO spectra from HST COS and STIS, and Keck HIRES to resolve component structures and to constrain the gas density and elemental abundances of individual components. Under the assumption of photoionization equilibrium (PIE), five of the 12 C IV components require a mixture of high- and low-density phases to fully explain the observed relative abundances between low-, intermediate-, and high-ionization species. In addition, galaxy surveys carried out using VLT MUSE and Magellan LDSS3C are utilized to characterize the galaxy environments. The results of this analysis are summarized as follows: (1) no luminous galaxies (> 0.1 L*) are found within 100 kpc in projected distance from the C IV absorbers; (2) the C IV selection preferentially targets high-metallicity (near solar) and chemically-evolved gas (~ solar [C/O] elemental abundances) in galaxy halos; (3) the observed narrow line widths of individual C IV components, places a stringent limit on the gas temperature (< 5e4 K) and supports a photoionization origin; (4) additional local ionizing sources beyond the UV ionizing background may be necessary for at least one absorber based on the observed deficit of He I relative to H I; and (5) a PIE assumption may not apply when the gas metallicity exceeds the solar value and the component line width implies a warmer temperature than expected from PIE models.
