Abstract:We present a statistical analysis of the associated, high ionization narrow absorption line (NAL) systems in a sample of 59 QSOs defined from the HST QSO Absorption Line Key Project. We have compiled the QSO luminosities at 2500 A, 5 GHz, and 2 keV, spectral indices at 2500 A and 5 GHz, the H-beta emission line FWHM, the CIV emission line FWHM, and the radio core fraction. We find 17 associated NALs toward 15 QSOs, of which ~10 are statistically expected to be intrinsic. From a multivariate clustering analysis, the QSOs seem to group together based primarily on radio luminosity, followed by radio spectral index, CIV emission line FWHM, and soft X-ray luminosity. Radio-loud QSOs which have compact radio morphologies, flat radio spectra, and mediocre CIV FWHM (<6000 km/s) do not have detectable associated NALs, down to REW(CIV)=0.35 A. We find that BALQSOs have an enhanced probability of hosting detectable NAL gas and that the velocities of associated NALs are peaked around the emission redshifts, rather than the systemic redshifts of the QSOs. There is only one strong NAL [REW(CIV)>1.5 A] in our low redshift sample which implies evolution in the number of strong NALs with redshift. We interpret these results in the context of an accretion-disk model. In this framework, we suggest that the observational clues result from differences in orientation and wind properties, the latter presumably associated with the QSO radio properties. (abridged)

Mid-infrared Spectral Properties of Post-Starburst Quasars

Abstract:We present Spitzer InfraRed Spectrograph (IRS) low-resolution spectra of 16 spectroscopically selected post-starburst quasars (PSQs) at z ~ 0.3. The optical spectra of these broad-lined active galactic nuclei (AGNs) simultaneously show spectral signatures of massive intermediate-aged stellar populations making them good candidates for studying the connections between AGNs and their hosts. The resulting spectra show relatively strong polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) emission features at 6.2 and 11.3\micron and a very weak silicate feature, indicative of ongoing star formation and low dust obscuration levels for the AGNs. We find that the mid-infrared composite spectrum of PSQs has spectral properties between ULIRGs and QSOs, suggesting that PSQs are hybrid AGN and starburst systems as also seen in their optical spectra. We also find that PSQs in early-type host galaxies tend to have relatively strong AGN activities, while those in spiral hosts have stronger PAH emission, indicating more star formation.

The Timescale-Dependent Color Variability of Quasars Viewed with GALEX

Abstract:In recent work done by Sun et. al., the color variation of quasars, namely the bluer-when-brighter trend, was found to be timescale-dependent using SDSS $g/r$ band light curves in the Stripe 82. Such timescale dependence, i.e., bluer variation at shorter timescales, supports the thermal fluctuation origin of the UV/optical variation in quasars, and can be well modeled with the inhomogeneous accretion disk model. In this paper, we extend the study to much shorter wavelengths in the rest frame (down to extreme UV), using GALaxy Evolution eXplorer (GALEX) photometric data of quasars collected in two ultraviolet bands (near-UV and far-UV). We develop Monte-Carlo simulations to correct possible biases due to the considerably larger photometric uncertainties in GALEX light curves (particularly in far-UV, comparing with SDSS $g/r$ bands), which otherwise could produce artificial results. We securely confirm the previously discovered timescale dependence of the color variability with independent datasets and at shorter wavelengths. We further find the slope of the correlation between the amplitude of color variation and timescale however appears even steeper than that predicted by the inhomogeneous disk model, which assumes that disk fluctuations follow damped random walk process. In line with the much flatter structure function observed in far-UV comparing with that at longer wavelengths, this implies deviation from DRW process in the inner disk where rest frame extreme UV radiation is produced.

The Physical Connections among Infrared QSOs, Palomar‐Green QSOs, and Narrow‐Line Seyfert 1 Galaxies

Abstract:We study the properties of infrared- selected QSOs ( IR QSOs), optically selected Palomar- Green QSOs ( PGQSOs), and narrow- line Seyfert 1 galaxies ( NLS1s). We compare their properties from the IR to the optical and examine various correlations among the black hole mass, accretion rate, star formation rate, and optical and IR luminosities. We find that the IR excess in IR QSOs is mostly in the far- IR, and their IR spectral indices suggest that the excess emission is from low- temperature dust heated by starbursts rather than active galactic nuclei ( AGNs). The IR excess is therefore a useful criterion to separate the relative contributions of starbursts and AGNs. We further find a tight correlation between the star formation rate and the accretion rate of central AGNs for IR QSOs. The ratio of the star formation rate and the accretion rate is about several hundred for IR QSOs but decreases with the central black hole mass. This shows that the tight correlation between the stellar mass and the central black hole mass is preserved in massive starbursts during violent mergers. We suggest that the higher Eddington ratios of NLS1s and IR QSOs imply that they are in the early stage of evolution toward classical Seyfert 1 galaxies and QSOs, respectively.
UNVEILING THE INTRINSIC X-RAY PROPERTIES OF BROAD ABSORPTION LINE QUASARS WITH A RELATIVELY UNBIASED SAMPLE

Abstract:There is growing evidence of a higher intrinsic fraction of broad absorption line quasars (BALQSOs) than that obtained in optical surveys, on which most previous X-ray studies of BALQSOs have focused. Here we present Chandra observations of 18 BALQSOs at z similar to 2, selected from a near-infrared (Two Micron All Sky Survey) sample, where the BALQSO fraction is likely to be close to the intrinsic fraction. We measure photon indices using the stacked spectra of the optically faint (i - K-s >= 2.3 mag) and optically bright (i - K-s < 2.3 mag) samples to be Gamma similar or equal to 1.5-2.1. We constrain their intrinsic column density by modeling the X-ray fractional hardness ratio, finding a mean column density of 3.5 x 10(22) cm(-2) assuming neutral absorption. We incorporate Sloan Digital Sky Survey optical measurements (rest frame UV) to study the broadband spectral index between the X-ray and UV bands, and compare this to a large sample of normal quasars. We estimate that the optically faint BALQSOs are X-ray weaker than the optically bright ones, and the entire sample of BALQSOs are intrinsically X-ray weak when compared to normal active galactic nuclei (AGNs). Correcting for magnification of X-ray emission via gravitational lensing by the central black hole viewed at large inclination angles makes these BALQSOs even more intrinsically X-ray weak. Finally, we estimate AGN kinetic feedback efficiencies of a few percent for an X-ray wind of 0.3c in high-ionization BALQSOs. Combined with energy carried by low-ionization BALQSOs and UV winds, the total kinetic energy in BALQSOs can be sufficient to provide AGN kinetic feedback required to explain the co-evolution between black holes and host galaxies.
Exploratory Study of the X-Ray Properties of Quasars With Intrinsic Narrow Absorption Lines

Abstract:We have used archival Chandra and XMM-Newton observations of quasars hosting intrinsic narrow UV absorption lines (intrinsic NALs) to carry out an exploratory survey of their X-ray properties. Our sample consists of three intrinsic-NAL quasars and one "mini-BAL" quasar, plus four quasars without intrinsic absorption lines for comparison. These were drawn in a systematic manner from an optical/UV-selected sample. The X-ray properties of intrinsic-NAL quasars are indistinguishable from those of "normal" quasars. We do not find any excess absorption in quasars with intrinsic NALs, with upper limits of a few times 10^22 cm^-2. We compare the X-ray and UV properties of our sample quasars by plotting the equivalent width and blueshift velocity of the intrinsic NALs and the X-ray spectral index against the "optical-to-X-ray" slope, alpha-ox. When BAL quasars and other AGNs with intrinsic NALs are included, the plots suggest that intrinsic-NAL quasars form an extension of the BAL sequences and tend to bridge the gap between BAL and "normal" quasars. Observations of larger samples of intrinsic-NAL quasars are needed to verify these conclusions. We also test two competing scenarios for the location of the NAL gas in an accretion-disk wind. Our results strongly support a location of the NAL gas at high latitudes above the disk, closer to the disk axis than the dense BAL wind. We detect excess X-ray absorption only in Q0014+8118, which does not host intrinsic NALs. The absorbing medium very likely corresponds to an intervening system at z=1.1, which also produces strong absorption lines in the rest-frame UV spectrum of this quasar. In the appendix we discuss the connection between UV and X-ray attenuation and its effect on alpha-ox.

Associated Absorption Lines in the Radio-Loud Quasar 3C 351: Far-Ultraviolet Echelle Spectroscopy from the Hubble Space Telescope

Abstract:As one of the most luminous radio-loud quasars showing intrinsic ultraviolet (UV) and X-ray absorption, 3C 351 provides a laboratory for studying the kinematics and physical conditions of such ionized absorbers. We present an analysis of the intrinsic absorption lines in the high-resolution ($\sim$ 7 km/s) far-UV spectrum which was obtained from observations with the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) on board the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). The spectrum spans wavelengths from 1150 Åto 1710 Å, and shows strong emission lines from O VI and Ly$\alpha$. Associated absorption lines are present on the blue wings of the high-ionization emission doublets O VI $\lambda\lambda$ 1032,1038 and N V $\lambda\lambda$ 1238,1242, as well as the Lyman lines through Ly$\epsilon$. These intrinsic absorption features are resolved into several distinct kinematic components, covering rest-frame velocities from -40 to -2800 km/s, with respect to the systemic redshift of $z_{em}=0.3721$. For the majority of these absorption line regions, strong evidence of partial covering of both the background continuum source and the BELR is found, which supports the intrinsic absorption origin and rules out the possibility that the absorption arises in some associated cluster of galaxies. The relationship between the far-UV absorbers and X-ray `warm' absorbers are studied with the assistance of photoionization models. Most of the UV associated absorption components have low values of the ionization parameter and total hydrogen column densities, which is inconsistent with previous claims that the UV and X-ray absorption arises in the same material. Analysis of these components supports a picture with a wide range of ionization parameters, temperatures, and column densities in AGN outflows.

Abstract:We analyse mid-infrared (MIR) spectroscopic properties for 19 ultra-luminous infrared quasars (IR QSOs) in the local universe based on the spectra from the Infrared Spectrograph on board the Spitzer Space Telescope. The MIR properties of IR QSOs are compared with those of optically-selected Palomar-Green QSOs (PG QSOs) and ultra-luminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs). The average MIR spectral features from similar to 5 to 30 mu m, including the spectral slopes, 6.2 mu m PAH emission strengths and [NeII] 12.81 mu m luminosities of IR QSOs, differ from those of PG QSOs. In contrast, IR QSOs and ULIRGs have comparable PAH and [NeII] luminosities. These results are consistent with IR QSOs being at a transitional stage from ULIRGs to classical QSOs. We also find the correlation between the EW (PAH 6.2 mu m) and outflow velocities suggests that star formation activities are suppressed by feedback from AGNs and/or supernovae.
The multiwavelength properties of red QSOs -- Evidence for dusty winds as the origin of QSO reddening

Abstract:Fundamental differences in the radio properties of red quasars (QSOs), as compared to blue QSOs, have been recently discovered, positioning them as a potential key population in the evolution of galaxies and black holes across cosmic time. To elucidate their nature, we exploited a rich compilation of photometry and spectroscopic data to model their spectral energy distributions (SEDs) from the UV to the FIR and characterise their emission-line properties. Following a systematic comparison approach, we infer the AGN accretion, obscuration, and host galaxy properties in a sample of ~1800 QSOs at 0.2<z<2.5, classified into red and control QSOs and matched in redshift and luminosity. We find no differences in the average SEDs of red and control QSOs, other than the reddening of the accretion disk expected by the selection. Moreover, no clear link can be recognised between the QSO reddening and the interstellar medium or the star formation properties of their host galaxies. We find that the torus properties in red and control QSOs are strikingly similar, suggesting that the reddening is not related to the torus and orientation effects. Interestingly, we detect a significant excess of infrared emission at rest-frame 2-5 um, which shows a direct correlation with optical reddening. To explain its origin, we investigated the presence of outflow signatures in the QSO spectra, discovering a higher incidence of broad [OIII] wings and high CIV velocity shifts (>1000 km/s) in red QSOs. We find that red QSOs that exhibit evidence for high-velocity winds present a stronger signature of the infrared excess, suggesting a causal connection between reddening and the presence of hot dust in QSO winds. We propose that dusty winds at nuclear scales are potentially the physical ingredient responsible for the colours in red QSOs, as well as a key parameter for the regulation of accretion material in the nucleus.

Correlations between the [Ne ii] 12.81 μm and PAH 6.2 μm luminosities and those between the [Ne ii], PAH with 60 μm luminosities for ULIRGs and IR QSOs indicate that both [Ne ii] and PAH luminosities are approximate star‐formation rate indicators for IR QSOs and starburst‐dominated galaxies; the scatters are, however, quite large (∼0.7–0.8 dex). Finally, the correlation between the equivalent widths (EW; PAH 6.2 μm) and outflow velocities suggests that star‐formation activities are suppressed by feedback from AGNs and/or supernovae.

Abstract:Intrinsic absorbers are significant components of AGN environments that provide valuable information and interesting challenges. We present a very brief (and biased, and sometimes speculative) overview of intrinsic absorbers from the perspective of different absorption line classes. We also discuss ways of addressing and learning from the "problem" of partial coverage of the background light source, with some examples based on new high-resolution rest-frame UV spectra of quasars.

Abstract:Although absorbed quasars are extremely important for our understanding of the energetics of the Universe, the main physical parameters of their central engines are still poorly known. In this work we present and study a complete sample of 14 quasars (QSOs) that are absorbed in the X-rays (column density NH>4x10^21 cm-2 and X-ray luminosity L(2-10 keV)>10^44 ergs/s; XQSO2) belonging to the XMM-Newton Bright Serendipitous Survey (XBS). From the analysis of their ultraviolet-to-mid-infrared spectral energy distribution we can separate the nuclear emission from the host galaxy contribution, obtaining a measurement of the fundamental nuclear parameters, like the mass of the central supermassive black hole and the value of Eddington ratio, lambda_Edd. Comparing the properties of XQSO2s with those previously obtained for the X-ray unabsorbed QSOs in the XBS, we do not find any evidence that the two samples are drawn from different populations. In particular, the two samples span the same range in Eddington ratios, up to lambda_Edd=0.5; this implies that our XQSO2s populate the "forbidden region" in the so-called "effective Eddington limit paradigm". A combination of low grain abundance, presence of stars inwards of the absorber, and/or anisotropy of the disk emission, can explain this result.

Molecular Gas in Infrared-Excess, Optically-Selected QSOs and the Connection with Infrared Luminous Galaxies

Abstract:The initial results of a millimeter (CO) survey of infrared-excess, optically-selected quasars from the Palomar-Green (PG) Bright Quasar Survey (BQS) with redshifts in the range 0.04 < z < 0.17 are presented. These observations represent the first step towards establishing with a complete sample whether or not quasi-stellar objects (QSOs) reside in molecular gas-rich galaxies, as well as towards determining how the infrared and molecular gas properties of QSOs compare with those of ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIGs), which are a possible evolutionary precursor of QSOs. The sample consists of QSOs having absolute blue magnitudes, M_B <~ -22.0, and infrared excesses, L_IR (8-1000 um) /L_bbb (0.1-1.0 um) >0.36, where the contribution to the bolometric luminosity of infrared thermal dust emission for all PG QSOs is typically 20--40%. Six out of 10 of the QSOs observed are detected in the CO(1-0) emission line; two detections confirm previous, less sensitive detections of CO(1-0) in PG 1613+658 and PG 0838+770, and four additional QSOs are detected for the first time (PG 1119+120, PG 1351+640, PG 1415+451, and PG 1440+356). These six detections, plus two previous detections of CO in IZw1 and Mrk 1014, bring the total number of 0.04 < z < 0.17 infrared-excess PG QSOs detected in CO to date to eight, and provide possible evidence that, in addition to fueling star formation, molecular gas may also serve as a primary source of fuel for QSO activity...

On the absorption of X-ray bright broad absorption line quasars

Abstract:Most X-ray studies of BALQSOs found significant (N_H~10^{22-24} cm^{-2}) intrinsic column densities of gas absorbing an underlying typical power-law continuum emission, in agreement with expectations from radiatively driven accretion disk wind models. However, direct spectral analysis was performed only on a limited number of bright sources. We investigate the X-ray emission of a large BALQSO sample at medium to high redshift (0.8<z<3.7), drawn from the cross-correlation of SDSS DR5 and 2XMM catalogs. We perform on it moderate-quality X-ray spectral and hardness ratio analysis, and X-ray/optical photometry. No or little intrinsic X-ray neutral absorption is found for one third of the spectroscopically analyzed BALQSO sample (N_H < 4 x 10^{21} cm^{-2} at 90% confidence level), and lower than typical X-ray absorption is found in the remaining sources (<N_H> ~ 5 x 10^{22} cm^{-2}) even including the faintest sources analyzed through hardness ratio analysis. The mean photon index is Gamma~1.9, with no significant evolution with redshift. The alpha_ox are typical of radio-quiet broad line AGN, in contrast with the known (from previous X-ray studies) ``soft X-ray weakness'' of BALQSOs and in agreement with the lack of X-ray absorption. We found the low-Absorption Index (AI) subsample to host the lowest X-ray absorbing column densities of the entire sample. X-ray selected BALQSOs show lower X-ray absorption than purely optically selected ones, and soft X-ray weakness does not hold for any of them. Their outflows may be launched by different mechanisms than classical soft X-ray weak BALQSOs or they may be the tail of the already known population seen along a different line of sight, in both cases expanding the observational parameter space for their search and investigation.

Abstract:We present new spectroscopy of the z=3.62 gravitationally lensed quasar B1422+117 from the Gemini North GMOS integral field spectrograph. We observe significant differential magnifications between the broad emission lines and the continuum, as well as across the velocity structure of the Lyman-alpha line. We take advantage of this differential microlensing to algebraically decompose the quasar spectrum into the absorbed broad emission line and absorbed continuum components. We use the latter to derive the intrinsic Ly-alpha forest absorption spectrum. The proximity effect is clearly detected, with a proximity zone edge of 8.6-17.3 Mpc from the quasar, implying (perhaps intermittent) activity over at least 28 Myrs. The Ly-alpha line profile exhibits a blue excess that is inconsistent with a symmetric fit to the unabsorbed red side. This has important implications for the use of this fitting technique in estimating the absorbed blue Ly-alpha wings of Gunn-Peterson trough quasars.

Keck High Resolution Spectroscopy of PKS 0123+257: Intrinsic Absorption in a Radio Loud Quasar

Abstract:We present results from Keck I high resolution spectroscopy of the radio loud quasar PKS 0123+257 ($z_e$=2.364, V=17.5). In this object we detect Ly$\alpha$, N V 1238,1242, Si IV 1393,1402, and C IV 1548,1550 in an absorption system at a redshift of 2.369. The Ly$\alpha$ line has a square- bottomed profile suggesting a high column density of gas, yet the line does not reach zero intensity. The resolved C IV doublet ratio also clearly demonstrates that the absorbing clouds at this redshift do not fully occult the background light source along our line-of-sight. The absorption lines are positioned near the centers of the broad emission- lines and the coverage fraction of the strongest absorption lines varies inversely proportionally with the strength of the corresponding emission lines. This implies that although the absorption-line region may obscure the continuum source, it does not completely occult the broad emission-line region. This effect suggests that the lines are formed close to the QSO central region. A model is proposed in which the apparent coverage fraction derived for the weaker absorption lines may vary with the column density of the lines. Broad absorption-lines (which are known to be intrinsic) are found nearly exclusively in radio-quiet objects. Intrinsic narrow absorption lines have previously been found in radio quiet QSOs; it is therefore significant that an intrinsic absorption system has been verified in a radio loud quasar.

CIV Emission and the Ultraviolet through X-ray Spectral Energy Distribution of Radio-Quiet Quasars

Abstract:In the restframe UV, two of the parameters that best characterize the range of emission-line properties in quasar broad emission-line regions are the equivalent width and the blueshift of the CIV line relative to the quasar rest frame. We explore the connection between these emission-line properties and the UV through X-ray spectral energy distribution (SED) for radio-quiet (RQ) quasars. Our sample consists of a heterogeneous compilation of 406 quasars from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey and Palomar-Green survey that have well-measured CIV emission-line and X-ray properties (including 164 objects with measured Gamma). We find that RQ quasars with both strong CIV emission and small CIV blueshifts can be classified as "hard-spectrum" sources that are (relatively) strong in the X-ray as compared to the UV. On the other hand, RQ quasars with both weak CIV emission and large CIV blueshifts are instead "soft-spectrum" sources that are (relatively) weak in the X-ray as compared to the UV. This work helps to further bridge optical/soft X-ray "Eigenvector 1" relationships to the UV and hard X-ray. Based on these findings, we argue that future work should consider systematic errors in bolometric corrections (and thus accretion rates) that are derived from a single mean SED. Detailed analysis of the CIV emission line may allow for SED-dependent corrections to these quantities.

Broad Absorption Line Quasars and the Radio-Loud/Radio-Quiet Dichotomy

Abstract:The observation that the extremely broad, blueshifted absorption troughs which characterize broad absorption line quasars (BALQs) occur exclusively in radio-quiet quasars (RQQs) suggests that this class of active galactic nuclei (AGN) may offer important clues to the radio-loud/radio-quiet (RL/RQ) dichotomy in quasars. Interestingly, there is also substantial observational evidence for similar, but lower velocity intrinsic absorption outflows in some Seyferts and radio-loud quasars (RLQs) as well. Theoretically, however, it is difficult to interpret this broad range of mass ejection phenomena in the context of the standard model for BALQs. Thus, a new model is considered here in which the thermal gas producing the blueshifted absorption troughs is associated with a poorly collimated outflow of weakly radio-emitting plasma -- in essence, a weak jet. This model provides an appropriate framework not only for assessing the possible connection between the BAL phenomenon in RQQs and related intrinsic absorption outflows in stronger radio sources and in less luminous sources, both of which are known to possess jet-like radio structure, but also for understanding the RL/RQ dichotomy in light of recent observations which indicate that at least some RQQs possess central engines that are capable of producing weak versions of the powerful radio jets characteristic of RLQs.

Abstract:ABSTRACT A major prediction of most super-Eddington accretion theories is the presence of anisotropic emission from supercritical discs, but the degree of anisotropy and its dependence on energy remain poorly constrained observationally. A key breakthrough allowing to test such predictions was the discovery of high-excitation photoionized nebulae around ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs). We present efforts to tackle the degree of anisotropy of the ultraviolet/extreme ultraviolet (UV/EUV) emission in super-Eddington accretion flows by studying the emission-line nebula around the archetypical ULX NGC 1313 X–1. We first take advantage of the extensive wealth of optical/near-UV and X-ray data from Hubble Space Telescope, XMM–Newton, Swift X-ray telescope, and NuSTAR observatories to perform multiband, state-resolved spectroscopy of the source to constrain the spectral energy distribution (SED) along the line of sight. We then compare spatially resolved cloudy predictions using the observed line-of-sight SED with the nebular line ratios to assess whether the nebula ‘sees’ the same SED as observed along the line of sight. We show that to reproduce the line ratios in the surrounding nebula, the photoionizing SED must be a factor of ≈4 dimmer in UV emission than along the line of sight. Such nearly iosotropic UV emission may be attributed to the quasi-spherical emission from the wind photosphere. We also discuss the apparent dichotomy in the observational properties of emission-line nebulae around soft and hard ULXs, and suggest that only differences in mass-transfer rates can account for the EUV/X-ray spectral differences, as opposed to inclination effects. Finally, our multiband spectroscopy suggests that the optical/near-UV emission is not dominated by the companion star.
