The New Round of Urbanization should Provide Great Opportunities and Challenges for Healthy Growth of China’s economy

Abstract:Chinese Government has begun to promote a larger 10-year plan which aims for boosting domestic economic growth, set the urbanization rate as 70% in the next decade and will bring many challenges and opportunities for China's economic growth. This paper reviews the development of urbanization since 1949, briefly sums up experiences and lessons of the past three urbanizations and points out that the urbanization should have an urbanization strategy suitable to conditions, take advantage of an opportunities and avoid the social and economic dramatic change and loss that is caused by artificial urbanization. This paper analyzes the eight aspects of the new round of urbanization and their opportunities and challenges. These eight aspects include: land; household registration; housing; environment;urban transport; urban employment and industry; urban public services; the cost of farmers' becoming citizens. Since the government launched out into ambitious urbanization, the biggest challenge of urbanization is the government itself while its biggest opportunity is the rise of a large number of emerging cities in China. The limited data analysis and basic ideas of this paper will be helpful for understanding China's economic transformation.
