A Comparative Study on Three Kinds of Waist Circumference Measure Methods

Abstract:Objective To compare child and adolescent waist circumference measurement results by 3 kinds of measure methods(1,tape placed horizontally at the level of 1 cm above umbilicus;2,tape placed midway between the lower rib margin and iliac crest at the minimum circumference;3,tape placed and at the level of umbilicus),and to provide basis for child and adolescent waist circumference measure method research.Methods Measure waist circumference of 196 grade 6 primary school students from 2 primary school in Beijing by 3 kinds of measure methods mentioned above,and 72 overweight students by eye surveying were measured by bioelectrical impedence test for percent body fat and abdominal obesity status.Results There were significant differences between three kinds of measurements(P<0.05).The first measure method standard deviation was maximum.The coefficient of variation showed that the second measure method differential validity was maximum,and the first method followed.The waist-to-hip ratio outcome by the second measure method was nearest to outcome by bioelectrical impedence test,and the first method followed.The first measure method had the highest correlation with abdominal obesity,and the third method followed.The third measure method had the highest correlation with percent body fat,and the first method followed.Conclusion The first measure method is optimization in reflecting abdominal obesity and comprehensiveness.
