Abstract:Germplasm resource is a material basis of variety breeding.In recent years,much key progress has been made in the researches on apricot germplasm resources at home and abroad.In order to effectively protect and reasonably utilize current apricot germplasm resources and effectively carry out researches on apricot breeding projects,the main research results and advances on preservation status,evaluation and identification of apricot germplasm resource were reviewed,as well as the aspects of fingerprints construction,new varieties test,classification of Armeniaca plants,genetic relationships between germplasm resources,construction of core germplasms,and so on.The conclusions were put forward,including the researches on genetic were far insufficient,and disagreements still existed in the issues of their genetic relationships and systematic classification,the research data on apparent characteristics and those at molecular level could not be effectively interconnected and their correlation levels were not high enough.With completing whole genome sequencing of stone fruit plants,unprecedented chances would come in the researches on apricot germplasm resources.

Abstract:It was reviewed that the achievements in aspect of Pyrus resources and breeding had been obtained since the Foundation of the People’s Rublic of China,including germplasm resources collection,preservation,evaluation,origin,evolution and utilization,cultivar introduction,selection of bud mutation,seedling selection,hybridization selection,mutation breeding,space breeding,rootstock breeding,research of genetic regularity,in vitro culture,genetic engineering,molecular marker,construction of genetic linkage map etc.It was suggested that the core germplasm collection and evaluation should be strengthened,the new cultivar with intellectual property right,high quality,resistance to disease and insect,high stress resistance,self-fruiting,labor saving and bright appearance should be developed.Moreover,attention also should be paid on integrating pear breeding materials,emphasizing cooperation,and innovating breeding techniques to improve breeding efficiency.

Abstract:With some technological breakthroughs such as sequencing and microarray in the recent years, genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, metabolomics and phenomics have made a great progress in the world. Theories and technologies of crop breeding have also been revolutionarized considerably. Traditional crop breeding is based on phenotypic selection, which is often called "empirical breeding" with poor predictability, long breeding cycle and low breeding efficiency. Modern crop molecular breeding including marker-assisted breeding, transgenic breeding and molecular design breeding has become an important direction in the field of plant breeding. It is based on the combination of genotypic selection and phenotypic selection and thus target genes/alleles can be directly selected and pyramided. Therefore, the efficiency of molecular breeding can be improved and the breeding duration can be shortened. The paper defines the concept of molecular breeding, briefly analyzes current status and issues of crop molecular breeding in China, and discusses strategies in the future.

Abstract:China is the birthplace of peach [Prunus persica (L.) Batsch.].On the basis of the productive status of peach, its geographical distribution, biological characteristics, and ecological relations, China can be divided into five regions suitable for peach cultivation: the northwest drought plateau; the north China plain; the Changjiang River valley; the Yunnan-Kuizhou plateau and the Qinghai-Xizang frigid plateau; and two suitable subregions: the northeast frigid plateau and the south China subtropical region (Wang Zuhua et al., 1990a).Through the ages, rich and special cultivars (or strains) have been developed as the result of domestication and cultivation (Li Zai-Long, 1984).According to their fruit characteristics, peach cultivars can be classified into six groups: crisp (Ying-Rou-Tao); honey (Mi-Tao); juicy (Shui-Mi-Tao); flat (Pan-Tao); the nectarine (You-Tao) and yellow peach (Huang-Tao) (Wang Zuhua et al., 1990b).Peach improvement had been carried out unconsciously long before 1949 in China (Shen Dexu, 1980).In the 1950s, general investigations of peach germplasm were conducted throughout the country, and excellent cultivars became available for local peach production (Yu Chengzhe and Zong Xuepu, 1980).In the northwest, north, and east of China, several foreign cultivars (mostly from Japan) were introduced and used successfully (Wang Zuhua et al., 1989).Meanwhile, Chinese peach breeders engaged mainly in selecting better strains from hybrid seedlings of peach cultivars with open pollination (Shen Dexu et al., 1962).It was not until the early 1960s that peach-breeding programs in China were systematically initiated (Shen Dexu, 1980; Wang Zuhua and Duan Xinmei, 1964).

Abstract:KEY MESSAGE:Molecular breeding of Cucumis sativus L. is based on traditional breeding techniques and modern biological breeding in China. There are opportunities for further breeding improvement by molecular design breeding and the automation of phenotyping technology using untapped sources of genetic diversity. Cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) is an important vegetable cultivated worldwide. It bears fruits of light fragrance, and crisp texture with high nutrition. China is the largest producer and consumer of cucumber, accounting for 70% of the world's total production. With increasing consumption demand, the production of Cucurbitaceae crops has been increasing yearly. Thus, new cultivars that can produce high-quality cucumber with high yield and easy cultivation are in need. Conventional genetic breeding has played an essential role in cucumber cultivar innovation over the past decades. However, its progress is slow due to the long breeding period, and difficulty in selecting stable genetic characters or genotypes, prompting researchers to apply molecular biotechnologies in cucumber breeding. Here, we first summarize the achievements of conventional cucumber breeding such as crossing and mutagenesis, and then focus on the current status of molecular breeding of cucumber in China, including the progress and achievements on cucumber genomics, molecular mechanism underlying important agronomic traits, and also on the creation of high-quality multi-resistant germplasm resources, new variety breeding and ecological breeding. Future development trends and prospects of cucumber molecular breeding in China are also discussed.

Abstract:The main progresses in research on improvement of jujube cultivars and the basis of cross breeding were reviewed. The achievements of seedling selection and the basic research on cross breeding, including biology of pollination, fertilization, embryo development and culture and so on were mentioned. In addition, the identification of male sterility, the inheritance of characteristics in seedlings and identification of hybrids from open pollinated progenies using biological technique were summarized. The problems and prospect in Chinese jujube breeding are also discussed.

Abstract:Research on peach genetic resources and breeding has achieved remarkable progress in recent decades, especially in China. In this review, we first described the geographic distribution, ecology, phenotypes, and genetic diversity of peach landraces and wild relatives in China. We also discussed the almond. Subsequently, breeding programs of peaches in China are summarized, including breeding history, breeding targets, breeding institutes, elite breeding materials, breeding solutions, and domestically bred representative cultivars. Furthermore, we reviewed the genes or loci that have been mined using both linkage mapping and genome wide association study (GWAS) as well as the evolutionary genetics and domestication history of the peach. Finally, we gave our perspectives and suggestions for future breeding in terms of breeding material selection and breeding technology innovation.

Abstract:As one of the traditionally famous flowers in China,peony is of important value in ornament and commercial devel-opment. Based on the utilization of the peony germplasm resources, the article summarized the recent progresses in the germplasm and technical innovation of peony in China. Main problems on the development of peony in China were discussed and a few sugges-tions were presented. It was pointed out that molecular breeding technology with conventional breeding would be the key for peony breeding in the future.

Abstract:The present study is an attempt to review the history of super hybrid rice breeding in China and abroad and an introduction to advancement in super hybrid rice breeding in China.At present,a great breakthrough in utilizing subspecies heterosis of indica and japonica rice and plant type breeding has been obtained in super hybrid rice breeding in China,and super hybrid rice has been extended for large scale cultivation.But,there are many problems existing in super hybrid rice cultivation,such as poorer adaptability,lower seed setting rate,bad grain quality,worse resistance to biotic and abiotic stresses,fewer double-cropping super rice varieties(combinations),imperfect breeding theory and technology.Therefore,some suggestions and research prospects have been put forward for overcoming these problems.

Abstract:Kernel apricot is a general designation of apricot producing almond.It has the advantages of being tolerant to drought,strong resistance and easy to manage,which are generally suitable to be planted in northern China.Kernel apricot has good effects on improving ecological environment,preventing soil erosion and desertification,making it an ideal non-timber tree species.However,in the actual production,kernel apricot often suffers from coldness in winter and frost in early spring,resulting in the reduction of the yield and limited development of industrialization.In this paper,the general situations and progress of cold resistance on kernel apricot study were summarized from three aspects:new variety breeding,physiological and biochemical mechanism and molecular biology.It would provide a reference and theoretical basis for further study on cold resistance of kernel apricot.

Abstract:Apple rootstock breeding has achieved great progress worldwide. In this review, we first summarize the rootstock breeding targets and utilization in main apple-producing countries. Furthermore, we discuss the focus and important research areas of apple rootstock breeding through five aspects: parent selection and setting of crosses, target genes and marker-assisted breeding, root configuration-guided breeding, apomictic resource utilization, and the application of genetic engineering. Finally, we propose an apple rootstock division plan for China, which has a large potential to provide guidance for apple rootstock breeding and utilization in different apple-producing areas of China.

Abstract:As a large agricultural country, the cultivation of fruit trees and the development of new varieties in China is very important.Peach is origin from China.At present, there are thousands of peach commercial varieties in China, peach germplasm resources are abundant, but the lack of further study of germplasm resources has lead to restriction of the development of peach commodity economy.There are three national peach germplasm resource nurseries in China, and most germplasm resources of peach in China have been collected, and excellent varieties have been selected for cultivation by agronomy, biology and other research methods.Meanwhile, the evolutionary process of peach has been preliminarily analyzed by sequencing and other methods.

Abstract:The recent status of rose breeding and cultivation research and cut flower production in China is reported in this article. Currently, all new rose cultivars in China are bred through conventional breeding. Biotechnology has been applied to rose breeding recently. Rose cultivation research includes physiology, growing techniques and post-harvest evaluation. It is evident that cit rose production and sales are growing rapidly in China. Yunnan, Guangdong and Chongqing are the major producing provinces in recent years.
