Abstract:The temperature dependence of luminescence from [Cu(dnbp)(DPEPhos)]BF4 (dnbp = 2,9‐di‐n‐butylphenanthroline, DPEPhos = bis[2‐(diphenylphosphino)phenyl]ether) in a poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) film indicates the presence of long‐life green emission arising from two thermally equilibrated charge transfer (CT) excited states and one non‐equilibrated triplet ligand center (3LC) excited state. At room temperature, the lower triplet CT state is found to be the predominantly populated excited state, and the zero‐zero energy of this state is found to be 2.72 eV from the onset of its emission at 80 K. The tunable emission maximum of [Cu(dnbp)(DPEPhos)]BF4 in various hosts with different triplet energies is explained in terms of the multiple triplet energy levels of this complex in amorphous films. Using the high triplet energy charge transport material as a host and an exciton‐blocking layer (EBL), a [Cu(dnbp)(DPEPhos)]BF4 based organic light‐emitting diode (OLED) achieves a high external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 15.0%, which is comparable to values for similar devices based on Ir(ppy)3 and FIrpic. The photoluminescence (PL) and electroluminescence (EL) performance of green emissive [Cu(μI)dppb]2 (dppb = 1,2‐bis[diphenylphosphino]benzene) in organic semiconductor films confirmed its 3CT state with a zero‐zero energy of 2.76 eV as the predominant population excited state.
Highly Efficient Blue Electroluminescent Materials Based on Phenanthro[9,10-D]Imidazole

Abstract:Phenanthro[9,10-d]-imidazole(PI) unit has attracted extensive attentions in organic optoelectro-nic field due to its intrinsic wide band gap, high luminescence efficiency, good thermal stability, balanced charge carrier injection and transport property as well as low fabrication cost. In this manuscript, the recently reported blue electroluminescent PI derivatives were reviewed. The structure characteristics of PI were demon-strated, and the structure-property relationships of some PI derivatives were summarized systemically. At last, all the reported highly efficient nondoped deep blue emitters were summed up in order to comprehensively evaluate the potentials of PI derivatives in organic light emitting diodes( OLEDs) in the future.

Abstract:A series of π-conjugated compounds with bright blue photoluminescence property were designed and synthesized. The main structure comprises of fluorene as electron acceptor and thiophene as electron donor in order to increase the electron mobility. All the products were confirmed by proton, and carbon NMR, MS and elemental analysis as well. They might be widely applied as luminescent in organic light emitting diodes (OLED) which has been attracted much attention in recent years.

Abstract:A novel hyperbranched conjugated polymer composed of 1,3,5-trivinylicbenzene cores and (2,5-dimethoxyl)-1,4-phenylenevinylene connecting units (HB2) was synthesized via Wittig reaction route. The resulting polymer has good solubility in common organic solvents due to its weak intermolecular interaction and low solvation energy. PL and EL properties of HB2 were inspected. In film, absorption of HB2 was slightly blue shifted from absorption in solution while PL emission was red shifted from that of solution. These marked differences suggested a large change in inter- and/or intra-molecular interaction from solution to solid film. Single layer light emitting diodes were fabricated utilizing HB2 as the emitting layer. Dispersing HB2 into a PVK matrix caused significant changes in the device performance. Bright blue emission >800 cd/m2 can be achieved at a bias of 24 V for the ITO/PVK:HB2=5:1/Ca/Al devices and efficiency of the polymer blend devices was an order of magnitude higher than that of the HB2 single layer devices.

Abstract:A new soluble triphenylamine-based conjugated polymer, poly[N-(4'-butylphenyl)imino(1,1':4',1 "-terphenyl-4'4 "-ylene)], (PBPITP), has been synthesized, which emits blue photoluminescence (PL) with high absolute PL quantum efficiency (45 +/- 3%) but exhibits red electroluminescence (red shifted by as much as 157 nm from the PL spectrum).

Abstract:Through a base-induced copolymerization of 4,4'-bis(bromomethyl) biphenyl and styrene, a series of poly(p-biphenylenevinylene-co-styrene) (PBPV-co-PS) copolymers (P-1, P-2, and P-3) have been synthesized. The obtained PBPV-co-PS copolymers were characterized with FTIR spectra, H-1 NMR spectra, and GPC. The photoluminescence (PL) spectra showed a clear blue shift as an increase in the amount of styrene added in the copolymerization, which indicates that the average conjugating length of PBPV segment in the copolymer is adjustable. Blue light emission with a maximum at 457 nm and a turn-on voltage of 9.0 V were observed from a single-layer device (ITO/P-3/Al) in which P-3 was used as an emitting material.

Abstract:In this work, we depict the synthesis and characterization of a series of meso-substituted boron-dipyrromethene (BODIPY) compounds. Their optical and electrochemical properties were investigated systematically. All these compounds exhibited intense absorption bands in the ultraviolet (UV) and visible regions, which arise from the pi-pi* transitions based on their BODIPY core segments. By comparing electron-withdrawing substituents and electron-donating substituents, we found that these compounds exhibited some similar photophysical properties but exhibited different fluorescence in the solid state. All compounds were highly emissive in dichloromethane at room temperature (lambda(em) = 512-523 nm, phi(PL) > 0.9). When these compounds were applied in blue-driven light-emitting diodes (LEDs) as light-emitting materials, the devices showed luminescence efficiency ranging from 1.09 to 34.13 lm/W. Their luminescence and electrochemical properties could be used for understanding the structure-property relationship of BODIPY compounds and developing functional fluorescent materials.

Abstract:Organic fluorophores with tunable π-conjugated paths have attracted considerable attention owing to their diverse properties and promising applications. Herein, we present a tailored butterfly-like molecule, 2,2'-(2,5-bis (2,2-diphenylvinyl)-1,4-phenylene)dinaphthalene (BDVPN), which exhibits diverse photophysical features in its two polymorphs. The BP phase crystal, with its "aligned wings" conformation, possesses emissive characteristics that are nearly identical to those in dilute solutions. In contrast, the BN phase crystal, which adopts an "orthogonal wings" conformation, exhibits an unusual hypsochromic-shifted emission compared to its dilute solution counterparts. This intriguing hypsochromic-shifted emission originates from the reduction in the effective conjugated length of the molecular skeleton. Notably, BN phase crystals also exhibit exceptional optical performance, featuring high-efficiency emission (76.6 %), low-loss optical waveguides (0.571 dB mm-1), deep-blue amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) with narrow full width at half maximum (FWHM: 6.4 nm), and a unique 200 nm bathochromic shift of piezochromic luminescence.

Abstract:Two efficient fluorescence molecules, named 1-(4-trifluoromethylphenyl)-2-(4′-(1,4,5-triphenyl-1H-imidazole-2-yl)-[1,1′-biphenyl]-4-yl)-1H-phenanthro[9,10-d]imidazole (PPI-PIM-1) and 1-(4-trifluoromethylphenyl)-2-(4′-(2,4,5-triphenyl-1H-imidazole-1-yl)-[1,1′-biphenyl]-4-yl)-1H-phenanthro[9,10-d]imidazole (PPI-PIM-2) were designed and synthesized, in which the electron-withdrawing trifluoromethyl group was introduced firstly to N1-position benzene of phenanthroimidazole to improve the electron transporting ability and tune the charge transfer (CT) component. In addition, compared to biphenanthroimidazole derivatives, here, we break one rigid plane of phenanthroimidazole to inhibit aggregation-induced-quenching (ACQ) and change the position from C1 to N1 to restrict the conjugation length simultaneously. The devices based on PPI-PIM-1 and PPI-PIM-2 exhibited stable deep-blue emission with CIE coordinates of (0.15, 0.08) and (0.15, 0.07) and achieved maximum external quantum efficiencies of 4.3% and 4.5% respectively. More importantly, the corresponding exciton utilization efficiencies are as high as 27.0% and 30.3%.

Abstract:Utilizing benzothiazole (BTz) combined with fluorene as backbone units, we designed and synthesized a novel blue-emitting copolymer poly[(9,9-dioctyl-9H-fluorene)-alt-(2-heptylbenzo[d]thiazole)] (PF-BTz). PF-BTz shows excellent thermal stability with the 5% weight-loss decomposition temperature above 410 degrees C. According to the molecular geometry analyzed by density functional theory (DFT) calculations, PF-BTz should possess clearly twisted backbone and weak molecule coplanarity. The photophysical properties of PF-BTz were discussed, and particularly the photoluminescence (PL) spectra of PF-BTz in solution and film both display the blue emission with peaks wavelength of 420 nm and 429 nm, respectively. Then the polymer light-emitting diodes (PLEDs) was fabricated by using PF-BTz as emitting layer, and the PF-BTz-based device also shows the blue emission with CIEx,y of (0.23, 0.25) and a maximal luminous efficiency (LEmax) of 0.25 cd/A. The results indicate that the PF-BTz copolymer incorporating fluorene and benzothiazole backbone units would be a promising blue emitter for high-performance PLEDs.
A Pure Blue Light Emitting Binaphthyl Derivative: Synthesis and Properties

Abstract:A binaphthyl derivative with pyrene on 3 and 3′ positions was synthesized and characterized via Suzuki coupling reaction. Emission maximum in solution was located at 390nm with a quantum efficiency of 68% by taking 9,10-diphenyl anthracene as reference, while it is shifted to 450nm with FWHM of 104nm resulting from aggregation state in solid film. Glass transition temperature (Tg) and decomposition temperature were measured to be 184 and 447°C, respectively, by DSC and TGA. Unlike its photoluminescence spectrum, electroluminescent spectrum peaked at about 460nm and shows a FWHM of 69nm corresponding to a pure blue emission. The turn-on voltage, luminance and efficiency maximum were 5V, 2953cd/m2 and 1.37cd/A with CIE color coordinate of (0.16, 0.15), in the device structure of ITO/NPB (40nm)/PY-BN-PY (15nm)/BPhen (40nm)/Mg:Ag.

Abstract:An innovative novel category of polymeric hybridized local and charge-transfer (HLCT) blue materials prepared via solution processing has yet to be reported. This study introduces three polymers, namely PZ1 , PZ2 , and PZ3 , incorporating donor–acceptor–donor (D–A–D) structures with carbazole functioning as the donor and benzophenone as the acceptor. To regulate the luminescence mechanism and conjugation length, carbonyl and alkyl chains are strategically inserted into the backbone. Theoretical calculation and transient absorption spectroscopy illustrate that the robust spin-orbit coupling between high-lying singlet excited states (S m : m ⩽ 4) and triplet excited states (T n : n ⩽ 7) of the polymers hastens and significantly heightens the efficiency of reverse intersystem crossing processes from T n states. Furthermore, the existence of multiple degenerated frontier molecular orbits and significant overlaps between T n and S m states give rise to added radiative pathways that boost the radiative rate. This study marks a fundamental and initial manifestation of HLCT materials within the polymer field and provides a new avenue for the design of highly efficient polymeric emitters.

Abstract:The blue light emitting compound, BPPI, based on a phenanthro[9,10-d]imidazole group, is prepared by a facial synthetic process and exhibits excellent thermal stability, highly efficient fluorescence and balanced carrier injection. The double-layered device based on BPPI shows a higher maximum luminance and a lower turn-on voltage than the multi-layered one with an independent electron injection layer. The results suggest that the phenanthroimidazole unit is an excellent building block for tuning the carrier injection properties as well as blue emission.

Abstract:Two ethynyl-linked π-conjugated compounds with bright blue photoluminescence property were designed, synthesized and fully characterized. The main structures of them contain a pyrene as electron acceptor, a carbazole as electron donor linked by an ethynyl unit. This D–A system has increased electron mobility and high quantum yields. One of the compounds was sandwiched as luminescent in single- and double-layer devices. By incorporating Alq as electron transport layer, the double-layer device exhibits dramatically improved performances compared with the single-layer device. The compounds are promising blue light-emitting and electron-transport materials.

Abstract:We report the synthesis of the conjugated polymer, poly(1,4-bis[2-(4-hexylthiophene)]-2,5-dimethylphenylene), by FeCl3 oxidation in high yield. The polymer has perfect head-to-head (HH) linkages between the thiophene rings, exhibits good solubility in conventional organic solvents, and exhibits high thermal stability. The optical band gap is ∼2.76 eV. The polymer emits greenish-blue light under UV irradiation with the emission maximum at 507 nm; the photoluminescence (PL) efficiency (solid thin film) is ∼10%. The external electroluminescence efficiency was measured to be 0.0012% for single layer devices using Al as the cathode material and 0.0035% for single layer devices using Ca as the cathode material.
Blue Light-Emitting Diodes from Polymer Blends

Abstract:Electroluminescence (EL) is reported from a novel polymer blend of poly(2,5-dibutoxyphenylene) (PPP) and polymer poly(N-vinylcarbazole) (PVK). Since PPP and PVK are soluble in common organic solvents, light-emitting diodes (LEDs) can be fabricated by spin-coating films of the polymer blends from solution without subsequent processing or heat treatment. Indium-tin-oxide (ITO) and aluminum (Al) are used as the hole-injection and electron-injection electrodes, respectively. Blue light emission is observed at about 8 V and have a peak emission wavelength at 448 nm at room temperature. The EL efficiency is about 0.82%, which is greater than.that of pure PPP by approximately one order of magnitude.

Abstract:A new light-emitting copolymer [poly(distyrylbenzene-block-tri(ethylene oxide)) (DSB-TEO)], containing alternating rigid, conjugated distyrylbenzene as light-emitting units and flexible tri(ethylene oxide) as ionic conductive units, was synthesized via Wittig reaction. The polymer has fairly good solubility in chloroform and excellent film-forming ability. Single-layer and double-layer light-emitting diodes with indium tin oxide anodes and calcium cathodes were fabricated, and the photoluminescence (PL) and electroluminescence (EL) properties were investigated. Single layer light emitting diode with DSB-TEO as the active layer(ITO/PEDOT:PSS/DSB-TEO/Ca) showed bright blue emission with luminance over 450 cd/m(2) and efficiency of 0.1 cd/A. Inserting a thin layer of Alq3 between the copolymer and the cathode improved the device performance, luminance over 1000 cd/m(2) and efficiency of 0.5 cd/A could be achieved. The enhanced emission in the longer wave part due to Alq(3) contribution is negligible. This polymer may also be a good candidate material for light emitting electrochemical cells (LECs).

Abstract:A novel blue light-emitting polyfluorene-based copolymer PTHD containing electron-rich triphenylamine and electron-poor phenylquinoline side chains in the C-9 position of fluorene unit is described. By comparison of the solution and thin film photoluminescence (PL) spectra of PTHD, a considerable red-shift of Delta lambda =10-15 nm was observed in the thin film PL spectrum. The emission intensity of the shoulder peak appeared in dilute solution was also significantly enhanced in the thin film. In contrast to the reference polymer poly{[9,9-dihexylfluorene]-alt-[9,9-di(2,4-diphenylquinoline)fluorene]}, PTHD exhibits higher HOMO energy level, and higher maximum brightness with the PLED device configuration of ITO/PEDOT:PSS/polymer(70%) + PBD30%/TPBI/LiF/Al. Abstract:Deep blue photoluminescence and electroluminescence are demonstrated from a soluble conjugated polymer, poly(9,9-dihexylfluorene-alt-co-2,5-didecyloxy-para-phenylene). The PL quantum efficiency is approximately 40%. Cyclic voltammetry measurements indicate that the highest occupied molecular orbital and lowest unoccupied molecular orbital energies are 5.66 and 2.62 eV below vacuum, respectively. Single-layer and multilayer light-emitting diodes emit deep blue light (peak at ∼420 nm).
