Self-Concept Discrepancy and Value Orientation of Undergraduates

Abstract:Based on previous research examining the value orientation and temporal self-awareness,the present study proposed that self-concept discrepancy was one of the crucial factors that affected one's value orientation. Two studies examined the hypothesis in a sample of undergraduates.Results showed that individuals experienced more expected possible self-concept discrepancy,which was defined as the discrepancy of possible self and current self,than feared possible self-concept discrepancy,which was defined as the discrepancy of current goal and current self.Whereas idealism would dominate ones' value system when possible self-concept discrepancy was activated,pragmatism was preferred when current self-concept discrepancy was activated.It also implied that there were no significant differences between the two value orientations when the current goals and current self was co-activated and when only current self was activated explicitly.
