Abstract:This paper makes a detailed exploration and examination of the observations and thoughts about the Western education which the diplomats in the late Qing Dynasty wrote down on their first trip abroad. Chronologically, the paper begins from the late 1860s when the Qing government dispatched diplomats to Europe and America for investigation and special mission. The first such trip can be traced back to 1866, in which Sir Robert Hart (1835—1911), the Inspector General of the Chinese Imperial Maritime Customs from 1863 to 1908, led a delegation on an investigation tour with Bin Chun and his son. At the end of the Qing Dynasty, a large number of diplomats went abroad in succession, the most representative among whom being Guo Song-tao, the first envoy to the UK and Xue Fu-cheng, a great political reformer after the Westernization Movement. Being participants in and supporters of the modernization movement in the late Qing Dynasty, however, they were really shocked and impressed and influenced by Western values, thoughts and culture, despite their discrepancies in terms of political inclination, experience and background, and world outlook and personal purpose. Not only did they observe Western material civilization and strong weapons, and political systems and social etiquette behind them, but understood the new Western education being the principle of strong and prosperous Western countries. Moreover, they kept a record of the western education in different areas and aspects, while expressing their own views and opinions, which offered valuable ideological resources and practical models for Chinese modern education that must catch up with that of Western countries. The review and assessment of this particular part of history provide useful references and guidance for the educational reform in China.

Abstract:China began to send students to study in western countries in the Late Qing Dynasty.Going to the United States and Europe opened the page of overseas education.Sending students to study abroad for education was an important part of its education reform in the period of Westernization Movement which was risen in the 1860's to the 1890's.The children studying in the United States and students sent by the ship-administration school to Europe were the first group overseas students by the Late Qing government,thereby starting apioneer stage of Chinese overseas education in modern times.Analysis of causes of different results produced from overseas education both in America and in Europe helps to obtain evaluation of overseas education,thereby causing the reflection of today's overseas education.

Abstract:In the cross-cultural communication between China and the West in the first half of the 20 th century,Overseas Chinese students,by virtue of their deep accomplishment in both Chinese and Western learning as well as cultural consciousness,actually took the role of the government in transmitting Chinese culture.They translated Chinese works into foreign languages,created works about Chinese literature and culture in foreign languages,conducted academic researches on Chinese issues in foreign languages,provided assistance to Western sinological circles with Chinese language and Chinese resources and showed the spiritual outlook of Chinese people by interpersonal communication and social activities. The overseas Chinese students thus became the significant medium in spreading Chinese learning to the West. The emergence of this cultural phenomenon was not only the outcome of development of Chinese education for studying abroad,but also closely related to the cultural background that the west-centrism was widely questioned but Chinese culture was popular again after the two world wars.

Abstract:As an important event in modern Chinese revolutionary history and modern Chinese educational history, the Chinese overseas students' work-study movement in France in early 1900s exerted far-reaching and long-lasting influences upon the development of modern education in China. The extensive dissemination of Marxism in France made it possible for the Chinese early communists and revolutionary students to get direct access to the original works of Marx, En-gels and Lenin and obtain important achievements in the understanding of Marxism. Consequently, they made great contributions in the selection and recognition and later introduction of Marxist thought on education into China.

Abstract:The Qing government began to send students to Germany with the establishment of diplomatic relations between Germany and China,and with a better understanding of Germany by Chinese people.Chinese students studying in Germany who mainly came from Hubei,Jiangsu and Zhejiang provinces from 1876 to 1911constituted an important component of Chinese students studying abroad.They studied military training primarily in Germany,but later gradually turned to the legal and natural science subjects.It was difficult for the Qing Government to manage the students studying abroad.With the increasing of students' number,both Chinese and German were working hard to explore the solutions,but the actual result was not satisfactory.

Abstract:Students had already been sent to study abroad before our higher education system was established.Among the earliest overseas students,there were some who studied in the field of mining and metallurgy.After higher mining education was established in China,we had to rely on the educational sources of other countries to train high-level talents because of academic limitation.Then,studying mining abroad was an important part of overseas education.These overseas students input the western mining knowledge,and some of them were employed in universities.They exerted the teaching methods of western countries in their work,and tried to conduct mining scientific research.They contributed a lot to the development of higher mining education in modern China.

Abstract:In the development of higher education in modern China,a group of agricultural teachers composed of overseas returnees in agriculture were active.At the beginning of 20th century,many young people from the coastal Jiangsu,Zhejiang and Guangdong,cherishing the ideals of ″saving China through education″,″saving China through agriculture″,went to the institutes of higher agricultural learning in Japan and France to study sericulture,agronomy and horticulture.Since 1909,with the tide shifting to America,more young people went to the institutes of higher learning,e.g.Cornell University to study the disciplines relevant to agriculture and many got degrees.Since the mid and later 1910s,they returned to China successively and joined the teaching and research in institutes of higher agricultural learning.They introduced the modern college concepts and disciplines of higher agriculture in the West and reformed them according to the actual Chinese conditions.In a sense,they made contributions to the formation and development of higher agricultural disciplines in modern China by establishing a triple mode of ″teaching,research and promotion″,exploring teaching theories,compiling new textbooks,cultivating better teaching faculty,conducting scientific research,organizing academic groups and initiating academic journals.

Abstract:The chair's words The western learning into the east began in the late Ming dynasty and early Qing dy-nasty. The European missionaries brought many western things and meanwhile some knowledge such as astronomy, calendar, mathematics and others that influenced Chinese community of knowledge. In the late Qing dynasty political awareness, philosophical thoughts, cultural ideas and others besides advanced technology were introduced into China. New kind of education and translated works influenced Chinese way of living and thinking that led to asking for novelty and changes, which changed the mode of rigid and exclusive thinking and recognition. Today studies on this history should focus on its realistic mean-ing, that's to say, howto viewthe traditional Chinese culture and recent western culture and the relation-ship of Chinese and western cultures in the rising heat of“ancient Chinese knowledge”. Only in this way can we put history as a mirror and push ahead China's reform and opening up to the outside world as well as modernization.

Abstract:On the side of the government,the overseas education in the late Qing Dynasty has some principal characteristics which are lash-up and dominated by outstanding persons.On the side of the group of students abroad,there are some characteristics,like patriotism is consistent with utilitarianism,and the particular knowledge structure which is focused on the western culture.The overseas education in the late Qing Dynasty has some serious problems which are utilitarian and unsuited by training of the students abroad for their occupation.Meanwhile,especially because of a fundamental opposition between the modern enterprise of studying abroad and the traditional autocratic government,the overseas education fell into an inextricable predicament in the late Qing Dynasty.Except that quite a number of students abroad became an important strength which tried to subvert the Qing government,the examination policy of studying abroad which was rewarded by the Qing government,actually made the modern system develop into the traditional enterprise,and was becoming more and more distant from the modern times in a certain sense.
