Abstract:Objective To determine whether,in patients with colorectal cancer, oral intake of 250 ml clear fluid 1.5-2 hours before induction of anesthesia affects the volume and pH of gastric contents. Methods We studied 90 adult patients with colorectal cancer who were scheduled for elective surgery under general anesthesia in our department from January 1,2008 to June 30,2008.All patients fasted from midnight and were randomly assigned to glucose solution, water or fasting group. About 1.5-2 hours before their scheduled induction of anesthesia, those in the fluid groups drank 250 ml of 5%glucose solution or water.Immediately following induction of general anesthesia and tracheal intubation, gastric contents were aspirated through a multiorifice nasogatric tube. The fluid volume and pH were recorded. Results Median values in glucose solution group, water group and fasting group were:gastric fluid volume 19±14.4 ml,15 + 13.4 ml and 16+10.3 ml;pH 1.64+0.166,2.02 + 1.265 and 2.18 + 1.420.The proportions of patients with the combination of residual gastric volume more than 25 ml and pH less than 2.5 in three groups were 12/30,7/30 and 5/30,respectively.Differences among three groups were not statistically significant. Conclusion Drinking 250 ml of clear fluid 1.5-2 hours before induction of anesthesia has no effect on gastric fluid volume and pH in patients with colorectal cancer.
