Abstract:Under the background of marine strategy and clean energy strategy, China has carried out large-scale construction around marine ranching and offshore wind farms and made great achievements. However, the problems such as high project cost, the fragmentation of marine habitats and maritime conflict are becoming increasingly prominent, which have led to the test and exploration of integrated development of offshore wind farms and marine ranching at home and abroad. Based on the analysis of relevant research and test work at home and abroad, suggestions are put forward for the current situation of integrated development of offshore wind and animal husbandry, as well as the difficulties and challenges in economic and policy feasibility, site selection and planning, fish species selection, supporting equipment development, ecological impact assessment (noise, electromagnetic field, base interference, heavy metal migration, etc.), etc.

Abstract:This paper explores the China’s urbanization history based on horizontal comparison and vertical node analysis since 1980s. It indicates that urbanization policy should be focused on the Spatial Agglomeration Theory. The concept of the Agglomeration Index was further introduced which can not only be used to measure the urbanization level, but also as a measure whether the small towns has reached the benchmark of spatial aggregation. The paper then examined the space agglomeration of small towns from the macro perspective. This is supported with a case study in Chongqing to emphasize that the construction of small towns should be focused on the agglomeration effects. Finally, the role of small town in the future urbanization process was further discussed.

Abstract:The marine economy constitutes a regional economic system centered around a specific marine geographical area, including coastal zones, and is dependent on marine resources and the environment. This study focuses on investigating the developmental spatial environment of marine cities, specifically examining the evolution of economic development capacity and resource spatial structure. Shenzhen is chosen as the research subject. Utilizing a set of comprehensive evaluation indices and a regression method based on the spatially expanded Tobit model, we conduct a thorough assessment of the city's economic development capacity. Additionally, an analysis of the spatial and temporal distribution patterns, as well as the changes in marine economic density and the evolution of marine city resources, unveils the profound alterations in the spatial structure of marine city resources during rapid economic development. This research not only provides a theoretical foundation but also practical insights for the sustainable development of marine cities.

Abstract:The economic development in China and the rising of the living standard need to speed up the urbanisa-tion. The development of small towns is an important way to Chinese urbanisation. Land use plays a very important rolein the development of small towns. However there are many problems in the development of small towns, esp. in landuse. The paper first discusses the land problems in the development of small towns. Such as much cultivated land liesidle, under-utilization and waste of land, increasing illegal use of land, unstable contractual relationship for land use.The relationship between the development of small towns and land use is also studied. Then the guidelines for the landsystem innovations of small towns are put forward. Namely the sustainability of social and economic development, the bal-ance between land reservation and land utilization, the provision of service to village, agriculture and farmer, the manage-ment of land resource and land assets, the parsimonious and legal use of land. The basic framework of land system innova-tions of small towns is put forward finally. It include the land replacement policy for small towns and the permanent tenan-cy of farmland, the overall plan for land uses and other plans in harmony, the establishment of a flexible system of landsupplies, using land with payments, the transfer of agricultural land and refining the land law related to the constructionof small towns.

Abstract:From the perspective of global city-region,this paper tries to establish the theory of small town's evolution in the Yangtze River Delta.The development characteristics of global city-region,such as globalized production network,high-speed transportation network,high-quality intensive development need,and the upgrading of social consumption demand,are the main external factors that accelerate the differentiated development of small towns.Based on the combination of the external factors and the natural resources of small towns,the current development of small towns in the Yangtze River Delta can be divided into three types,which are metropolitan integration,regional growth pole,and public service center.For the small towns that do not belong to the metropolitan integration type,there are three development trends in the future,i.e.,to become small cities with comprehensive functions,to develop into the featured and vigorous tourism service centers,and to become the public facility centers that provide service for the large rural area.

Abstract:Small towns are important drivers for China's urbanization, but at the present they have no autonomy in deciding whether or not to sell their land, what the planned future is, how urban land will be developed, whether or not to borrow and/or raise funds from the financial market. The public services and facilities such as schools, hospitals, cultural and community centers, and public housing are usually poorly developed in small towns, failing to meet the basic needs for urban growth. As such, both the development of rural China and the broader urbanization and modernization processes are checked by inadequate power of decision-making and poor services in small towns. This paper advocates the designation of a new type of city in China, i.e. “county-serviced city” (CSC, xian guan shi), to qualified small towns within the existing administrative hierarchy. The CSC will have the same rights as all other Chinese cities in dealing with their economic development, but it will remain in its current position as a township level unit in the administrative system and continue to be served with social services and public goods by its county government. The paper is presented in seven sections with an emphasis on the principles of “decentralization” and “small government, big society”, the experiences in other socioeconomic and cultural contexts, and a scenario of status-change in Nancun township, Qingdao, Shandong Province.

In recent years, with population growth and the need for socio-economic development, island urban development has been given top priority to create a suitable living and working environment for residents. Besides the benefits that island urban development brings, there are negative impacts on island resources and the environment due to massive urban development. In particular, in a context where the world increasingly faces challenges of climate change, environmental pollution, and economic competition, sustainable island urban development is urgent. From a comprehensive perspective of geographical science based on synthesizing research documents on island urban areas, this article clarifies the future trend of island urban development, which requires attention to the unique characteristics of islands, if you want to develop sustainable island urban areas in the future, you need to follow the philosophy "Relying on Nature - Suitable for land - Harmony of people".

Abstract:Over the last a few years,the urban development in the area of the Yangtze River Delta has been characteristic,forming a large economic core region in China.A city group,with Shanghai as a center,is now forming.This area has very strong economy,and relatively well developed society and environment for investment.The rapid development of the regional urbanization has transformed this area into a megalopolis.From the general perspectives of the trends in megalopolis development in the world,this paper analyzes briefly the problems in the further sustainable development of the megalopolis.Strategies for the sustainable development of the Yangtze Delta megalopolis have therefore been proposed:1)to establish the role of Shanghai as a global economic center,2)to increase the urbanization,3) to invest more in major industry,4)to strengthen further inner cooperation within the megaloplolis,5)to improve the government management on the regional development and 6) to set up plans across different administration areas.

Abstract:Human population density within 100 km of the sea is approximately three times higher than the global average. People in this zone are concentrated in coastal cities that are hubs for transport and trade – which transform the marine environment. Here, we review the impacts of three interacting drivers of marine urbanization (resource exploitation, pollution pathways and ocean sprawl) and discuss key characteristics that are symptomatic of urban marine ecosystems. Current evidence suggests these systems comprise spatially heterogeneous mosaics with respect to artificial structures, pollutants and community composition, while also undergoing biotic homogenization over time. Urban marine ecosystem dynamics are often influenced by several commonly observed patterns and processes, including the loss of foundation species, changes in biodiversity and productivity, and the establishment of novel assemblages, ruderal species and synanthropes. Further, we discuss potential urban acclimatization and adaptation among marine taxa, interactive effects of climate change and marine urbanization, and ecological engineering strategies for enhancing urban marine ecosystems. By assimilating research findings across disparate disciplines, we aim to build the groundwork for urban marine ecology – a nascent field; we also discuss research challenges and future directions for this new field as it advances and matures. Ultimately, all sides of coastal city design: architecture, urban planning, and civil and municipal engineering, will need to prioritize the marine environment if negative effects of urbanization are to be minimized. In particular, planning strategies that account for the interactive effects of urban drivers and accommodate complex system dynamics could enhance the ecological and human functions of future urban marine ecosystems.This article is protected by copyright. Abstract:Sustainable urban transformation has become a mantra for Chinese cities. While most studies focus on sustainable urbanization in megacities, the far larger number of medium-sized cities is understudied, although the latter face more severe urban problems. This article develops a framework for examining policy change in sustainable urban development initiated at the central level and reactions, tensions, and implementation issues emerging at the local level. It focuses on an in-depth case study of the challenges in realizing a transition from quantity-oriented pro-growth policies to sustainable quality-oriented ones in a medium-sized Chinese city. We find that there is evidence of changes in long-term values and goals toward sustainability at the levels of both central and local government, but also great inconsistency between goals on paper and policy implementation in practice. Sustainability in urban development is much harder to realize as local officials see urban development as a major means to maintain local economic growth, which can be separated from other issues in ecological preservation. The article concludes with a roadmap for future studies focusing on medium-sized cities, especially indicating how narratives on sustainable urban development hide from view financial and environmental risks generated by the actual implementation of the dominant aggressive urban pro-growth model.
Study on the influence degree of marine ranching on the high-quality development of coastal cities

Abstract:As an innovative approach to fisheries, marine ranching is subtly transforming the development patterns of coastal cities through the enhancement of fisheries, the professional transition of fishermen, and the restoration of the marine environment. Utilizing the entropy method and the staggered difference-in-differences (DID) method, this paper calculated the high-quality development index (HQDI) of 53 coastal cities from 2010 to 2021 and assessed the influence degree of marine ranching on coastal cities' HQDI. The key findings were as follows. Firstly, marine ranching generally improved the HQDI of coastal cities. Coastal cities with national marine ranching demonstration zones achieved an average increase of approximately 0.83 % in their HQDI compared to those without. Secondly, through the effect of carbon emission reduction, marine ranching contributed to an average increase of approximately 0.84 % in the HQDI. However, the green technology innovation and industrial structure upgrading effects have yet to materialize. Thirdly, this impact varied among coastal cities. When the number of marine ranching exceeded three, the average increase of HQDI was approximately 1.82 %. This effect was pronounced in higher-tier cities, with first-tier cities experiencing an average increase of 1.26 %, second-tier cities an average increase of 1.19 %, and third-tier cities an average increase of 2.18 %. Furthermore, this effect was significant in northern coastal cities, where the average increase was approximately 0.98 %. In coastal cities with low levels of manpower and material resources, this effect was also pronounced, with the HQDI increasing by an average of about 1.01 % and 0.98 %, respectively. Lastly, the spatial econometric analysis revealed a positive spatial spillover effect. This paper evaluated the effectiveness of China's recent marine ranching construction, providing a theoretical and empirical foundation for authorities to formulate targeted policies and measures.

Abstract:Water is the soul of the city, people in the early construction of the city is based on water, all the major cities today are river through. Rivers are closely related to the development of towns. As one of the indispensable and important substances for the survival and development of human beings, the study of water resources plays a great role in the construction of ecological civilization in cities. However, the problem of sewage discharge is still prevalent in small and medium-sized cities. Even though the country has spent a lot of money in recent years to deal with water pollution and implement measures to treat rivers whose ecological environment has been destroyed, the problem of sewage discharge cannot be solved fundamentally. Based on the research on moon lake in Chizhou, Anhui province, this paper holds that the restoration of urban small and medium-sized rivers should be based on the restoration of high-quality water resources, put forward the strategy of systematic management, ecological priority, improve the comprehensive benefits of urban small and medium-sized rivers, give full play to the role of effective supervision by residents, and build a new ecological civilization in the water areas. Based on the shortcomings and experience gained from the treatment of moon-lake sewage in Chizhou city, we will popularize the treatment of urban river wastewater from small to large, take the improvement of water environment as an important part of ecological management, find out the problems in the process of water environmental management and put forward corresponding measures to establish scientific and efficient protection mechanism.

Abstract:To develop small town is one of the priorities of the national strategy for urbanization since 2000. This paper points out that it neglects the fact that the supporting base for this strategy, the rural industrialization, is at a stage of stagnation and declining lately, which has brought about even more problems in practice. This paper suggests establishing a city or town system at county level and a system to name administrative region and settlement scientifically. The author believes that a comprehensive urbanization strategy should be in place instead of putting priority to any specific type of settlement. On the other hand, priority should be on the quality of urbanization.

Abstract:"Compact city" has become one of the most influential concept to achieve sustainable development since it was proposed in the 'Green Paper on Urban Environment' by the European Community committee(CEC) in 1990.Although a compact city contains some positive effects at the theoretical level, whether the concept could support sustainability in practice is still in question. The purpose of this article is to discuss the real effects and limitations of the compact city concept through a comprehensive review.Firstly,at the theoretical levels,compact city concept is ambiguous about its impacts on ecological,social and economical sustainability and it neglects of the vulnerability of cities caused by disasters.Secondly,at the practical level,compact city strategies have led to various social and econommic problems.Thirdly,in terms of transferability,the compact city concept originated from the western developed countries,which have fundamentally different political,economic and social systems as well as stage of urbanization from those of developing countries.The paper finally calls for developing countries to take into consideration their uniqueness to find their suitable sustainable urban form.
