Unity in Diversity:The Limit of European Identity

Abstract:The widening and deepening of European integration process highlight the importance of the construction of European identity. Although the concept of Unity in Diversity put forward by European Union is highly acclaimed,it comes across the following predicaments:on the internal definition of European identity,the difficult solution to leading and secondary issues leads to the predicament in tolerance and exclusion; on the external definition of European identity,the predicament in defining the concept of "others" leads to the uncertainty in identifying the boundary between "self" and "others". Therefore,the concept of Unity in Diversity not only hinders the practice of European identity,but also exposes the limit of its construction. The constitutional crisis of European Union has been overcome through the passing of Lisbon Treaty; however,the crisis of European identity still lingers there.
