Abstract:Let G be a finite abelian group with |G| > 1. Let a (1), aEuro broken vertical bar, a (k) be k distinct elements of G and let b (1), aEuro broken vertical bar, b (k) be (not necessarily distinct) elements of G, where k is a positive integer smaller than the least prime divisor of |G|. We show that there is a permutation pi on {1, aEuro broken vertical bar,k} such that a (1) b (pi(1)), aEuro broken vertical bar, a (k) b (pi(k)) are distinct, provided that any other prime divisor of |G| (if there is any) is greater than k!. This in particular confirms the Dasgupta-Karolyi-Serra-Szegedy conjecture for abelian p-groups. We also pose a new conjecture involving determinants and characters, and show that its validity implies Snevily's conjecture for abelian groups of odd order. Our methods involve exterior algebras and characters.

Basic results on an unsolved problem about factorization of finite groups

Abstract:We deal with an unsolved problem in group theory (question 19.35 of Kourovka Notebook). It asks whether, given a finite group G and a factorization <math>|G|=a1⋯ak</math> one can always find subsets <math>A1,…,Ak</math> such that <math>|A1|=a1,…,|Ak|=ak</math> and <math>G=A1⋯Ak.</math> The case k = 2 is of special interest. We prove that the answer is positive for all finite supersolvable (and so abelian) groups. However, G. Bergman has recently given a counterexample to the question for the case k = 3. Regarding the special case k = 2, at first, we prove that the statement is true for all finite solvable groups, and groups such that for every divisor d of their order, there is a subgroup of order or index d. Thereafter, by proving an extension theorem we show that the answer is positive if it is true for all simple groups with no subgroup of prime index. Also, we give some other theorems and criteria, for checking the property and state a question about some candidates for probable counterexamples. We end by noting some related connections, questions and problems about the topic.

A complete answer to the Gaveau--Brockett problem

Abstract: The note is dedicated to provide a satisfying and complete answer to the long-standing Gaveau--Brockett open problem. More precisely, we determine the exact formula of the Carnot--Carath\'eodory distance on arbitrary step-two groups. The basic idea of the proof is combining Varadhan's formulas with the explicit expression for the associated heat kernel $p_h$ and the method of stationary phase. However, we have to introduce a number of original new methods, especially the usage of the concept of "Operator convexity". Next, new integral expressions for $p_h$ by means of properties of Bessel functions will be presented. An unexpected direct proof for the well-known positivity of $p_h$ via its original integral formula, will play an important role. Furthermore, all normal geodesics joining the identity element $o$ to any given $g$ as well as the cut locus can be characterized on every step-two groups. Finally, the corresponding results in Riemannian geometry on step-two groups will be briefly presented as well.

Abstract:Bjorn Poonen asked whether there exists a polynomial giving a surjection $\mathbb{Z} \times \mathbb{Z} \to \mathbb{N}$. We answer this question in the negative, conditional on a conjecture of Vojta. More precisely, we show that if such a function exists, there is a family of open surfaces with dense integral points despite the surfaces being of log general type.

Abstract:We compute the generating series for the intersection pairings between the total Chern classes of the tangent bundles of the Hilbert schemes of points on a smooth projective surface and the Chern characters of tautological bundles over these Hilbert schemes. Modulo the lower weight term, we verify Okounkov's conjecture [Oko] connecting these Hilbert schemes and multiple $q$-zeta values. In addition, this conjecture is completely proved when the surface is abelian. We also determine some universal constants in the sense of Boissi\' ere and Nieper-Wisskirchen [Boi, BN] regarding the total Chern classes of the tangent bundles of these Hilbert schemes. The main approach of this paper is to use the set-up of Carlsson and Okounkov outlined in [Car, CO] and the structure of the Chern character operators proved in [LQW2].

Abstract:Dumortier and Roussarie proposed a conjecture in their paper (2009, Discrete Con. Dyn. Sys., 2,723-781): For any \begin{document}$ q\in {\mathbb{N}} $\end{document} , the Abelian integrals \begin{document}$ J_{2j+1}(h) = \int_{\gamma_h}x^{2j-1}\,\mathrm dy $\end{document} , \begin{document}$ j = 0, 1, 2, \cdots, q $\end{document} , form a strict Chebyshev system on intervals \begin{document}$ h\in (0, \frac{1}{2}] $\end{document} , where \begin{document}$ \gamma_h = \{(x, y)| \mathrm e^{-2y}(y+\frac{1}{2}-x^2) = h\} $\end{document} . If this conjecture holds, then they obtain the precise upper bound of the number of limit cycles that appear near a slow-fast Hopf point of any codimension. In the present paper we develop a method to estimate the number of zeros of Abelian integrals and prove this conjecture.

Abstract:We show the failure of a matricial version of Grothendieck's theorem for operator spaces, thereby resolving a long-standing open question in the field. Moreover, by showing that such a counterexample can occur in the simplest context of commutative $C^*$-algebras, we address some other open questions in operator algebras. Our constructions, completely explicit and fairly simple, are inspired by some techniques in quantum information theory.

Abstract:Let G be a finite group, and let A be a proper subgroup of G. Then any chief factor H/A G of G is called a G-boundary factor of A. For any Gboundary factor H/A G of A, the subgroup (A ∩ H)/A G of G/ A G is called a G-trace of A. In this paper, we prove that G is p-soluble if and only if every maximal chain of G of length 2 contains a proper subgroup M of G such that either some G-trace of M is subnormal or every G-boundary factor of M is a p′-group. This result give a positive answer to a recent open problem of Guo and Skiba. We also give some new characterizations of p-hypercyclically embedded subgroups.

Abstract:The Prime Graph Question for integral group rings asks if it is true that if the normalized unit group of the integral group ring of a finite group G contains an element of order pq, for some primes p and q, also G contains an element of that order. We answer this question for the three Conway sporadic simple groups after reducing it to a combinatorial question about Young tableaux and Littlewood-Richardson coefficients. This finishes work of V. Bovdi, A. Konovalov and S. Linton.

Abstract:For an arbitrary partition of the set of all primes, a sufficient condition for the -subnormality of a subgroup of a finite group is given. It is proved that the Kegel–Wielandt -problem has a positive solution in the class of all finite groups all of whose nonabelian composition factors are alternating groups, sporadic groups, or Lie groups of rank 1.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a smooth algebraic group over the field of rational functions of an excellent Dedekind scheme $S$ of equal characteristic $p>0.$ A Néron lft-model of $G$ is a smooth separated model $\mathscr{G} \to S$ of $G$ satisfying a universal property. Predicting whether a given $G$ admits such a model is a very delicate (and, in general, open) question if $S$ has infinitely many closed points, which is the subject of Conjecture I due to Bosch-Lütkebohmert-Raynaud. This conjecture was recently proven by T. Suzuki and the author if the residue fields of $S$ at closed points are perfect, but refuted in general. The aim of the present paper is two-fold: firstly, we give a new construction of counterexamples which is more general and provides a conceptual explanation for the only counterexamples known previously, as well as providing many new counterexamples. Secondly, we shall give a new and elementary proof of Conjecture I in the case of perfect residue fields. Both parts make use of the concept of weakly permawound unipotent groups recently introduced by Rosengarten.

Abstract:A question of F. Kwakkel and V. Markovic on existence of C^1-diffeomorphisms of closed surfaces that permute a dense collection of domains with bounded geometry is answered in the negative. In fact, it is proved that for closed surfaces of genus at least one such diffeomorphisms do not exist regardless of whether they have positive or zero topological entropy.

A zero-sum problem on G asks for the smallest positive integer k such that for any sequence a1,... ,ak of elements of G there exists a subsequence of required length the sum of whose terms vanishes. In this talk we will give a survey of problems and results in this field. In particular, we will talk about Olson's theorem on the Davenport constanst of an abelian p-group, Reiher's celebrated proof of the Kemnitz conjecture, and the speaker's extension of the Erd˝os-Ginzburg-Ziv theorem involving covers of Z.

Abstract:The existence of a solvable non-normal Fitting class F which is not a Lockett class but for which the Lockett Conjecture still holds are studied. We also prove that there exists an ω-local Fitting class F which does not satisfy the Lockett conjecture but the Lockett conjecture still holds under a given condition. As a consequence of our result, a generalized version of the Lausch's problem in the well-known Kourovka Notebook is answered.

Abstract:In 1987, the second author of this paper reported his conjecture, all finite simple groups $S$ can be characterized uniformly using the order of $S$ and the set of element orders in $S$, to Prof. J. G. Thompson. In their communications, Thompson posed his problem about the judgment of solvability of finite groups $G$. In this paper we give a positive answer for Thompson's problem if the prime graph of $G$ is not connection.

Abstract:AbstractIn this paper, it is shown that there exists a connected topological group which is not homeomorphic to any $\omega $-narrow topological group, and also that there exists a zero-dimensional topological group $G$ with neutral element $e$ such that the subspace $X = G\setminus \{e\}$ is not homeomorphic to any topological group. These two results give negative answers to two open problems in Arhangel’skii and Tkachenko [Topological Groups and Related Structures (Atlantis Press, Amsterdam, 2008)]. We show that if a compact topological group is a $K$-space, then it is metrisable. This result gives an affirmative answer to a question posed by Malykhin and Tironi [‘Weakly Fréchet–Urysohn and Pytkeev spaces’, Topology Appl. 104 (2000), 181–190] in the category of topological groups. We also prove that a regular $K$-space $X$ is a weakly Fréchet–Urysohn space if and only if $X$has countable tightness.
A generalization of the Brauer–Fowler theorem

Abstract:The famous Brauer–Fowler theorem states that the order of a finite simple group can be bounded in terms of the order of the centralizer of an involution. Using the classification of finite simple groups, we generalize this theorem and prove that if a simple locally finite group has an involution which commutes with at most n involutions, then the group is finite and its order is bounded in terms of n only. This answers a question of Strunkov from the Kourovka notebook.
