Abstract:This is a collection of questions that I am considering submitting to the next edition of the Kourovka Notebook of open questions in group theory. Most are questions I raised in papers between 1981 and the present; a few are new. I welcome feedback.

Abstract:Let G be a finite abelian group with |G| > 1. Let a (1), aEuro broken vertical bar, a (k) be k distinct elements of G and let b (1), aEuro broken vertical bar, b (k) be (not necessarily distinct) elements of G, where k is a positive integer smaller than the least prime divisor of |G|. We show that there is a permutation pi on {1, aEuro broken vertical bar,k} such that a (1) b (pi(1)), aEuro broken vertical bar, a (k) b (pi(k)) are distinct, provided that any other prime divisor of |G| (if there is any) is greater than k!. This in particular confirms the Dasgupta-Karolyi-Serra-Szegedy conjecture for abelian p-groups. We also pose a new conjecture involving determinants and characters, and show that its validity implies Snevily's conjecture for abelian groups of odd order. Our methods involve exterior algebras and characters.

Abstract:These are related, because the ideas involved in (1) form one of the main foundations for (2). More precisely, the proof of the Yau conjecture relies on an extension of the partial C estimate to metrics with conic singularities. Gang Tian has made claims to credit for these results. The purpose of this document is to rebut these claims on the grounds of originality, priority and correctness of the mathematical arguments. We acknowledge Tian’s many contributions to this field in the past and, partly for this reason, we have avoided raising our objections publicly over the last 15 months, but it seems now that this is the course we have to take in order to document the facts. In addition, this seems to us the responsible action to take and one we owe to our colleagues, especially those affected by these developments.

Abstract:Quivers, gauge theories and singular geometries are of great interest in both mathematics and physics. In this note, we collect a few open questions which have arisen in various recent works at the intersection between gauge theories, representation theory, and algebraic geometry. The questions originate from the study of supersymmetric gauge theories in different dimensions with different supersymmetries. Although these constitute merely the tip of a vast iceberg, we hope this guide can give a hint of possible directions in future research. This is an invited contribution to a special volume of Proyecciones, E. Gasparim, Ed., and it is the hope that the questions are specific enough for research projects aimed at PhD students.

Abstract:The near-completion of the program of endoscopy poses the question of what lies next. This article takes a broad view of ideas beyond the program of endoscopy, highlighting the connections among them, and emphasizing the relationship between local and global aspects. Central among those ideas is the one proposed in a 2000 lecture of R. P. Langlands, aiming to extract from the stable trace formula of a group G the bulk of those automorphic representations in the image of the conjectural functorial lift corresponding to a morphism of L-groups ${^LH} \to {^LG}$. With the extension of the problem of functoriality to the "relative" setting of spherical varieties and related spaces, some structure behind such comparisons has started to reveal itself. In a seemingly unrelated direction, a program initiated by Braverman--Kazhdan, also around 2000, to generalize the Godement--Jacquet proof of the functional equation to arbitrary L-functions, has received renewed attention in recent years. We survey ideas and developments in this direction, as well, and discuss the relationship between the two programs.

Abstract:This text is intended to become in the long run Chapter 3 of our long saga dedicated to Riemann, Ahlfors and Rohlin. Yet, as its contents evolved as mostly independent (due to our inaptitude to interconnect both trends as strongly as we wished), it seemed preferable to publish it separately. More factually, our account is an attempt to get familiarized with the current consensus about Hilbert's 16th in degree 8. This is a nearly finished piece of mathematics, thanks heroic breakthroughs by Viro, Fiedler, Korchagin, Shustin, Chevallier, Orevkov, yet still leaving undecided six tantalizing bosons among a menagerie of 104 logically possible distributions of ovals (respecting Bézout, Gudkov periodicity, and the Fiedler-Viro imparity law sieving away 4+36 schemes). This quest inevitably involves glimpsing deep into the nebula referrable to as Viro's patchworking, and the likewise spectacular obstructional laws of Fiedler, Viro, Shustin, Orevkov. In the overall, the game is much comparable to a pigeons hunting video-game, where 144 birds are liberated in nature, with some of them strong enough to fly higher and higher in the blue sky as to rejoin the stratospheric paradise of eternal life (construction of a scheme in the algebro-geometric category). Some other, less fortunate, birds were killed (a long time ago) and crashed down miserably over terrestrial crust (prohibition). Alas, the hunt is unfinished with still six birds, apparently too feeble to rally safely the paradise, yet too acrobatic for any homosapiens being skillful enough to shoot them down.

Abstract:Using algebraic transformations and equivalent reformulations we derive a number of new results from some earlier ones (by the author) in more accepted terms closely related to well-known conjectures of Bondy and Jung including a number of classical results in hamiltonian graph theory (due to Dirac, Ore, Nash-Williams, Bondy, Jung and so on) as special cases. A number of extended and strengthened versions of these conjectures are proposed.

Abstract:This document is a collection of comments that I wrote down while reading the first four chapters of the book "Discrete Groups, Expanding Graphs and Invariant Measures" by Alexander Lubotzky. Most of them are more detailed versions of proofs. Some imprecisions are pointed out and discussed, and some facts referenced in the book are proven. In the appendix we discuss topics of interest in relation to this book, which are however not necessary for its understanding. The aim of this document, which is not quite complete in that respect, is to provide, together with Lubotzky's book, a self-contained read.

Abstract:We study the question whether copies of $S^1$ in $\mathrm{SU}(3)$ can be amalgamated in a compact group. This is the simplest instance of a fundamental open problem in the theory of compact groups raised by George Bergman in 1987. Considerable computational experiments suggest that the answer is positive in this case. We obtain a positive answer for a relaxed problem using theoretical considerations.
