Abstract:The polymer industry in China has developed rapidly over the past 30 years, which can be greatly attributed to the active R&D conducted by Chinese scholars in polymer reaction engineering (PRE) and their cultivation of high level talents. The research focus on PRE in China has shifted from the application development to both applied and fundamental research at present. The PRE researchers closely collaborate with the enterprises and the world leading scholars. The research objective has been evolved from optimizing efficiency of polymerization processes to precise control of the structures of polymer chains and primary aggregates. This essay summarizes the history, characteristics, and latest progresses of the PRE research in China, with emphasis on the research activities at Zhejiang University.

Abstract:Thermoplastic resin modified thermoset resin is an efficient method to improve the toughening of the materials without sacrifice of glass temperatures. The blends are initially homogenous. With the proceeding of polymerization, phase separation occurrs and forms two phases structure. This article summarizes the progress in the research on polymerization-induced phase separation, especially the progress in the polymerization-induced phase separation of thermoplastic resin modified thermoset resin.

Abstract:The product from free radical and coordination polymerization generally are homopolymer or random copolymer with broad molecular weight distribution.In the past two decades,the breakthroughs in controlled/living radical and coordination polymerization and shuttling polymerization make it possible to use almost all vinyl monomers,particularly those cheap monomers,to produce more complex chain structures like di-,tri-block copolymer and gradient copolymers.With rational design,these copolymers might be high performance and high added value synthetic materials.The mechanisms and the up-to-date progress of these polymerization methods were introduced,and their possible applications were discussed.

Abstract:Rheological measurement has been a preferred approach to the characterization of the structure and phase behaviors for multi-component/multi-phase polymer systems, due to its sensitive response to the changes of structure for these heterogeneous polymers. In the present article, recent progresses in the studies on rheology for heterogeneous polymer systems including phase-separated polymeric blends and block copolymers are reviewed, mainly depending on the results by the authors' research group. By means of rheological measurements, not only some new fingerprints responsible for the evolution of morphology and structure concerning these polymer systems are obtained, also the corresponding results are significant for design and preparation of novel polymeric structural materials and functional materials.

Abstract:The main production processes for impact polypropylene copolymer were reviewed.Several fractionation methods were emphasized,including single solvent fractionation,more solvent fractionation,temperature rising elution fractionation(TREF),cross fractionation(CF)and temperature gradient extraction fractionation(TGEF).Characterization means for composition and chain structure of IPC were summarized,e.g.nuclear magnetic resonance(NMR),infrared spectrumetry-fourier transform(FT-IR) and differential scanning calorimetry(DSC).In phase morphology studying,application of technologies for scanning electron microscopy(SEM),transmission electric microscope(TEM),atomic force microscope(AFM),dynamic mechanical analysis(DMA) were introduced.

Abstract:As a key structural parameter, phase depicts the arrangement of atoms in materials. Normally, a nanomaterial exists in its thermodynamically stable crystal phase. With the development of nanotechnology, nanomaterials with unconventional crystal phases, which rarely exist in their bulk counterparts, or amorphous phase have been prepared using carefully controlled reaction conditions. Together these methods are beginning to enable phase engineering of nanomaterials (PEN), i.e. , the synthesis of nanomaterials with unconventional phases and the transformation between different phases, to obtain desired properties and functions. This Review summarizes the research progress in the field of PEN. First, we present representative strategies for the direct synthesis of unconventional phases and modulation of phase transformation in diverse kinds of nanomaterials. We cover the synthesis of nanomaterials ranging from metal nanostructures such as Au, Ag, Cu, Pd, and Ru, and their alloys; metal oxides, borides, and carbides; to transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) and 2D layered materials. We review synthesis and growth methods ranging from wet-chemical reduction and seed-mediated epitaxial growth to chemical vapor deposition (CVD), high pressure phase transformation, and electron and ion-beam irradiation. After that, we summarize the significant influence of phase on the various properties of unconventional-phase nanomaterials. We also discuss the potential applications of the developed unconventional-phase nanomaterials in different areas including catalysis, electrochemical energy storage (batteries and supercapacitors), solar cells, optoelectronics, and sensing. Finally, we discuss existing challenges and future research directions in PEN.

Abstract:Several techniques may be used for polypropylene modification,e.g.,solution process,melt process and solid phase graft copolymerization process,in which solid phase grafting is considered to be a high efficient and energy conserving method.Latest advances in the research of solid phase graft modification of polypropylene were reviewed in this paper.The influences of different factors,such as polypropylene structure,tacticity,particle diameters and porosity,were introduced.The effects of solid phase graft polypropylene system,including graft monomer,initiator and interfacial agent,as well as reaction technics were also discussed.

Abstract:With the background of supercritical olefins polymerization,The phase behavior of polyolefins in supercritical hydrocarbons was systemically introduced based on the characters of supercritical fluids.The effects of different polymer structure such as molecular weight,backbone branching on the phase behavior were generalized.Also,the effects of supercritical solvent quality and third component were introduced.Meantime,the solubility and diffusion of supercritical hydrocarbon in polyolefins were introduced and the impact of supercritical fluids on melting point of polymer was also included.

Abstract:This paper focuses on the structure-property relationship of a tung-oil-based thermosetting polymer, which was obtained by curing a newly developed tung-oil-based monomer (TOPERMA) with different styrene contents. Phase separation was first observed from transparency of the polymer matrixes and further studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The separation resulted from the incompatibility of maleinated oil-based resins and styrene, and might be influenced by curing temperature and reactivity ratios of the reactive monomers. By dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) storage modulus, glass transition temperature, and crosslink density of the bio-based polymer materials were investigated. The two effects of phase separation and crosslink density were used to correlate the microstructure factors with the obtained thermo-mechanical and mechanical properties of the tung-oil-based resins. It was found that the phase-separation effect was the dominating factor affecting the mechanical properties rather than other factors. The matrix of TOPERMA with 33% styrene exhibited good stiffness-toughness balance due to the minimum extent of phase separation it had. This developed eco-friendly bio-based polymer shows potential structural application as sheeting molding compounds. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Ethylene propylene random copolymer (PP-R) is a thermoplastic with many desirable properties including low cost, good processability and balanced mechanical properties. However, some shortages, namely poor impact property, particularly at low temperature, and large thermal expansion coefficient at higher temperatures, limit its wide application. The polymerization and post-polymerization modification are two main categories in which its performance is improved. Recently, more attention was paid to the latter due to its cheapness, effectiveness, being handy and environmentally friendly in features. In this paper, current situation in research and development for post-polymerization modification, including blending, nano-composite filling, crystal-modification, etc., were reviewed in detail. Current problems in this field were also introduced.

Abstract:Polymer synthetic chemistry is a scientific discipline which mainly studies molecular design, synthesis and modification of high molecular weight compounds. It provides indispensable materials that guarantee social progress, improvement of human living standards, and national security. Since the founding of The People's Republic of China 70 years ago, Chinese scholars have made significant contributions to the development of this field. Important achievements include, but not limited to, the design and synthesis of new monomers and polymers, development of highly efficient and environmentally benign catalysts and new polymerization reactions, optimization of key synthetic pathways, and establishment of relationships of new structures and properties. The research and development of synthetic polymer chemistry in China were reviewed, and the broad prospects of the development of various polymerization reactions, control of polymer topology as well as design, synthesis and polymerization of monomers from biomass sources were prospected.

Abstract:Polymeric porous media (PPM) are widely used as advanced materials, such as sound dampening foams, lithium-ion batteries, stretchable sensors, and biofilters. The functionality, reliability, and durability of these materials have a strong dependence on the microstructural patterns of PPM. One underlying mechanism for the formation of porosity in PPM is phase separation, which engenders polymer-rich and polymer-poor (pore) phases. Herein, the phase separation in polymer solutions is discussed from two different aspects: diffusion and hydrodynamic effects. For phase separation governed by diffusion, two novel morphological transitions are reviewed: "cluster-to-percolation" and "percolation-to-droplets," which are attributed to an effect that the polymer-rich and the solvent-rich phases reach the equilibrium states asynchronously. In the case dictated by hydrodynamics, a deterministic nature for the microstructural evolution during phase separation is scrutinized. The deterministic nature is caused by an interfacial-tension-gradient (solutal Marangoni force), which can lead to directional movement of droplets as well as hydrodynamic instabilities during phase separation.
