Research advances on expression and significance of microRNAs in eyes

Abstract:MicroRNAs(miRNA)are a class of endogenous,small,non-coding,regulatory RNA,which regulate gene expression in post-transcriptional level by inducing the breakdown of the targeted mRNAs and/or inhibition of translation from the mRNAs.It has become evident that miRNA are involved in many important biological processes,including developmental time,differentiation and proliferation,morphogenesis and apoptosis etc.Thus,more attention has been paid to their function during these processes.Many ocular miRNA have unique tissue and developmental stage specific expression patterns indicating they may have important function in the eye.It has becoming a hot subject of research that exploring miRNA'function during the ocular developmental and pathologic process.This review summarizes the current information about miRNA expression in the eye and their possible function.
