Abstract:This paper is concerned with an inverse wave-number-/frequency-dependent source problem for the Helmholtz equation. In two and three dimensions, the unknown source term is supposed to be compactly supported in spatial variables but independent on one spatial variable. The dependence of the source function on wave-number/frequency is supposed to be unknown. Based on the Fourier-transform and Dirichlet-Laplacian methods, we develop two efficient non-iterative numerical algorithms to recover the wave-number-dependent source. Uniqueness proof and increasing stability analysis are carried out if the boundary measurement data of Dirichlet kind are available. Numerical experiments are conducted to illustrate the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed methods.

Abstract:This paper is concerned with inverse acoustic source problems in an unbounded domain with dynamical boundary surface data of Dirichlet kind. The measurement data are taken at a surface far away from the source support. We prove uniqueness in recovering source terms of the form f(x)g(t) and f(x1, x2, t)h(x3), where g(t) and h(x3) are given and x = (x1, x2, x3) is the spatial variable in three dimensions. Without these a priori information, we prove that the boundary data of a family of solutions can be used to recover general source terms depending on both time and spatial variables. For moving point sources radiating periodic signals, the data recorded at four receivers are prove sufficient to uniquely recover the orbit function. Simultaneous determination of embedded obstacles and source terms was verified in an inhomogeneous background medium using the observation data of infinite time period. Our approach depends heavily on the Laplace transform.

Abstract:We study the inverse source problem for the Helmholtz equation from boundary Cauchy data with multiple wave numbers. The main goal of this paper is to study the uniqueness and increasing stability when the (pseudo)convexity or non-trapping conditions for the related hyperbolic problem are not satisfied. We consider general elliptic equations of the second order and arbitrary observation sites. To show the uniqueness we use the analytic continuation, the Fourier transform with respect to the wave numbers and uniqueness in the lateral Cauchy problem for hyperbolic equations. Numerical examples in 2 spatial dimension support the analysis and indicate the increasing stability for large intervals of the wave numbers, while analytic proofs of the increasing stability are not available.

Abstract:This paper investigates stability estimates for inverse source problems in the stochastic polyharmonic wave equation, where the source is represented by white noise. The study examines the well-posedness of the direct problem and derives stability estimates for identifying the strength of the random source. Assuming a priori information of the regularity and support of the source strength, the Hölder stability is established in the absence of a potential. In the more challenging case where a potential is present, the logarithmic stability estimate is obtained by constructing specialized solutions to the polyharmonic wave equation.

Abstract:We study the interior inverse source problem for the Helmholtz equation from boundary Cauchy data of multiple wave numbers. The main goal of this paper is to understand the dependence of increasing stability on the attenuation, both analytically and numerically. To implement it we use the Fourier transform with respect to the wave numbers, explicit bounds for analytic continuation, and observability bounds for the wave equation. In particular, by using Carleman estimates for the wave equation we trace the dependence of exact observability bounds on the constant damping. Numerical examples in 3 spatial dimension support the theoretical results.

Abstract:We study the increasing stability of an inverse source problem for the Helmholtz equation from limited-aperture far field data at multiple wave numbers. The measurement data are givenby the far field patterns $u^\infity(\hat{x},k)$ for all observation directions in some neighborhood of a fixed direction $\hat{x}$ and for all wave numbers k belonging to a finite interval $(0,K)$. In this paper, we discuss the increasing stability with respect to the width of the wavenumber interval $K>1$. In three dimensions we establish stability estimates of the $L^2$-norm and $H^{-1}$-norm of the source function from the far field data. The ill-posedness of the inverse source problem turns out to be of Hölder type while increasing the wavenumber band K. We also discuss an analytic continuation argument of the far-field data with respect to the wavenumbers at a fixed direction.

Abstract:This paper focuses on stability estimates of the inverse random source problems for the polyharmonic, electromagnetic, and elastic wave equations. The source is represented as a microlocally isotropic Gaussian random field, which is defined by its covariance operator in the form of a classical pseudo-differential operator. The inverse problem is to determine the strength function of the principal symbol by exploiting the correlation of far-field patterns associated with the stochastic wave equations at a single frequency. For the first time, we show in a unified framework that the optimal Lipschitz-type stability can be attained across all the considered wave equations through the utilization of correlation-based data.

Abstract:This paper concerns the inverse source problems for the time-harmonic elastic and electromagnetic wave equations. The goal is to determine the external force and the electric current density from boundary measurements of the radiated wave field, respectively. The problems are challenging due to the ill-posedness and complex model systems. Uniqueness and stability are established for both of the inverse source problems. Based on either continuous or discrete multi-frequency data, a unified increasing stability theory is developed. The stability estimates consist of two parts: the Lipschitz type data discrepancy and the high frequency tail of the source functions. As the upper bound of frequencies increases, the latter decreases and thus becomes negligible. The increasing stability results reveal that ill-posedness of the inverse problems can be overcome by using multi-frequency data. The method is based on integral equations and analytical continuation, and requires the Dirichlet data only. The analysis employs asymptotic expansions of Green's tensors and the transparent boundary conditions by using the Dirichlet-to-Neumann maps. In addition, for the first time, the stability is established on the inverse source problems for both the Navier and Maxwell equations.

Abstract:We present stability estimates for the inverse source problem of the stochastic Helmholtz equation in two and three dimensions by either near-field or far-field data. The random source is assumed to be a microlocally isotropic generalized Gaussian random function. For the direct problem, by exploring the regularity of the Green function, we demonstrate that the direct problem admits a unique bounded solution with an explicit integral representation, which enhances the existing regularity result. For the case using near-field data, the analysis of the inverse problem employs microlocal analysis to achieve an estimate for the Fourier transform of the micro-correlation strength by the near-field correlation data and a high-frequency tail. The stability follows by showing the analyticity of the data and applying a novel analytic continuation principle. The stability estimate by far-field data is derived by investigating the correlation of the far-field data. The stability estimate consists of the Lipschitz type data discrepancy and the logarithmic stability. The latter decreases as the upper bound of the frequency increases, which exhibits the phenomenon of increasing stability.

Abstract:We are concerned with time-dependent inverse source problems in elastodynamics. The source term is supposed to be the product of a spatial function and a temporal function with compact support. We present frequency-domain and time-domain approaches to show uniqueness in determining the spatial function from wave fields on a large sphere over a finite time interval. The stability estimate of the temporal function from the data of one receiver and the uniqueness result using partial boundary data are proved. Our arguments rely heavily on the use of the Fourier transform, which motivates inversion schemes that can be easily implemented. A Landweber iterative algorithm for recovering the spatial function and a non-iterative inversion scheme based on the uniqueness proof for recovering the temporal function are proposed. Numerical examples are demonstrated in both two and three dimensions.

Abstract:This paper is concerned with inverse source problems for the acoustic wave equation in the full space R^3, where the source term is compactly supported in both time and spatial variables. The main goal is to investigate increasing stability for the wave equation in terms of the interval length of given parameters (e.g., bandwith of the temporal component of the source function). We establish increasing stability estimates of the L^2 -norm of the source function by using only the Dirichlet boundary data. Our method relies on the Huygens principle, the Fourier transform and explicit bounds for the continuation of analytic functions.

Abstract:This study addresses the inverse source problem for the fractional diffusion-wave equation, characterized by a source comprising spatial and temporal components. The investigation is primarily concerned with practical scenarios where data is collected subsequent to an incident. We establish the uniqueness of either the spatial or the temporal component of the source, provided that the temporal component exhibits an asymptotic expansion at infinity. Taking anomalous diffusion as a typical example, we gather the asymptotic behavior of one of the following quantities: the concentration on partial interior region or at a point inside the region, or the flux on partial boundary or at a point on the boundary. The proof is based on the asymptotic expansion of the solution to the fractional diffusion-wave equation. Notably, our approach does not rely on the conventional vanishing conditions for the source components. We also observe that the extent of uniqueness is dependent on the fractional order.

The well-posedness is established for the direct source problems, which ensures the existence and uniqueness of solutions. The stability estimates are deduced for the inverse source problems, which aim to determine the strength of the random source. To enhance the stability of the inverse source problems, we incorporate a priori information regarding the regularity and support of the strength. In the case of homogeneous media, a Hölder stability estimate is established, providing a quantitative measure of the stability for reconstructing the source strength. For the more challenging scenario of inhomogeneous media, a logarithmic stability estimate is presented, capturing the intricate interactions between the source and the varying medium properties.

Abstract:By using the Strichartz esitmate and Picard iteration, we prove the subcritical(critical in some cases) global solution in $C_t H_x^s\cap C_t^1 H^{s-1}_x$ with small data for semilinear wave equation with nonlinearity of type $(\partial u)^k$($k\ge 1+\frac{4}{n-1}\vee 2$ and $(n,k)\neq (3,3)$). For $(n,k)=(3,3)$, we get the almost global existence. In addition, we give the global existence with radial data when $k> 1+\frac{2}{n-1}\vee 2$.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the inverse source problem for the biharmonic wave equation. Mathematically, we characterize the radiating sources and non-radiating sources at a fixed wavenumber. We show that a general source can be decomposed into a radiating source and a non-radiating source. The radiating source can be uniquely determined by Dirichlet boundary measurements at a fixed wavenumber. Moreover, we derive a Lipschitz stability estimate for determining the radiating source. On the other hand, the non-radiating source does not produce any scattered fields outside the support of the source function. Numerically, we propose a novel source reconstruction method based on Fourier series expansion by multi-wavenumber boundary measurements. Numerical experiments are presented to verify the accuracy and efficiency of the proposed method.
