Abstract:Many steel frames suffered from unexpected brittle fracturing of beam-to-column connections in the Northridge earthquake. It was also found that most of the connections which failed were due to fracturing at the complete penetration weld and heat-affected zone of adjacent component between the bottom flange of the beam and the column flange plate.Although the reliability of field welding is generally blamed for the fracturing of the connection,a lack of deformation capacity is also a key factor.Pure steel joints are mostly used in seismic tests of joints, namely concrete floor slabs on steel beams are not considered. For the fracture of connections at the bottom flange of the beam, the contribution of the floor slabs to the strength and stiffness of the connection may increase the possibility of the fracture. The effect of composite action on the fracture of the connections are examined by finite element method.
