Abstract:The properties and the diazotisation process of 1-ethyl-5-cyano-6-hydroxy-4-methyl-5-amino-2-pyridone were described. The conditions of the coupling reaction were also discussed and a series of new azo dyes using 1-ethyl-5-cyano-6-hydroxy-4-methyl-3-amino-2-pyridone as diazo components were synthesized. The absorption properties of these new azo dyes were investigated in various solvents and the mixture solvent of chloroform/DMSO with different volume ratios.
Novel heptamethine thiapyrylium infrared laser dyes of superior photostability tunable from 1.35 to 1.65 μm

Abstract:Three new heptamethine thiapyrylium dyes containing a disubstituted amino group on the meso position in their bridged chain were investigated. 4.30 to 5.10% of the pump energy was converted to an intense infrared pulse with wavelength between 1.35 and 1.65 μm. The relation between lasing efficiency and dye concentration was also studied. These dyes show a remarkable photostability upon 1.06 μm laser excitation and excellent storage stability without degassing.

Abstract:The incorporation of aggregation-induced emission (AIE) luminogens provides a molecule with enhanced fluorescent emission in the solid state. A representative AIEgen compound is tetraphenylethene (TPE). A series of new conjugates of quinolone derivatives with TPE units (1a - 1f) was synthesized and characterized. The influence on the photophysics of 1a - 1e with a variety of functional groups was investigated systematically by spectroscopic methods and simulated by density-functional theory calculations. A centrosymmetric compound donor-acceptor-donor-type compound 1f with two TPE moieties proved to be the most promising multi-functional material, it exhibited tri-colored (489-569 nm) fluorescence characteristics in tetrahydrofuran-H2O solution with a different water fraction and intense tri-colored solvatochromic (blue, green, and yellow) behaviors. These compounds could be applied as promising acid-base gas probe based on their evident color switch. Compounds 1a - 1f showed the advantage of being a potential piezochromic material.

Abstract:Two new branched pyridinium inner salt dyes, 2,6-di[2-(N-ethyl-carbazole-3-yl)vinyl]-N-(3-sulfonatepropyl)pyridinium, inner salt (2) and 2,4,6-tri[2-(N-ethyl-carbazole-3-yl)vinyl]-N-(3-sulfonatepropyl)pyridinium, inner salt (3), with N-ethyl-carbazolyl as electron donor group and pyridine cation as electron acceptor group have been synthesized. Their single- and two-photon related fluorescence properties in various solvents have also been examined. These dyes exhibit stronger fluorescence emission relative to the corresponding linear counterpart and common pyridinium dyes with discrete cation and anion components. Three-branched organic dye 3 has a high fluorescence quantum yield as 0.12 and exhibits strong orange two-photon excited fluorescence at 608nm in THF with large two-photon absorption cross-section being 606GM.

Abstract:A novel D–π–A–π–D type thiophene pyrimidine derivative, 2,2′-thiophene-4, 6-bis (4-N,N-diethylbenzene ethenyl) pyrimidine (L), was designed, synthesized via Knoevenagel and Suzuki coupling reactions, and fully characterized. The results of X-ray diffraction analysis revealed that single crystal of L belongs to P212121 non-centrosymmetric space group, and the whole molecular skeleton exhibits a good coplanarity. Systematic photophysical properties were investigated for L. The connections between the properties and structure were explained relying on theoretical calculation. The thiophene pyrimidine derivative shows strong third-order nonlinear optical response and large two-photon absorption (2PA) cross section in high polar solvents. Finally, preliminary exploration in biological imaging also has been carried out, it shows a good biological application prospect.

Abstract:Novel 9-cyano-pyrrolo[1,2-a][1,10]phenanthrolines 6a–d were obtained by an efficient one-pot regioselective reaction between 1,10-phenanthrolinium bromides 2a–d and acrylonitrile as a dipolarophile, in the presence of triethylamine and tetrakis-pyridino-cobalt(II) dichromate (TPCD) as oxidizing agents. The optical properties of the compounds were investigated through UV–Vis spectrophotometry and steady-state photoluminescence measurements, while their structures were elucidated by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The structural characterization revealed that the molecular structures of the four compounds were stabilized by hydrogen bonds and π–π interactions.

Abstract:α, β-Diarylacrylonitrile halides were prepared by condensation of appropriate arylaldehydes and arylacetonitrile halides using a catalytic amount of NaOCH3 at room temperature. The diarylamines were reacted with various α, β-diarylacrylonitrile halides to afford several triphenylamine compounds, which displayed efficient hole transportation in the presence of Pd(OAc)2/P(o-tolyl)3 catalyst, thereby constituting organic light emitting device materials. The novel triphenylamine derivatives were characterized using FTIR, 1H NMR, 13C NMR, MS and elemental analysis. The UV–vis absorption and photoluminescence spectra of the compounds were investigated. The lowest absorption band of α, β-diarylacrylonitrile-containing, triphenylamine derivatives, which occurred at ∼400 nm, was assigned to charge-transfer transitions with an emission at 500–574 nm in different solutions and in the solid state.

Abstract:Novel blue-light-emitting fluorene derivatives 5a-c and 7a-c containing bulky and highly emissive groups, namely pyrene, 10-phenylanthracene-9-yl and 10-(4'-diphenylaminophenyl)anthracene-9-yl groups, as well as hole-injecting/transporting triarylamines were synthesized. Single crystals of compounds 5a, 5c, 7a, and 7c were grown and their crystal structures were determined by X-ray diffraction. The four fluorene derivatives have nonplanar molecular structures, which reduce the intermolecular interaction and the likelihood of molecular aggregation or excimer formation. No unwanted long-wavelength emission was observed in the photoluminescence (PL) spectra of the 5a-c and 7a-c thin films. Their PL spectra reveal excellent thermal stability after annealing treatment under air and ambient light. All of the six compounds show high fluorescence quantum yields and outstanding thermal stabilities. The 2-aryl and 2,7-diaryl substituents at the fluorene molecule have a significant effect on the photophysical properties and the thermal characteristics. The six compounds show almost the same energy levels for the highest occupied molecular orbitals (HOMOs) of about -5.20 eV, which allows effective hole injection. The C2- and C7-aryl substituents play a relatively less-important role in the HOMO energy levels, which depend mainly on the triphenylamino groups at the C9 position. The molecular orbitals, excitation energy, and emission energy were calculated to explain the real origin of their photophysical characteristics. The HOMOs are mainly localized on the triphenylamino groups at the C9 position, while the lowest unoccupied molecular orbitals (LUMOs) have a significant orbital density at the C2- and/or C7-aryl substituents. Pure-blue-light-emitting diodes based on 2,7-diaryl-9,9-di(triarylamino)fluorenes were fabricated.

Abstract:Four novel photochromic dithienylethenes compounds, 1,2-bis[2-methyl-5(p-fluorophenyl)-3-thienyl]perfluorocyclo-pentene (1a), 1, 2-bis[2-methyl-5(p-ethox yphenyl)-3-thienyl]perfluorocyclopentene (2a), 1,2-bis[2-methyl-5(p-N,N-dimethylaminophenyl)- 3 -thienyl]perfluorocyclopentene (3a) and 1,2-bis(2-methyl-5-naphthalene-3-thienyl)perfluorocyclopentene (4a) were synthesized. Their optoelectronic properties, such as photochromism in solution as well as in PMMA amorphous, fluorescence and electrochemistry properties were systematically investigated. These dithienylethenes have shown good photochromic behavior both in solution and in PMMA amorphous film. All of them exhibited relatively strong fluorescence. With the increase of their concentration in a THF solution, their fluorescence spectra showed a bathochromic shift. The irreversible anodic oxidation of la, 3a and 4a occurred when performing cyclic voltammetry tests. Moreover, dithienylethene la showed remarkable multi-color electrochromic properties during the anodic polarization. In addition, photo-mode multi-step optical storage using 2a and 3a as recording medium was performed successfully.

Abstract:Three different pyridinium salts with I-, BPh4- or [Eu(TTA)(4)](-) anions were synthesized and fully characterized. The crystal structures and H-1-NMR spectra of the dipyridinium cations showed that the coplanarity of the cation was controlled by the type of anion. Their one- and two-photon absorption properties were studied in combination with their structure. The two-photon absorption properties were shown to be tunable by the counter-anions. A pyridinium salt containing L[Eu(TTA)(4)](2) was selected as a marker for use in fluorescence microscopy to image living cells. This salt clearly displayed the cell structure and was used successfully in two-photon excited fluorescence microscopy.

Abstract:The six new bis-1H-pyrazoles were synthesized by the cyclization of bis-β-diketones with hydrazine hydrate in methanol. Their structures were characterized by IR, 1HNMR, ESI-MS and elemental analysis. The fluorescence properties of these bis-1H-pyrazoles were studied in detail by UV–vis and fluorescence spectroscopic techniques. These compounds exhibited violet fluorescence emission at 392–398 nm and demonstrated high extinction coefficients. The results indicated that the fluorescence intensity and quantum yield could be significantly enhanced by introducing phenyl moieties into pyrazole ring. Especially, these bis-1H-pyrazoles exhibited large Stokes shifts (∆λ = 140−156 nm) due to the rotation of the π-conjugated substituent in their molecular structures. In addition, the crystal structure of the hydrate (a-H2O) for 2,6-dimethyl-3- (5-methyl-1H-pyrazol-3-yl)-5-(3-methyl-1H-pyrazol-5-yl)pyridine (a) was studied using X-ray crystal structure analysis. In the solid state, water molecules in dimers interact with adjacent bis-1H-pyrazole molecules through intermolecular hydrogen-bonding interactions to form a three-dimensional hydrogen bond network structure.
A Novel Synthetic Method for 6-Bromo-N-arylthieno[2,3-d]pyrimidin-4-amines

Abstract:In this paper, a novel synthetic method for 6-bromo-N-[3-chloro-4-(3-fluorobenzyloxy)phenyl]thieno[2,3-d]pyrimidin-4-amine was reported, which began from cheap 2,5-dihydroxy-1,4-dithiane and malononitrile, following Gewald reaction, aromatic ring bromonation, condensation, cyclization and then Dimroth rearrangement reaction. The over yield was 56.9%. The structures of synthesized compounds were determined by (1)H NMR, IR, MS and HRMS techniques. Employing the same synthetic method, a series of 6-bromo-N-arylthieno[2,3-d]pyrimidin-4-amine derivatives were synthesized. The results showed that the advantages of this method were simply available starting meterials, easily conducted procedure, relatively high yield, and easily purification of the products.

Abstract:Six centrosymmetric D-(pi-A)(3) structural triphenylamine derivatives that can be used as two- photon photopolymerization and optical data storage chromophores, tris[ 4-( 4- pyridylethenyl) phenyl] amine ( 1), tris[ 4-( 2- pyridylethenyl) phenyl] amine ( 2), tris( 4- cyanoethenylphenyl) amine ( 3), tris[ 4- butylacrylatephenyl] amine ( 4), tris[ 4- methylacrylatephenyl] amine ( 5) and tris[ 4- acrylicethenylphenyl] amine ( 6), have been successfully synthesized via a triple palladium-catalyzed Heck coupling reaction, and the novel chromophores were fully characterized by elemental analysis, IR, H-1-NMR and ESIMS. The structure for 3 was determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction study. One- and two-photon absorption and fluorescence in various solvents were experimentally investigated. Two-photon initiated polymerization microfabrication and optical data recording experiments were carried out under 780 nm laser radiation, and the possible polymerization mechanism is discussed based on theoretical calculations. All the six chromophores have relatively large two-photon absorption crosssections, and exhibit optical memory and highly efficient two-photon initiated polymerization abilities.

Abstract:Two novel bent-shaped D–π–A–π–D chromophore molecules, 2-pyrazolyl-4,6-bis (4-N,N-ethylaminostyryl)pyrimidine (Z1) and 2-imidazolyl-4,6 –bis- (4-N,N- ethylaminostyryl) pyrimidine (Z2), were synthesized and fully characterized. It was found that the both bent-shaped chromophore molecules crystallize in the orthorhombic system, space group of P212121. The photophysical properties and the connections between structure and properties of the chromophores were investigated both experimentally and theoretically. It was revealed that both absorption and single-photon excited fluorescence (SPEF) spectra show remarkable bathochromic shifts with increasing polarity of the solvents. The two chromophores have strong two-photon excited fluorescence and large two-photon absorption cross-sections in the near-infrared range. Additionally, two-photon microscopy (TPM) fluorescent imaging of BEL-7402 cells labeled with the Z1 and Z2 revealed their potential application as a biological fluorescent probe.
A Facile Synthetic Method and New Derivatives of Phthalorubines

Abstract:Phthalorubines ( Pr s), a new series of fused-ring dyes, with novel planar structure, interesting synthetic mechanism, characteristic spectra properties and multiple coordinated patterns, have potential applications in different fields. During the start-up stage for phthalorubine research, a molecule without any substituents, such as Pr-2, is the most important compound for both synthetic studies and application exploration. Reported method to obtain Pr-2 is via decyanation of Pr-1 , the first phthalorubine compound easily synthesized from phthalonitrile. However, the process of decyanation requires ex-pensive Rh(I) complex as catalyst, which also make the reaction difficult to amplify. These disadvantages greatly limit fol-low-up studies of phthalorubines. A facile method to synthesize Pr-2 could effectively accelerate the development and sub-sequent studies of phthalorubines. Herein, we reported a facile method to synthesize Pr-2 via Ni(II) catalyzed process with high yield of 58%, while this method could be amplified to more than 10 grams. Moreover, during the process of tuning reaction conditions, two new kinds of phthalorubines were detected, with cyano group ( Pr-1.5 ) and methyl group ( Pr-1.6 ), re-spectively. According to the results of different conditions, Pr-1.5 is the key intermediate product from Pr-1 to Pr-2 . Methyl group in molecule Pr-1.6 is derived from trimethylaluminum, which also works as Lewis acid in the process of decyanation. The structures of Pr-1.5 and Pr-1.6 were further confirmed by X-ray single crystal diffraction, exhibiting planar structures with strong π - π interaction. In addition, different substituents greatly influence the packing patterns of phthalorubines, while molecules Pr-1.5 pack as “head-tail” pattern and Pr-1.6 as “head-head” pattern. We also studied the photophysical properties of these two new phthalorubines. Pr-1.5 and Pr-1.6 exhibit similar absorption spectra to reported compounds but totally different emission efficiencies. It suggests electron donating groups is beneficial to high quantum yield. The facile synthetic method and properties reported in this work would greatly help the development of phthalorubines.

Abstract:We describe here, for the first time, that 1-cyano-3-benzoyl-1,2,3,10b-tetrahydropyrrolo[2,1-a]phthalazine (8), prepared by 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition of 2-phenacyl phthalazinium bromide (6a) with acrylonitrile (7a), can be aromatized by tetrakis-pyridine cobalt (II) dichromate (TPCD) to give 1-cyano-3-benzoylpyrrolo[2,1-a]phthalazine (9a) in good yield. Furthermore, a general and convenient one-pot procedure for preparation of pyrrolo[2,1-a]phthalazines (9a-p) was developed by 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition of phthalazinium N-ylides (6a-c) with alkenes (7a-g) in the presence of TPCD.

Abstract:A series of transition metal- n cyanopyridines ( i.e. pyridine- n-carbonitrile; n = 2, 3, 4) complexes with one-dimensional (1-D) structures, [CuCl2(pyridine-3-carbonitrile)2] n, [CuCl2(pyridine-4-carbonitrile)2] n and [CoCl2(pyridine-4-carbonitrile)2] n, have been synthesised via hydrothermal reactions and structurally characterised by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. All these complexes feature infinite 1-D chain-like structures. Photoluminescent investigation reveals that the title complexes display strong emissions which may originate from π→π* charge-transfer interaction of the ligands.
