Abstract:We report the design and synthesis of a novel cationic AIE-gen, i.e., (E)-TPEDEPy-DBz, which can be derived from a facile synthetic route. (E)-TPEDEPy-DBz is a stereo-pure isomer and shows evident AIE properties with yellow-greenish emission in the solid state (ΦF = 43.7%). Distinct from most of the ionic AIE-gens reported in the literature, which are usually exemplified by their water solubility and the capacity for interaction with charged biological species, (E)-TPEDEPy-DBz demonstrated moderate solvatochromism and evident mechanoluminochromism behaviours. The emission of (E)-TPEDEPy-DBz can be switched between yellow-greenish in the crystalline state to red-orange in the amorphous state by grinding and fuming treatments. Due to the AIE-characteristics, cationic modification and the thus-acquired water solubility, (E)-TPEDEPy-DBz performed as a sensitive fluorescent probe to detect DNA in Tris-HCl buffer solution. More importantly, (E)-TPEDEPy-DBz showed good membrane permeability and cell viability, and the potentiality to be used as a mitochondria-specific probe working in a fluorescence turn-on mode.

Abstract:Novel donor-π-acceptor dyes bearing the pyrimidine unit as an electron-withdrawing group have been synthesized by using combination of two processes, based on the microwave-assisted Suzuki cross-coupling reaction and nucleophilic aromatic substitution of hydrogen. Spectral properties of the obtained dyes in six aprotic solvents of various polarities have been studied by ultraviolet–visible and fluorescence spectroscopy. In contrast to the absorption spectra, fluorescence emission spectra displayed a strong dependence from their solvent polarities. The nature of the observed long wavelength maxima has been elucidated by means of quantum chemical calculations. The electrochemical properties of these dyes have been investigated by using cyclic voltammetry, while their photovoltaic performance was evaluated by a device fabrication study. The experimental and calculation data show that all of the dyes can be regarded as potentially good photosensitizers for dye-sensitized solar cells.

Multiple Stimuli Responses of Stereo-Isomers of AIE-Active Ethynylene-Bridged and Pyridyl-Modified Tetraphenylethene.

Abstract:Luminescent molecules with aggregation-induced emission (AIE) property or AIE-active luminogens (AIE-gens) are typical stimuli-responsive materials. Many AIE-gens have shown luminescent responses to mechano-, thermo-, electro-, vapo-, and/or solvato-stimulus, but the detailed structure-property relationship has been addressed for only a few of them. Here, we report a tetraphenylethene (TPE) derivative with pyridyl modifiers and ethynylene bridges. The (Z)- and (E)-isomers are clearly purified, and both of them are AIE-active and demonstrate multiple luminescent responses to external stimuli. Distinct from other reported TPE derivatives, the two isomers show negative solvatochromism due to the large dipole in the ground electronic state. By correlating with the single crystal structures, the subtle differences in quantum efficiency and emission peak wavelength of the solids of the (Z)- and (E)-isomers are rationally explained. Moreover, the ground powder of the (E)-isomer can recover its emission color from green to blue in the air at room temperature but the (Z)-isomer cannot. This difference is interpreted by a mechanism of water-triggered conformational variation, which depends on the hydrogen bond formation between pyridyl moieties and water molecules in the air. In addition to the reversible emission color changes by cyclic grinding-fuming treatments, both of the isomers exhibit a reversible luminescent response to acid-base treatments by switching the emission color between green (basic) and yellow (acid), owing to the incorporation of pyridyl units into the molecule. The unprecedented multiple stimuli-responsive behaviors and clear mechanism explanations allow this kind of AIE-gens to be promising smart materials.

Abstract:Organic chromic materials with photochromic and electrochromic properties are promising materials for photoelectric applications. Despite some reports indicating the presence of these properties in aromatic imide derivatives, the advancement of their enduring discoloration performance remains an unresolved challenge. Herein, we incorporated of charge-assisted anion-π interactions into aromatic imide derivatives as a strategy for improving the stability of generated free-radical, and a series of pyridinium-annelated perylene diimides salts (PAPDI-X, X = I − , Br − , Cl − , NO 3 − , PF 6 − ) were synthesized. With variations in the electron-donating capabilities (Lewis basicity) of the anions, the nature of anion-PDI interactions undergoes a transition from non-chromogenic anion-π interaction to chromogenic anion-induced electron transfer (ET) phenomenon, and these interactions have been fully characterized by UV/Vis, NMR, and EPR spectroscopies. Among the evaluated anions, Br- anion with moderate Lewis basicity participates in ET with PAPDI by light or voltage stimuli, and generate stable PAPDI-Br •− radical anion and PAPDI-Br 2- dianion in aprotic solvent or in solid state, thus making PAPDI-Br exhibit distinctive photo/electrochromic dual responsive behavior based on radical formation. This meaningful design provides new concepts for the design of organic chromic materials and shows great prospects in optoelectrical materials.

Abstract:Selective degradation of the target pollutants allows delicate manipulation of the environmental remediation process via photocatalysis, and has attracted much attention in recent years. Herein, we report the preparation and photocatalytic behaviors of an organic semiconductor of phthalimide (PI). It is found that PI could effectively degrade the azo-dyes under UV irradiation in both heterogeneous and homogeneous reaction systems, which is rarely reported for the photodegradation of the dyes. In comparison, the halogenation of PI has an adverse effect on the photocatalytic activity of corresponding PI derivatives. Moreover, PI is used to photodegrade the mixtures of azo-dyes and non-azo dyes. It is found that PI achieves highly selective photodegradation of the azo-dyes in a heterogeneous reaction system, while its halogenated derivatives exhibit lower selectivity. By contrast, no preferential photodegradation is observed in the homogeneous methanol solution. It is proposed that the regular 7C-7C stacking conjugated structure of the PI based molecules are responsible for the selective photodegradation behaviors. The work offers new approaches for the development of advanced organic molecule photocatalysts with desirable features including selective photodegradation and efficient degradation of dyes in both hetero-geneous and homogeneous photocatalysis.

Abstract:The incorporation of aggregation-induced emission (AIE) luminogens provides a molecule with enhanced fluorescent emission in the solid state. A representative AIEgen compound is tetraphenylethene (TPE). A series of new conjugates of quinolone derivatives with TPE units (1a - 1f) was synthesized and characterized. The influence on the photophysics of 1a - 1e with a variety of functional groups was investigated systematically by spectroscopic methods and simulated by density-functional theory calculations. A centrosymmetric compound donor-acceptor-donor-type compound 1f with two TPE moieties proved to be the most promising multi-functional material, it exhibited tri-colored (489-569 nm) fluorescence characteristics in tetrahydrofuran-H2O solution with a different water fraction and intense tri-colored solvatochromic (blue, green, and yellow) behaviors. These compounds could be applied as promising acid-base gas probe based on their evident color switch. Compounds 1a - 1f showed the advantage of being a potential piezochromic material.
Design of Imidazo[1,2-a]pyridine-Based Donor–Acceptor Chromophores through a Multicomponent Approach

Abstract:A series of donor-acceptor chromophores was synthesized bearing a 3-aminoimidazo[1,2- a ]pyridine donor motive. Through DFT calculations, different combinations of the ImPy donor motive and different electron acceptors were assessed. In combination with an anthraquinone acceptor, the calculated Δ E ST values were in range to suggest that these compounds would emit via thermally activated delayed fluorescence. Based on these findings, a series of ImPy-Aq emitters with different geometries and substitution patterns was synthesized through GBB-3CR and Suzuki coupling reactions. According to preliminary experimental data, the compounds were only slightly emissive at ambient temperatures due to a combination of low radiative rates and competing non-radiative deactivation pathways. Abstract:A series of novel donor-acceptor pyrid-2-ones was synthesized. The influence of a donor group on the photophysical properties of chromophores in solution was shown by varying the methoxy group position in the electron-rich aromatic ring. The effect of the π-linker was also demonstrated by the comparison of the D-π-A pyridone with its spacer-free analogue (D-A) and with the chromophore bearing an additional thiophene bridge (D-π-π-A). It was found that presence of a π-linker plays a crucial role in the implementation of an intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) from the donor aryl moiety to the pyridone acceptor. Thus, for the synthesized D-A, D-π-A and D-π-π-A derivatives, photoluminescence quantum yield in DMSO solution decreases from 56.8 to 4.3 and 3.5%, respectively, along with a strong bathochromic shift both for absorption (66 nm) and emission (162 nm) bands. Also, the possibility to shift the equilibrium in DMSO solution towards either the pyridone form or the anionic form by addition of strong acid (TFA) and base (DBN) respectively was shown. Drastic changes in photoluminescence of solutions showed the prospects for application of the synthesized donor-acceptor pyridone derivatives as naked-eye acid-base indicators in organic media.

Abstract:Two novel heavy atom-free pure organic pyrimidine-based asymmetric donor-acceptor type emitters were designed and synthesized. The twisted D-A conformation was favored to produce small ΔEst and effective ISC. Excitingly, PMBT and CzPMBT showed precious fluorescence-RTP-TADF triple emission. Furthermore, PMBT responded to external stimuli of volatile solvents fumigation and different intensity grinding to generate a multicolor switching system, which included charming white light due to the dual emission of fluorescence and phosphorescence. Crystallographic analysis was conducted to explain the reasons for the differences in photophysical properties produced by the two compounds. This research provides insight into the mechanism of action of RTP, TADF and multicolor MCL through intermolecular interactions and conformational modulation.

Abstract:Fourteen triphenylamine derivatives functionalized with fluorophenyl, methoxyphenyl, and pyridinyl groups as respective donors and acceptors were synthesized and characterized. Their photophysical properties were systematically investigated in various solvents with different polarities. The solvent-dependent Stokes shifts of these compounds were observed and analyzed by the Lippert-Mataga equation. The synthesized compounds, especially tris(4-(pyridin-4-yl)phenyl) amine, presented pH-dependent absorptions and emissions, indicating that these compounds might be used as pH sensors.

Abstract:Based on pyridylimidazo[1,2-a]pyridine-BODIPY compound 1, we have prepared three halogenated derivatives 2–4, and eight mono-/dual-arylated pyridylimidazo[1,2-a]pyridine-BODIPY conjugates 5–12. Single crystal X-ray diffraction analyses of 2, 4 and 6 revealed C−H⋯F interactions between molecules in the solid-state. Large effects of different electron-donating substituents (phenyl-, 4-(methoxy)phenyl-, 4-(diphenylamino)phenyl-, and 4-(dimethylamino)phenyl-) on absorption and fluorescence were detected, and the emission colors were successfully tuned from green to NIR. Upon addition of H+, special colorimetric and spectroscopic variations for 4-dimethylaminophenyl- analogues 9 and 10 have been observed. DFT and TDDFT calculations for all new compounds have been carried out for deep understanding of their electronic transitions at ground states. The living cell imaging results of compound 7 suggest its promising utility in biological area.

Abstract:Two centrosymmetric D-π-D type triphenylamine chromophores with long π-conjugated bridge and strong electron-donating moiety were designed, synthesized and fully characterized. The crystal analysis revealed that multiple CH⋯π interactions existed in two chromophores, which played a crucial role in generating molecular 1D chains and 2D layers structures. Linear and nonlinear optical properties of the chromophores were systematically investigated with the aid of theoretical calculations. Two chromophores both exhibited intense and wide-dispersed one-photon/two-photon excited fluorescence, bear prodigious 2PA cross section (δ). Especially for Dye2, with ethyoxyl groups, displayed the strong 2PA activity, large cross-sections (δmax>16,000GM) and high NLO efficiency (δmax/MW>16GM/(g·mol)) in the range of 680-830nm in DMF. In addition, one- and two-photon fluorescence microscopy images of HepG2 cells incubated with Dye2 were obtained and found that Dye2 could effectively uptake toward living cells and display a uniformly localized in cytosolic space.

Abstract:A series of symmetrical 1,5-naphthyridine compounds with donor-acceptor-donor (D-A-D) architecture and different chromophores were synthesized and characterized. Their thermal, optical and electrochemical properties were investigated systematically. These compounds show robust thermal property with high phase transition temperatures (above 247 degrees C). In addition, all these compounds exhibit intense absorption bands in UV and visible region, which arise from the intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) transition between the donor and acceptor segments. The electron-donating chmmophores on the central naphthyridine cause significant bathochromic shifts of the low energy ICT absorption bands. Meanwhile, all compounds are emissive in solution at room temperature (lambda(em) = 450-520 nm). When the electron-donating ability of the attached chromophores increases, the fluorescent quantum yields of these compounds increase. The calculated ground-state geometries further demonstrate the ICT transition for these molecules from HOMO to LUMO. Their luminescent and electrochemical properties could be used for understanding the structure-property relationship of naphthyridine compounds and developing optical functional materials.
Synthesis and characterization of 2-(anthracene-9-yl)-4,5-diphenyl-1 H-imidazole derivatives as environmentally sensitive fluorophores

Abstract:2-(Anthracene-9-yl)-4,5-diphenyl-1H-imidazole (ADPI) provides an intriguing molecular platform for developing organic fluorophores with diverse properties and fluorescence performances. However, derivatives of ADPI have not yet been well explored and extensive studies are warranted. To shed more light on this, we have synthesized a series of π-extended ADPIs through a concise synthetic route involving an efficient cross-condensation reaction followed by Pd-catalyzed Suzuki cross-coupling. The obtained compounds were subjected to X-ray single crystallographic analysis to understand their molecular conformational and solid-state packing properties. Furthermore, UV-Vis absorption and fluorescence spectroscopic analyses were conducted. Our experimental results have disclosed interesting solvatofluorochromic properties of these compounds which are useful for solvent polarity-sensitive applications. The presence of an amphoteric imidazolyl group in the ADPI derivatives also renders them sensitive fluorescence responses to strong protic acids (e.g., trifluoroacetic acid) as well as fluoride anion. It transpires that the fluorescence changes are dependent on the functional groups attached to the ADPI core, suggesting a bottom-up molecular tuning approach for development of fluorophores and chemosensors with diverse functions.
Synthesis and Photophysical Properties of Charge-Transfer-Based Pyrimidine-Derived α-Amino Acids

Abstract:The four-step synthesis of fluorescent pyrimidine-derived α-amino acids from an l-aspartic acid derivative is described. The key synthetic steps involved preparation of ynone intermediates via the reaction of alkynyl lithium salts with a Weinreb amide, followed by an ytterbium-catalyzed heterocyclization reaction with amidines. Variation of substituents at the C2- and C4-position of the pyrimidine ring allowed tuning of the photoluminescent properties of the α-amino acids. This revealed that a combination of highly conjugated or electron-rich aryl substituents with the π-deficient pyrimidine motif resulted in fluorophores with the highest quantum yields and overall brightness. Further analysis of the most fluorogenic α-amino acid demonstrated solvatochromism and sensitivity to pH.

Abstract:Photoelectric functional materials with electrochemical reversible activity and fluorescence intensities have attracted significant interest due to their wide range of applications in optoelectronic devices. In this work, a series of photoresponsive and electroactive monomers based on thieno[3.4-c]pyrrole-4,6-dione (TPD) are synthesized and characterized. They possess planar geometry with smaller dihedral angles owing to the existence of a noncovalent conformation lock coming from the S atoms and the O atoms. Crystallographic, spectroscopic, and computational results reveal that the introduction of the TPD unit can endow the monomers with aggregation-induced emission (AIE), reduced energy levels, and increased electrochemical activity. The monomers were successfully polymerized through the electrochemical method, and the corresponding polymers displayed reversible electrochemical activity and stability. Moreover, polymer films based on 3,3-dimethyl-3,4-dihydro-2H-thieno[3,4-b][1,4]dioxepine (ProE)-TPD have electrochromic properties in the near-infrared field with a high value of optical contrast ratio (∆T) of 27.1% at 1000 nm.

Abstract:Pyrazolinone derivatives are a new class of organic photochromic materials with excellent optical color change properties in the powder crystal state, which show great potential for applications, including high-density storage, fluorescence switching, and bioimaging. Their design and synthesis with structural photoreversibility and excellent fluorescence modulation properties are areas of research focus. Rational modification of the molecular backbone with the introduction of the 5-bromopyridine group at the 4-position of the pyrazolinone ring was used to prepare three pyrazolinone condensed aminothiourea derivatives with photoreversible color change in the powder crystal state. The molecular structures of the compounds were confirmed by mass spectrometry and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. The changes in the infrared spectra indicated alcoholic to ketonic transformation in the molecular structures upon ultraviolet (UV) illumination. The ultraviolet-visible (UV–vis) absorption spectra showed significant photoreversible changes in all three derivatives, and the introduction of the electron-absorbing phenyl group resulted in the most significant fading of DP5Br3PyBP-PTSC. The fluorescence emission spectra showed that the three derivatives have prominent blue fluorescence. Their fluorescence emission intensity gradually decreased until the increase in UV illumination time produced quenching. The property of excellent fluorescence reversibility under the alternating UV and visible light was shown by all three derivatives, which are expected to be applied in fluorescent molecular switches.
