Abstract:Using the first-hand survey data, this paper examines the formation of African economic zone in Guangzhou, and analyzes its development process, reasons and mechanisms.Transnational entrepreneurialism,a new concept,is used to delineate a new force that appears under the context of booming "made in China," according to which entrepreneurs abroad came to China for business, forming economic zones and new social spaces. With a case study on Guangzhou,it is found that African migrants are mainly foreign traders.During the last decade, they developed an entrepreneurial chain that covers African,Europe,North America,Middle Asia,South-East Asia, and China, through which they migrated to Guangzhou and made a new ethnic zone at Xiaobeilu,Sanyuanli, etc. The ethnic economy in these two areas are growing to be full-fledged,including both logistic companies and trading individuals;the latter depends on the social network established by the former group to practice their transnational business.African economic zones include three circles of social ties:the core is a circle of African traders;the second circle is their communities;and the third circle,so-called China-Africa circle, develops the interactions between Africans and local Chinese. The upsurge of new social space under "transnational entrepreneurialism" not only marks the coming of a new era of intensive-globalization in urban China, but also means both opportunities and challenges for the local government.
