Abstract:Starting from the several public buildings disputed andthe recently opened Conference of National Engineering Academy withthe topic on public buildings the paper has discussed the relation be-tween the lack of architecture theory and several abnormalities comesforth in the architecture area. A point of view of "back to the basic" isbrought up again. Based on the two books translated newly by Profes-sor Wang Guixiang on Architecture Theory, the author has reviewedthe history of architecture theory of both China and world, explainedthe principles of Primary Categories and Secondary Categories, andbring forward that there are some connections between the proper pointsof view on architecture theory and the national development. The pa-per advised that we should face to the situation on the architecture theoryand design, to understand and consider the basic principle of architec-ture theory more carefully and deeply, then to make the Chinese archi-tecture enterprise flourish.

Abstract:Based on two case studies, Liangcun in Shanxi Province and Yingtan in Hebei Province, this paper provides a systematic study on the morphologies of" ordered"and "organic"traditional Chinese villages. Four aspects including location, axes, modular and vision scopes are closely examined. The conclusion is that there are some common rules applied to those four aspects of village planning and design, which are in accordance with the principles of city and garden design in ancient China.

Abstract:This article sets foot on the phenomena of the desolation of German scholar Boerschmann’s books, based on part of the research information about Chinese architecture by foreign scholars in early 1900s,according to Bulletins of the Society for Research in Chinese Architecture.It also makes primary contrast between the basic interest and value orientation of Study on history of Chinese architecture,reflected from the academic activities and essays by Liang Sicheng in 1930s,and the basic academic attitude and methodology related to Chinese architecture observed from part of the works by Boerschmann.It aims at specifying the unique reasons for the desolation of Boerschmann’s thoughts from the angle of the academic development of Chinese architecture,and meanwhile trimming and observing the early academic thoughts of Liang Sicheng to some degree.

Abstract:Architecture can be compared with the language, and the contextual phenomenon also exists in architecture. In this paper, we use the linguistic context as a beginning of architectural research to set up an architectural context zone. The thesis discusses around some problems, such as why we build architectural context zone, what the architectural context zone is and how to generate architectural significances through the architectural context zone. This thesis aims to find the way to establish the suficient conditions of architectural design from the perspective of context, arousing people to create and interpret architecture under the guidance of contextual thinking.

Abstract:In order to find a way to combine traditional culture with modern living needs, taking “Chinese painting” as the breakthrough point, through the study of the development process and artistic characteristics of Chinese painting, four aspects of classical philosophy, natural landscape image, brush and ink composition artistic conception, and abstract aesthetic conception contained in Chinese painting are summed up. The results of the study provide enlightenment for contemporary residential landscape design, and summarize the methods of creating Chinese paintings in residential landscape design. Thus, a residential landscape model with the characteristics of “Chinese painting” is found out.

Abstract:The Yingzao fashi (Building standards) is a Chinese building manual published in 1103, written by architect Li Jie (d. 1110). Li’s approach was rule-based, reflecting a tradition in which knowledge was transmitted orally in the form of easily-remembered procedures. For instance, the method of determining the characteristic curved roof section, called juzhe, is a two-step process; Li’s first rule was to use modular units, the absolute values of which varied according to the rank of the building. This has led to the Yingzao fashi being called a “grammar book of Chinese architecture.” The use of a formal tool, shape grammar, makes it possible, for example, to understand juzhe as a recursive algorithm and, indeed, to propose a completely generative definition of the Song architectural style. The work can be extended to comparative formal studies of extant Chinese buildings and a second “grammar book,” the Gongcheng zuofa zeli (Structural regulations), published in 1733.

Abstract:The paper emphasizes utmost importance to two theoretical arguments. Firstly," Culture is the soul of a city", secondly," Architecture is the symbol of culture." The paper points out the existing weakness of most Chinese cities is its similarity to each other in appearance, the so called" Peculiarity Crisis"." one face for a thousand cities". etc. The paper also puts forward three suggestions on dealing with this weakness: (1) to get rid of the sense of inferiority in culture, (2) to insist on searching for culture, climatic and geographical peculiarities of domestic architecture in designing. Do not forget to create something new, while inheriting excellent traditions, (3) application of the artistic principle of "Defamiliarization", that is, making things creatively, letting people get rid of the familiarization in feeling and looking at things in a surprising sight and poetic way. As a result, things originally have no fresh ideas will become brand new.

Abstract:The article delves into the concept of “Chineseness” in contemporary Chinese architecture, a strategic tool for creating distinctive styles rooted in Chinese identity. It serves not only to distinguish projects from market-driven trends but also to establish a pivotal position in the global architectural landscape. "Chineseness" among 24 identified keywords represents a practical strategy embraced by many young architects with international exposure. The traditional Chinese dwelling, a symbol of familial and cultural essence, particularly in the context of home culture, is a primary inspiration for contemporary architects. The research adopts a case study approach, focusing on Tulou-related cases from the last fifteen years, encompassing various building types. The Tulou, a mountain-dwelling with rich cultural connotations, is introduced, reflecting ancient Chinese philosophies in its architectural principles. The case studies, including URBANUS’s “Tulou Collective Housing 2008" and Chengdu’s “Tulou Theater,” demonstrate how Tulou prototypes can be creatively adapted. These designs not only replicate forms but also capture the communal spirit inherent in traditional dwellings. “Stepped Courtyards” by OPEN Architecture reinterprets Tulou typology for a staff dormitory, emphasizing community awareness. In conclusion, the concept of “Chineseness” emerges as a prominent topic, showcasing the dynamic and adaptable nature of traditional Chinese culture and modern architectural expressions. The cases illustrate the evolving intersection between traditional Chinese culture and modern architecture, offering insights into the future trajectory of Chinese architectural culture. The interrelated keywords highlight the nuanced and evolving nature of “Chineseness” in architectural practices.

Abstract:This article first discusses the classifications of ancient Chinese architectures made by researchers with different cultural backgrounds.Then it reviews the classification criteria in Ji Cheng's"Yuan Ye"and examples of how ancient architectures was named by literati of various dynasties by differentiating and analyzing the relationships of"making the use of borrowed scenery"and"complementation"between buildings and landscapes in Chinese gardens.On this basis,the article explores the different tendencies between the East and the West when addressing issues in respect of classification.The west puts more emphasis on the static"entities",while the east focuses more on the dynamic"relationships".Finally,the article describes how the"cultural ethnocentrism"in the West was formed and what influence it had brought to China.

Abstract:The new translated two books which is originally written by Britain scholar David Smith Capon is the result of the answers onthe questions as did the doctrines reflect different aspects of the build-ings such as its form and function, so giving rise to Formalism andFunctionalism, or did they reflect different aspects of the contemplat-ing subject such as his or her reason or emotion, so giving rise to Ra-tionalism and Expressionism’ The two books are the fulfillment of theintentions of the work and consists of an analysis of the architecturaltheory of the twentieth century as recorded in representative samplesof Western literature. To learn from the points and to think about thesituation or the contemporary Chinese architecture theory and prac-tice will be a reasonable help.
