Abstract:Composites of silicon carbide whiskers and aluminum (SiCw/Al) can be widely applied in many industrial fields because they have high specific strength, high specific modulus, low thermal coefficient of expansion and so on. Using low temperature treatment, the thermal residual stress in the matrix of the composite can be modified [1, 2], and the strength of the composite can be improved [3]. It is necessary to further understand the influence of low temperature treatment on the elastic modulus of the composite. The ultrasonic velocity of the composite is mainly related to the elastic modulus, so the elastic modulus can be precisely determined by measuring the ultrasonic velocity [4, 5]. The ultrasonic characteristic of a 20 vol%SiCw/6061Al composite before and after low temperature treatment was studied to understand the influence of low temperature on the elastic modulus. The experimental material is a squeeze cast 20 vol% SiCw/Al composite. The length and diameter of the whiskers is 5‐15„m and 0.2‐1„m, respectively. The samples of the composite are as-cast and low temperature treated, respectively. During the process of low temperature treatment, the sample was slowly cooled to the temperature of¡78 ‐ Co r¡196 ‐ C and held at low temperature for 1 h, then returned to room temperature (25 ‐ C). By using the ultrasonic velocity analyzer and the method of echo of pulse, the velocity and attenuation factor of ultrasonic wave was measured, respectively. The ultrasonic test parameters were: diameter of transducer 10 mm, ultrasonic frequency 10 MHz, coupling solution glycerine. The behavior of dislocations in the matrix of the composite was observed by transmission electron microscope (TEM). The relationship between ultrasonic velocity and treatment temperature of 20 vol%SiCw/6061Al composite is shown in Figs 1 and 2, respectively. It was found that after low temperature treatment, the velocities of longitudinal and shear waves increased. The relation between the attenuation factor of the longitudinal and shear waves of the composite is shown in Fig. 3. It can be seen that after low temperature treatment, the attenuation factor of the ultrasonic wave of the composite also increased. The relation between ultrasonic velocity (u L )o f the longitudinal wave and the elastic modulus ( E )o f the
