Abstract:A low-power,medium-speed and medium-resolution successive approximation A/D converter with single analog input was presented, which was used as an interface of a microprocessor.A segmented capacitive array was used in the digital-to-analog converter,so as to improve layout matching and save chip area.A multi-stage structure consisting of three pre-amplifiers and a latch was adopted and an offset cancellation technique was used for the comparator. The digital portion coordinates the analog circuits to finish successive approximation process, which can also power down the whole chip.Designed and fabricated in UMC's 0.18 μm mixed mode CMOS technology, this successive approximation A/D converter occupies a chip area of 1 400 μm×1 030 μm Simulation results show that it achieves 12 bits of resolution at 1 MS/s sampling rate under 2.5 V supply voltage with only 1 mW of power consumption by the analog portion.
