Abstract:The heat transfer and pressure drop characteristics in the developing region for arrays of plates of nonuniform length positioned obliquely to the direction of airflow in a rectangular duct have been investigated experimentally via the naphthalene sublimation technique. The ranges of parameters studied arc Reynolds number, 200-2000; length ratio of two successive plates, L1/L2, 1.5-2.5; and ratio of transverse pitch to longitudinal pitch, T(p)/L(p), 0.571-0.800. It is found that at low Reynolds numbers, flow may be regarded as fully developed even from the second cycle. A decrease in transverse pitch may significantly accelerate the development of the flow field, but the ratio of two successive plate lengths has no appreciable effect on the length of the developing region. For the local simulation case (ie, only the plates in the tested cycle are coated with naphthalene), the number of cycles necessary for mass transfer to be fully developed is greater than that obtained from the partial simulation method (ie, all plates in the same row are coated with naphthalene). The effects of the afterduct on the heat and mass transfer and pressure drop characteristics of plates positioned near the exit of the test section are also experimentally studied.
