Abstract:The bionic consciousness, idea, and practice opened a unique path for the progress of mankind, the development of the society, and the innovation of science and technology from the subconscious bionic activities of the ancient humans to the significant bionic designs in modern engineering. Nowadays, driven by the practical demand of human beings, bionics becomes an important factor for the sustainable development of technology. A lot of new and outstanding innovations have been produced through the effective interactions between bionics, technology, and demand. The stronger the interactions, the greater the innovation success would be. In this article, the basic factors such as the connotation, characteristics, and interactions of bionic demands, bionic models, bionic simulations, and bionic products were explained, which are the indispensable basic knowledge for improving the ability of innovation especially for the original one, realizing the design and innovation of new technology and manufacturing for better bionic products.

Abstract:After billions of years of evolution, the form, structure, function, behavior and other aspects of living things in the nature have been optimized, designers imitate this advantages to make the bionics melt into structure, then biomimetic structure came to being. On the basis of some examples, this paper establishes two different classification methods of biomimetic structure--according to different imitating objects and different imitating aims, and presents the conception of form-finding bionics, takes tree structure as an example to analyze.

Abstract:The theoretical studies of bionics of machinery have great scientific significance, and the development of bionic machines has large practical values in the field of engineering and technology. Through the rigorous selection process of evolution, the survived living organisms have successfully developed outstanding abilities to adapt to their surroundings and to reproduce their offspring. In this review, we interpreted the fundamental principles of anti-adhesion and anti-resistance of soil animals by reviewing the current status in this research field and summarizing the work of the research group at Jilin University of China in the past decades. The principles and technologies used in morphology bionics, electric-osmosis bionics, flexibility bionics, configuration bionics and coupling bionics were examined. Finally, the applications of the engineering bionics and their extensive prospects were introduced.

Abstract:It described the concept of bionics design,methods and models,analyzed the process of form bionics,namely,biological prototype-biological model-mathematical model-test model-product model.Pointed out that form bionics is not a simple mechanical imitation,but the re-creation in repeated practice,finally comprises form that is quite similar to the shape rather than the full with biological prototype.On this basis,to high-speed train (front),car,motorcycle,IT products,and commodities as some examples show that their applications in bionics design.Product form through bionics design,with its natural biological form,directly impacts on people's vision,to give a more intuitive,close,beautiful,lovely feeling.Great importance to environmental protection,particularly in today,bionics design of product shape is especially important.

Abstract:Bionics evolved in the 1960s as a framework to pursue the development of artificial systems based on the study of biological systems. Numerous disciplines and technologies, including artificial intelligence and learningdevices, information processing, systems architecture and control, perception, sensory mechanisms, and bioenergetics, contributed to bionics research. This volume is based on a NATO Advanced Research Workshop within the Special Programme on Sensory Systems for Robotic Control, held in Il Ciocco, Italy, in June 1989. A consensus emerged at the workshop, and is reflected in the book, on the value of learning from nature in order to derive guidelines for the design of intelligent machines which operate in unstructured environments. The papers in the book are grouped into seven chapters: vision and dynamic systems, hands and tactile perception, locomotion, intelligent motor control, design technologies, interfacing robots to nervous systems, and robot societies and self-organization.

Abstract:This paper attempts to achieve the solution to some problems presently existing in bridge design and to provide the new thinking and ways for the innovative design of future on the basis of the classification and application goals of bionics and through the introduction of bionics ideas into the design.With the study of the application of the bionics in aspects of macroscopic and microscopic biomimetics,the paper can likely establish the concept of living bridges and the ecological view for the bridge design.The application of the bionics ideas from a process of unconsciousness to consciousness will finally push the bridge design to a new stage and will help people to build more that are safe,sustainable,energy-efficient and harmonious with nature.

Abstract:Bionic robots provide new avenues and possibilities for solving various engineering and scientific problems by mimicking the structure and functionality of biological organisms. Today's bionic robots can not only mimic the movement patterns of animals but also achieve more complex functions, such as entering the human body to diagnose symptoms.This paper introduces the importance of bionic robots in the field of medicine and their related applications. Firstly, the paper defines bionic robots and emphasizes their interdisciplinary nature, highlighting their role in driving innovation and development in medicine. It then analyzes the applications of two main types of bionic robots in medicine: multi-joint rigid-body bionic robots and soft-bodied bionic robots. Using examples such as the Da Vinci surgical robot and soft-bodied bionic robots, it details their principles, design characteristics, and application cases in medicine. The paper also discusses the advantages and limitations of these robots, such as the high precision and minimally invasive advantages of the Da Vinci surgical robot, but also the issues of high learning costs and expensive equipment. Finally, it introduces the frontier of rehabilitation robots, emphasizing their important role in helping patients recover. In conclusion, this review comprehensively elaborates on the basic theories and specific application cases of biomimetic robots in the medical field, providing important references for further research and application in this field.

Structural and Multidisciplinary Optimization

Abstract:Structure bionic optimization design is one kind of important lightweight design method. There are many high-specific-stiffness load-bearing topology structures in nature, whose mechanical properties and load-bearing mechanisms are quite different. These efficient load-bearing structures in nature provide important inspirations for structural bionic design. However, space topology structure of biology corresponds to its specific environment, which is more suitable for the specific load-bearing case. How to realize the complementary integration of biological advantages is an important problem in bionics research, which has not been solved effectively. Based on mapping inversion relationship (RMI) method and the matter-element (ME) theory, the structure bionic design method oriented to the integration of biological advantages is proposed. The proposed method applies the extensibility matter-element in an interdisciplinary way to solve this problem innovatively and effectively. Instead of random or wild mental stimulation, the proposed method formalizes the problem-solution for the integration of biological advantages. An example is used to show the concrete implementation process based on this method, and the results show the effectiveness of this proposed method. The proposed method could be extended to other bionic studies about biological advantages integration in further research.

Abstract:Natural articular cartilage is well known as a special connective tissue with multiple effects and functions, which are important and irreplaceable, in human synovial joints. Biomedical, histological and pathological characteristics of articular cartilage, as well as biomaterial, biomechanical and bio-tribological properties thereof, are summarized from a novel aspect of bionics. Bionic design of articualr cartilage at macro-level and micro-level is carried out from three aspects, i.e., structure, material, and function; and a bionic design model of articular cartilage is set up. As a result, this basic research would be helpful to providing theoretical and practical basis for innovational design and manufacturing of new-style artificial joint with "soft-cushion bearing", and of bionic artificial cartilage.

Abstract:The combination of biological and artificial intelligence is a promising methodology to construct a novel intelligent modality, proposed as cyborg intelligence. The hierarchical conceptual framework is based on the interaction and combination of comparable components of biological cognitive units and computing intelligent units. The authors extend the previous conceptual framework and focus on sensorimotor circuits to explore the representation and integration of sensation. They then present a cognitive computing model for brain-computer integration and design efficient machine-learning algorithms for neural signal decoding. They also propose biological reconstruction methods for sensorimotor circuits to not only restore but enhance functionalities with AI. They develop a series of demonstrating systems to validate the conceptual framework of cyborg intelligence and possibly herald bright prospects and high values in diversified aspects of theoretical research, engineering techniques, and clinical applications. Finally, the authors summarize the latest research trends and challenges, which they believe will further boost new scientific frontiers in cyborg intelligence.
