Abstract:There are many beautiful shapes in nature as flowers, shells, crystal, molecule, spider web, mountains, etc. All of these shapes can be used for reference in the shape design of space structures. Abstract:: With the development of the times, people's life concepts, lifestyles and thoughts are also constantly changing, and the demand for cultural products is paying more and more attention to creativity and innovation. Since ancient times, nature has been the source of human enlightenment. As a design method, bionic design not only has a unique sense of beauty, but also makes product design more vital and appealing. The research focus of this topic is to take the inspiration brought by biology as the starting point, with the help of the form elements, color elements, structural elements, functional elements and symbolic meanings in the bionic design, to find new ideas in the design and development of cultural and creative products. Inspiration, the application and exploration of the utilization, processing and re-creation of the external morphological characteristics and internal functional structure of living beings, and giving products a new way of spreading while presenting cultural connotations. The aim is to summarize the innovative thinking methods that transform natural biological characteristics into product design applications, and provide reference and new ideas for promoting the development and design of cultural creative products.

A new method to generate color texture images based on HSV and olfactory system bionic model

Abstract:A new method to generate color texture images is proposed in this paper, which derived from our previous works to generate the gray texture. The method is based on the olfactory system bionic model to generate the gray texture. The model architecture mimics that of mammal olfactory neural system. Period function is used as the activity function of nodes in the model to realize the periodic repetition of texture. Chaotic mapping is used to adjust the model parameters to assure the model being in non-convergence state. The previous input is introduced as the noise to simulate the background noise of neural system. One color image is used as seed image. In HSV space, the Hue (H), saturation (S) and value (V) of each pixel is used as the model input and the model output is composed as the H, S and V of corresponding pixel in generated texture. Experimental results show that the proposed method can generate many beautiful color textures, whose textures are different from the original texture.

Abstract:It described the concept of bionics design,methods and models,analyzed the process of form bionics,namely,biological prototype-biological model-mathematical model-test model-product model.Pointed out that form bionics is not a simple mechanical imitation,but the re-creation in repeated practice,finally comprises form that is quite similar to the shape rather than the full with biological prototype.On this basis,to high-speed train (front),car,motorcycle,IT products,and commodities as some examples show that their applications in bionics design.Product form through bionics design,with its natural biological form,directly impacts on people's vision,to give a more intuitive,close,beautiful,lovely feeling.Great importance to environmental protection,particularly in today,bionics design of product shape is especially important.

Abstract:The research objective of this paper is to examine the role of bionic design in advancing sustainable development within industrial design by outlining its theoretical framework; analyzing its applications in morphological, functional, and material aspects; identifying current challenges; and projecting future trends toward eco-integration, resource efficiency, and technological innovation. First, the definition, development history, and theoretical basis of the sustainable development of bionic design are outlined. Secondly, the application of bionic design in sustainable industrial design is analyzed in depth, including the application of morphological bionic design in exploring the combination of nature and innovation, the role of functional bionic design in integrating biological function and product innovation, and the harmonious unification of material bionic and environmental friendliness. Finally, it points out the current challenges faced by bionic design, such as barriers in design practice and market acceptance issues, and looks forward to the sustainable development trend of bionic design, including eco-integration, resource efficiency enhancement, technological innovation, integrated application, etc., to provide new ideas and impetus for the sustainable development of the industrial design field in the future.

Abstract:Aiming at the ambiguity problem in the process of morphological extraction and characterization in morphological bionic design, the innovative expression of products is studied from the perspective of extension semiotics. Based on the extensible primitive theory, a morphological bionic design symbol extensible primitive model is constructed, and the feature element symbol extraction and extendable transformation are carried out to obtain an innovative plan for morphological bionic design, and using the fuzzy comprehensive evaluation method selects the optimal plan. Taking the bionic lamp of Lintong pomegranate as an example, the above method is deeply analyzed and verified. The results show that the morphological biomimetic method based on extendable semiotics and fuzzy comprehensive evaluation method has good feasibility, which provides a method reference for product creative design.

Abstract:Various innate beauty and wonderful operation exist in nature. Biological features and strategies of organisms applied to product development has become a popular approach on contemporary product design. This study used a verification method – to apply the practical teaching – to obtain a set of methods on bionic design and product development. Through LAMDA methods of lean t hinking, we focused on users’ actual requests of target products and their value, and a Mandala Chart for biological strategies and forms of bionic targets, resulting in a bionic Mandala Chart incorporated into product development to have products with bionic functions. Finally, via a fuzzy comprehensive evaluation (FCE) to evaluate stu dents’ design, we found that the proposed approach can help them quickly grasp the relationship between thinking models and directions, and simplify operation on design proce ss. With maximum degree of membership on design, experts’ evaluation suggested “good” or above can improve the efficiency of product development, and indeed help students realize practical use of bionic design. Results were as references for product design courses.

Abstract:Since the dawn of time, foliage plants have been the primary plant material used in the design of Chinese landscape gardens, and their rich cultural and historical heritage can serve as inspiration for design improvement and innovation. This study categorizes the decorative traits of foliage plants into three categories, aiming to explore their cultural characteristics and design applications. Special attention is given to the folkloric, cultural, religious, and totemic meanings of foliage plants. The various forms of bionic design based on the application of foliage plants are categorized and illustrated with specific cases. This exploration includes perspectives of morphology, texture, function, and imagery, all rooted in the theory of bionic design. The beauty of natural art, the humanistic attitude, and the advancement of function, material, and technology in product design can all be reflected in foliage plants as design elements.

Abstract:Bio-inspired design (BID) involves generating innovative ideas for engineering design by drawing inspiration from natural biological phenomena and systems, using a form of design-by-analogy. Despite its many successes, BID approaches encounter research challenges including unstructured data and existing models that hinder comprehension and processing, limited focus on finding biological knowledge compared to defined problems, and insufficient guidance of the ideation process with algorithms. This paper proposes a knowledge-based approach to address the challenges. The approach involves transforming unstructured data into structured knowledge, including information about natural sources, their benefits, and applications. The structured knowledge is then used to construct a semantic network, enabling designers to retrieve information for BID in two ways. Furthermore, a three-step ideation method is developed to encourage divergent thinking and explore additional potential solutions by drawing inspiration and utilizing knowledge. The knowledge-based BID approach is implemented as a tool and design cases are conducted to illustrate the process of applying this tool for BID.

Structural and Multidisciplinary Optimization

Abstract:Structure bionic optimization design is one kind of important lightweight design method. There are many high-specific-stiffness load-bearing topology structures in nature, whose mechanical properties and load-bearing mechanisms are quite different. These efficient load-bearing structures in nature provide important inspirations for structural bionic design. However, space topology structure of biology corresponds to its specific environment, which is more suitable for the specific load-bearing case. How to realize the complementary integration of biological advantages is an important problem in bionics research, which has not been solved effectively. Based on mapping inversion relationship (RMI) method and the matter-element (ME) theory, the structure bionic design method oriented to the integration of biological advantages is proposed. The proposed method applies the extensibility matter-element in an interdisciplinary way to solve this problem innovatively and effectively. Instead of random or wild mental stimulation, the proposed method formalizes the problem-solution for the integration of biological advantages. An example is used to show the concrete implementation process based on this method, and the results show the effectiveness of this proposed method. The proposed method could be extended to other bionic studies about biological advantages integration in further research.

Abstract:Biologically inspired design (BID) is one of the common methods for product design. To solve the problem of inaccurate acquisition of inspirational creatures due to the lack of user perception preference analysis, a data-driven intelligent service model for BID considering user perception needs is proposed based on Kansei engineering. Firstly, by extracting the perceptual features of creatures from the semantic source elements of products through mapping and encodes them, we proposed a data acquisition method based on intuitionistic fuzzy sets considering different customer preference distributions, bridging the gap caused by the asymmetry between designers and users. Secondly, the functional relationship between biometric features and user-perceived attributes is identified and predicted, and a predictive model of biodata considering user preferences is obtained by multiple linear regression analysis. Finally, based on the data clustering and reorganization theory to understand the organization and dynamics of the database, the construction of a BID library was completed, and the design resources in the library were used as analyzed knowledge for designers to plan design activities. Taking the bionic design of a UAV product as an example, a prototype of a computer-aided design service system was developed based on the theory proposed in the article, and the analyzed knowledge was used to improve the efficiency and science of the design, effectively verifying the usefulness of this study for design. To a certain extent, this study addresses the problem of cognitive limitations of designers and cognitive differences between designers and users, promotes the application of bioinspiration in product design, and improves the marketability of design solutions.

A User Biology Preference Prediction Model Based on the Perceptual Evaluations of Designers for Biologically Inspired Design.

Abstract:Biology provides a rich and novel source of inspiration for product design. An increasing number of industrial designers are gaining inspiration from nature, producing creative products by extracting, classifying, and reconstructing biological features. However, the current process of gaining biological inspiration is still limited by the prior knowledge and experience of designers, so it is necessary to investigate the designer's perception of biological features. Herein, we investigate designer perceptions of bionic object features based on Kansei engineering, achieving a highly comprehensive structured expression of biological features forming five dimensions-Overall Feeling, Ability and Trait, Color and Texture, Apparent Tactile Sensation, and Structural Features-using factor analysis. Further, producing creative design solutions with a biologically inspired design (BID) has a risk of failing to meet user preferences and market needs. A user preference prediction support tool may address this bottleneck. We examine user preference by questionnaire and explore its association with the perceptual evaluation of designers, obtaining a user preference prediction model by conducting multiple linear regression analysis. This provides a statistical model for identifying the relative weighting of the perception dimensions of each designer in the user preference for an animal, giving the degree of contribution to the user preference. The experiment results show that the dimension "Overall Feeling" of the designer perception is positively correlated with the "like" level of the user preference and negatively correlated with the "dislike" level of the user preference, indicating that this prediction model bridges the gap caused by the asymmetry between designers and users by matching the designer perception and user preference. To a certain extent, this research solves the problems associated with the cognitive limitations of designers and the differences between designers and users, facilitating the use of biological features in product design and thereby enhancing the market importance of BID schemes.

Abstract:Natural figures are originally efficient and considering the aesthetics are also satisfying and eligible. Although in the world of engineering an efficient schema doesn’t mean a successful design in aesthetics. There are lots of structures which are efficient but don’t have any aesthetic value. Connecting a schema with natural figures and rules can avoid this imperfection and can help the engineers to unite the streak quality with the real and practical structure demands. This article briefly explains the bionic science and introduces the bionic construction systems, in continuation discusses the context of beauty, efficiency and movement in the structural engineering and illumes the topic by indicating some examples. Designers exerted two styles for using and imitating the natural forms. In the first style the goal of designer is only imitating the external appearance of natural forms so the building will just reflect the appeared beauty of the surrounding environment. In the second style designer is inspired to create new designing by the proses which formed the natural figures. Finally this article emphasizes the necessity of paying the structural engineers’ attention to the natural morphology to inspire them from optimum patterns so that it helps the inventive engineers become structural artists.

Research on the Modeling of Series Lighting Products based on Natural Elements in Bionic Design

Abstract:In modern lighting design, more and more designers use bionic design for product innovation. The article divides the bionic design into three dimensions: whole, part, and detail. On this basis, it proposes simplified bionic and structural redesign. Bionic and texture reorganization are three methods, and the feasibility of the three methods is confirmed through case studies. The simplified bionic method is applied to the actual series of lamps and lanterns design. Rhino and KeyShot are used for 3D modeling and rendering. The final design A series of lamps have been produced to confirm that the design method in the article is effective, and I hope it will be helpful to future lamp designers.

Abstract:Structural color attracts considerable scientific interests and industrial explorations in various fields for the eco-friendly, fade-resistant, and dynamic advantages. After the long-period evolution, nature has achieved the optimized color structures at various length scales, which has inspired people to learn and replicate them to improve the artificial structure color. In this review, we focus on the design of artificial structural colors based on colloidal particle assembly and summarize the functional bioinspired structure colors. We demonstrate the design principles of biomimetic structural colors via the precise structure engineering and typical bottom-up methods. Some main applications are outlined in the following chapter. Finally, we propose the existing challenges and promising prospects. This review is expected to introduce the recent design strategies about the artificial structure colors and provide the insights for its future development.

Abstract:Bio-inspired design (BID) is an abstract process, if we can visualize the process of fusing abstract biological inspiration with figurative product shapes, and combine it with artificial intelligence technology to express the designer's creativity, it will greatly improve the efficiency and accuracy of product shape bionic design. To address this problem, we combine BID with deep generative (DG) model to build a co-creative deep generative bio-inspired design (DGBID) model. Firstly, the designers used perceptual engineering and eye-movement experiments to select the bionic creature that best fits the bionic product and the suitable bionic product and bionic image, respectively. Then, the images are embedded into the potential space of StyleGAN, and the potential relationship between the two is visualized using StyleGAN's image morphing technique, which generates a new bionic fusion scheme. Finally, the contour lines of the solution are extracted as a reference, the designer is involved in the optimization of the scheme as a sketch, and the hand-drawn sketch is transformed into a real product solution using style migration techniques. The entire bionic design experiment process is a co-creative approach with artificial intelligence technology as the lead and designer participation. The feasibility of the method is verified using the side view of a car as a bionic product. The results show that the integration of bionic technology with deep generative model technology can accelerate the innovation and development of bionic products and provide designers with design references and rapid-generation tools.

Abstract:It is difficult for the blind to perceive colors, so they identify with colors much less in their daily lives. Our research is exploring new interactions to help them recognize colors. ColorOdor is an interactive device that can help the blind identify colors through corresponding odors. This article is mainly used to define the connection between color and odor for the blind and thus broaden their cognition of colors through user research. We hope that our research can broaden novel interactions between individuals with disabilities and their environments.
