Abstract:Wheat straw and bamboo are the main non-wood species used in papermaking in China, but most of the mills still use chlorine and hypochlorite as bleaching agents, resulting in serious pollution and a limitation of the product quality. To achieve a more efficient utilization of the non-wood fiber resources, improve the quality of bleached pulps and satisfy the requirements for environment protection, wheat straw and bamboo pulps were subjected to ECF and TCF bleaching and the results were compared to those of CEH bleaching. The results indicate that the CODcr, BOD(5) and SS loads in OQP, DQP and D(EOP)D effluents were much lower than those in CEH effluents, and the AOX levels in DQP and D(EOP)P effluents were only 9%similar to 18% of those in CEH effluents, indicating that both ECF and TCF are environmentally friendly bleaching technologies. Both wheat straw and bamboo pulps could easily be bleached to 80%similar to 85% ISO brightness by DQP and D(EOP)D sequences at relatively low dosages of active chlorine and hydrogen peroxide, and the bleached pulps had Much higher viscosity and strength properties, a much lower PC number and higher pulp yield than the CEH-bleached pulps, which indicates that both DQP and D(EOP)D sequences are quite suitable for wheat straw and bamboo pulp bleaching.Low Kappa wheat straw and bamboo pulps could be bleached to an ISO brightness level higher than 80% by an OQP sequence. For the high Kappa pulps, in order to reach an ISO brightness of 80%, TCF bleaching sequences including two-stage oxygen delignification or pressurized hydrogen peroxide bleaching, such as (OO)QP or OQ(PO)(PO), are recommended. The extensive use of oxygen on the high Kappa number pulps may however lead to a loss in bleached pulp yield and viscosity.
