Abstract:The direct-lit LED backlight is a key component in large-area LCD displays. The existing methods which rely on point source assumption and irradiance feedback are less effective in compact designs in near field, and designing thin and high-quality back-lit LED backlights still remains a challenging issue. In this paper, we develop a direct method for designing thin and high-quality back-lit LED backlight systems. The étendue of LED light sources is considered in the numerical calculation of the lens profiles without cumbersome Monte Carlo ray tracing, which allows us to obtain compact LED lighting modules and achieve accurate control of the near-field irradiance distribution of the backlight system. Two examples are presented to demonstrate the elegance of this method in designing thin and high-quality back-lit LED backlights.

Abstract:A new 117 cm light direct-type backlight for LCD module has been designed,with optical length within 22 mm and centre lightness above 26 000 cd/m2 using middle-power,high color render LED with diffuse lens.The LCM can get to 1 500 cd/m2 above with open cell.A direct type LCM design with features of high lightness,nice display quality,good heat dissipation and low-power consumption is realized by optical effect,circuit drive and thermal design,giving strong support to the product with high light and nice display quality,such as LCD TV,LCD-Exhibit etc.
Novel Electrodeless Flat Back-light for LCD

Abstract:In order to decrease the preparation cost, enhancing the production efficiency and obtaining the excellent display of large-size LCD monitors, a novel flat back-light excited by plasma was developed. This back-light has no electrodes, which was composed of two flat glasses in which the pure Xe (at pressure of 267×104 Pa) was sealed, and a layer of water was added on the outside surfaces of the two glasses as the electrical conductive media and the glass with thickness of 1.1 mm as the dielectric barrier discharge layer. The white light was available by exciting the phosphor layer with the plasmas introduced by high-frequency voltage, whose luminance was 3 000 cd/m2 accompanied with the lighting homogeneity over than 92 %. The experimental results showed that the most suitable driving frequency was 10.2 kHz, and the driving voltage was 6 kV. At the same time, the effects of driving voltage, excited frequency and the thickness of samples on the lighting characteristics of the back-light were comprehensively evaluated.

Abstract:This work discusses a super thin Mini‐LED direct back light for upscale liquid crystal displays. In this manuscript, it is that Mini‐LED light is reflected between a gradient reflected pattern combined with Mini‐LED driving lines and back reflector of back light unit. The optical length is therefore enlarged in limited distance, which means that the diffusor plate and optical distance can be removed. Meanwhile, light from a red, a green and a blue Mini‐LED is mixing to generate white for display, replacing a 0.3–0.5mm thick color changing film, such as quantum dot enhancement film. The total thickness of this designed Mini‐LED back light is about 1.595mm when Mini‐LED pitch is 4.75mm. The measured uniformity and optical efficiency are verified as designs above 90% and 45%. Additionally, this direct back light can realize high‐dynamic range to improving display quality with lower power consumption. This work not only improves display quanlity in limited thickness, but also extends lifetime of liquid crystal display in coming future.

Abstract:At present, the large backlight modules, used in illuminating advertising pictures, are designed and developed in various specifications, whose common goal is to try to manufacture thinner backlight modules and produce more uniform illumination. The currently well developed backlighting technology for liquid crystal displays (LCDs) can be transformed and used in such an area. However, the design of edge-lit backlight with size of over 1 square meter has great difficulties in eliminating the phenomenon of non-uniform illumination. In this paper, the application of Bezier curve in the simulating the dot pattern on the bottom of light guide is presented, which directly determines the final light extraction efficiency and illuminating uniformity. Taking the RMS deviation of illuminance values at several sample positions as the merit function, the shape of Bezier curves can be smoothly changed, so that the dot radius can be optimized in a fast and efficient way. Such an optimization procedure uses only two variables and has a fast convergence. As an example, a large light guide, 800mm×1000mm in size, was designed by applying the Bezier method, and the final uniformity of 70% was achieved. The most prominent feature in such a method is that the thickness of designed light guide can decrease to 5 mm. In sum, the large sized edge-lit backlight can be designed in a short optimization period by simulating the dot radius distribution in a shape of the Bezier curve.

Abstract:Direct dynamic backlights have significant advantages over static backlights for liquid crystal display (LCD). This study introduced a structure of direct dynamic backlights based on LEDs,in which the light emission of every LED was restricted to a smaller area on the diffuser film and every LED was only responsible to illuminate one part of LCD. Based on this structure,a 240 mm×180 mm backlight model was analyzed theoretically. The simulation results showed that the uniformity of luminance can reach as high as 93.1%,and ΔU′V′ can decrease to 0.003 545,which completely satisfies the requests of backlight's applications.

Abstract:Liquid crystal displays (LCDs) with edge-lit backlight systems offer several advantages, such as low energy consuming, low weight, and high uniformity of intensity, over traditional cathode-ray tube displays, and make them ideal for many applications including monitors in notebook personal computers, screens for TV, and many portable information terminals, such as mobile phones, personal digital assistants, etc. To satisfy market requirements for mobile and personal display panels, it is more and more necessary to modify the backlight system and make it thinner, lighter, and brighter all at once. In this paper, we have proposed a new integrated LGP based on periodic and aperiodic microprism structures by using polymethyl methacrylate material, which can be designed to control the illumination angle, and to get high uniformity of intensity. So the backlight system will be simplified to use only light sources and one LGP without using other optical sheets, such as reflection sheet, diffusion sheet and prism sheets. By using optimizing program and ray tracing method, the designed LGPs can achieve a uniformity of intensity better than 86%, and get a peak illumination angle from +40 degrees to -20 degrees, without requiring other optical sheets. We have designed a backlight system with only one LED light source and one LGP, and other LGP design examples with different sizes (1.8 inches and 14.1 inches) and different light source (LED or CCFL), are performed also.

Abstract:This report discusses a glass based ultra‐thin Red, Green and Blue Mini‐LED direct back light for high‐end professional liquid crystal displays. In this work, a gradient reflected pattern combined Mini‐LED driving lines reflect light scattering between the patterns and back reflector of back light unit, and therefore enlarge Mini‐LED optical length. A group of a red, green and red Mini‐LED is using to generate white for display, replacing a 0.3–0.5mm thick color changing film. The total thickness of Mini‐LED direct back light is reduced to 1.595mm when the Mini‐LED pitch is about 4.75mm. This direct back light can realize high‐dynamic range to improving display quality without cost consumption and then extend lifetime liquid crystal display lifetime in coming decent years.

Abstract:LCD with Mini‐LED backlight performs high brightness and high contrast ratio. In this paper novel Mini‐LED based on LTPS TFT backplane is proposed for LCD backlight with over 5000 dimming zones and excellent image quality. Moreover, based on special driving circuit, 12‐14 driving bits, that is 4096‐16384 gray level, is achieved, which can improve local contrast ratio of the image. Compared to PM Mini‐LED, AM Mini‐LED shows superior performance on high dimming zone design, fewer LED drivers and improvement of image quality.

Abstract:Currently,more and more liquid crystal displays are towards to the low-power,which the effective method is reducing the number of LEDs as the light source.However,as the decrease of LED pixel,hot spot will increase fast.To solve above problem,without changing the distance between LED and guide plate,and with increasing the distance between LED and LED as well as incident angles of guide light plate,light in guide light plat is completely mixed by using this method,and light uniformity is much more improved.Hot spot in the LED backlight module are also solved.This research has good significance for LCD display.

Abstract:A conventional LCD backlight system is composed of light sources, a light-guide plate (LGP) and optical sheets, such as reflection sheets, diffusion sheets and prism sheets, etc. In order to make the backlight system thinner and brighter, we propose a novel integrated LGP based on micro-prism structures by using traditional transparent polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) material, which can be designed to control the illumination angle, and to get high uniformity of intensity. So the backlight system will be simplified to use only one LGP and to require no other optical sheets. By using the Monte Carlo ray tracing method, the light scattering phenomenon inside the LGP is analysed. The illumination angle with forward directivity and sufficient intensity uniformity are optimized with the simulation program. Design results reveal that our LGPs can achieve a uniformity of intensity better than 86%, and get a peak illumination angle from +40 degrees to -20 degrees, without using any optical sheets. Design examples, including 1.8 inch LGPs and 14.1 inch LGPs, are also performed.

Abstract:In this paper, BLDA technology has been applied to realize the preparation of a LTPS TFT without ion implantation. The BLDA LTPS TFT gives the advantages of high mobility (~ 290.5 cm 2 /Vs), a smaller subthreshold voltage swing, kink‐free output curve, and excellent device stability under PBTS. The backplane technology has been successfully applied in 7.1‐inch Mini‐LED display products, and the lighting effect is uniform. This low‐cost technique is very suitable for the LTPS TFT backplane for large area, high resolution Mini/Micro LED displays.

Abstract:In this study, we analyze how a backlight’s peak wavelength, full-width at half-maximum (FWHM), and color filters affect the color gamut of a liquid crystal display (LCD) device and establish a theoretical limit, even if the FWHM approaches 1 nm. To overcome this limit, we propose a new backlight system incorporating a functional reflective polarizer and a patterned half-wave plate to decouple the polarization states of the blue light and the green/red lights. As a result, the crosstalk between three primary colors is greatly suppressed, and the color gamut is significantly widened. In the experiment, we prepare a white-light source using a blue light-emitting diode (LED) to pump green perovskite polymer film and red quantum dots and demonstrate an exceedingly large color gamut (95.8% Rec. 2020 in Commission internationale de l'éclairage (CIE) 1931 color space and 97.3% Rec. 2020 in CIE 1976 color space) with commercial high-efficiency color filters. These results are beyond the color gamut limit achievable by a conventional LCD. Our design works equally well for other light sources, such as a 2-phosphor-converted white LED.

Abstract:We developed AM miniLED local dimming (LD) backlight systems on glass for 75‐inch LCD displays, with each consisting of 5184 localing dimming zones. The 75‐inch display achieves a high dynamic contrast ratio of 1,000,000 : 1 and high brightness of more than 1000nits. This backlight system grants the LCD display with HDR performance, which is comparable to those of other products (Dual‐cells and OLEDs), by making the dark state real black. In addition, the system exhibits advantages such as low fabrication cost and long life time.

Abstract:As consumers pursue higher display quality, Mini-LED backlight technology has become the focus of research in the current display field. With its size advantage (100–200 μm), it can achieve one-thousand-level divisional dimming, and it can also be combined with quantum dot technology to greatly improve the contrast, color gamut, dark state and other element of the display performance of LCD displays. Mini-LED backlight technology is undoubtedly the most ideal solution to realize a highly dynamic range display of LCD displays, and has been widely commercialized in many fields such as TVs, tablet computers, notebook computers, and car monitors. This review mainly introduces the efforts made by researchers to eliminate the halo effect, thinning of the backlight module and reducing the backlight power consumption. The application of quantum dot technology in backlight is also presented. We predict that the number of Mini-LED backlight partitions is expected to reach a level of more than 3000 in the future, further utilizing the advantages of the small size in local dimming, but it will also inevitably be challenged by some issues such as power consumption and heat dissipation.

Abstract:A single driver chip based on dynamic scanning is developed for Liquid Crystal Display(LCD).The chip is a high voltage CMOS IC with mixed signals and offers optional output frequencies.The input data frequency of the chip is 13.5 MHz,and the 256 columns' output voltage signals directly drive the LCD.The output signal range of every column is over 12 V,which is divided into 1 024 levels.The max-range rising/falling time of the output signal can be less than 5 μs when load capacitor is 200 pF.The chip has been realized in Chartered 0.35 μm 18 V high voltage process and the layout is designed carefully to minimize the mismatch error.Post layout simulation results illustrate that the design can well accord with the specification.

Abstract:Low power white LED is the best choice for LCD's backlight in portable electronic products.Its driver can be regarded as a special power supply.Design of a high-efficiency PFM boost DC/DC converter is presented,which is capable of sourcing an output current up to 30 mA,with an input range from 0.8 V to 3 V and an output range from 1.9 V to 3.9 V.With external inductor and capacitor,it can start-up at 1.2 V without an external Schottky diode.Circuits of voltage reference and oscillator are analyzed in particular.Designed and simulated using 0.6 μm CMOS process,the device has achieved an efficiency greater than 80% when loading 20 mA and voltage precision better than ±2%,and the time to stabilize output voltage is 1.813 ms.
Design and Optimization of Dot-Pattern for Large Scale LED Backlight Unit

Abstract:Adopting LED as the light source, LCD TV has significant advantages over adopting Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamp (CCFL). Light guide plate (LGP) with a two-dimensional array of dots scheme is the key to the design of the LED backlight unit (BLU). A LED BLU with 1.066 8 m in diagonal and 4 mm in thickness, using incidence structure with four-side light sources is proposed in this paper. Considering the complexity and time-consuming process of the large scale LGP dot-pattern design, the method of simplified model is introduced which is the simplification of the LGP and the LEDs. The optimization result between the simplified model and the actual model can be ignored. The LGP luminance uniformity reaches up to 90% and the extraction efficiency is around 50%. Adopting the same method to a BLU with 1.422 4 m in diagonal and the thickness of 3 mm, it also achieved a good result. The luminance uniformity reaches 85% and the extraction efficiency is around 50%.

Abstract:Introduce a kind of micro controller STM32F030F4 as main control chip ,using LT3598 as the backlight of LCD driver display backlight control system .Through the BPW21 collection of the brightness of the external environment and the brightness of the dis‐play ,collected by signal feedback to the micro controller A/D ;the relationship between effi‐ciency and LED emission temperature ,drive temperature sensor DS18B20 module using the I2C micro controller ,detection of LED working environment temperature ,feedback to the microcontroller .The micro controller according to the brightness difference and temperature obtained using a control algorithm ,calculate the corresponding control variable ,the corre‐sponding output duty cycle PWM ,output current control LT3598 ,so as to form a closed loop control system ,will eventually reach the display brightness and the brightness of the envi‐ronment consistent goal .
