Abstract:We report multicolor upconversion emissions including the blue-violet, green, and red lights in a Tm3+/Er3+ codoped tellurite glass photonic microwire between two silica fiber tapers. A silica fiber is tapered until its evanescent field is exposed and then angled-cleaved at the tapered center to divide the tapered fibers into two parts. A tellurite glass is melted by a gas flame to cluster into a sphere at the tip of one tapered fiber. The other angled-cleaved tapered fiber is blended into the melted tellurite glass. When the tellurite glass is melted, the two silica fiber tapers are simultaneously moving outwards to draw the tellurite glass into a microwire in between. The advantage of angled-cleaving on fiber tapers is to avoid cavity resonances in high index photonic microwire. Thus, the broadband white light can be transmitted between silica fibers and a special optical property like high intensity upconversion emission can be achieved. A cw 1064 nm Nd:YAG laser light is launched into the Tm3+/Er3+ codoped tellurite microwire through a silica fiber taper to generate the multicolor upconversion emissions, including the blue-violet, green, and red lights, simultaneously. Abstract:The preparation and upconversion luminescence properties of the Yb3+ and Tb3+ co-doped glass ceramics containing SrF2 nanocrystals were investigated. The formation of SrF2 nanocrystals was confirmed by X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. Both microstructural and spectral analysis indicated that the Yb3+ and Tb3+ ions were enriched in the precipitated SrF2 nanocrystals, which provide much lower phonon vibration energy than the glass matrix. Due to the efficient cooperative sensitization from Yb3+ to Tb3+ and the relatively low maximum phonon energy of SrF2 nanocrystals, the Yb3+ and Tb3+ co-doped glass ceramics exhibited intense upconversion luminescence, including ultraviolet emission at 382nm.

Abstract:Yb3+/Tb3+/Er3+-doped transparent alkaline earth fluorosilicate glass ceramics containing SrF2 nanocrystals were prepared and their microstructures and spectroscopic properties were investigated. The formation of SrF2 nanocrystals enriched with Yb3+/Tb3+/Er3+ in the glass ceramics was confirmed by XRD, HRTEM and SAED. The glass ceramics exhibited intense upconversion luminescence behaviors, owing to efficient energy transfers from Yb3+ to Er3+ and Tb3+ and low phonon assistant non-radiative transition probabilities of excited Er3+ and Tb3+. The upconversion could be enhanced significantly by increasing the annealing temperature and the luminescence color could be adjusted by varying the Yb3+/Tb3+/Er3+ ratio. Upconversion of Er3+ could be described as sequential energy transfer from single Yb3+ to single Er3+, while upconversion of Tb3+ described as cooperative energy transfer from double Yb3+ to single Tb3+.
Intense Upconversion Luminescence of Er3+/Yb3+ Codoped Oxyfluoride Borosilicate Glass Ceramics Containing Ba2GdF7 Nanocrystals

Abstract:Er3+/Yb3+-codoped transparent oxyfluoride borosilicate glass ceramics containing Ba2GdF7 nanocrystals were prepared and spectroscopic properties of rare earth ions were investigated. Fluoride nanocrystals Ba2GdF7 were successfully precipitated in glass matrix, which was confirmed by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) results. In comparison with the as-made precursor, significant enhancement of upconversion luminescence was observed in the Er3+/Yb3+ codoped oxyfluoride glass ceramics, which may be due to the variation of coordination environment around Er3+ and Yb3+ ions after crystallization. The transition mechanisms of the green and red upconversion luminescence were ascribed to a two-photon process, and that of the blue upconversion luminescence was a three-photon process.

Abstract:Er3+-Yb3+ codoped oxy-fluoro-tungstosilicate glasses with infrared-to-visible frequency upconversion luminescence were prepared by melting quenching in air. The effects of Er3+ doping on the optical properties of the samples were measured by means of techniques such as optical absorption spectra and photoluminescence spectra. The results showed that intense green and red signals centered at 546 and 665 nm, corresponding to the 4S3/2→4I15/2 and 4F9/2→4I15/2 transitions of Er3+ by a multiphoton stepwise phonon-assisted excited-state absorption process, respectively, were simultaneously observed by exciting the samples with a diode laser operating at 980 nm at room temperature. The upconversion process was found very sensitive to Er3+ content at a constant Yb2O3 content of 5 mol.%. With the increase of Er3+ content from 0.5% to 1.5%, the upconversion intensity increased gradually. Further increasing of Er3+ content to 3.0% resulted in a significant fluorescence quenching. Moreover, the possible upconversion mechanisms were discussed based on the energy-matching conditions and the quadratic dependence on excitation power.

Abstract:We report on near infrared to visible upconversion luminescence in Tb3+-doped SrO-TiO2-SiO2 glass excited at 800nm by using femtosecond laser irradiation. The luminescence spectra of the glass are similar for femtoseeond laser irradiation and excitation at 267nm with a Xe lamp. The upconversion lumi-nescence can be assigned to 5D3→7F4 and 5D4→7FJ(J=6, 5, 4, 3) transitions of Tb3+. The relationship between the emission intensity of Tb3+ and the pump power indicates that a three-photon simultaneous ab-sorption process is dominant in the conversion of infrared to the green luminescence. We suggest that the simultaneous absorption of three infrared photons promotes the Tb3+ to excited states, which quickly cas-cade down to lower excited states, and radiatively relax to terminal states, resulting in the characteristic fluorescence of Tb3+. This has promising applications in three dimensional display, visible lasers and high-resolution optical data storage.

Abstract:Intense infrared emission of Yb3+ is reported for the Eu3+/Yb3+ co‐doped fluorosilicate glass ceramics. With annealing methods, cubic SrF2: Eu3+, Yb3+ nanocrystals are precipitated homogeneously in the glass ceramics. The incorporation of Eu3+ and Yb3+ in the SrF2 nanocrystal was confirmed by XRD patterns and emission spectra. Deriving from much closer distance between Eu3+ and Yb3+ ions in the nanocrystals, higher efficient energy transfer of Eu3+→Yb3+ (cross relaxation between Eu3+:5D0→7F6 andYb3+:2F5/2→2F7/2 transition or cooperative energy transfer from one Eu3+ ion to a couple of Yb3+ ions) and intense near infrared emission of Yb3+:2F5/2→2F7/2 transition are achieved in the glass ceramics. Both the quantum yield (QY) and the NIR emission intensity of the glass ceramics are enhanced, when compared with the precursor glasses. The maximum ET efficiency of Eu3+→Yb3+ is close to 60%, and the measured maximum QY of 980 nm emissions is 13%. It demonstrates the potential application of Eu3+/Yb3+ co‐doped glass ceramics in improving the efficiency of silicon solar cells.

Abstract:The up-conversion luminescence and near infrared luminescence of the Er3+ in transparent oxyfluoride glass-ceramics have been investigated. The formation of PbF2 nano-crystals in the glass was confirmed by XRD. From optical absorption spectra, the oscillator strengths for several transitions of the Er3+ in the glass and glass-ceramic have been obtained and then the Judd–Ofelt parameters were calculated by a least squares fitting. The split near infrared emission peaks of the Er3+ ions in the glass-ceramics can be observed because the Er3+ ions have entered into crystalline environment of the β-PbF2 nano-crystals. The up-conversion luminescence intensity of the Er3+ in the glass-ceramics can be observed to be much stronger than that in the glasses. The dependence of the up-conversion luminescence intensity on the current of the LD laser used as excited source indicated that the transition mechanism of the up-conversion luminescence can be ascribed to two-photon absorption process.

Abstract:The Ce3+ and Tb3+ co-doped glasses and glass ceramics containing SrF2 nanocrystals were prepared by melt-quenching and subsequent heat treating and their luminescence properties were described. The formation of SrF2 nanocrystals in glass ceramics was confirmed by X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. The XRD patterns and photoluminescence spectra revealed that the Ce3+ ions and Tb3+ ions have been incorporated into SrF2 nanocrystals. The decay time of excited states has been used to reveal the energy transfer mechanism between Ce3+ and Tb3+. The emission intensity of Tb3+ ions in the glass ceramics was much stronger than that in the precursor glass, which could be ascribed to the more efficient energy transfer from Ce3+ to Tb3+ in the glass ceramics due to the enrichment of Ce3+ and Tb3+ ions and the shortening of the distance between Ce3+ and Tb3+ ions in the precipitated SrF2 nanocrystals. The glasses and glass ceramics could emit bright green light by adjusting concentration ratio of Ce3+ to Tb3+ and heat treatment temperature.
Two-photon Upconversion Luminescence of Eu~(3+):Ca_2Al_2SiO_7 Crystal Irradiated by Infrared femtosecond Laser

Abstract:Infrared to visible upconversion luminescence was demonstrated in trivalent Europium doped Ca_2Al_2SiO_7 crystal (Eu~(3+):Ca_2Al_2SiO_7) irradiated by focused infrared femtosecond laser.The upconversion luminescence originated from ~5D_0 to ~7F_j (j=1,2) transitions of Eu~(3+).The relationship between the upconversion luminescence intensity and the pump power indicated that the upconversion from near-infrared to red is dominated by a two-photon absorption process of Eu~(3+).Analysis suggested that two-photon simultaneous absorption induced population inversion should be the predominant frequency upconversion mechanism.

Abstract:Transparent Eu3+ doped and Tm3+/Yb3+ codoped oxyfluoride glass ceramics were prepared and spectroscopic properties were investigated. The XRD and TEM results demonstrated the formation of Ba2GdF7 nanocrystals, and the reduction of the ratio β between 5D0→7F2 and 5D0→7F1 transitions of Eu3+ ions evidenced rare-earth ions incorporation into Ba2GdF7 nanocrystals. For Tm3+/Yb3+ codoped glass ceramic, unusual ultraviolet upconversion emissions from 6PJ→8S7/2 transition of Gd3+ at 308nm and 1D2→3H6, 1D2→3F4 and 1G4→3H6 transitions of Tm3+ at 359nm, 449nm and 476nm were observed under 980nm excitation, respectively. And upconversion mechanism of Tm3+–Yb3–Gd3++ system was analyzed.

Abstract:The preparation process and upconversion luminescence properties of the Yb3+ and Tm3+ co-doped glass ceramic containing SrF2 nanocrystals were investigated. In the glass ceramic, the SrF2 nanocrystals were embedded uniformly in the glass matrix. The Yb3+ and Tm3+ ions could be enriched into the precipitated SrF2 nanocrystalline phase, which provide much lower phonon energy than the glass matrix. The glass ceramic exhibited much stronger upconversion luminescence from ultraviolet to visible than the precursor glass. The upconversion luminescence mechanisms were mainly attributed to Yb3+–Yb3+ cooperative upconversion, Yb3+–Tm3+ energy transfer and Tm3+–Tm3+ cross relaxation.

Abstract:Eu 2 + -doped high silica glass (HSG) is fabricated by sintering porous glass which is impregnated with europium ions. Eu2+-doped HSG is revealed to yield intense blue emission excited by ultraviolet (UV) light and near-infrared femtosecond laser. The emission profile obtained by UV excitation can be well traced by near-infrared femtosecond laser. The upconversion emission excited by 800 nm femtosecond laser is considered to be related to a two-photon absorption process from the relationship between the integrated intensity and the pump power. A tentative scheme of upconverted blue emission from Eu2+-doped HSG was also proposed. The HSG materials presented herein are expected to find applications in high density optical storage and three-dimensional color displays.

Abstract:We report on near-infrared to visible upeonversion luminescence in transparent Eu3+-doped SrO-TiO2-SiO2 glass-ceramics. X-ray diffraction analysis indicates that Sr2TiSi2O8 crystallites are precipitated in the glass after heat treatment at 850 degrees C for 2 h. The Eu3+-doped glass-ceramics show strongly enhanced upconversion luminescence and greatly improved damage threshold compared with the as-prepared glass. Abstract:In this paper, we report a novel phenomenon in GeS2-In2S3-CsI chalcohalide glasses doped with Tm3+ ions. Under irradiation with an 808 nm laser diode, a bright red emission centered at 700 nm is observed for the first time. By codoping with different concentration of Er3+ ions, emission can be tuned from monochromatic red to green. The Er3+ ions codopant and higher concentration of Tm3+ ions are favoring the 700 nm red emission. Meanwhile, the indium (in) contents plays a significant role on the enhanced upconversion and near-IR emissions. These observations are interesting and may enable the device based on the chalcohalide glass to meet the specific color demands, which have potential applications in the fields of optical and solid state lasers.

Abstract:Novel borosilicate glasses containing Tb3+/Eu3+ co-doped KY3F10 nanocrystals were manufactured via a traditional melt-quenching route and subsequent heat treatment. The nano-crystal structure was determined by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and its morphology directly observed by scanning electron microscope (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Enhanced fluorescence intensity of the prepared samples can be obtained with a higher temperature heat treatment, which is ascribed to the embedding of Tb3+/Eu3+ co-doped KY3F10 nanocrystals in the system glass. The effect of Eu3+ concentration on its luminescence was also carried out, and the energy transfer process between Tb3+ and Eu3+ was ascertained through emission spectra and decay curves. It was found that tunable luminescence from green to red can be obtained by controlling Eu3+ concentration in view of red emission of Eu3+ ion and energy transfer process from Tb3+ to Eu3+. The fluorescence relative intensity ratio (FIR) between 545 nm (Tb3+: 5D4→7F5) and 615 nm (Eu3+: 5D0→7F2) in the sample was also highly dependent on the temperature of the environment from measured temperature-dependent spectra, and high sensitivity of 0.24% K-1 can be achieved for the obtained glass ceramics (GCs). Their excellent properties in both chemistry-physics and sensing behavior render them a promising candidate for multicolor display and temperature sensor.

Abstract:In this paper, we report fine tunable red-green upconversion luminescence of glass ceramic containing 5%Er3(+):NaYF4 nanocrystals excited simultaneously by two near infrared femtosecond lasers. When the glass ceramic was irradiated by 800nm femtosecond laser, weak red emission centered at 670 nm was detected. Bright red light was observed when the fs laser wavelength was tuned to 1490 nm. However, when excited by the two fs lasers simultaneously, the sample emitted bright green light centered at 550 nm, while the red light kept the same intensity. The dependences of the red and the green light intensities on the two pump lasers are much different, which enables us to manipulate the color emission by adjusting the two pump laser intensities, respectively. We present a theoretical model of Er3+ ions interacting with two fs laser fields, and explain well the experimental results. (C) 2014 AIP Publishing LLC.
