Abstract:The demand and consumption of dissolved oxygen in the biological filtration for the removal of high concentration Fe and Mn from the groundwater containing ammonia nitrogen were studied. The results show that weak cascade aeration cannot provide adequate dissolved oxygen for the purification of the groundwater containing ammonia nitrogen. The dissolved oxygen should be maintained above 7.5 mg/L to culture the biofilter layer for manganese removal when ammonia nitrogen, Fe and Mn in the raw groundwater are 1.2 mg/L, 15 mg/L and 1.5 mg/L respectively. The dissolved oxygen is mostly consumed at the upper 45 cm of the filter for Fe removal and ammonia nitrogen nitrification. The residual dissolved oxygen concentration in the lower of the biofilter determines the result of the biological removal of manganese.
