Abstract:AbstractThis review covers the most recent study on the nature of thermotropic liquid crystalline polymers (LCPs) and their progress. We summarize and review the newly developed thin‐film polymerization technique for the investigation of liquid crystalline formation as a function of monomer moieties, and for the study of reaction kinetics, the evolution of liquid crystal texture, and surface energy during polycondensation reactions. We also highlight various modification approaches to yield main‐chain LCPs suitable for conventional processing equipment, without compromising the unique liquid crystalline characteristics and the superior mechanical properties. The thermal stability, degradation behavior, and crystallization kinetics of commercial available main‐chain LCPs are recapitulated. Attention is also given to the rheology, polymer blends, micro‐ and nanostructures, and processing of LCPs and their applications.

Abstract:A series of the main chain liquid crystal polymers with X-shaped mesogens were synthesi-ed by low temperature solution polycondensation. All polymer samples had obvious thermotropic properties. Both flexible spacers and substituents had influence on the liquid-crystalline behaviour of the polymers The polymers were characterized by IR spectrometer, H-NMR spectro-scopy, DSC, polarizing microscopy and X-ray diffractometre.

Abstract:Two nematic liquid crystal (LC) monomers containing double bonds in the side chain were designed and synthesised. Length of the side groups varied from 1 to 2 methylene units. The side-chain polymers were synthesised by hydrosilylation reaction. The molecular structures of the intermediates and the LC monomers were characterised by Fourier transform infrared, elemental analysis and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. The thermal phase behaviour of the monomers and polymers were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry and polar optical microscopy coupled with hot stage. The LC monomers showed only one nematic mesophase in the cooling process. And, the two polymers exhibit an enantiotroppic nematic mesophase either in the heating or in the cooling process.

Abstract:Liquid crystalline polymers (LCPs) have drawn much interest because of their superior properties and widespread applications in high-performance polymer fibers, optics, energy storage, shape memory, surface modification, data storage, actuator, etc. LCPs can self-assemble into various liquid crystalline (LC) phases, such as nematic, smectic, columnar, and cholesteric phases. The self-assembling structures of LCPs can be influenced by architectures and chemical structures of the polymer backbone, mesogenic unit, flexible spacer, surrounding alkyl tail, etc. In the last decades, the structure-property relationships of LCPs have been researched extensively. In this perspective, the history, self-assembly, and applications of main-chain, side-chain, mesogen-jacketed, dendronized, main-chain/side-chain, and crosslinked LCPs are briefly reviewed. Finally, the future direction of research on LCPs is also discussed.

Abstract:The synthesis and characterization of a new series of liquid crystalline polymers, poly(dicycloalkyl vinylterephthalate)s, are reported. The basic building blocks of these polymers are not mesogenic by themselves. However, very stable mesophases can be generated by self-assembly of the polymer molecules. This approach suggests a novel design strategy of liquid crystalline polymers with flexible and apolar building blocks.

Abstract:Liquid-crystal polymers are a type of representative material combining the order-disorder transition of liquid crystals and the superior properties of polymers. The phase transition from the liquid-crystal phase to the isotropic state of mesogens causes large, controllable, and reversible deformation of polymers; thus, liquid-crystal polymers have emerged as one of the most valuable candidates for shape-morphing materials. Therefore, this review will focus on the recent development of shape-morphing liquid-crystal polymers, including the modes of energy conversions, material design strategies and further applications. In the main, novel material design methods and a wide range of application of shape-morphing liquid-crystal polymers are discussed.

Abstract:A class of polystyrene liquid crystalline polymer PS-n (n=2, 6, 8, 10, 12) with unconventional side chain structure was designed and synthesized. The influence of flexible spacer on the supramolecular columnar liquid crystalline phase formation was systematically studied. All polymers exhibit enantiotropic thermotropic liquid crystalline phase behaviour. When the flexible spacer is short (n <= 6), the polymer forms a two-dimensional supramolecular ordered oblique columnar (Colob) phase structure, which results from the periodic fluctuation of the one-dimensional layered structure caused by the ortho substitution of two biphenyl mesogens per side chain. As the spacer length increases (n >= 8), the polymer can exhibit two Col(ob) phases with different lattice parameters at different temperatures. The Col(ob)(I) phase with relatively small lattice parameter appeared near room temperature shows a characteristic undulated lamellar structure with oblique symmetry. With the increase of temperature, the polymer enters a higher ordered Col(ob)(II) phase with larger lattice parameter, showing the specific self-assembly behaviour at high temperature. When further increasing temperature, all polymers exhibit Col(ob) to lamellar phase transition before entering isotropic state. The existence of long spacer length tends to promote the self-organization behaviour of side chain, which makes the appearance of highly ordered mesophase. Due to the parallel orientation of columnar structure, the fingerprint-like morphology can be found on the surface of thermal annealed PS-n thin film, and the macroscopic orientation can occur along the shear direction under shear induction. Abstract:A series of thermotropic, liquid crystalline (LC) polyesters was prepared in which the mesogenic group contained an unusually large, polarizable pendant group in an attempt to increase intermolecular interactions so as to impart a more isotropic character to the mechanical properties of the solid polymer. The series included repeating units containing main chain, polymethylene flexible spacers of increasing lengths. All of the polymers formed stable nematic LC phases and had relatively low melting temperatures, but recrystallization from the melt was very slow in each case.

Abstract:Liquid-crystalline polymers (LCPs) are a unique class of soft materials that combine liquid crystal and polymer characteristics. This perspective highlights recent advances of LCPs on the aspects of molecular engineering, hierarchical structures, and emerging applications. The strategy of sequence control in polymer synthesis has been introduced to tailor the primary structures of LCPs as well as their phases and orders. By incorporating mesogenic motifs rich in shape, order, and interaction into LCPs, novel bulk and interfacial structures on hierarchical scales are anticipated. The intrinsic features and fascinating properties of LCPs enable them to find potential applications in emerging areas including integrated circuits, lasing, environment, and energy, implying compelling opportunities for LCPs in fundamental science and transformative technologies.

Abstract:Liquid crystals (LCs) are such a kind of important materials that influence our life,which are not limited to displays such as televisions and personal computers.Combined with photoresponsive properties,LCs can also enable to develop a great variety of applications in various fields,including flat panel displays,photonics,photo-driven devices,and more recent nanotechnology.LCs demonstrate special characteristics of both mobility of an isotropic liquid and ordered regularity of a crystalline solid,thus termed as intermediate phase.The unique features of LCs provide liquid crystalline materials with interesting properties such as ability to self-assembly,fluidity with long-range order,molecular cooperation motion,birefringence and anisotropy in physical properties (optical,mechanical and electrical),molecular alignment at surfaces induced by external fields,deformation of LC elastomers responding to certain stimuli.Responsive deformation of LC polymers (LCPs) with different alignment of molecules is reviewed.Perspective and further applications in the future of LCPs in the field of micro fluid and micro robot are discussed.

Abstract:Polymer-dispersed liquid crystals (PDLCs) are very attractive due to their electrically switchable properties. However, current PDLC films still have problems such as high driving voltages, low contrast ratio (CR), and poor bending resistance and spacing stability. To solve these problems, a PDLC film with a system of coexisting polymer spacer columns and polymer network was proposed. First, based on the adhesive systems of IBMA and UV6301, the effects of IBMA concentration and LC content on the morphology of the polymer network and the electro-optical properties of PDLC were investigated, respectively. Then, the effects of the process conditions of mask polymerization such as temperature, time, and UV light intensity on the morphology and electro-optical properties of the polymer spacer columns were systematically investigated. It was found that PDLC films with the coexistence system exhibit both excellent electro-optical properties and outstanding bending resistance and spacing stability. Thus, it provides new practical possibilities for the preparation of high-performance PDLC films used in flexible devices.

Abstract:Various kinds of crosslinked liquid-crystal line polymers were synthesized with acrylate monomers and diacrylate cross-linkers containing azobenzene moieties. The effect of spacer length on photoinduced bending behavior of the polymer films was investigated. The films with long spacers exhibited low glass transition temperatures and underwent bending and unbending behavior at room temperature. Mechanical force generated during the process of UV light irradiation was also measured. It was found that the maximum force increased with the increment of the cross-linking density and the intensity of UV light.

Abstract:Two photoresponsive side-on linear liquid crystal polymers (SLLCPs) with different spacer lengths have been synthesised through facile ring-opening metathesis polymerisation (ROMP). For the first time, high molecular weight SLLCPs with polynorbornene backbone and azobenzene side chains are obtained and processed into films by the melt shear-induced orientation method. These SLLCP films exhibit fast and large photo-induced bending behaviour, showing bend degree up to 72 degrees in 3 s upon UV irradiation at ambient temperature. The shape of these films remains unchanged under visible light, demonstrating good shape stability against sunlight. Moreover, owing to their linear structure, the SLLCP films are recyclable through traditional melting or solution methods. Possessing these features, these SLLCP films show application prospects in the fields of light-controllable flexible actuators.

Abstract:A new series of side-chain liquid-crystal polymers, the poly[1-({[(4-cyano-4'-biphenyl)oxy]alkyl}oxy)-2,3-epoxypropane], has been synthesized in which the spacer length is varied from 2 to 8 methylene units. The synthesis used for the chemical modification of polyepichlorohydrin (PECH) involved the phase transfer catalyzed etherification of the chloromethyl groups with sodium 4-cyano-4'-biphenoxide and lithium n-(4-cyano-4'-oxybiphenyl)-alkanoates. All the resulting polymers. (except polymers 7 and 8), including that without spacer, characterized by H-1 NMR, and IR, exhibit thermotropic liquid crystalline mesomophism. The thermal behavior of the polymers has been characterized using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and polarized light microscopy (POM) equipped with hot-stage. A more pronounced odd-even effect in the clearing temperatures is observed on increasing the spacer length in which the odd members display slightly higher values, which were also dependent on the substitution degree of PECH. The flexible PECH chain assists nematic LC formation compared with other more rigid backbone polymers where a smectic phase is often encountered with the same mesogen. A comparison of the thermal properties of the cyanobiphenyl based series reported here. Polyacrylate (PA) and poly(methacrylate)based (PMA) SCLCPs containing 4-cyanobiphenyl as the mesogenic unit are consistent with the general rule that increasing backbone flexibility for a given mesogenic unit and spacer length enhance the clearing temperature. This was not found from the PECH-based series, which show the lower clearing temperature than the PMA and PA series, even though they have more flexible backbone than PA and PMA series. So the clearing temperature is not solely determined by the flexibility of the backbone.

Abstract:Two types of novel reactive linear liquid crystal polymers (LLCPs) with different azotolene concentrations have been synthesized and processed into films and fibers by solution and melting processing methods. Then, the LLCPs in the obtained monodomain fiber and polydomain film were easily cross-linked with difunctional primary amines. The resulted cross-linked liquid crystal polymers (CLCPs) underwent reversible photoinduced bending and unbending behaviors in response to 445 and 530 nm visible light at room temperature, respectively. The post-cross-linking method provides a facile way to prepare the CLCP films and fibers with different shapes from LLCPs, which can be processed by traditional melting and solution methods.

Abstract:Benefiting from their good mechanical processability and high tunability, Si–H and vinyl-functionalized polystyrenes (PSs), i.e., poly(4-vinylphenyl)-dimethyl-silane (PVPDMS/PS-SiH) and poly(4-vinylphenyl)-1-butene (PVSt/PS-Vinyl), produced by living anionic polymerization (LAP) were treated with four vinyl- and Si–H-terminated azobenzene mesogens (Azo-Vinyl, Azo-SiH, AzoB-Vinyl, and AzoB-SiH, referred to as M1, M2, M3, and M4, respectively) via hydrosilylation for the fabrication of PS-based side-chain liquid crystal polymers (SCLCPs) containing different spacers, i.e., PS-SiC/SiOSi-Azo/AzoB. As a strategy for basic molecular control in PS-based SCLCPs, the cooperative influences of the spacers and the degree of polymerization (DP) on the mesomorphic transitions were explored. The phase transitions could be tuned slightly based on the DP but dramatically by adjusting the spacers. For example, the temperature ranges of mesomorphic formation (ΔT) were in the order PS-[SiOSi]-Azo (ΔT = 34–49 °C) < PS-[SiC]-Azo (ΔT = 49–60 °C) < PS-[SiOSi]-AzoB (ΔT = 154–164 °C) < PS-[SiC]-AzoB (ΔT = 162–193 °C). Taking advantage of the quantitative structure-property correlation of PS-based SCLCPs, PS-based liquid crystal networks (LCNs) were further designed for the photomechanical deformation. PS-based LCNs show good mechanical properties with a storage modulus of 120 MPa, controlled phase transitions, and glass transition temperatures (Tg) around room temperature. Crosslinked PS-based LCNs of rigid PS homopolymers with selective crosslinking can exhibit directional bending upon irradiation with UV light at 50 °C after stretching, and this was shown to be a photomechanical deformation, which expands the applicability of these materials.
