Abstract:With the shift towards the "knowledge economy", knowledge sharing is an important process in modern organizations, as successful knowledge sharing can result in shared intellectual capital, an increasing important resource. In this paper, we attempted to explore the relationships among knowledge sharing, affective commitment, perceived task interdependence and job involvement in Chinese accounting firms from the antecedents and outcomes of commitment based empirical data. Firstly, we developed a hypothesized structural model and put forward a series of hypotheses. Secondly, the model was tested using the data from 151 auditors working in Chinese public accounting firms. The results of confirmatory factor analysis indicated the strongly positively relationship between work environment (here, means job involvement and perceived task interdependent), organizational and team affective commitment, and knowledge sharing in Chinese public accounting firms. Contrary to prediction, the relationships between perceived task interdependent and professional affective commitment, professional affective commitment and knowledge sharing were not significant in Chinese public accounting firms; and job involvement has negative relationship with knowledge sharing. From this study, we suggested it may be possible to influence auditors' relative levels of organizational and team affective commitment and knowledge sharing by manipulating work environment

Abstract:In the security market,the quality of accounting information plays an important role in resource distribution and market operation,and it is determined by auditor quality in a large extent.Generally,it is viewed as a beginning point of research on auditor quality that those investigations focus on driving factors on demand and supply aspects of auditor quality.Considering that current research about it is at the initial stage in China,this paper reviews and summarizes synthetically related foreign researches during the late 20 years.On the basis of review,we put forward some advices to the domestic future research.

Abstract:The development of managerial accounting is the interactional result of research,practice and education.This paper first investigated the current state of research methods usde in managerial accounting context, and proposed several feasible recommendations for improvement.Further,we discussed some hot practice issues such as management control systems ,budgeting,cost control and incentive system.This paper summarized several new features of demand for management accountants,and described the current difficulties of accounting education to meet these needs.Our paper was ended with some suggestions on managerial accounting education changes from perspectives of deuaction itself and its environment.This paper aims to provide some fresh new ideas for managerial accounting researchers,and point out a direction for practitioners.

Abstract:This paper reviews the empirical accounting research in China in the last ten years.We first depict a big picture of the literature and then give some critical reviews on each important area.Our focus is on the research problems and the weakness of research designs. Basing on the literature we reviewed,we provide our perspective on the prospect of empirical accounting study in China.The structure of our paper is different with other review papers in that we propose a framework of the empirical accounting study surrounding accounting information,and then review relevant topics according to the framework.

Abstract:Chinese accounting doctor education is facing more and more challenges from the labor market and international competition.This paper explores the accounting doctoral programs in major Chinese universities,and ranks these programs by research productivity.Our aim is to find out the program arrangements that may train the most productive researchers.The results show that the top three programs are from Shanghai University of Finance and Economics,China People's University and Beijing University.Almost all of the high ranked programs have courses of econometrics and micro-economics.It is also argued that the complete adoption of the Anglo-American philosophies and ideology might not be appropriate for China and the program designers should take the special demands of Chinese economy into consideration.
Sustainability Accounting, Management and Policy in China: Recent Developments and Future Avenues

Abstract:Purpose This paper aims to reflect on the special issue that has collected studies by the research community in China pertinent to the country’s recent developments in sustainability accounting, management and policy, as well as to suggest possible future avenues of studies. Design/methodology/approach This paper articulates the current status of researching sustainability accounting, management and policy in China that is instigated by the country’s regulatory initiatives under its political economy. It highlights the papers accepted for the special issue, their areas of focus and the underlying characteristics. Findings It points out that the accepted research papers concentrate on issues related to corporate social responsibility disclosures, sustainability reporting and environmental management in China from the perspectives of the domestic stakeholders. Research limitations/implications Future studies are likely to be increasingly interdisciplinary in nature and requires academia, policymakers and practitioners to make better collaborative efforts in researching about China’s sustainability and the efficacy of their engagement with stakeholders. Practical implications Studies on alignment between China’s further developments and UN’s sustainable development goals (SDGs) are particularly considered desirable as the country continues its globalization initiatives. Education about sustainability accounting for the working professionals and their next generation is much needed for China in support of developing a more sustainable economy aligned with UN's SDGs. Social implications Scholars in China actively developing their research interests in this field reflect critical thinking about the country’s pursuit of sustainable development within a social-political economy that is dissimilar to the West. In the meantime, the country continues to develop into a significant stakeholder of the world’s sustainability implying expectation of transparency in sustainability performance. Originality/value With reference to the review exercise conducted for the special issue, it suggests that there are surging interests in researching accountability for sustainability across the local and international communities to facilitate much needed knowledge exchange. The country and indigenous culture of China, as well as its institutions in relation to sustainability, would require much further exploration in our world under globalization.

In this paper, we review scholarly accounting and finance research pertaining to the Chinese capital market in Mainland China published in Tier 1 and Asia‐Pacific regional journals during the 1999–2018 period. Our review is based along four dimensions: top‐cited articles, main research fields, frequently contributing authors, and emerging research trends. We find that the increasing presence of China in global capital markets, along with its ongoing economic reforms, provides academics with opportunities to investigate distinct institutional environments and utilize natural experiments. This has led to the formulation of novel accounting and finance research questions, greatly advancing our understanding of accounting and finance research.</p>

Abstract:We examine whether accounting academics on the board of directors affect their firm's financial reporting quality. While regulations mandate firms to include financial experts as outside directors to enhance transparency, there is also a shortage of suitable individuals with both the relevant expertise and the appropriate management and communication skills. Although increasing evidence suggests that academics as outside directors improve firm performance, previous studies do not focus on the role of accounting professors per se on accounting quality. The prevalence of hiring academics as outside directors renders China a suitable research setting. We observe greater value relevance of reported earnings when accounting academics serve as financial experts in the board, especially in firms where their influence is expected to be more pronounced. Our evidence implies that accounting scholarship contributes to the efficiency of the capital market, and can potentially supply the boardroom demand for financial experts.

Abstract:Under different culture backgrounds,accounting issues can only be accurately expressed in corresponding contextual research.Nowadays,the practice of simply emphasizing paper publication in Western English Journals is worthy of reflection.In the academic circle of accounting in China,there exists comparatively problematic phenomenon of self-enjoyment,which makes it difficult for theoretical accomplishments to play the due,guiding role in accounting practices in China.For the healthy development of accounting research in China,we need to solve the urgent issue of "telling the truth and expressing clearly".And the Chinese Accounting Society bears unshirkable historical responsibility of solving such an issue.

Financial Reporting and Disclosure Practices in China *

Abstract:We provide survey-based evidence on financial reporting and disclosure practices in China. We use the survey items used in prior studies based on U.S. CFOs (Graham et al., 2005; Dichev et al., 2013) as a benchmark to compare our results. We find some similarities between the U.S. and Chinese firms, but highlight some major differences in the perceptions on financial reporting and disclosure at Chinese firms. For example, Chinese firms do not consider analyst consensus forecasts as important earnings benchmarks, do not believe that voluntary disclosures reduce the cost of capital, and do not exhibit incentives to disclose bad news faster than good news. We provide additional evidence from follow-up questionnaires and on-site interviews that corroborate our main findings and explore the potential explanations. Taken together, our findings suggest that institutional differences at the country-level impose challenges on international studies that rely on theoretically-motivated empirical proxies or research questions from the U.S. setting.

Abstract:We study financial reporting and disclosure practices in China using survey methods similar to prior studies of U.S. firms (i.e., Graham et al., 2005; Dichev et al., 2013). Comparing earnings features, motives to manage and smooth earnings, and voluntary disclosure practices between the two countries, we reveal three major differences. First, Chinese firms exhibit a stronger preference for predictive, relative to verifiable, attributes of earnings that can signal stable firm performance to their stakeholders. Second, smooth earnings are desired by various stakeholders and can be achieved through coordination among connected stakeholders, which is conceptually different from earnings management. Third, Chinese firms consider public disclosure as less relevant in the reduction of the cost of capital. In addition, Chinese firms do not have a bias towards conservative reporting. We explain and reconcile these differences as resulting from some unique institutional features of China. Our study provides novel field evidence that contributes to, expands, and directly corroborates existing empirical studies. 0 2023 The Authors. Published by Elsevier B.V. Abstract:Our original 2007 Journal of International Business Studies article, “The determinants of Chinese Outward Foreign Direct Investment”, was the first theoretically based empirical analysis of the phenomenon. It utilised internalisation theory to explain the internationalisation of Chinese state-owned enterprises. This paper showed that we had failed to ask sufficiently challenging questions about the effects of home country institutions on outward foreign direct investment (OFDI). This Retrospective builds on the extensive subsequent research to show the importance of context in constructing satisfactory theoretical explanations of OFDI. Building on these foundations, we propose research challenges for the next decade on Chinese OFDI that transcend the Chinese context and have wider theoretical applicability. Examining alternative forms of social and economic organisation allows the creation of special theories of foreign direct investment nested within the general theory. Following such a strategy would enable International Business research to make a contribution across the social sciences.

Abstract:Purpose The literature on financial statement analysis attempts to improve fundamental analysis and to identify market inefficiencies with respect to financial statement information. Design/methodology/approach In this paper, the author reviews the extant research on financial statement analysis. Findings The author then provides some preliminary evidence using Chinese data and offer suggestions for future research, with a focus on utilising unique features of the Chinese business environment as motivation. Originality/value The author notes that there has been no work that the author could locate specifically on Chinese FSA research. The unique business environment in China, relative to the US where the vast majority of this work has been conducted, should motivate any studies, especially given the author documents the robust finding in terms of the mean reversion in profitability.

Abstract:Empirical research method applied in the field of accounting study has enlivened the academic atmosphere, and enriched the achievements. However, it has certain congenital defects in topic limits, hypothesis, and procedures etc. It also has acquired some flaws when it is applied in the typical system environment and other conditions in China. For Chinese researchers, it is their rational choice to get a full understanding of the normative research method and empirical research method, and combine them together according to a right mechanism. As field research concurrently has the advantages of both empirical research and normative research, it is actually the best combination of these two methods.

Abstract:In this paper, we review the empirical research on the value of auditing, audit independence, and audit fees published in Accounting Research and Auditing Research, the two premier accounting and auditing journals in China. We identify the main themes in the three areas and assess the consistency of the available empirical evidence on the topics we review. We also highlight the innovativeness of auditing studies published in Chinese language journals to English language readers of the global accounting academic community, before introducing the papers included in this Special Issue on Auditing in China. Finally, we identify gaps in the literature and suggest avenues to help promote further research in this area.
