Abstract:In terms of the disadvantage of traditional methods represented by Fourier analysis applied in analysis of nonlinear signals,a new approach based on fractal theory was provided to analysis random noises in nonlinear signals.Experiment results on real electrocardiograph(ECG) signals demonstrated remarkable gap between the periodical nonlinear time series and random noises;moreover,fractal dimensions varied with different levels of impact from random noise on original time series.These results imply that fractal dimension can effectively describe how the data is affected by random noise and thus usher the prospect in engineering application.

Abstract:This paper makes an attempt to develop a fractal derivative model of anomalous diffusion. We also derive the fundamental solution of the fractal derivative equation for anomalous diffusion, which characterizes a clear power law. This new model is compared with the corresponding fractional derivative model in terms of computational efficiency, diffusion velocity, and heavy tail property. The merits and distinctions of these two models of anomalous diffusion are then summarized.

Abstract:Denoising by soft-thresholding has been a standard algorithm in signal denoising. In fault measurement, it not only requires to reduce the noise, but also to reserve the singularity of signal. By analysing the different characteristics of signal and noise in wavelet analysis,this paper proposes an improved algorithm to enhance the denoising technique of wavelet soft-thresholding in estimating noise intensity, selecting threshold and adjusting wavelet coefficients. Simulations show that the new method solves the conflict commendably between protection of the local signals characteristics and restriction of noise, and can make proper analysis for different fault signals.

Abstract:In this paper, an algorithm is proposed for the identification of fractal signals with wavelet-based models from corrupted data. This algorithm is based on curve fitting and wavelet transformation. It is proved that whenever gamma is greater than 0, the algorithm provides an almost consistent estimation. Moreover, the estimated parameters are asymptotically Gaussian distributed. A mean-square asymptotic convergence rate of the estimated parameters has also been established, Simulation results verify the efficiency of the proposed algorithm.

Abstract:In the paper, an algorithm based on Dual-Tree Complex Wavelet Transform is proposed for 1/ f process denoising. Use the variance of the wavelet coefficients at different scales to estimate the parameters of 1/ f process. Adopting Maximum a Posteriori estimator estimates the wavelet coefficients of 1/ f process. The simulation results show that the method is effective. And comparing with other methods this method doesn’t need to know the statistical characteristic of the added white noise and the parameters of the 1/ f process.

Abstract:After several existing approaches of fractal dimension estimation for image analysis have been introduced, two new approaches are proposed: wavelet energy fractal dimension and morphological fractal dimension. Then we try to obtain variable fractal dimensions of general images such as Lenna instead of typical texture images as done before. Abstract:In this paper, the energy distributions of various noises following normal, log-normal and Pearson-III distributions are first described quantitatively using the wavelet energy entropy (WEE), and the results are compared and discussed. Then, on the basis of these analytic results, a method for use in choosing the decomposition level (DL) in wavelet threshold de-noising (WTD) is put forward. Finally, the performance of the proposed method is verified by analysis of both synthetic and observed series. Analytic results indicate that the proposed method is easy to operate and suitable for various signals. Moreover, contrary to traditional white noise testing which depends on "autocorrelations", the proposed method uses energy distributions to distinguish real signals and noise in noisy series, therefore the chosen DL is reliable, and the WTD results of time series can be improved.

Abstract:Detrended Fluctuation Analysis (DFA) and its generalization for multifractal signals, Multifractal Detrend Fluctuation Analysis (MFDFA), are widely used techniques to investigate the fractal properties of time series by estimating their Hurst exponent ( H ). These methods involve calculating the fluctuation functions, which represent the square root of the mean square deviation from the detrended cumulative curve of a given time series. However, in the multifractal variant of the method, a particular case arises when the multifractal index vanishes. Consequently, it becomes necessary to define the fluctuation function differently for this specific case. In this paper, we propose an approach that eliminates the need for a piecewise definition of the fluctuation function, thereby enabling a unified formulation and interpretation in both DFA and MFDFA methodologies. Our formulation provides a more compact algorithm applicable to mono and multifractal time series. To achieve this, we express the fluctuation functions as generalized means, using the generalized logarithm and exponential functions from the context of the non-extensive statistical mechanics. We identified that the generalized formulation is the Box–Cox transformation of the dataset; hence we established a relationship between statistics parametrization and multifractality. Furthermore, this equivalence is related to the entropic index of the generalized functions and the multifractal index of the MFDFA method. To validate our formulation, we assess the efficacy of our method in estimating the (generalized) Hurst exponents H using commonly used signals such as the fractional Ornstein–Uhlenbeck (fOU) process, the symmetric Lévy distribution, pink, white, and Brownian noises. In addition, we apply our proposed method to a real-world dataset, further demonstrating its effectiveness in estimating the exponents H and uncovering the fractal nature of the data.

Research on Similarity of Stochastic Non-Stationary Time Series Based on Wavelet-Fractal

Abstract:Traditional dimension reduction methods about similarity query introduce the smoothness to data series in some degree, but lead to the disappearance of the important features of time series about non-linearity and fractal.The matching method based on wavelet transformation measures the similarity by using the distance standard at some resolution level. But in the case of an unknown fractal dimension of non-stationary time series, the local error of similarity matching of series increases. The process of querying the similarity of curve figures will be affected to a certain degree. Stochastic non-stationary time series show the non-linear and fractal characters in the process of time-space kinetics evolution. The concept of series fractal time-varying dimension is presented. The original Fractal Brownian Motion model is reconstructed to be a stochastic process with local self-similarity. The Daubechies wavelet is used to deal with the local self-similarity process. An evaluation formula of the time-varying Hurst index is established. The algorithm of time-varying index is presented, and a new determinant standard of series similarity is also introduced. Similarity of the basic curve figures is queried and measured at some resolution ratio level,in the meantime, the fractal dimension in local similarity is matched. The effectiveness of the method is validated by means of the simulation example in the end.
A Method of Denoising Remote Sensing Signal from Natural Background Based on Wavelet and Shannon Entropy

Abstract:Remote sensing signal reflected from natural background is of important significance in the field of geography. However the signal we can get is always polluted by additive noise. Since it has been proved that the remote sensing signal reflected from natural background always has some fractal characteristics, just like the background it came from, it is possible for us to deal with it with the theory of fractal. For the perfect analytical function on both time and scale, the wavelet theory is used to analyze the remote sensing signals in this paper.Shannon entropy represents how much information in an information source, so it is possible to estimate the remote sensing signal from noise based on the radio of information entropy at different scales. In this paper, the Shannon entropy of remote sensing signals' wavelet coefficients and that of additive noise in different scales are discussed respectively. And then a method for estimating the Shannon entropy of signal's wavelet coefficients is discussed. Finally, the wavelet coefficients belonging to signal are estimated, and the signal is estimated from the added noise at last. In order to demonstrate the effectiveness of this method, some simulation studies are performed in this paper. Since it doesn't need to estimate the fractal parameter of remote sensing signal, this method is suitable in many situations.

Abstract:Fractal dimension (D) is widely utilized in various fields to quantify the complexity of signals and other features. However, the fractal nature is limited to a certain scope of concerned scales, i.e., scaling region, even for a theoretically fractal profile generated through the Weierstrass-Mandelbrot (W-M) function. In this study, the scaling characteristics curves of profiles were calculated by using the roughness scaling extraction (RSE) algorithm, and an interception method was proposed to locate the two ends of the scaling region, which were named corner and drop phenomena, respectively. The results indicated that two factors, sampling length and flattening order, in the RSE algorithm could influence the scaling region length significantly. Based on the scaling region interception method and the above findings, the RSE algorithm was optimized to improve the accuracy of the D calculation, and the influence of sampling length was discussed by comparing the lower critical condition of the W-M function. To improve the ideality of fractal curves generated through the W-M function, the strategy of reducing the fundamental frequency was proposed to enlarge the scaling region. Moreover, the strategy of opposite operation was also proposed to improve the consistency of generated curves with actual signals, which could be conducive to practical simulations.
Estimating fractal dimensions: a comparative review and open source implementations

Abstract:The fractal dimension is a central quantity in nonlinear dynamics and can be estimated via several different numerical techniques. In this review paper we present a self-contained and comprehensive introduction to the fractal dimension. We collect and present various numerical estimators and focus on the three most promising ones: generalized entropy, correlation sum, and extreme value theory. We then perform an extensive quantitative evaluation of these estimators, comparing their performance and precision using different datasets and comparing the impact of features like length, noise, embedding dimension, falsify-ability, among many others. Our analysis shows that for synthetic noiseless data the correlation sum is the best estimator with extreme value theory following closely. For real experimental data we found the correlation sum to be more strongly affected by noise versus the entropy and extreme value theory. The recent extreme value theory estimator seems powerful as it has some of the advantages of both alternative methods. However, using four different ways for checking for significance, we found that the method yielded ``significant' low-dimensional results for inappropriate data like stock market timeseries. This fact, combined with some ambiguities we found in the literature of the method applications, have implications for both previous and future real world applications using the extreme value theory approach, as, for example, the argument for small effective dimensionality in the data cannot come from the method itself. All algorithms discussed are implemented as performant and easy to use open source code via the DynamicalSystems.jl library.

Abstract:In this contribution, we study the notion of affine invariance (specifically, invariance to the shifting, scaling, and rotation of the coordinate system) as a starting point for the development of mathematical tools and approaches useful in the characterization and analysis of multivariate fractional Brownian motion (fBm) fields. In particular, using a rigorous and powerful distribution theoretic formulation, we extend previous results of Blu and Unser (2006) to the multivariate case, showing that polyharmonic splines and fBm processes can be seen as the (deterministic vs stochastic) solutions to an identical fractional partial differential equation that involves a fractional Laplacian operator. We then show that wavelets derived from polyharmonic splines have a behavior similar to the fractional Laplacian, which also turns out to be the whitening operator for fBm fields. This fact allows us to study the probabilistic properties of the wavelet transform coefficients of fBm-like processes, leading for instance to ways of estimating the Hurst exponent of a multiparameter process from its wavelet transform coefficients. We provide theoretical and experimental verification of these results. To complement the toolbox available for multiresolution processing of stochastic fractals, we also introduce an extended family of multidimensional multiresolution spaces for a large class of (separable and nonseparable) lattices of arbitrary dimensionality.
Detecting fetal heart sounds by means of Fractal Dimension analysis in the Wavelet domain

Abstract:Phonocardiography is a low-cost technique for the detection of fetal heart sounds (FHS) that can extend clinical auscultation in mobile and home care setups. The work presented here examines the transferability of a Wavelet Transform (WT)-based method that combines also Fractal Dimension (FD) analysis, previously proposed as WT-FD for the cases of lung and bowel sound analysis [4], to the extraction of FHSs. The WT-FD method has been evaluated with 12 simulated FHS signals and has shown promising results in terms of accuracy and performance (89%) in identifying the location of heartbeat, even in cases of signals with additive noise up to (6dB). This robustness paves the way for WT-FD testing in real FHSs, recorded under clinical setting, clearly contributing to better evaluation of the fetal heart functionality.
A maximum-likelihood-based approach to estimate the long memory parameter using fractional spline wavelets

Abstract:Fractional spline wavelets act as fractional differentiators for essentially low-pass signals, which is a useful property to analyze time series with fractal behavior. Moreover, under suitable scaling of wavelet coefficients, one can whiten a fractional Gaussian noise inputted in the wavelet channels. In this article, we demonstrate the two former statements and, by employing them, propose a method based on maximum likelihood to estimate the long-memory parameter using fractional spline wavelets. The proposed estimator exhibits competitive behavior in terms of mean squared error in the simulation studies we conducted, dominating all other methods as the sample size increases. In empirical applications, the proposed method outperformed other approaches in 10 of 12 evaluations for three different time series. Moreover, the proposed method allows for estimation in a continuous search grid, even when the Hurst coefficient lies outside of stationarity boundaries, which is a clear advantage over many algorithms: in such cases, the proposed method displays a stable behavior and an increasing outperformance margin. We also propose an identification procedure for the persistence or antipersistence of a given signal, based on the energy concentration of the coefficients of wavelet decomposition and its theoretical properties.
